This week on Open Sources Guelph, we will leave behind a year that introduced us to this guy, the Q Shaman, who broke into the U.S. Capitol with a few thousand of his friends, and then complained about not getting served organic food while in prison post-break-in. The Q Shaman was the mascot for an otherwise terrible 52 weeks of high-octane political and pandemic drama. As usual, we end the year with some awards. This Thursday, December 30, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Worst Politician of 2021. Sadly, the number of candidates for this category were overwhelming this year. Sadly, we don't have Donald Trump to kick around anymore, but he's left an awful lot of bad actors in his wake to take up the cause. But don't think we're any better up here in Canada, because we've got a lot of duds on this side of the border too. From pandemic inaction to bad messaging, who is the worst of the worst in 2021? Good News Story of the Year. You may be surprised to learn that there was good news in 2021. There were some diamonds in the rough, even though that roughness was very extra this year, but we did the hard work to dig deep and find that good news we so desperately need. For the most part, it's about people. The ones whose hard work and perseverance gave us hope, and reminded us that we can still do great things. Dumpster Fire of the Year. Like the Worst Politician of the Year, this category offered an embarrassment of riches, emphasis on the "embarrassment." From the deluge of anti-lockdown/ant-mask/anti-COVID political action, to an election that no one wanted and fewer seemed to care about, to that mess in the U.S. Capitol on January 6 that now half the country wants ignore. We're going to need a bigger dumpster! Best Politician of 2021. Yes, the arc of the universe bent towards awfulness this year, but all that darkness did make the few candidates that shine appear brighter in comparison. As usual, we will end the year end awards show by highlighting the ones who are doing good works, and usually not making a lot of noise about it, but as we enter 2022, we will note again for the record that "Politician" is not always a four-letter word. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

This week on End Credits is the last week of the year, and you know what that means... New Year's Party!!! For our show, the party takes the form of a list, a Best Movies of the Year list. Once again, the whole gang has come together with their carefully considered lists, and as a group we will all reveal the nearly 20 movies that sum up the cinematic story of 2021. This Wednesday, December 29, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson, Tim Phillips, Candice Lepage, and Peter Salmon will discuss: The Best of 2021. It's the most wonderful time of the year, the week after Christmas when we release out Top 5 lists for what we think are the best movies released in the last 12 months. This year's line-up offers a diverse slate of some excellent musicals, plus an epic journey across the desert for a space chosen one. There's also a weird gender-bending French horror movie, and a weird genre-bending tribute to the lost art of magazine writing. But wait, there's also some powerful dramas, and at least one tale about a stolen pig. Spider-men? Maybe next  year. End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

This week on Open Sources Guelph, it's the most wonderful time of the year... Time for our year end specials!! As our Christmas gift to you, we're sharing our annual political movie picks in the seventh annual round of this not-festive, but definitely fun holiday tradition. This year's slate features a probing documentary, two true-life stories, and a silly drama that thinks it's a serious social commentary. Hang up your stockings, and then sit back with some hot coco as we talk about the movies. And politics. This Thursday, December 23, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Adam's Pick #1: Falling Down (1993). "A middle-aged man dealing with both unemployment and divorce, William Foster is having a bad day. When his car breaks down on a Los Angeles highway, he leaves his vehicle and begins a trek across the city to attend his daughter's birthday party. As he makes his way through the urban landscape, William's frustration and bitterness become more evident, resulting in violent encounters with various people, including a vengeful gang and a dutiful veteran cop." Scotty's Pick #1: On the Basis of Sex (2018). "Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a struggling attorney and new mother who faces adversity and numerous obstacles in her fight for equal rights. When Ruth takes on a groundbreaking tax case with her husband, attorney Martin Ginsburg, she knows it could change the direction of her career and the way the courts view gender discrimination." Adam's Pick #2: White Squall (1996). "In 1960, a hardy group of prep school students boards an old-fashioned sailing ship. With Capt. Christopher Sheldon at the helm, the oceangoing voyage is intended to teach the boys fortitude and discipline. But the youthful crew -- among them confident Chuck Gieg, timid Gil Martin and self-satisfied Frank Beaumont - are about to get some unexpected instruction in survival when they get caught in the clutches of a white squall storm." Scotty's Pick #2: What is Democracy? (2018). "This reflection on democracy spans millennia and continents, from ancient Athens' groundbreaking experiment in self-government to capitalism's roots in medieval Italy, and from modern-day Greece grappling the with its financial collapse and mounting refugee crisis to the United States reckoning with its past and the growing gap between rich and poor." Let's just flip on the radio and enjoy some holiday music from the movies, complete with some colour commentary about the origins of the music, and how they're used in the movies they're found in. The system doesn't work. And even worse, we are seeing the symptoms of an educational system that has failed us and fractured our children and society. It's ugly out there. When the education system is treated as an industry, profit is put above the growth of every student. This is why mentorship and community involvement has become more valuable today than it has ever been. There are paths today that put dreams and wellbeing above all else. AJ is a passionate educator. As a student, he did everything right, qualifying for a college football scholarship by way of a stellar academic record. Graduated with a Master's degree and took every suggested path the system gave him. You couldn't ask for a more shining prospect than AJ but in the end, he came out of university with a large debt. It was baffling. Almost immediately AJ began tutoring to eke by but just as fast as he started, he quickly realized the deeper value his passion can offer in mentorship. Enter the EPIC foundation, his concept that the current education system isn't the only path. That today, there are dozens of options that allow individuals to follow their dreams without being burdened by debt. The best part of it all, it no longer has to be at the expense of mental health. It's a game-changing concept but one that isn't new. In fact, it's the very concept that challenges the system today. A call to step up and change the old ways. “It takes a village to raise a child” is perhaps society's most important and most forgotten guiding principle. The system is set up so we can't afford to mold and transform children into the best they can be but instead turn them into how they can make the best money for a society that has forgotten them. Today, AJ (along with other men of purpose) looks to change the flawed system and reach out and pull up the less privileged and pay it all forward. Because everyone deserves a quality education, better yet, everyone deserves great mentorship because we are all great. The enthusiasm in this episode is contagious. We are losing passionate educators every day at a time when we need them most. Fortunately, we have communities like ours that have mentors who share a similar purpose of uplifting each other through episodes like 173 and 209 In this episode, you will learn about 00:02:00 You're not alone 00:05:29 Growing up without a father 00:07:29 Breaking resentment 00:11:39 College football and the systematic agenda 00:18:08 The dangers of isolation 00:21:56 Seeking out mentors 00:26:35 We need to build our men 00:29:32 Mentors not tutors 00:34:02 Educators that make an impact 00:36:15 The start of AJ's mentor/tutor company 00:42:47 Over romanticized educational system 00:45:05 The greatest teachers care 00:47:44 The EPIC Foundation 00:50:03 Stepping up and being part of the solution 00:51:48 Multiple options outside of school 00:54:49 The rejected products in the assembly line 00:59:41 Reach back, pull up, pay it forward 01:01:09 The unbiased truth Connect with AJ Donaldson on: Websites: https://www.epicsouthflorida.org/ Instagram: @epicsouthflorida Facebook: EPIC SFL LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/unitedmentors/

How to Improve Classroom Management with the Good Behavior Game: Session 171 with Jeanne Donaldson

The Behavioral Observations Podcast with Matt Cicoria

If you're a BCBA supporting kids in public school settings, or even if you're a parent who has kids in school, you probably already know that sound classroom management is hard to come by. This phenomenon is perhaps more acute as schools have to contend with the disruptions in continuity imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. As such, it is reasonable to ask what Behavior Analysis has to offer when it comes to helping teachers spend more time teaching, and less time dealing with conduct problems. Luckily, Behavior Analysis has provided us with a tried and true, easily implemented strategy for improving classroom management, and it's called The Good Behavior Game (GBG for short). And in Session 171, I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Jeanne Donaldson from Louisiana State University about the GBG in quite a bit of detail. As you'll discover in the interview, Jeanne earned her Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Florida and is now an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Louisiana State University, where she conducts research on commonly-encountered childhood behavioral challenges. She was the 2018 recipient of the B. F. Skinner Foundation New Applied Researcher Award from APA Division 25. She is currently an Associate Editor at the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. Dr. Donaldson is a BCBA-D and Licensed Behavior Analyst in the state of Louisiana. In this episode we discuss how Jeanne got into Behavior Analysis, we provide an overview of the general structure of the GBG, and we hear what it was like for Jeanne to run the GBG for the first time in a classroom setting. We also talk about procedural variations of the GBG as well as how to troubleshoot when the GBG. In these exchanges, I hope you'll develop an appreciation of the broad applicability of this approach, especially in light of some of the positive outcomes that have been documented in some longitudinal studies of the GBG. At the same time, I always get a bit disappointed when discussing the GBG, because we have an extraordinarily robust intervention ready to offer the world, but as we discuss in this episode, most public school teachers have no clue about it. It's kind of the opposite of the Habit Reversal literature, where the behavioral treatment of tic disorders could be considered standard-of-care these days. As such, for my fellow school-based practitioners, I'd love to hear what you think the barriers are to this intervention. Lastly, Jeanne has also contributed to the Time Out literature, and for Patreon subscribers, we spend the last 15 minutes or so discussing what some current best practices are for using this procedure. Patreon subscribers can get early access and ad-free episodes, along with bonus content like this. Here are links to the resources we discussed: Kindergarten Cop. Perone (2013), The Negative Effects of Positive Reinforcement. Groves and Austin (2018), Does the GBG Evoke Negative Peer Pressure? Joslyn et al (2020), A Practitioner's Guide to the GBG (ed note: highly recommended!). Donaldson et al (2013), An Evaluation of the GBG in Kindergarten Classrooms (data from Jeanne's first use of the GBG, as discussed in the episode). Donaldson is an assistant professor at Smith College where she studies teacher-student interactions and responding to mistakes in early learning. In her book, "From Oops to Aha: Portraits of Learning from Mistakes in Kindergarten," she examines instruction in the classrooms of four public school kindergarten teachers showing the varied ways these interactions happen, and how factors beyond the teachers' control shape their approaches to teaching and contribute to structural inequities.

Andrew J. Donaldson: How To Make Connections Through Mentorship Meet AJ, is a South Florida native and University of Miami alumnus AJ Donaldson has nearly two decades of teaching and academic mentoring experience. In his career, he has successfully serviced more than 500 students in a variety of subjects, crafting a unique and comprehensive methodology that guarantees student cooperation and success. Per his academic mentoring methodology, each student is guaranteed to increase at least one grade level or more. Raised in Miami by a single mother, AJ often leaned on mentors throughout his youth to help guide him and fill the void left by an absent father. The positive encouragement and guidance from his own mentors sparked a desire to provide the same for students in his community. Donaldson's passion to help those in need culminated into the establishment of The EPIC Foundation. Donaldson, as known by several of his mentees, earned a Dual Audio-Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Miami in 2003. He was also a recognized student-athlete, playing the fullback position for the Miami Hurricanes' Division-I football team from 1998 to 2000. Prior to graduating from the University of Miami, AJ volunteered his mentoring services to various private school parents, which eventually yielded the establishment of Donaldson Scholar Mentors, LLC in 2005. The organization was eventually rebranded as United Mentors, LLC in 2012. She lives with her family in the Virginia suburbs, has a blog titled “An Inch of Gray,” and is launching a podcast late 2021.   In this episode, we talked about: The crazy parallels between her life and mine, in 17 year intervals (aka cicada time), our kids traversed the same experiences. How she channeled her grief about losing her son into writing her first book ‘Rare bird' The reality and feelings that come with child loss and the sudden change to the happy life you had Common misconceptions about grief Adjusting to another unexpected life turn by finding herself pregnant at 46 Anna's journey moved her from abject grief to helping others heal through her writing, then getting a surprise second chance at parenting with an unplanned pregnancy at age 46. She hopes to inspire people, through sharing her story, to embrace the life you have versus the life you thought you'd have.   CLICK HERE to read the article that compelled me to reach out to her for this interview.
