We stand on the precipice, one episode away from THE PRIME! Before that, though, we discuss The Bachelors, a fantastic novel chock full of some of the strangest characters Spark has written, which is really saying something. Mediums, epileptics, blackmail, criminality, and much, much more abound in this one. And one of the funniest scenes yet involving a gentleman's club, a game of hide-and-seek, and drapes. From Belgrade and London, the remarkable novelist, poet and memoirist, Vesna Goldsworthy. She spoke to Eleanor Wachtel in 2019 about her novel Monsieur Ka, an ingenious re-working of Tolstoy's masterpiece, Anna Karenina — picking up where his story left off. Set in post-war London and focusing on the life of Anna's abandoned son, it's an entertaining and affecting story about identity, exile and fiction.
Jo Francis Penn is English, currently living in Bath. As an 11-year-old, she lived in Malawi, Africa; in her teens she lived for a short period in Israel; and as a young adult she lived in New Zealand and Australia. Once back in the UK, she made a career change, moving from tech into writing fiction and non-fiction. Her international relocations and ongoing travels inform her trove of fiction thrillers, and dark fantasy stories, and her entrepreneurial savvy with the business side of writing informs her collection of non-fiction books. Jo is also an avid walker, often solo-hiking long distances. And in this episode we talk about the circumstances that lead Jo to walk three ancient way walks, including the Camino from Porto in the north of Portugal, to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, and her recently-released, aptly titled memoir, Pilgrimage: Lessons Learned From Walking Three Ancient Ways.
In this episode, we have a conversation with the visionary filmmaker that is Mark Jenkin.Mark Kermode referred to his debut feature film, Bait (2019) as a "genuine modern masterpiece, which establishes Jenkin as one of the most arresting and intriguing British film-makers of his generation.”The film premiered at Berlinale, and won him the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. His unique style and methods make for strikingly powerful short films. This screed against mass-media appeared in a 1953 issue of The New York Times, it was an excerpt from an article written by British novelist J.B. Priestly for The Newstatesman. Sophie Harman is Professor of International Politics at Queen May University of London with interests spanning global health, African Agency, film and visual methods, and gender politics. Sophie has pushed the boundaries of International Relations (IR) scholarship more than most, notably through her use of visual mediums to convey the lived experience of those at the receiving end of global health programmes. In 2019, she was nominated for the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer for her work on the feature film Pili which tells the story of women living with HIV/AIDS in Tanzania. Sophie has recently published the book Seeing Politics: Film, Visual Method and International Relation and was awarded the Joni Lovenduski Prize for outstanding professional achievement by a mid-career scholar by the Political Science Association (PSA) in 2018. In a wide-ranging conversation, we discuss why visual politics, as well as emotion, are important frontiers for the future of IR scholarship. Sophie reflects on the trials and tribulations of pursuing a film project in a profession not known for risk-taking. Beyond the razmataz of the BAFTA red carpet, we discuss how the film Pili provides a portal into questions of global health, power relations, colonial legacies, and gender inequity. Sophie highlights the importance of storytelling and giving space to those stories which are almost never heard in the corridors of power. Recalling James C. Scott's famous work, Weapons of the Weak, we also discuss how people at the receiving end of global governance programmes make sense of politics and reclaim agency in their dealings with often remote international bureaucracies. Sophie also tackles head on the pathologies of reproducing tired gender narratives in a context of accelerating global health securitization and privatization, as well as why getting the basics right would be a good start for an international sector beset by problems of accountability. And we also find time for a few words on Covid-19. Sophie can be found here: https://www.qmul.ac.uk/politics/staff/profiles/harmansophie.html She tweets @DrSophieHarman Projects and publications we discussed include: The film PILI: Pili lives in rural Tanzania, working the fields for less than $2 a day to feed her two children and struggling to manage her HIV-positive status in secret. Corinna Faith is a British Writer and Director who recently made her feature debut with The Power. The Power tells the story of a young nurse forced to work the night shift in a crumbling hospital during a time when England was plunged into mandatory blackouts every night to conserve power. As she works her shifts by candlelight, a terrifying presence threatens to consume her and everyone around her. The Power is a very atmospheric and spooky supernatural thriller, and the concept of nightly blackouts in an asylum is very eerie. The Power is now streaming on Shudder. Corrina and I discussed the making of The Power, her supernatural and paranormal research for the movie, and big director lessons learned from her first feature. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Corinna. Re-visit the 70s. The 70s was a very innovative time for filmmakers in the wake of the dissolving of the studio system. Here you saw the unbridled rise of auteur and renegade filmmakers, and as far as decades, none of them compare to the '70s. Prior to making The Power, Corinna's cinema diet consisted of a number of 70's films, focusing intently on the work of Robert Altman. The edge and sophistication of the ‘70s sensibility shine through in The Power and gives it a very noticeable quality of filmmaking and interesting storytelling. It also helped that the story took place in the ‘70s. If you're a student of film, it would behoove you greatly to dive into this decade as much as possible as it was a golden age for independent film and maverick directors. Take care of your health. Ok, I'll admit this is a boring one, but before you wring me out on Twitter, think about it. Corrina learned that your health is one of your greatest assets as a director, which is absolutely true but often the last thing to be taken care of. We've talked about this a lot, but yes, while making your films, there will be sleepless nights, there will be uphill battles, way too much coffee, and aching bones, but it benefits you as a director to take care of your health as much as you can. Being healthier increases your physical endurance, emotional resilience, problem-solving ability, and overall cognition, which are all things you will need a high supply of when you're on set. So, as hard as it is, do what you can to get adequate sleep, exercise, and a decent diet. Find a mentor/cheerleader. It is a difficult long slog to get movies made, things go wrong, projects get canceled, but it's important to keep the faith. When Corinna's first project was unexpectedly canceled, she was very dismayed, but she had a pivotal mentor who expressed confidence in her work, and that's all she needed to push through the difficult times. Sometimes all it takes is for one person to believe in you for you to believe in yourself enough to push forward during adversity. This worked very well for Corinna, who years ago was in a very difficult and frustrating place but now has an awesome first feature under her belt. Try to find those mentors out there whose feedback can help shape your ability, they can not only improve your craft, but their confidence in you can help you push through the tough times. You’ll hear in this interview that my best friend stopped drinking in 2018 and that brought the question about my own relationship with alcohol to the forefront too. Today we’re talking about how you can explore that question for yourself, and what that might mean. Our discussion includes: -How being sober curious is all about questioning-How most drinkers are drinking by default or habitual drinking, rather than consciously drinking-How alcohol contributes to anxiety, exhaustion, disturbed sleep, and more-That perhaps life isn’t supposed to be comfortable, and what that means-The 5 different kinds of problem drinkers and how the black/white idea of problem drinking may be outdated-How you can actually survive parties being sober-Healthier ways we can escape and revive from the daily grind of lifeTo find out more about Ruby, head to: www.rubywarrington.com or www.the-numinous.com.To keep up with the Club SODA NYC events, head here: https://www.clubsoda.nyc/events/The TIME article with the 5 Different Categories of Problem Drinking: http://time.com/5464477/types-of-alcohol-use-disorder/---To learn more about Kate, the host of Here to Thrive: www.thrive.how--- See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Back for his No Sleep 'til Sudbury sophomore turn from the UK is my pal Joel McIver, one of my favourite writers and one hell of a good man. Joel proposed an idea for his second episode which I instantly liked - songs he believes will still be popular 100 years from now. Some of these song selections perplexed me when I first saw Joel's list, but the man's rationale stands up and it makes for some great discussion. We talk about the childish filth found in some Beatles lyrics (!), what it means to be a 'git', the curious popularity of the Foo Fighters, and the perceived future of heavy metal and popular music in general. Enjoy! McIver's playlist: The Beatles - Back in the USSR Black Sabbath - War Pigs David Bowie - Changes Fairport Convention - Come All Ye Foo Fighters - Times Like These Ice T - New Jack Hustler Elvis Presley - That's All Right Mama
