ABOUT THIS EPISODE It might be easier to list the things Shea Rubenstein isn't than those he is. A construction professional and real estate developer, Shea is also a veritable chessed (kindness) machine. Under the aegis of his JCC of Marine Park (Brooklyn), he has launched an astonishing number and array of social services, including job training and placement, mentorship, food rescue, anti-hunger programs, computer proficiency clinics and much more. He is also a musician - instrumentalist, composer and singer - to boot; his most recent album is a collection of Yiddish songs dedicated to Holocaust survivors, which he distributed free of charge to this cherished but aging population. Shea organizes conferences for business professionals of all stripes, and we sat down in November 2018 at the Hilton Hotel in Staten Island, capping off the day-long TribeWorks event. This gathering was unique in that it coalesced over a dozen Jewish job service organizations, leveraging their joint resources and connections to present exceptional speakers and programming to several hundred eager participants. Shea Rubenstein is a force in business and philanthropy, but at his core is the ultimate mentsch, generous with his time, resources and expertise in supporting many emerging entrepreneurs and others along their respective journeys. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world. Episode 059 - The Mother of Naftali, H"yd: A Conversation with Racheli Fraenkel

Jews You Should Know

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 17, 2018 70:21

ABOUT THIS EPISODE It was 3 AM on an otherwise ordinary Thursday night when Racheli Fraenkel and family received a knock at their door that would change their lives. Their eleventh-grade son, Naftali, had been returning home from his boarding school along with a friend, Gilad Shaar, but never showed up. Within hours authorities realized that these two boys, along with a third - Eyal Yifrach - had been captured by Hamas terrorists. The 18 days that followed were a whirlwind of activity, with the entire Jewish world gripped by the news of the missing "Three Boys." #BringBackOurBoys became a rallying cry for prayer gatherings, social media campaigns and a nearly unprecedented outpouring of love and display of Jewish unity. Tragically, the three youngsters, it was later learned, had been murdered in the first moments of their capture. But the actions and sentiments their story triggered profoundly impacted the Jewish world. Racheli Fraenkel is a private, soft-spoken woman, a Torah teacher and mentor to many other women as a yoetzet halacha (Jewish legal advisor in areas of family law). Through this experience, however, she has chosen to share widely and publicly of her own process in navigating this profound loss. Along the way, she has inspired - though she herself disdains the term - thousands of listeners and observers. Her dignity, humility, honesty and vulnerability have drawn people to hear and learn from her. Jews You Should Know listeners are now privileged with that same opportunity. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world. ABOUT THIS EPISODE It's not often you meet someone who has attended or taught at Harvard, Oxford, Stanford, Princeton and MIT...but that is precisely what Jeremy England has done in his young career. Already hailed at the "next Darwin" for the implication of his work on "origin-of-life" theory, he is much more interested in the "next mitzvah" than such sensationalist or speculative projections. Growing up in New Hampshire to a Survivor mother and Lutheran father, Jeremy was culturally but not religiously educated. However, encountering "naked hostility" towards Israel while studying at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, he began learning Hebrew, visiting Israel and examining the intellectual underpinnings of his Jewish roots. Today, Jeremy England is an associate professor of physics at MIT, and one of the brightest young minds in the firmament of elite academia. He is also a committed and passionate Jew, whose love of Torah wisdom shines through in this remarkable interview. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world.
