Join Sue for an upcoming Live Virtual Workshop where you will learn from Sue practical tips & strategies to make a difference. In this episode, we will discuss: ✅ Autistic identity is accepting yourself as you truly are. ✅ Behaviour often signals anxiety or distress, not intentional aggression. ✅ Negative narratives around autism significantly harm self-esteem. ✅ Behaviourist models wrongly focus on modifying autistic individuals. ✅ Effective support adapts environments rather than forcing individual changes. ✅ Autistic people experience burnout from societal pressure to mask. ✅ Language matters: Autism is an identity, not a removable label. Carol Sanford (https://carolsanford.com/) is one of the most important thinkers of the last few decades. Like no-one else, her work calls out the deeply damaging effects of Behaviourism on all aspects of our lives, especially learning and education, and advocates for a living systems approach to business, education and community. Carol's latest book, ‘No More Gold Stars: Regenerating Capacity to Think for Ourselves' is in some ways a synthesis of many of her most powerful ideas that she has developed through a lifetime of practice and learning from various indigenous and wisdom traditions. But it also calls out the damaging Behaviourist ideas that have ‘become ubiquitous in all our lives and institutions' and undermined our trust in our abilities to know ourselves and think for ourselves - in all of our various and richly diverse ways. As Tyson Yunkaporta calls it in his amazing foreword to the book, “the sharp and pointy gift that keeps on giving”. As someone living with ALS, Carol's voice can be a little hard to understand at times, so if you would like it you will find a transcript link here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wkr31QCA2MO5y9AynAq0L7Qb1bStlk0muFralyIfBeM/edit?usp=sharing (as well as the automatic transcription on Spotify and some other podcast platforms). As Carol says in Part One: “I use the 7 First Principles of Living Systems to be rigorous in examination, precise in focus and in order to rise up and venerate life. Otherwise, we fool ourself for the sake of our ego.” (https://carolsanford.medium.com/the-regenerative-education-system-and-practice-part-1-23ffcc86326e) Part Two: Principle 1 - Engage with wholes Principle 2 - Evoke essence Part Three: Principle 3 - Realise individual potential Principle 4 - Development of mind and beings Principle 5 - Work within nestedness Part Four: Principle 6 - Laser focus to nodal Principle 7 - Regenerate energy fields (Due to Medium paywall, I am also sharing all of the articles, Parts 1-4, here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/12HWRFUbzmWpv4_k7JxLFgn7F99r8UG4o/view?usp=drive_link) Carol refers to Alice Waters, chef and restauranteur who started the Edible Schoolyard movement at Berkeley. https://search.worldcat.org/title/Edible-Schoolyard-:-a-universal-idea/oclc/1280875278 About Carol: For four decades, Carol has worked with great leaders of successful businesses such as Google, DuPont, Intel, P&G, and Seventh Generation, educating them to develop their people and ensure a continuous stream of innovation that continually deliver extraordinary results. Carol is a founder and designer of The Regenerative Business Development Community with lifetime members of almost 500 members, meeting in locations around the world and now online with leaders from multiple companies learning together in bi-quarterly events as well as an Annual Regenerative Business Summit, Carol is also a founder and designer of The Regenerative Change Agent Development community, with members from three regions- Americas, EMEA, Deep Pacific with over 30 events a year in person and online with regenerative change agents learning about and creating change together. To continue our August Archive Season, Anna is joined by Trainer & Behaviourist, Victoria Stilwell, all the way from Atlanta. At the time of re recording, Victoria's second series of It's Me Or The Dog was being aired, and we chat about this and the landmark first series that aired in the UK in 2005. Victoria explains that the doggy problems are the same as they were in the first series, but more intense as our lives have changed, not least because of the pandemic. If trained dogs are happy dogs, they make for happier pet parents! Victoria champions the term ‘teaching' over ‘training, and about empowering pet parents with the skills to get the best out of your dog. And why in #NationalWalkYourDog month, getting out with your dog is the best way to be with your furry friend.Watch It's Me or the DogInstagram: @victoriastilwell and on FacebookOr visit her website positively.comFor more about Anna go to annawebb.co.ukMusic and production by Mike Hanson for Pod People ProductionsCover art by JaijoCover photo by Rhian Ap Gruffydd at Gruff Pawtraits

In this episode, Jo & Vicky are joined by Sarah Whitehead, an internationally renowned canine behaviour and trainer, speaker, and author. She started working in the industry 35 years ago when only Barbara Woodhouse talked about dog training. At that time, hardly anyone had heard of positive reinforcement clicker training. Sarah talks about what working in the industry was like. She, Jo & Vicky discuss how to manage the fact that working as a dog trainer is so stressful and how to reduce your stress levels. Sarah also reveals a really interesting new dog business model which anyone can start providing. KEY TAKEAWAYS Research shows that being a dog behaviourist is incredibly stressful. Sarah´s research has revealed that most dog trainers share remarkably similar personality traits. Weirdly, dog trainers are more likely to be blood group A. Set boundaries and stick to them. Stop treating your business like a hobby. Get off the hamster wheel. Look at things from a client perspective. Ask – is this something my clients really want or need? If it is not, don´t waste your time and energy on it. People are paying a fortune for pre-trained dogs. Add an online booking system to your website and the ability to book a call with you. You learn a lot more from doing than you will from constantly taking courses. Focus on offering the service that you enjoy delivering. Imagine what you want your business to look like in a year. Then, take the necessary steps to get there. Look outside of the dog industry and learn from other successful business owners. BEST MOMENTS ‘From the outset, go, this is what I want to do, and this is what I don´t and be really comfortable with that. ´ ‘We need to make it much easier for people and be much more professional.' ‘Invest in yourself, invest in your business…it will avoid burnout.' Welcome to this episode of The Underdog Vet Podcast! In this episode's Animal Advocate Interview I spoke with Laura Ward a Clinical Animal Behaviourist, who specialises in dog aggression. Laura set up Minds Alike Animal Behaviour after working as a veterinary nurse for 10years. She has always had a passion for how animals think and feel and now dedicates her time to helping owners solve their dog's behavioural issues. Laura firmly believes in using only positive approaches and that having an understanding of how your dog is feeling means you can then appreciate why they are behaving in the ways they are. Laura and I spoke about the importance of using a qualified dog behaviourist, the difference between a dog behaviourist and a dog trainer and why it is vital dog owners understand some dog psychology! Laura used some words that some listeners may not be familiar with, here's some explanations: Desensitisation: Desensitisation means very gradual exposure to the scary thing, starting at a very low level and building up very slowly, at every step on the way, you dog should be happy and comfortable. Positive Reinforcement: Positive reinforcement training means training with rewards, such as a treat, praise or a toy. You give your dog something they want when they're behaving in a way that you like (more info here: https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/dog-advice/training/techniques/positive-reinforcement-training-with-rewards). Socialisation: The process of getting a puppy/dog comfortable and familiar with everyday things. Positive Punishment: The addition or application of something unpleasant to the dog or it's environment eg using a prong or electric collar or hitting the dog. Threshold: The point at which a dog will be triggered by something. This week, Alice and Jessamy chat with the incredible dog behaviourist and trainer Jordan Weizman from Chilled & Fulfilled. If you don't have a dog, or think you're not interested in dogs, HANG ON A MINUTE. The insights from this chat are so deep, insightful, and absolutely applicable to the human experience. Ok. Good boy. In this fascinating conversation we cover balanced training, punishment, living in the moment, thresholds and boundaries, how dogs are different from humans, the importance of being calm, assertive and confident, that everything you do is training, whether you mean it or not, love as action, building trust, love and power, imaginary emotional problems, personalities, communicating in the language that's understood, avoiding mixed messages - it's about what you're doing, not what you're saying, ABC: activity, boundaries, and calm & consistent leadership, meeting physical and social needs, managing post-covid issues, managing social pressures, and shared territories. chilledandfulfilled.com @chilledandfulfilled
In this episode, Louise and Michelle chat to behaviourist Emma Johnston from Speak Dog about her experiences of raw feeding* her working sled dogs. We chat about the different types of raw feeding: DIY; 80/10/10; 80/20 and have a fascinating conversation about the impact that nutrition has on a dog's behaviour. In the wild, dogs, who are natural scavengers rather than predators, would eat up to 44 different varieties of food and this variety is the key to build up gut microbiomes, which can impact behaviour. We also chat through options for natural treats and managing behaviour through decompression chews. *NB Emma is not a nutritionist, so her experiences of raw feeding are very individual, and should not be taken as guidance, but she is a qualified and knowledgeable behaviourist, and she gives us a really interesting insight into raw feeding from this perspective. Emma started in dog sports as a canicrosser, and now rig races, breeds and shows her 12 Siberian Huskies.

Em and Lael discuss: - What is Behaviourism and why are schools still relying on it? - The good girl/good boy paradigm - The negative affects of Behaviourism - Do you look at children through the lens of good and bad? - How do we start making the shift? - How do we manage children's big feelings? - Why self-compassion is an essential ingredient - Children and unmet needs - Looking behind the behaviour- What does that mean? - Why harsher consequences are not the answer and neither are rewards - Supporting students to help them recognise what they need - The smallest piece of connection matters - Why it's hard going against the grain You can find Lael at @laelstone on Instagram or head to her website https://laelstone.com.au/ Find Em @thegradguide_ on Instagram or on Facebook at The Grad Guide Click the link below to join TGG Mentorship- Doors CLOSE Monday 30th Jan 7pm https://www.thegradguide.com.au/mentorship

This week Anna is joined by dog Behaviourist, Karin Lee, who talks about her working Bloodhounds who have helped the police with man-trailing and tracking down people, a bit like in the movies. We chat about the Bloodhound as one of the oldest breeds, and their superior olfaction which has been deployed over the centuries. Bloodhounds were used in the search for Jack the Ripper, and Henry the Eighth loved hunting with them. Bloodhounds became famous again in the 1970's for being the face of the Bonio advert. But sadly the breed is now in decline, as a British Vulnerable breed, and facing extinction. Not a breed for everyone, but one that clearly has captured Karin's heart. We discuss scent work in detail and why any dog can benefit from the enrichment of tapping into their nose potential.Find out more about Karin and man-trailing here.To find a responsible, qualified breeder go to pupstartbreeders.comAnd get a new harness from dogsandhorses.co.ukTry your pup on Paleo Ridge raw food. For more about Anna go to annawebb.co.ukMusic and production by Mike Hanson for Pod People ProductionsCover art by JaijoCover photo by Rhian Ap Gruffydd at Gruff PawtraitsTo advertise on or sponsor A Dog's Life email: info@theloniouspunkproductions.com

There's a lot of talk in business about engagement and employee satisfaction and "leaders" spend a great deal of time (and money on leadership development courses) trying to work out how to get a more "turned on" workforce. Join me this week for a great archive episode! Behaviourist Jez Rose is a is a broadcaster, bee farmer, award-winning author and speaker, with a passion for improving cultures. Quintessentially British, he also has an obsession with tea. In this interview, we speak about Jez's Good Life Project, an innovative research initiative, evidencing the cognitive and emotional impact of nature on human health, wellbeing and behaviour, seeking to understand what nature does to our brain and specifically which activities have the greatest positive impact on us. But what if 'a turned on workforce' really isn't that complicated? What if the answer doesn't lie in fancy techniques and sophisticated models? Perhaps we just need to feel connected with the natural world. In this interview, we talk about Jez's research (present and past, carried out over many decades) which shows that when we connect with nature our motivation, our wellbeing and our productivity all improve. Sounds crazy right? But it makes sense when you think about how even an image of nature can change your perspective on life. I hope you enjoy the episode!
