Mr. Yinka Ogunleye (Yinka) is an adept and passionate leader in Strategy and Planning with over two (2) decades of experience; dedicated to driving innovation and results across multi-company structured organizations in the Energy, Oil and Gas industry. He has proven ability with broad exposures to manage strategy and planning processes, nurture the growth of business through development of company objectives, targets and performance aspirations. He has exposures covering Oil Exploration, Oil Production and Gas Businesses in the upstream and midstream sectors. He started his career as a Database Administrator, Financial Systems with Pan Ocean Oil Corporation Nigeria Limited. His career had since traversed Information Technology, Business Development, Technical and Commercial functions. He had the coordinating role of Strategy Development across six (6) business arms of a Group, spanning upstream Oil and Gas, Energy development, Pipeline, Gas Processing and Monetization. He joined Amazon Energy Group in 2020 as Vice President New Ventures, and Group Head Strategy and Planning. In these roles he was among several functions coordinating the Strategy and Planning programs and initiatives for incubating projects through creative commercial arrangements; developing new business opportunities and partnerships; and superintending over the Group's corporate strategy, planning and performance program. Yinka holds a Bachelor's degree in Zoology and a Master's Degree in Computer Science from the Lagos State University, Ojo. He obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Information Technology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure. He also obtained an MBA from the Lagos Business School, and was on exchange program to the IESE Business School, University of Navarra, Barcelona, Spain where he earned a certificate in Entrepreneurship and Competitive Strategy. He is a certified Project Management Practitioner, Balance Scorecard Professional and Performance Management Practitioner. He has been doing his Doctoral studies where he is currently researching on Innovation and Responsible Leadership at the Gordon's Institute of Business Science, South Africa. He holds a Certificate Business Analytics at the Harvard Business School. Yinka is an entrepreneur. He is the founder of a start-up called Riba-x(www.riba-x.com), a Search, Connect and Communities platform for small businesses and communities of shared interests. He also runs AtriumData Solutions and Services Limited, a Strategy and Project Consulting company Yinka is also currently into Agri-business, where he is developing a Palm Oil plantation and Pig Farm. Key Takeaways 1. You can still reach your end-goal even if you're traveling a different path - Yinka was always passionate about IT growing up. He had a computer scientist father and learned coding languages like C++ and worked with databases. He wanted to pursue a degree in Computer Science but unfortunately, didn't make the cut. Yinka instead pursued a degree in Zoology yet he still managed to land a IT role post-graduation. 2. Don't be afraid to branch out - After learning Zoology, specializing in genetics and working various roles in the IT field, Yinka went to pursue an MBA in Business and tackled his entrepreneur side. Exploring your interests and diversifying your knowledge is a great way to live a fulfilling life. 3. Mentor and mentee relationships can have different forms - For Yinka, the mentor-mentee dynamic involved his mentor asking questions and probing his (the mentee's) thoughts rather than providing advice directly. This pushed Yinka to either mull over his mentor's prompts or provide an answer to his mentor's questions, causing him to engage in deep thinking. Today, Yinka and his mentor are as close as brothers. 4. Entrepreneurship can be a lonely journey - Entrepreneurship can be extremely gratifying but it also comes with its ups and downs. Yinka founded “Dago” with his good friend, now turned business partner. Unfortunately, the company hit a brick wall and the business relationship between Yinka and his friend fell apart. Today, Yinka repackaged the idea of Dago and turned it into a new project called “Riba-x.” 5. Ensure you derive pleasure from what you do - Whether it's through your job, hobbies or relationships, make sure that what you are investing in brings you joy. If you pursue things that you derive pleasure from, you're more likely to feel content with it despite any drawbacks. Applying this to a career, if you are doing something you love every single day, eventually money comes second to your happiness. Sometimes life may seem to be unfair; sometimes life may choose to throw certain unexpected mishaps and challenges to you and then you tend to ask some pertinent questions: Why me? What did i do wrong? Why is this happening to me? Who did i offend? Ever asked these questions? The truth is; people who ask these questions tend to think that life has given them no option. In this thought-provoking episode, I have the pleasure and the honor of having Ethel Olomu; She is such an amazing lady. Her presence oozes so much light and positivity. In this episode, Ethel shared her thought-provoking story as a stage 4 cancer survivor. This story will bring tears to your eyes. Please grab a box of tissue paper as you listen. In her exact words, “I was running a scholarship programme at the Lagos Business School when I felt a sharp pain in my breast. It felt like a lump in one of my breasts, little did I know that I was battling with breast cancer at an advanced stage. It was no easy battle as getting the needed care for breast cancer is a major challenge in Nigeria, as the nation has an acute shortage of cancer specialists and required equipment.”“I went to both general and teaching hospitals in Port Harcourt Nigeria and the doctors told me not to worry about it. I was eventually booked for surgery where they removed the lump. They said the surgery done was lumpectomy. They also told me that they would run a laboratory analysis on the removed lump to know what exactly the issue was. At that time, nobody was talking about breast cancer because it wasn't up for discussion then.” “Four weeks after the tests, my breast swelled like a balloon; when I picked up my result, they told me that nothing cancerous was found, I was somewhat happy and sad; but how come I cried, what could then be causing all this pain?“It was an Indian hospital that eventually diagnosed my condition after eight months of acute pain. When the sample of the fluid gushing out breast eventually got to India, the Indian doctors said they were not sure that the person that owned the sample was still alive. At then point; stage four breast cancer was diagnosed. The result showed that the cancer had spread all over my body and there was nothing that could be done again. They said I should not bother about treatment, whether in India or America. They maintained that nothing could be done to remedy the situation. Doctors said I won't make it. We tried almost 10 hospitals in India. They all said we should not bother with treatment, that I won't make it. In their exact words, “She is already gone.” ““To the glory of God, that is how it has been. And for 11 years now, I have not taken any medication. Sadly, breast cancer is a big problem in Nigeria, its prevalence is now very high. There is no functional Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC) in the country, where cancer cases could be fully treated. A CCC is a world-class, stand-alone tertiary health institution, with all its departments focused on cancer care. Therefore, an average Nigerian can not afford breast cancer treatment in Nigeria. Those who can resort to treatment abroad.”Ethel got married to her lovely husband five years after her with battle with breast cancer. She is totally sold out to raising breast cancer awareness and education, as well as providing support to women and girls fighting breast cancer. She's the CEO and founder of Engraced Life Foundation; a non-profit organization that is mainly to educate, help and give hope to women who are diagnosed with breast cancer; enlightening them to accept treatment if and when diagnosed. In her private ventures, she is a communications trainer who brings her wealth of experience in blogging, lecturing and coaching to deliver communication services for individual and corporate clients. Her motto: Take action today to improve your skills because you cannot wish your communication problems away. Takeaways - Communication skills give you the opportunity to set yourself apart from the rest of the pack. If you are communicating better than others it means you are better understood, provide a clearer explanation and make it easy to follow your thought process. And this is the same for your Marketing Assignments, where a structured and coherent approach can pay dividends. - Lucille highlighted her three rules for effective communication which we can all learn from to become better communicators in anything we do. These are: - Consider your audience - Use simplicity, brevity and clarity (what Lucille calls the three beacons) - Timely and factual feedback - When communicating through writing always make sure you know and understand who your audience is and write accordingly. Again, this is the same with your Marketing Assignments. Make it easy to follow, edit and proof read while also not taking any chances with incoherent language and cryptic sentences, which brings us full circle and back to the three beacons of communication: Simplicity, Brevity and Clarity. Top Tip – 7 P’s - Process Efficiency, Structure, Usability, are just three of the words that spring to mind when you think about a process. And this is just the same within the extended Marketing Mix. The requirement of a process within this mix is vital for a number of reasons, not just the three key words we’ve just highlighted. Firstly, every process will have an impact on a customer, either directly or indirectly. A good tip here is to reverse engineer the process. Look at it from the customers perspective and work out what could be improved. Although these processes and systems need to be robust and effective, they still need a level of flexibility to deal with changes within a marketplace, supply chain or indeed cultural shift. And finally, involve others in creating and designing of any type of Marketing process as this improves communication internally, generates buy-in to any changes and helps to view the whole functionality from different perspectives so it work as well internally as well as it does externally. He is the producer of Nigeria's most popular educational animation series 'MUDI Goes To School' with over 2million weekly views, showing on 7 local and international TV channels including DSTV. Below is a summary of the interview Exploring The Business in Animation with Valentine Ubalua He mentioned that his interest in animation had come from his early Fascination in Information and Communication Technology, ICT. He recounted that his journey into the animation industry had been borne out of the learning disability, dyslexia, that he was faced with while growing up. He always found himself at the bottom of the class but could describe a cartoon show minutes after watching it on TV. On reaching the university, He took to converting his notes to audio-visuals, with graphical representations. This eventually saw him finish among the top of his class. He described the process of animation as a system of creating motion with different images or drawings while pointing out that animation was a very tasking job. He stated that they were different areas in animation and anyone could get into the industry if they had passion and time for it. He also discussed the dimensions in Animation such as 2D which are flat images and 3D which are 360 images in motion. Speaking on the process of making animation he said that it often started from a good story as compared to filmmaking leading to the animation which is at the last phase. He said there was the conceptualization stage, scripting, after which a storyboard artist does a rough sketch of each scene, then the animatics after which the clients approve the project. He said that animation could be tasking as the client sometimes may not approve a scene and that would mean starting the process all over again. Even to rendering the final output he said that two supercomputers were needed and this often took two days to complete, this he said all added to the cost of production. Even as the industry was still young as compared to other countries, he expressed his optimism saying that he believed that Africa would soon be the next destination for future animation productions. He went on to say that animation was a gold mine as it was the richest in the entertainment industry as the animation market was worth 404 billion dollars globally. He spoke further saying that animation productions lasted forever even as money could also be made from branding characters on valuable items and merchandising. He remarked also saying that animation was a lucrative business in Nigeria if one is good at it and is able to also show their works to the public so people can patronize them. He called on parents to help expose their children and equip them with digital skills. He also put in that interested persons could learn the process of animation from start to finish over the web or they could go over to any training institute. He lamented on the dearth of animators in the Nigerian Animation industry as they were not enough skilled hands. He also motioned on youths to acquire digital skills that would equip them and would also set them apart.

That is one of the factors that brought Peter Bamkole General Manager Enterprise Development Services at Lagos Business School to Wharton where he recently spent time with The Wharton Small Business Development Center exploring how to set up an entrepreneurship program in Nigeria.
