In the most quoted chapter of the Old Testament in the New Testament, Isaiah promises that the coming King will usher in his rule through suffering in our place.
In Isaiah 50, we read the third servant songs about the coming Servant King who will save his people completely through perfect obedience. This servant King is none other than Jesus who was obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Let all the earth find salvation in the new covenant through God's servant Jesus Christ.
No matter how old you are or how young you are, you need friends. But why do you need friends? What kind of friend do you need to be? In this message, our guest Josh Varnedoe unpacks the teaching of Proverbs on friendship to help us.
Christ did not come to save individual people, as wonderful as our salvation is. Christ came to gather a people, to build his church. May we never lose the wonder of what Christ has done in reconciling all people as one in the church.
Many say these verses are the heart of Paul's gospel. They tell us bad people don't go to heaven, but good people don't go to heaven either. The only people that will go to heaven are those that boast, salvation is by grace in Christ alone.
Unless we understand the problem, we will not understand the solution. Unless we understand the true reality of our sin, we will not understand the salvation God has provided in Jesus. These verses help us to realize that apart from the mercy of God, we are completely corrupted by sin and utterly unable to free ourselves from its grasp.
Though the Lord is sovereign over all things, this no way diminishes human responsibility. In fact, God chooses to use the prayers of his saints to accomplish his purposes... including the prayer that Paul prays in this section of Ephesians!
After discussing how we have been blessed before the foundation of the world, Ephesians reminds us of how we have been blessed in this life. We have been redeemed! We have come to understand the mystery of what God is going in Christ!
The story of our salvation did not begin with our decision or even our conversation. The story of our salvation began in eternity past when God determined to save a people for himself. Let us praise God the Father, who chose to save sinners for the praise of his glory!
Living in secret sin is most miserable. Yet, in Psalm 51, David teaches us how to pray our way out of sin. One of the remarkable features of this psalm is the person of whom David's sin is ultimately against. In the end, his faith that God has forgiven him of his most egregious sin causes his joy to overflow in expressive praise. Praise the Lord who alone transforms guilty sinners into sincere worshippers of the living God.
Just hours before his betrayal, what does he pray for his disciples? What does he long for all who follow him to know? In a word, he longs for them to not be anxious, because they are more valuable than they could imagine & more purposed than they could dream.
In this passage, Jesus prays something that has never been prayed in all of biblical history, "Glorify me!" Yet, Jesus' glorification meant suffering. The greatness of God is displayed in the weakness of the cross. And so, Jesus prays, "Glorify me by handing me over." In so doing, he brings many sons to glory. The whole purpose of our existence is to see the glory of God in saving sinners through Jesus Christ.
What difference does the Holy Spirit make? In today's passage, Jesus teaches that the Spirit is so essential - so vital to our mission in life - that to go forward apart from the Spirit would be unimaginable!
