Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Susanna Clarke: “Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell.” Susanna Clarke in 2006 Susanna Clarke, author of the classic fantasy novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, interviewed September 12, 2005 in the KPFA studios. Back in the fall of 2004, a new fantasy novel, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by a newcomer, Susannah Clarke, became an instant classic, finding its way to best-seller lists in the U.K. and United.States, and winning the Hugo Award for 2004's best novel at the 2005  World Science Fiction Convention. This interview with Susannah Clarke was recorded while on tour for the paperback edition of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, and has not aired in two decades. Both Christopher Hampton and Julian Fellowes took stabs at writing a film adaptation of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, but both were unable to translate the very long novel into a screenplay, and then New Line cancelled the project. It was eventually developed into a seven -part miniseries for the BBC, and aired in both the United States and Britain in 2015. It is now streaming on Amazon Prime. After the publication of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, and the awards, Susannah Clarke continued to work on the sequel, set in the same universe a few years later, but became bogged down, almost sentence by sentence, as chronic fatigue syndrome took its toll. By 2015, after visiting the set of the BBC production, she decided to go another route, and went back to another manuscript that likely pre-dated her best-seller. That novel, Piranesi, was published to mostly favorable reviews in 2020. She is now working on a third novel. Complete Interview.   Dawn Porter Dawn Porter, documentary filmmaker, in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky, recorded September 11, 2023. Legendary singer-songwriter Luther Vandross pioneered a golden age of silky-smooth R&B and passionate slow jams. In addition to countless hits and platinum albums, he earned eight Grammy Awards, including ‘Song of the Year' in 2004 for “Dance With My Father” – a track that was released while he was hospitalized after suffering from a stroke. He studied from the best at a young age, spending hours watching and recreating the routines of Diana Ross and Dionne Warwick that he saw on television. He wrote, arranged and sang back up for David Bowie, Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Barbra Streisand and Roberta Flack, before finally deciding to step into the spotlight as a solo artist.Despite his success, the powerhouse balladeer had a very public struggle with weight, especially with an unforgiving media fixated on image. He was also dogged by constant questions over his sexuality, despite pleas to respect his privacy. It's hard to believe that a man responsible for some of the most beautiful ballads ever recorded had a difficult time finding true love in his own life. Nonetheless, Vandross persevered with an unprecedented work ethic and an unrelenting spirit to succeed.Join I SEE U as host Eddie Robinson chats unguarded with award-winning filmmaker, Dawn Porter. Her latest documentary, Luther: Never Too Much, has received critical acclaim for uncovering details of Luther Vandross' life previously unknown to even the most die-hard fan. Utilizing a hefty trove of archival footage and rare rehearsal recordings, Porter allows Vandross to tell his own story with assistance from his closet friends and collaborators, including Warwick, Mariah Carey, Marcus Miller, Richard Marx and Nile Rodgers. With the recent news of CNN Films and OWN acquiring the film, the director chronicles for I SEE U the triumphs and tribulations of an extraordinary vocalist who grew up admiring the heroines of ‘60s music royalty to become one of the most influential and decorated artists of the last few decades.

Lady Bird Johnson is best known today as the wife of Lyndon Baines Johnson, 36th President of the USA between 1963-69. However, there was much more to her life than simply the role of ‘First Lady'. In this episode of Factual America, Matthew Sherwood takes a deep dive into Lady Bird Johnson's life with Dawn Porter, director of new documentary film, The Lady Bird Diaries.  It's 1963. Liz Carpenter, Lady Bird's Press Secretary, suggests that she records her ‘thoughts and experiences' on a tape recorder. Lady Bird agrees and borrows one from Carpenter's son. She never looks back. Over the next six years she will record 123 hours-worth of material about her day-to-day life. As Dawn tells Matthew, Lady Bird's entries are ‘detailed and meticulous': she had a degree in journalism and was a very good note taker. She was also, Dawn says, very disciplined, observant, and conscious of her place in history. This consciousness made Lady Bird an invaluable counsellor for her husband. So much so that in an age where there was no line of presidential succession, Lady Bird was even referred to as ‘Mrs Vice President'. The Lady Bird Diaries describe Lady Bird as ‘one of the most influential and least understood First Ladies in [American] history'. Matthew and Dawn discuss the detail of why that is so. They also explore her abilities as a strategist, how Lady Bird changed the way the White House works, and her political and public independence even from her husband. The picture they draw is of a woman who was more than equal to the challenge of the difficult age in which she lived, and which she so carefully recorded. For a fuller picture of Lady Bird, the Johnson White House and 60s America, this episode is a must listen. Watch the episode at https://factualamerica.com “She both did and didn't accept the limit on her authority that society was giving her. She didn't demand credit for her contributions but didn't stop making them... her priority was getting things done.” – Dawn Porter

DEADLOCKED: HOW AMERICA SHAPED THE SUPREME COURT ABOUT THE SERIES From Emmy® Award-winning filmmaker Dawn Porter, DEADLOCKED: HOW AMERICA SHAPED THE SUPREME COURT is a four-part documentary series that traces the modern history of the Supreme Court and the people, decisions and confirmation battles that have shaped the Court into what it is today. With the Justices under the microscope like never before, DEADLOCKED premieres on SHOWTIME at a profoundly consequential time: Americans are grappling with a Supreme Court drastically remade by former President Donald Trump; the historic confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson; the unprecedented leak from inside the Court's chambers; and the aftershock of the landmark Dobbs decision's effective reversal of Roe v. Wade. To understand this critical moment, the series travels back to the 1950s when Chief Justice Earl Warren heralded an era of progressive legal decisions spurred by the nation's changing values, paving the zigzagging path the country is still walking today. DEADLOCKED reveals how the Supreme Court's ideological balance has shifted over the years to reflect the hopes - and fears - of American citizens, exploring the interconnectedness between the Court's and the nation's future. HER NEXT PROJECT Award-winning, acclaimed filmmaker Dawn Porter. Over the years Dawn has emerged in the entertainment industry as a leader in the art of storytelling; directing and producing critically acclaimed projects that have impacted generations of people from all walks of life. Dawn's recent feature film with ABC News Studio, "The Lady Bird Diaries," is a groundbreaking all-archival documentary film about the former First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson, who is one of the most influential and least understood First Ladies. The feature film looks at the 123 hours of personal and revealing audio diaries that Lady Bird recorded during her husband's administration. These audio diaries showcase how Lady Bird was an astute observer of character and culture, as well as a savvy political strategist. Dawn highlights Lady Bird's crucial role in Lyndon B. Johnson's presidency and brings viewers behind the scenes of one of the most tumultuous and consequential periods in modern American history. "The Lady Bird Diaries" was met with critical review at the 2023 South By Southwest Festival and went on to receive The Louis Black 'Lone Star' Award. The film is produced by Trilogy Films for ABC News Studios with Dawn serving as the director and producer. "The Lady Bird Diaries" will exclusively premiere on Hulu on November 13, 2023.

Dawn Porter's DEADLOCKED: How America Shaped the Supreme Court is a four-part SHOWTIME documentary series traces the modern history of the Supreme Court, the people, decisions and confirmation battles that have shaped America. From our right to privacy, to access to the ballot, and all rights protected by the Constitution, the nine unelected justices of the Supreme Court have the final word on issues that shape our democracy and daily lives. The series unfolds during a profoundly consequential year, unlike any in recent memory—the historic confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson, the fallout of an unprecedented leak from inside the Court's chambers, and a Supreme Court, remade by Donald Trump, on the brink of overturning Roe v. Wade. To understand this critical moment and how we got here, we go back to the 1950s, when the Court led by Chief Justice Earl Warren heralded an era of progressive legal decisions that set us upon the zigzagging path we are still walking today, as the Court's role in American society has become increasingly prominent and bitterly contested. Supreme reveals how much of the country's story is wrapped up in the Supreme Court's deliberations, and considers what this means for America's future. Director and producer Dawn Porter (Gideon's Army, Spies of Mississippi, The Lady Bird Diaries, Rise Again: Tulsa and the Red Summer) joins us for a conversation on fifty years of a methodical, calculated and concerted effort on the part of the most radical elements of the “conservative” judicial movement have wrought on the integrity and public confidence of the branch of governance that is the “last word” on what is legal and what is illegal in America. Dawn Porter was reluctant to call herself a Director, even after her movie premiered at Sundance and got picked up by HBO. Today her award-winning documentaries (John Lewis: Good Trouble, The Way I See It) are an invaluable addition to the historical record, but her humility keeps her from calling herself an activist. In this episode, we're using Dawn's expertise – she was once a practicing attorney – to renegotiate the contracts that keep women from assuming titles we don't think we're qualified for, even when we have more than enough on our resumes. Dawn takes us through her incredible journey from comfortable DC lawyer to celebrated documentarian, covering topics such as: The importance of advocating for yourself with as much passion as you advocate for others How to free yourself from the traps of structure and comfort to take on your next, great adventure How to use mistakes as stepping stones to your next success Learning how to get comfortable with discomfort Stepping into your power and your title as a woman in charge Acknowledging the danger of “if it ain't broke, don't fix it,” because sometimes breaking things is the first step to your next great adventure. Over the last several years, the COVID-19 global pandemic has helped illustrate to the nation that we are only as healthy as those who are most vulnerable among us. Disparities impacting a person's health ultimately also impact the health of our larger society. Many of these disparities have deeply rooted causes that stem from unjust policies and programs across the country. This session in our Humankindness and Health Justice series will focus on social justice as a form of health justice, addressing these deeply rooted issues and beliefs that created downstream impacts on the health of our communities.  Join us for a conversation on ways to start identifying and ending challenges that foster disparities in our communities.
