Text Me Your QuestionsIn this episode of Dog Training Today, certified canine behaviorist Will Bangura, M.S., CAB-ICB, CBCC-KA, CPDT-KA, FFCP, tackles one of the most common—and consequential—mistakes pet parents make when attempting behavior modification: working with their dog above threshold. Whether you're addressing fear-based reactivity, anxiety around people or dogs, or noise sensitivities like fireworks and thunderstorms, the success of counter conditioning and desensitization hinges on one critical factor—your dog must be emotionally below threshold. Will breaks down exactly what "threshold" means in practical, observable terms, and why too many pet parents unknowingly push their dogs into mild, moderate, or even severe stress while trying to change emotional responses. This episode serves as a reality check and a science-based guide to getting it right. You'll learn:Why starting too close to a visual or auditory trigger can completely derail counter conditioning effortsThe difference between being "physically calm" and "emotionally below threshold"How to recognize subtle, hard-to-read canine body language signals that indicate discomfort or stress—well before overt reactivity surfacesHow to establish safe training distances that allow for true learning and emotional reappraisal to occurWhy early intervention and incremental exposure are essential, especially with noise-based phobias like fireworksPractical 4th of July safety tips for keeping your dog secure, calm, and protected before, during, and after fireworks beginWhen to consult with your veterinarian about the use of anti-anxiety medications or natural calming aids to support behavioral progressWill also explores the neurobiology of fear and stress responses in dogs, offering a clear explanation of how amygdala-driven reactivity undermines learning when a dog is flooded, and why the emotional safety zone is where meaningful behavior change takes place.Whether you're a pet parent working through fear-based issues or a professional looking to sharpen your desensitization protocols, this episode offers grounded, science-backed advice you can put into practice immediately. How do you respond when shown undeniable evidence of abuse involving your own child? Apparently, if you're Madeline Soto, you prioritize your partner—Stephan Sterns—over your daughter's safety. Even after being shown explicit images of assault involving her daughter, Soto's first thought was to protect Sterns, telling his father to get him a lawyer. In this chilling conversation with police, the emotional disconnect and disturbing rationalizations take center stage. Robin Dreeke, retired FBI Special Agent, breaks down the dark psychology behind Soto's behavior, exploring how trauma bonding and disassociation might have played a role in her twisted loyalties. But here's the real question: Should she be held accountable for her actions, or is she just another victim of her own brokenness? #MadelineSoto #StephanSterns #ChildAbuse #TraumaBonding #TrueCrime #ParentalNeglect #Podcast Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? From Our Neurons to Yours
How VR could help treat depression with "radical behaviorist" Dr. Kim Bullock

Today, we're going to talk about virtual reality and how it could be used to treat depression. We're talking with psychiatrist Kim Bullock, the founding director of Stanford's Neurobehavioral Clinic and Virtual Reality & Immersive Technologies (VRIT) program. Dr. Bullock — a physician certified in Neuropsychiatry, Psychiatry, and Lifestyle Medicine — calls herself a "radical behaviorist." Like other practitioners of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), she sees the troublesome thoughts and emotional states of many psychiatric disorders as just another form of behavior, which can be reshaped through self awareness and practice — much like you might work at avoiding junk food or not biting your nails.Of course, one of the biggest challenges is the practice part. It's no easy task for patients to practice experiencing the world in a more positive, healthy way. This is why Bullock is eager for practitioners of CBT and related forms of psychotherapy to embrace virtual reality technologies — which enable psychiatrists to prescribe precisely calibrated "experiences" to treat cognitive & behavioral disorders. We started by discussing early results from a clinical trial for a virtual reality-enhanced intervention major depressive disorder, which Dr. Bullock recently launched with support from the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute Neuroscience:Translate program. Join us to learn more about how VR is transforming the world of psychotherapy!Learn MoreImagining virtual reality as a simple tool to treat depression  (Stanford Medicine, 2024)Extended Reality(XR) enhanced behavioral activation for treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (2022 Neuroscience:Translate grant)Clinical Trial: Virtual Reality Behavioral Activation: An Intervention for Major Depressive DisorderThe Stanford Virtual Reality and Immersive Technologies (VR-IT) ProgramRecent VR-IT publicationsEpisode CreditsThis episode was produced by Michael Osborne, with production assistance by Morgan Honaker, and hosted by Nicholas Weiler. “I feel like so much of why cat's get a bad rap is because they seem to be juxtaposed to dogs and dog behavior.” Today we wanted to share an episode of Kindred, a podcast hosted by sisters Kate Coffin and Jenn Asplundh. It explores the intricate and interdependent relationship that humans have with animals and nature. Their episodes are always intriguing and we thought you'd enjoy their show as much as we do. In this  episode, Kate and Jenn speak with Dr. Kristyn Vitale, whose work focuses on companion animal behavior, specifically cat social cognition, cat behavior, and human-cat interaction. Kristyn walks them through why cats can be misunderstood and how we can understand them better, and busting myths that have persisted for far too long. Turns out Spot and Fido aren't the only ones who can be taught how to sit, stay, and roll over! We hope you enjoy their show and if you'd like to learn more, you can visit kindredpodcast.co and if you'd like to binge all their episodes you can find Kindred on Apple Podcasts and most other podcast platforms.
