Do you believe that all non-vegans should die? In part for their needless murder of senseless people like.... cows? And in part because their predatory, cruel, EVIL behavior is providing a model for a future AI program to treat humans like a mindless food source once it inevitably takes over the world? If so... you'd make a good Zizian! This is a weird one. Martin Luther is a hero to countless Christians around the world. The birth of European Protestantism and the Lutheran Church cannot be expressed without citing the 95 theses that Martin Luther posted to the church door on Halloween 1517. A diet of worms follows.Whether you want to celebrate Fred the Wise or Pope Leo X, big changes came to Western Christendom because of Martin Luther's refusal to back down from a fight he believed in. He also believed that God wants people to suffer, so we'll take the whole thing in parts, favoring some things and not others.... We examine the Five Solae: Fidae, Scriptura, Gratia, Christus, and Deo Gloria; and how Protestantism differs from the Imperial tradition from which it was born. We also take a look at contemporary protestors, like Ulrich Zwingli, John Calvin, Menno Simons, the anabaptists of Zurich, and the dramatic climax of Guy Fawkes' treasonous Gun Powder Plot. All this and more....Support us on Patreon or you can get our merch at Spreadshop. A daring conspiracy. A near-catastrophic explosion. A brutal punishment. The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 is one of history's most infamous assassination attempts—but it wasn't just Guy Fawkes who paid the price. On this day in 1606, four of his fellow conspirators met a gruesome end at St Paul's Churchyard. Their execution was a chilling warning to all who dared to defy the crown. What really led them to this fate? How close did they come to changing history forever? And why does this plot still capture our imagination today? Join me as I uncover the full story behind the Gunpowder Plot and the men who risked everything for their cause. #GunpowderPlot #HistoryMystery #GuyFawkes #TudorHistory #StuartHistory #OnThisDay #RememberRemember

We will never know if Guy Fawkes' grim end would have changed had his barrister not gone for the “He only wanted to make the Houses of Parliament lukewarm” defence. Perhaps Mr Fawkes himself would have drawn comfort from the fact that, thanks to Georgia of York, he is now (and for the first time ever presumably) memorialised in podcast form: a medium he could have had no understanding of and likely would have suspected was a concoction of Satan or a Dutch conspiracy.Join our PATREON for ad-free episodes and a monthly bonus episode: www.patreon.com/threebeansaladWith thanks to our editor Laura Grimshaw.Merch now available here: www.threebeansaladshop.comGet in touch: threebeansaladpod@gmail.com @beansaladpod

On November 5, 1605, Guy Fawkes was arrested for his participation in the Gunpowder Plot, a scheme by disaffected Catholic terrorists to blow up King James I and his Parliament using 36 barrels of gunpowder in the basement of the House of Lords. It seems oddly fitting that the presidential general election of 2024 is taking place on the 419th anniversary of that date. It seems very likely that the contest will drag on for days or even weeks, but the result may come down to this question: how many Americans just want to blow it all up? https://docs.google.com/document/d/1G8vSbD4YHaTmzNcF3zu1fzv75w1Hu1tWPLe9XvfiuqQ/edit?usp=sharing https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HIlBqFI4WAk3-ehiqMM3jw_qGT_jmLBpoLXyXGTVfOM/edit?usp=sharing https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/brothers-new-york-arrested-assaulting-law-enforcement-weapon-and-other-charges-during https://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/voisine-v-united-states/ https://www.tributearchive.com/obituaries/21847422/stephen-leigh-voisine/ https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/ballot-boxes-set-fire-portland-vancouver-rcna177611 https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/what-happens-to-trump-s-november-sentencing/ar-AA1tkenR?ocid=BingNewsSerp https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/67656604/united-states-v-trump/?page=2 https://www.politico.com/news/2024/10/02/jack-smith-trump-election-brief-details-00182287 https://rollcall.com/2024/11/04/outlier-or-early-warning-late-iowa-poll-confounds/ https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c7484kwl55qo https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/04/24/americans-take-a-dim-view-of-the-nations-future-look-more-positively-at-the-past/ https://www.wired.com/story/elon-musk-trump-timeline/ https://apnews.com/article/trump-harris-presidential-election-2024-labor-day-151f82b59473d29a448ef1cea9afe471 https://www.wgal.com/article/pennsylvania-ballot-counting-rules-2024/62786512

Kim Charlson will join us for a few minutes on our show to remind us about the fourth annual Audio Description Gala! It is an amazing event and we look forward to hearing all about the latest iteration of an important opportunity to celebrate audio description and those who create it. On Election day, November 5, which is also Guy Fawkes day in the UK, Tuesday Topics will take to the air from 7 to 9 PM on November 5. Fittingly, we think, Tuesday Topics will concentrate on the election. We felt it would be good for us to be available for folks to tell us about their voting experiences this cycle. We will also explore how this election may be different from those in the past. Obviously, we will not be conducting a partisan political exercise. If we were going to do that we would have done it much sooner! We know that many of you will be glued to your media for the results. Perhaps we will talk about how they are functioning but it will be pretty early for us to look at their performance. I have not heard either Presidential candidate make meaningful statements about disabled voters. What does this tell us? Voters with disabilities represent more than 20 percent of the electorate. If there are significant disability elements that we have missed, I hope you will tell us about them! Have you played a role in campaigns this year? Would you tell us about what you have done? It is certainly possible that the Tuesday Topics Team will be talking among ourselves a lot but I hope not! Last time our election show had interesting input from many people. We hope this one will be exciting, informative and relevant.
In today's episode we discuss Rushton Triangular Lodge, a spectactular folly, to commemorate November 5th.
Today on the show... Yes or no - should we still be able let rip with Guy Fawkes in the back yard? Personally, I'm going to let a few rockets off tonight with four teenagers who aren't overly into it and if it was banned... they would barely bat an eye. And professor Nigel Biggar - global head of the free speech union. He just jumped off a plane and came straight to the Editor in Chief. Is our freedom of speech under threat? Bloody oath! This episode contains a mini-history lesson on Britain's biggest loser (insert your own cheap Liz Truss gag here) Guy Fawkes. It's the most explosive episode of Trash Talk yet. A pyrotechnic dragon roared flames into the river Thames during the coronation week of Elizabeth of York in 1487. These explosive displays were employed as a sign of might and majesty throughout the reign of Henry VIII, and Elizabeth I was the first English monarch to establish their own fire master. By the time of the Gunpowder Plot, fireworks were used not only to celebrate, but to commemorate and incite. Professor Suzannah Lipscomb talks to John Withington about the remarkable development of pyrotechnics throughout the Tudor and Stuart eras. Presented by Professor Susannah Lipscomb. With Haunting Season 2024 now over, we're back to our regular business, and this week Eleanor is punting us along misty waterways as we explore the history and folklore of Cambridgeshire! We start off chatting about Guy Fawkes, St Cleer and "Ringing Night," after which we cavort into Cambridgeshire, a soggy county whose landscape today is nothing like it once was.Aside from chatting about the draining of the fens, the county's success in the lucrative field of fossilized poop mining, and the network of secret tunnels under Cambridge itself, Eleanor uses a boar bristle to bake bread, weighs up the possibility of us eating brawn, and teaches us how to make traditional Fenland Mead for week's County Dish. When it comes to folklore, interspersed with some excerpts from next Saturday's Local Legends interview with celebrated author and Cambridge University folklore professor Dr Francis Young, we talk about a surprisingly lively Roman skeleton, protective ghostly bulldogs, hilltop duels with Otherworldly knights, and much more besides. Then it's on to the main event: Eleanor's story, "The Tale of a Toadman" in which she channels the spirit of Edith Porter to narrate a spooky adventure which runs the gamut from hedge magic to bodily mutilation to mythical bog serpents. We really hope you enjoy the episode, and we'll be back on Thursday with a new Magic and Medicines bonus episode about the ancient runic language of Ogham and its connections to the trees of the British Isles, ahead of Saturday's full Local Legends chat with Francis! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Tomorrow night, November 5, is when many in England will celebrate an occasion known as Bonfire Night. They celebrate this day to mark the moment King James I was saved from the Gunpowder Plot (along with many in his government) when Guy Fawkes was thwarted in his attempt to blow up England's Parliament using gunpowder hidden beneath the building during an official government meeting. The event was a terrorist attack of the 17th century, to put the plot in contemporary terms, and the aftermath in England impacted William Shakespeare personally. Newly minted as the King's Men in 1603, the gunpowder plot is taking place just two years later, in 1605. Just one month after the Gunpowder Plot in December of 1605, Shakespeare writes King Lear, which contains many nods to the state of James' government, but the real play most connected to The Gunpowder Plot has to be Macbeth, which I argue was the play whose performance would silence all doubt about William Shakespeare's involvement, or suspected treasonous connections, in the aftermath of The Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Here today to walk us through the history of this event, and help us understand how the Gunpowder Plot connected to Shakespeare, is our guest, James Travers. 1026. This week, we look at the origins of words for men, including the ancient roots of "man," the surprising evolution of the word "guy" from being an insult to just another word, and how "guido" took a different route. Then, for some Halloween fun, we look at the difference between crypts, catacombs, mausoleums, and ossuaries, with an emphasis on their fascinating origins and some famous examples. The "words for men" segment is by Valerie Fridland, a professor of linguistics at the University of Nevada in Reno and the author of "Like, Literally, Dude: Arguing for the Good in Bad English." A version of this story originally appeared on Psychology Today, and you can find her at valeriefridland.com.
In November's episode we mark the old festival of Samhain, and the end of the harvest - while in our ancient woodland the animals, too, are saying goodbye to autumn. We explore the fire folklore that abounds at this time, from Guy Fawkes to Will o' the Wisps, and The Breath sing 'All That You Have Been', a song for this dark month. To lighten the dark Lia tells a tale of spiders and fire, traditional to the Hopi Nation. 'As the Season Turns' is a podcast created by Ffern in collaboration with the nature writer and author of the Seasonal Almanac, Lia Leendertz. Lia is joined by novelist Zoe Gilbert and folk musicians Ríoghnach Connolly and Stuart McCallum of The Breath. Geoff Bird produces and Catriona Bolt is Ffern's in-house production coordinator. Each episode, released on the first of the month, is a guide to what to look out for in the month ahead - from the sky above to the land below. Ffern is an organic fragrance maker based in Somerset. Rocket blasts and exploding fireworks are more terrifying cacophony than calming symphony for many animals. SPCA Scientific Officer Dr Alison Vaughan spoke to Lisa Owen.

There is an old English rhyme that implores every patriotic Briton to "Remember, Remember, the 5th of November." This was the date of a foiled attack on the English parliament known as the Gunpowder Plot. The man poised to light the fuse on the 36 barrels of gunpowder stockpiled under the house of lords in 1605 was the Catholic agitator Guy Fawkes. Since the date of his capture the popular understanding of Fawkes has undergone a remarkable transformation. He has gone from being a nearly forgotten triggerman, to a reviled villain burnt in effigy, to a valiant folk hero, to a symbol for internet "hacktivists." Does "Guy Fawkes" the symbol have anything to do with Guy Fawkes the man? Tune-in and find out how rambunctious political theatre, Hungry Scots, and a man with all sorts of Rizz play a role in the story.

In this episode, summer longs for autumn as we enter among falling leaves the Court of the Rat King. Whatever naked tail, you'll find the well known. A high grade conspiracy, the International Eugenics Conference of 1912, building a double bridge to the 20th and 21st centuries. Long after the House of Cecil framed Guy Fawkes on the fifth of november. The impotent of patriarchy recruiting bourgeois feminists. Mothers of birth control made into Trojan horses, the coco's false eggs, love poems written on the clinker tiles of the Zyklon chambers. The criminalization of unemployment, a hell of secular bio-morality, when socialphysics became sociology. The sacred geometry of statistics, but for whom does the bell curve toll? When we suggest that IQ was initially a measurement of suggestibility, hypnosis as conformity. Even should you be versed in the history of sus-Indiana methods, the madness of forced sterilisation, trauma of the fallen, a molecular vision of severed life. I think you'll find something when we open the medical files of the Nürnberg trial, stained old by Rockefellers yellow fever.
