He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.'”The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7If you worship me, it will all be yours.”Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'”The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. Because we are Jesus people, we want all that Jesus has for us, and that means being a Spirit-empowered people. We live in a time with more Christian content and resources than ever before, yet the church can feel weaker and less effective than what we see in Scripture. The early church had far less than we do, and yet the gospel spread like wildfire because they were filled with the Holy Spirit in an extraordinary way. Jesus told His disciples to wait until they received power from the Spirit, showing that the Holy Spirit is not an optional extra but a necessity for the mission. This invites us to consider what we believe “normal” Christianity is—whether it's shaped by tradition or by the Word of God—and to recognize the two primary works of the Holy Spirit: His indwelling work in every believer at salvation, and His ongoing infilling that empowers us again and again. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Luke 1:39-45"At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”

As we approach Christmas, we're reminded that while this season brings joy to many, it can amplify grief, loneliness, and loss for others. The sermon draws us into John 14, where Jesus promises not to leave us as orphans, but to send the Comforterthe Holy Spiritwho will never abandon us. This isn't just theological comfort; it's deeply personal. The Comforter understands our pain because Jesus himself was a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. He wept at Lazarus's tomb. He experienced betrayal and abandonment. When we bring our broken hearts to Him, we're not bringing them to someone who only knows pain theoreticallywe're bringing them to someone who has walked through it himself. The message beautifully explains that grief is the price we pay for love, and if we've loved deeply, we'll grieve deeply. But here's the hope: the Comforter doesn't rush our grief or shame our tears. He walks with us through empty chairs at the dinner table, through the deafening silence of loss, through damaged relationships and confusing seasons. This Christmas, we're invited to trust that God has come to meet us right where we arenot demanding we pretend everything is okay, but offering His presence, peace, and strength to carry our burdens.

It can be hard to know exactly how to respond to the birth of Jesus Christ. In Luke 1:39-45, we have the unique opportunity to see Elizabeth's response to the presence of Jesus in the womb. The text tells us that she is "filled with the Holy Spirit" as she announces the great blessing of Jesus' presence. Considering her words, we learn three Spirit-filled responses to Jesus' arrival as a baby.

Luke 2:25-32Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace.For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.”

Because I sounded strangely intoxicated—yet I hadn't had a drop. Only later did I realize the Holy Spirit was using that moment to steer me toward this far more important episode. Here, I'm back in the impartial referee uniform, not rooting for a side, just holding up the puzzle pieces. And what they reveal about the Church today is unsettling. It all started when I watched four unrelated movies that turned out to share the same core scene: a woman devoted to the wrong man, getting drunk, and suddenly recognizing the right one. That pattern wasn't random.
