Howdy doody Bookshelvers! We're thrilled to bring you another one of our awesome DOGX 2025 speakers today… drumroll please… It's Roz Pooley! We had a ball chatting with Roz and got into a LOT! From sharing her journey from a retail background to becoming a prominent figure in dog training and behaviour, her experiences in dog walking, the evolution of training methods, and the importance of understanding dog behaviour and social dynamics. We also discuss the significance of continuous learning and adapting to the changing landscape of dog training, while also getting Roz's perspective on the unique roles that different dogs play within their social groups. We also couldn't chat with Roz without discussing the overwhelming influence of social media on guardians and the pressure of perfection in dog training and the unrealistic expectations placed on trainers and their dogs. We wax lyrical about a world where a more realistic and empathetic approach to dog training that embraces imperfection and prioritizes the well-being of both dogs AND their owners might exist. We touch on the impact of seasonal changes on dog behaviour and share a spoiler of what Roz will be talking about at DOGX! All this and our usual waffle for your earbud pleasure! Ever wondered who's really in charge during a walk—the owner or the dog? Today, we dive into this age-old question, exploring the subtle power dynamics between humans and their four-legged companions. Are we leading them, or are they leading us?But that's not the only power struggle we're unpacking. We'll also take a controversial look at ancient history and ask: Who were the real slaves—were the Jews truly the ones in bondage, or was there another side to the story? We'll sift through some historical evidence and perspectives to challenge the narratives we think we know.Join us for an episode full of thought-provoking questions, unexpected twists, and a fresh look at who's really in control—whether on a leash or in history books.
The dog walking business in Auckland has boomed, in particular pack walking that can involve groups of as many as 15 dogs being walked at once.
Professional dog walkers say proposed Auckland Council changes will impact their services. The council's looking at limiting the number of dogs people can walk at once to six, with only three of those able to be off a leash. There are also changes proposed to keep dogs out of places with vulnerable wildlife at parks, and to provide some places that are completely dog free. Cassie Jefferies from the Professional Dog Walkers' Association told Francesca Rudkin they take large packs of around 14 so it's affordable for people. She says they take them to the beach or forest, and the cost of petrol is balanced out by taking the numbers they do. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Fractures, sprains, and head trauma were the most common injuries reported. Women accounted for 75 percent of visits, and adults aged 40 to 64 made up 45 percent of the total.… To avoid injuries during dog walking sessions, researchers suggest you should avoid multitasking and be sure you're using a leash or body harness that's appropriate for your dog's size.TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT? TRY THE SARDINE FAST _ If you're like many adults, you might be wishing you could lose a few pounds. And maybe you're one to try new diets, just in case one takes hold and really works. If so, have you tried the sardine fast?… The sardine fast involves consuming only sardines for a set period, typically 72 hours, with the aim of boosting ketones and reducing blood glucose levels. This fast is popular among those following ketogenic diets, as sardines are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and essential nutrients. Participants have reported various health benefits, including increased energy levels, improved concentration, and reduced inflammation.WHAT HAPPENS TO THE WEDDING RINGAfter the marriage ended, what did you do with the wedding ring? What the internet said:• After my ex flew the coop, I tied my wedding ring to a helium balloon and let it loose in the wild blue yonder. It was a symbolic gesture… I must have had my head in the clouds to get married in the first place.• I put mine around the dog's collar and attached the rabies tags to it. It looked better on the dog!• I'm holding onto mine until the next time I have a cavity. Then I'm going to have the dentist melt it down and use it as the filling, so when my ex- does something that drives me nuts I can grind down on it like THISSS.• I threw mine into the river — since I knew it was already polluted.• As for my two used wedding rings from previous marriages, I own a body piercing shop and used them there. I also advertise a free piercing if you bring in an old ring.

For those that don't know, I volunteer at a local animal shelter near my house and spend time walking the dogs there. While this non-profit does tremendous work in the community, it doesn't always operate very effectively as a business. That reminds me very much of the challenges that we see as advisors and there are some real insights that can carry over to what we have to deal with. Today we want to share insights from his recent experiences at a local dog shelter and how they relate to the challenges faced by financial advisors. Let's discuss the importance of effective volunteer recruitment, the parallels between running a non-profit and a financial advisory practice, and the necessity of constant marketing and client qualification. Here's some of what we discuss in this episode: The importance of effective recruitment and finding the right people. Marketing strategies to help you attract clients. I am Savanna Owner and Founder of The Savvy Sitter, Pet Sitting and Dog Walking, LLC. I have grown up with animals all my life and enjoy spending time with them. I have lived in the Winter Garden and Windermere Area for over 30 Years. Though I do not have any animals myself, I love taking care of them and giving them the cuddles, playtime, and treats they deserve. I am an active equestrian, big dogs and horses do not frighten me. When I am not taking care of your Fur Friends, you can find me reading, practicing archery, riding, and figuring out ways to provide additional and great services to our clients!” Doug Keeling “I'm Doug the Dog Guy, and I'm the owner and founder of Bad to the Bone Pet Care. I began pet sitting and dog walking in the Fall of 2013 because I missed my childhood best friend, a Jack Russell named Skip, and because I wanted to combine my passions for animal welfare and entrepreneurship. Bad to the Bone Pet Care was born in 2014, and we have since had the privilege of working with thousands of pets across Northeast and Central Florida. We have won multiple awards for our premium-level professional pet sitting and dog walking, including Pet Sitter of the Year 2023, Best Jacksonville Dog Walking Company 2018-2022, and Best Pet Sitting Service in Northeast Florida 2016 & 2017. I tell everyone I meet, “this is a dream come true for a dream I didn't know I had.” Amber Van Denzen Suarez “Amber is the founder of Atta Boy! Animal Care. She has been working in the animal field for over 16 years. She started in the field by working in the horse industry – stable hand and pet sitter. She then trained as a local Veterinary Kennel hand, Veterinary Assistant and then an Emergency Veterinary Technician for both small and large animals for over 13 years. She has a bachelors of Animal Science from University of Florida.” Heidi Lewis-Pracko “Throughout my childhood, the running joke was always, “Where's Heidi? She's probably with the dogs.” In 4th grade, my family adopted our Welsh Corgi, Angel - the light of my life all the way into college. When she passed away, I was devastated. Luckily for me, 4 months later, we brought another Corgi into the family. I named her Hope, because she was doing exactly that, bringing hope to our family. Thus...Heidi & Hope Pet Services! My true passion came when I began pet sitting on the weekends. Pet sitting showed me the rewards of getting to work with animals one-on-one. I LOVE being the only one to care for people's pets and being relied upon to do so. I finally made the full-time move to Naples in 2016, where I feel lucky every day getting to live in the place that I vacationed all the time growing up. I immediately got into pet sitting upon my move and the rest is history!” Links: Donate to the Association https://www.facebook.com/FLPetServices https://www.instagram.com/flpetassociation/ FLPETSA@gmail.com FlPetAssociation.Org Buy PSC Merch Give us a call! YOU"RE NOT ALONE>>>Website: https://www.nami.org/HomePhone: NAMI HELPLINE 800-950-6264 or TEXT "helpline" to 62640In 2020, the nation took a significant step forward with the enactment of the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act, a bill NAMI advocated for that created a nationwide three-digit number (988) to assist people experiencing a mental health or suicidal crisis. This number is now available in communities across the country.NAMI recognizes that other organizations have drawn distinctions between what diagnoses are considered “mental health conditions” as opposed to “mental illnesses.” We intentionally use the terms “mental health conditions” and “mental illness/es” interchangeably.A mental illness is a condition that affects a person's thinking, feelings, behavior, or mood. These conditions deeply impact day-to-day living and may also affect the ability to relate to others. If you have — or think you might have — a mental illness, the first thing you must know is that you are not alone. Mental health conditions are far more common than you think, mainly because people don't like to, or are scared to, talk about them. However:1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24A mental health condition isn't the result of one event. Research suggests multiple linking causes. Genetics, environment, and lifestyle influence whether someone develops a mental health condition. A stressful job or home life makes some people more susceptible, as do traumatic life events. Biochemical processes and circuits and basic brain structure may play a role, too.None of this means that you're broken or that you, or your family, did something “wrong.” Mental illness is no one's fault. And for many people, recovery — including meaningful roles in social life, school, and work — is possible, especially when you start treatment early and play a strong role in your own recovery process.THERE'S HELP & HOPE...

I am so excited to be sharing my conversation with Andrew Collin! Andrew is a comedian, actor, and writer who I have listened to as a guest on one of my favorite podcasts for almost five years. In this episode, Andrew talks about his life before and after being introduced to the world of comedy. Andrew seriously has nine lives He's lived in LA, Miami, New York City, and St. Louis and has had a multitude of careers, from dog walking to fish mongering. Andrew became sober after noticing that the people whom he most looked up to in life refrained from drinking alcohol. Now, five years later, Andrew has slowly begun to incorporate alcohol back into his life and shares the good and bad parts of moderation. I hope you all enjoy! To follow Andrew and his comedy, you can check him out on Instagram @andrewtcollin and listen to his podcast Puddles wherever you get your podcasts. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/zoescurletis/support

How much does it cost you to walk a dog or stay overnight in a client's home? While we typically consider expenses such as gas, insurance, and experience, what else should we include? Jill Jaffe, owner of "Fur Paws' Sake," joins the show to discuss why she's so passionate about offering "almost overnights" instead of actual overnights to her clients. Jill draws on the lessons she learned from her spirited little pup, Lily, emphasizing that running a business involves more than just financial costs. Main topics: From freakout to freedom Stopped overnights Understanding the costs Giving alternative options Main takeaway: Don't let clients or your business dictate what you should sacrifice in your own life. About our guest: Since childhood, Jill Jaffe has had a deep passion for animals and a strong desire to provide them with professional care. Despite her career as an executive administrative assistant in the entertainment and financial banking industries, fate led her to follow her true calling. Before her corporate journey, Jill eagerly immersed herself in animal care while in college. She began pet sitting for neighbors and referrals, gaining extensive experience with a variety of domesticated pets and even helping rehabilitate wildlife. Her volunteer work at the Los Angeles Wildlife Waystation in the Los Angeles Mountains included caring for orphaned baby raccoons, opossums, squirrels, crows, turkey vultures, sparrows, and finches. During her time at Moorpark College from 1992 to 1994, she studied diverse courses within the Exotic Animal Training and Management (EATM) program, focusing on exotic animal behavior and diversity, particularly big cats and primates at the school's zoo. After facing two corporate layoffs, Jill decided it was time for a change. In the summer of 2013, she founded Fur Paws Sake Pet Sitting and Dog Walking. She quickly acquired CPR and Pet First Aid training, joined the Pet Sitters International Association, and secured business liability coverage and bonding. These measures assured her clients that their beloved pets would always be in capable hands. Starting from scratch, Jill built her client base through social media, a website for online visibility, and traditional networking efforts to spread the word about her exceptional pet care services. She cherishes the opportunity to earn the trust of every pet owner and takes great pride in delivering top-notch service in the pet sitting and dog walking industry. With over 30 years of experience, Jill has been responsible for a wide range of animals, serving friends, extended family, neighbors, and referrals. Her responsibilities include daily feedings, administering medication, potty breaks, cleaning small pet enclosures, watering plants, conducting routine home security checks, and providing companionship to pets. Pet owners consistently appreciate her meticulous attention to detail and unwavering dedication, knowing that their non-human companions are in good hands and their homes are well-maintained upon their return.
