Ever look back at something you obsessed over… and now you can't even remember why? This episode's about that gap. The gap between what you care about today and what future-you will actually give a damn about. We'll talk about puppies that can't tell a cushion from a laptop, people who think their city is the center of the world, and why your 16-year-old self thought video games were the meaning of life. Turns out, value isn't fixed. It drifts. Sometimes overnight. Sometimes over decades. The trick is spotting which things are worth fighting for and which will fade like old Instagram filters. What if you could understand what's going on in your puppy's brain - week by week?   In this episode, I'm breaking down puppy milestones so you know exactly what to expect at every stage of your pup's first year. We'll walk through puppy milestones by week, explore what's happening developmentally inside that little fuzzy head, and talk about how you can best support them during their most sensitive stages - including the puppy critical socialization period.   I'll help you understand puppy development like never before - because when you know better, you do better. And knowing these stages? It's a total game-changer for your relationship.   Here's what we cover in this episode: What really happens during the puppy critical socialization period - and why missing it can have long-term effects. The truth about those early weeks: what puppy milestones matter most in shaping a confident, resilient adult dog. Why asking your breeder about puppy development practices isn't overkill - it's essential. When is the best time to start training and socializing your puppy? (Hint: it's earlier than you think!) What surprises you can expect during adolescent stages, and how knowing puppy milestones by week helps you stay sane through it all. Whether you're in the newborn snuggle stage or the teenage chaos phase, this episode will give you the tools - and the mindset - to navigate puppy development with more clarity, compassion, and confidence.   What's one piece of advice about puppy development that you've ditched or reconsidered? Hi. Spaff here. Some kids want to grow up to be President or cure cancer. My goal was to get a song on the Dr. Demento Show. I listened to it faithfully every Sunday night, often with headphones so my mom wouldn't overhear songs like "Making Love in a Subaru." In the early 2000s I somehow convinced Robert Lund, a Salt Lake radio personality, to record some of my song parody ideas, all of which I immediately sent to Dr. Demento. On November 28, 2004, he played "I Want Some Plastic Surgery for Christmas." I was giddy. Robert and I have since collaborated on over a hundred songs, and Dr. Demento has played a number of them. I remain giddy. So here's another. It's a tribute to Dr. Demento via a list of songs from the days he hooked me. (Needless to say, he has played countless more effing awesome comedy songs in the intervening years, some of which were created by the people reading this.) It's a parody of "Ripple," a song the Grateful Dead wrote and recorded in 1970, the year Barret Hansen became Dr. Demento. Pass the claret to me, Barret! May you forever stay demented. ~~~ CREDITS: Turns out Robert owns mandolins (plural) and has played them his whole life. Also he sang and played guitar and produced this recording. "Ripple" has lyrics by Robert Hunter and music by someone named Jerry Garcia. Dr. Demento brought all of these comedy songs to our attention, and the legendary titles listed here are the brain children of their various legendary parents. BUT I DID EVERYTHING ELSE.

Cat bravely tackles the "soup of acronyms" in qualifications and the vital need for quality control in education.Building Bridges Between Professions: How vets and paraprofessionals (like trainers and behaviourists) can better collaborate, refer, and build trust – essential for optimizing animal welfare.Navigating Online Misinformation: Cat offers invaluable advice on fact-checking what you see on social media, identifying confidence vs. correctness, and the danger of "kernel of truth" myths. The Rise of Tech in Vet Med: An exciting look at new, non-invasive diagnostic tools (like the HTVista and AI for reading X-rays) and how technology is shaping the future of veterinary care. The Mark of a Good ProfessionalIf you're invested in animal welfare, ethical practice, and cutting through the noise in the pet world.

Today, we're digging deep into puppy behavior , and how understanding your dog's nature can change everything about how you train and connect with them.   The truth is, puppy behavior is shaped by more than just training - there are powerful influences like genetics, temperament, and early life experiences at play. That's where getting dog behavior explained through the lens of both nature and nurture makes all the difference.   In this episode, I break down what's really going on beneath the surface and how you can adjust your training mindset to build a more connected, successful relationship with your dog. Because when we get dog behavior explained with clarity and compassion, everything changes for the better.   Here's what you'll learn in this episode: The truth behind the blank slate myth - and why asking “Why does my puppy do that?” might have a more complex answer than you think The role genetics, temperament, and even prenatal stress play in shaping puppy behavior before they even come home Why one-size-fits-all training advice often fails—and how understanding your pup's background helps you tailor your approach Real-life examples of dog behavior explained, from herding breeds to retrievers and everything in between What is actually under your control—and how you can support your puppy's growth in a way that feels good for both of you Whether you're raising your first puppy or still asking "Why does my puppy act so differently than others I've known," this episode will give you the insight you need to train with more empathy and effectiveness.   So if you're ready to have dog behavior explained in a way that actually makes sense - and feels encouraging rather than overwhelming - tune in now!   Resources mentioned in this episode: HELP!
