May 4, 2025, The Rev. Dr. Brian Lays, Scripture: Psalm 30; John 21:1–19
Up To Jerusalem - Teaching 12 Scripture: Psalm 91,John 14:15-31, John 15, 1 Peter 4:12-13, Acts 14:22,Matthew 10:22, 2 Timothy 3;12, Matthew 5:10-12. Psalm 91 tells us that our God can be trusted. This psalm has words that Jesus depended on and held onto as He headed Up to Jerusalem. He was able to face the trial, trouble and tribulation that came on the road to the cross. Our story today picks up with Jesus saying, “If you love me, keep my commands.” This is not about earning eternal life, it's about our relationship of love with The One who showed His love for us at the cross. As we love Him we show that in genuine obedience (keep my commands). God's desire is that we mature in faith and that our very lives reflect Him through our speech and behavior and that we model Christ's example. Then Jesus shares that He will send an Advocate to help. This Advocate is the One who speaks truth. A counselor, encourager, comforter who will help us and be with us forever - The Holy Spirit. God's supernatural presence and power in our lives. We are not called to live a life believing that God exists - we are called to live a supernatural life - we are called to live a life utterly dependent on the presence of God the Holy Spirit in our lives. Jesus assures His disciples and us that we are never alone. Jesus says, “I am in my Father, you are in Me, and I am in you.” (This is relationship). Jesus goes on to tell them the Holy Spirit (The Advocate) is coming and will be with us, and then He encourages them not to worry or be afraid. These words are for us today - He will never abandon us - We can trust Him. Jesus tells them He gives them peace - not the kind of peace the world gives, but His peace. Shalom. Shalom describes a relationship with the Living God where everything is done in harmony with His plan and purpose. It is supernatural peace. And we are encouraged to allow it to overwhelm our hearts and souls. As we continue reading Jesus tells us He is the True Vine, and God the Father is the Gardener. Pastor addresses a concern that most Bible translations may have this line inaccurately translated. Most Bibles say the Gardener “cuts off” branches that bear no fruit. However, let's explore how a vineyard gardener actually cares for a vine with branches that are bearing no grapes. What he does is he lifts up the branches from the ground and brings them into the sun, lifting them up and securing them in a way they can produce fruit. Pastor believes this is what Jesus is saying here - that this is not a word of law, but instead a word of comfort. Jesus says “every branch IN ME that is not producing fruit, the Father lifts up so that it can produce fruit. Pastor's argument is this: the Bible translations tell us Jesus says, “the Father cuts off every branch IN ME that bears no fruit .” But then Jesus says if you abide IN ME you will bear much fruit.” Where is continuity in these verses? Let's take a look at the original Greek. The verse says: “He “airō” every branch in Me that bears no fruit, and every branch that does bear fruit, He “koptō” to make it even more fruitful.” The words used in the original Greek are airō and koptō. airō can mean to cut off but the primary meaning of the word is to be lifted up. koptō means to be cut off (pruned). As we learned earlier those who care for grapevines - tell us that a grapevine only produces fruit when it is lifted up from the ground and lifted into the sun. When we are in Jesus and not producing fruit, the Gardener (the Father) lifts us up, airō us up into the “Son” so that we will produce fruit, we are not cut off but lifted up. And when we are producing fruit the Gardener prunes, koptō us so that we will produce even more fruit. When we remain in Jesus - the Vine - we will bear fruit because the Father - Gardener - lifts us up and prunes us so we produce more fruit. Jesus goes on to talk about: ⁃ True joy ⁃ Loving others ⁃ That He calls us “friend” ⁃ Answered prayer ⁃ Persecution These are the things Jesus shared on the night He was betrayed and arrested because He loved His disciples and He loves us and He wants us connected to Him - abiding in Him and prepared for what is to come. April 6, 2025, The Rev. Lauren Scott, Scripture: Psalm 126; Isaiah 43:16–21
Life is hard. Isn't it? Beats you down. Kicks you. Then picks you up and does it again. But when the valley is dark, who's your anchor? Jesus, of course. But also St. Joseph, the Comfort of the Afflicted. Today, we unpack how this silent saint, who faced poverty, exile, and doubt, lifts us from misery. He's no statue. He hears your cry. He is a brother who's been there: losing Jesus, shielding Mary, and battling demons. The Church hands us his playbook: the seven corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Feed the hungry, forgive the sinner, comfort the broken—he lived it, even when afflicted. Your challenge: pick one work today. Drop off a meal, forgive a grudge, pray for a lost soul—act now, even if you're hurting. St. Joseph's strength wasn't a gift; it was forged. Lean on him, then be him for someone else. Hit play, grab your busted-up heart, and let's climb out of the pit together. Keywords: St. Joseph, Catholic men, Comfort of the Afflicted, Lent reflection, works of mercy, strength, faith, Manly Catholic podcast Products/References: Catechism: Paragraph 2447 Scripture: Psalm 23:4 Tradition: St. Teresa of Avila, St. Thomas Aquinas Powerful Quotes: “You don't have to feel strong to be strong. St. Joseph didn't have a cushy life... but he was a pillar anyway.” “Lean on St. Joseph when you are afflicted and then turn around and comfort someone else—that is being a man strong enough to hurt and still help.” “If we are seeing someone living consistently in a life of sin and we don't try to correct them, are we actually being a loving person? The answer is no.”Key Takeaway:Act today: do one work of mercy—feed someone, forgive someone, pray for someone. Strength starts when you move, not when you feel ready. The Psalms is the divinely inspired prayer book, but when you open this prayer book, the first page is not a prayer. It's a meditation on meditation. Meditation is not the same as studying the Bible. In studying the Bible you're just learning information. Meditation takes what you've learned and does something with it. And according to the Psalms, meditation is actually the key to prayer. Psalm 1 tells us 1) the priority, 2) the promise, 3) the products, 4) the practice, and 5) the problem and solution of meditation. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 23, 2014. Series: The Prayer of Prayers. Scripture: Psalm 1:1-6; 2:1-12. The Lord's Prayer is quite a workout. You're asking for a lot of things: daily bread, deliver us from evil. But at the end, you rest in God. The last phrase in the Lord's Prayer is, “For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever, amen.” Is that just a rhetorical flourish? After all, it doesn't seem to be a prayer. But ancient commentators have said this is a prayer of repose. You realize all the things you've been looking for are already there in God. In Psalm 27 we have an example of a prayer of repose, and it's exactly what the end of the Lord's Prayer embodies. This is a psalm of David, and we learn 1) what he's facing, 2) what he does about it, 3) how he does it, and 4) why he's confident it will work. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 16, 2014. Series: The Prayer of Prayers. Scripture: Psalm 27:1-14. We don't see that envy is as terrible as it really is. Envy is wanting somebody else's life. Do you know what that does? It sucks the joy out of the life you actually have. In Psalm 73, the psalmist is living as good a life as he can, and everything is going wrong. And on top of that, he sees a lot of other people who are corrupt and they're having a great life. What is the solution? A particular kind of prayer. There are four things the psalmist does in prayer that can only be done in prayer: 1) he admits the worst, 2) he sees the whole, 3) he grasps God's grace, and 4) he reorders the loves of his heart. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 9, 2014. Series: The Prayer of Prayers. Scripture: Psalm 73:1-3, 13-26. What if I told you there was a process and no matter how much you blew up your life, if you used this process, there would be a way to come out the other side whole? Well, here it is. It's what the Bible calls repentance. You say, “You mean just saying I'm sorry?” But that reveals you don't understand the power of this kind of prayer. This kind of prayer, if you do it in an ongoing way, will finally enable you to change deeply from the inside out. Looking at Psalm 51, we'll see 1) what one thing must you stop doing, 2) what two things must you start doing, and 3) where you get the power to do those two things. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 2, 2014. Series: The Prayer of Prayers. Scripture: Psalm 51:1-19. Hallowed is an old English word that means to treat something as sacred. It means to be captivated, astonished, melted with grateful joy for who God is and what he has done. For many years, I felt I didn't know how to praise God, because nobody ever gave me specifics. As we look now at one phrase in the Lord's Prayer, “Hallowed be thy name,” we'll look at five aspects that are all needed if we're going to praise. There are five aspects to praise and adoration: 1) thinking, 2) expressing, 3) appraising, 4) beholding, and 5) resting. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on October 5, 2014. Series: The Prayer of Prayers. Scripture: Psalm 63:1-11.
