Indolent Systemic Mastocytosis (ISM) is a rare but often underrecognized clonal mast cell disorder. From random hives to gut pain and brain fog, ISM can feel like a medical mystery. We continue our review of “Management of indolent mastocytosis and mast cell activation syndrome - A clinical yardstick,” published in June 2025 in The Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. This is Part 2 of our discussion, with a focus on indolent systemic mastocytosis. We look at what causes it, how it's diagnosed, and how to manage symptoms and improve quality of life. In this episode, we break down this complex mast cell disease and how doctors use baseline serum tryptase, KIT D816V testing, and HaT screening to find answers. Plus, we explain how treatments like antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, and avapritinib can help people live better with ISM.

What happens when your body changes the rules halfway through your biggest athletic goal? Lucy Hurn found out when perimenopause hit during her 8-year quest to qualify for Kona. In this raw and practical episode, Lucy shares her journey from struggling with fatigue, irregular recovery, and changing physiology to finally earning her spot at the Ironman World Championships. This isn't just about getting faster — it's about adapting, listening to your body, and redefining what success looks like.   Key insights from this conversation: • Listen to your body becomes non-negotiable — especially when hormones make recovery unpredictable • Fuelling enough is harder than you think — why most female athletes under-eat and how it sabotages performance • Your thoughts aren't facts — learning to reframe negativity can transform your training and racing • The guilt factor — why women struggle more with training time and how to navigate family responsibilities   Practical takeaways for training through perimenopause: • Build flexibility into training plans — some days you adapt, some days you skip entirely • Prioritise protein at every meal (minimum 1g per kg bodyweight, building up from there) • Focus on what you can control: sleep hygiene, nutrition quality, stress management • Track your symptoms to understand patterns and communicate effectively with healthcare providers   Resources & Links: • Book recommendation: A Life Without Limits by Chrissie Wellington — Lucy's inspiration for her Kona goal • Research mentioned: Work by Dr. Natalie Brown on training around menstrual cycles and menopause - • Training philosophy: "You don't get fitter from training — you get fitter from recovery from training"   Connect with Lucy Hurn: Lucy is the owner of Feel Fit with Lucy and helps women achieve big race goals while building both fitness and confidence. Most of us define ourselves by the training plan, the race on the horizon, the number pinned to our chest. But what happens when that's gone — through injury, retirement, or just life getting in the way? In this episode, Simon and Beth dig into the messy subject of identity in sport: Are you still an athlete without an event to aim for? Is identity shaped by how we see ourselves, or how others see us? Why it's vital to build interests beyond swim, bike, run. Practical ways to navigate transitions and protect your sense of self. In this week's episode, Simon and Beth broadcast from Istanbul, fresh from Simon's attempt at the iconic Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim. Covering 6.5km from Asia to Europe, this unique race combines history, strategy, and a little bit of chaos. Beth puts Simon in the hot seat to find out what the experience was like, what really happened with the current, and how his Battle Ready approach allowed him to take it on without changing his regular training. They also look back at Simon's recent 218km gravel ride across Salisbury Plain, discussing how consistency, strength training, and sustainable routines can keep you prepared for big adventures—whether you've got three months' notice or just a week. What You'll Learn in This Episode The history and logistics of the Bosphorus Swim, including how to qualify and what makes it so different from a normal open-water race. Why navigation and currents are just as important as fitness on race day. The reality of swimming among thousands of jellyfish—and why they weren't as scary as expected. How Simon's regular three-times-a-week swim routine (plus strength and mobility) was enough preparation. Reflections from a 218km gravel ride: pacing, heat, cramp, and the importance of being “always ready.” Why Battle Ready training is less about huge training blocks and more about building a consistent lifestyle. In this episode, Simon and Beth explore one of the most common (and misunderstood) challenges in long-term endurance training: motivation. Why do some people train consistently, even without a race on the calendar, while others need the pressure of an event to get out the door? Is one approach better than the other? And how does motivation evolve as we age? With Beth firmly on Team Extrinsic and Simon on Team Intrinsic, this episode dives into a light-hearted but deeply useful discussion around how to stay consistent — especially when your goals change or life gets in the way.

Show notes (Why We Sleep book summary) / Free Full Audiobook / PDF & Infographic / IN THIS EPISODE: Sleep is a complex, essential biological process that significantly impacts physical health, mental function, and emotional regulation, and understanding and prioritizing it can dramatically improve overall human well-being. Read 1 million books in minutes. For free. Visit getstoryshots.com to get started. TOPICS: sleep, Circadian rhythm, health, Dreams, mental health, Neuroscience KEY FIGURES: Pixar, National Institutes of Health, NBA, Atomic Habits, World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Harvard Medical School, Why We Sleep, NFL, Matthew Walker, UC Berkeley, Deep Work, Einstein, StoryShots SUMMARY: Matthew Walker's book 'Why We Sleep' reveals a critical insight into the profound importance of sleep for human health, highlighting that most adults in developed nations fail to get the recommended eight hours of sleep. The book explains the complex biological mechanisms behind sleep, including the 24-hour circadian rhythm regulated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus and the buildup of adenosine that creates sleep pressure, demonstrating how these systems interact to govern our sleep-wake cycles. Walker emphasizes that sleep is not a passive state but a critical biological process with distinct stages-NREM and REM sleep-each serving unique functions for physical and mental restoration. During these stages, the body performs essential tasks like tissue repair, memory consolidation, emotional processing, and clearing toxic proteins from the brain. Sleep deprivation has severe consequences, including increased risks of chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, as well as significant impairments in cognitive function, emotional regulation, and mental health. The book also explores how modern society has created a 'sleep loss epidemic' through factors like artificial lighting, technology, work schedules, and cultural attitudes that devalue sleep. Walker provides practical strategies for improving sleep quality, such as maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a cool and dark sleeping environment, avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bedtime, and establishing a relaxing pre-sleep routine. By understanding and prioritizing sleep, individuals can dramatically improve their overall health, cognitive performance, and emotional well-being. KEY QUOTES: • "Sleeping less than six hours a night is a form of self-inflicted harm that damages every system in your body." - Matthew Walker • "Dreams are not the byproduct of sleep, but rather its purpose, nature's best attempt at emotional first aid." - Matthew Walker • "Our modern world is perfectly designed to disrupt sleep, creating the most sleep deprived era in human history." - Matthew Walker • "The amygdala, your brain's emotional center, becomes 60% more reactive without proper sleep, while the rational prefrontal cortex becomes less active." - Matthew Walker KEY TAKEAWAYS: • Sleep is essential for physical health, with chronic sleep deprivation dramatically increasing risks of serious conditions like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes • Sleep consists of different stages (NREM and REM), each serving unique functions for mental and physical restoration, including memory processing, emotional regulation, and tissue repair • Modern society has created a sleep loss epidemic through artificial lighting, technology, work schedules, and cultural attitudes that devalue sleep • Dreams during REM sleep are crucial for emotional processing, stress reduction, and enhancing creativity by forming unique connections between ideas • Sleep patterns naturally change throughout life stages, with significant variations in sleep needs and rhythms from infancy to old age • Lack of sleep impairs cognitive function, reducing concentration, memory, and decision-making abilities while increasing emotional reactivity... Episode 176: Creating Engaging Content Around Each Pillar!

Marketing 101 for Small Business Owners

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2025 6:18

Welcome back to the Empower Her Business Accelerator podcast! I'm your host, Philippa Channer, and we're continuing our April deep dive into content pillars. If you've been following along, we started by defining your content pillars in Episode 174, then aligning them with your business goals in Episode 175. If you haven't listened to those yet, I highly recommend going back to catch up—they really lay the groundwork for what we're diving into today. This week's focus is on something many business owners struggle with: how do you make your content around each pillar actually engaging? It's one thing to have a strategy—it's another to bring it to life in a way that connects with your audience, builds relationships, and inspires action. Creating content isn't just about showing up—it's about showing up meaningfully. Engagement is the difference between content that simply fills a feed and content that sticks in someone's mind, prompting them to think, respond, share, or even buy. And when your content resonates, it strengthens your brand, builds trust, and keeps people coming back. Let's walk through the key steps I shared in the episode for creating content that truly connects: (01:00) Why Engagement Matters in Content Engaging content isn't just fluff—it's foundational. When done well, it: Strengthens your brand by making it memorable. Drives action—clicks, shares, purchases—because people respond when they feel seen. Builds relationships by encouraging genuine connection and conversation. (02:00) Step 1: Understand Your Audience's Preferences Knowing what your audience likes helps your content get seen and heard. If your people love quick tips, give them reels or carousel posts. If they love depth, give them blogs and podcast episodes. ✨ Action Step: Dive into your analytics or ask your audience directly—figure out what formats they love most. (02:40) Step 2: Incorporate Storytelling Stories are where the magic happens. They make your message relatable and human. Whether it's a client win or your own entrepreneurial journey, storytelling transforms your content into connection. ✨ Action Step: Brainstorm stories or case studies for each content pillar—bring them to life with real voices and real impact. (03:30) Step 3: Add Value Through Education People come to you for insight, so deliver it! Teach them something useful, solve a pain point, or answer a question they're asking right now. ✨ Action Step: List out FAQs or struggles your audience has, and create content that tackles them head-on. (04:10) Step 4: Involve Your Audience Let your audience be part of the conversation. Ask for their input. Run a poll. Respond to comments. It's not about broadcasting—it's about relationship-building. ✨ Action Step: Start incorporating engagement prompts like questions, polls, or Q&A boxes into your content mix. (04:40) Step 5: Use Visuals and Multimedia People process visuals faster than text, so don't miss the opportunity to stand out. Infographics, carousels, short videos—they all boost attention and retention. ✨ Action Step: Explore easy tools like Canva or Adobe Express to create beautiful, branded visuals that match your message. (05:20) Step 6: Maintain a Consistent Voice Your brand voice is your personality in the digital world. Is it warm and empowering? Confident and bold? Whatever it is, make sure it's consistent across every touchpoint—social, email, in-person, everywhere. ✨ Action Step: Create a quick brand voice guide. Even just a page that lists tone, favorite phrases, and dos/don'ts will keep you grounded and consistent. As I shared in the episode, engaging content is about more than just publishing—it's about connecting. These strategies help ensure your content pillars don't just exist—they live and breathe in the hearts of your audience. Next week, we're wrapping up our April series by exploring how your content pillars can evolve as your audience grows and your business shifts. Trust me—you won't want to miss that one! Until then, keep shining, and remember: Engaging content is the key to turning your content pillars into meaningful connections. ✨ Special Announcements & Links

Where does your body end and the Earth begin? In this episode, we explore the real and poetic parallels between human health and planetary health, and how nature's language moves in our bodies. Joining me is Dr. Mackenzie Hall, a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Functional Medicine, who helps us trace the Earth's vital systems through the lens of humans as ecological systems. We ask:How could one imagine the Earth's vital organs as reflected in human anatomy? How does the Earth balance and health and detoxify, and how might this mirror how we work with our own bodies?  How does the body's energetic system hold, manage and deal with pathology? How do we listen for the Earth's pulse? How could this affect how we work as earth protectors and regenerators? This brings up a profound point: if we are to ensure the Earth's aliveness, we have to feel it as our own body. We Are, Marketing Happy - A Healthcare Marketing Podcast

In this episode, Jenny shares key insights from Hedy & Hopp's 2025 patient privacy research. Analyzing 254 provider and payor websites, the audit shows a decline in Google Analytics 4 usage, a rise in server-side tagging, and improved compliance as Universal Analytics is removed by many. However, risky practices persist, with 29.92% of sites still using at least one conversion tracking pixel and some relying on non-HIPAA-compliant form tools. Meanwhile, more organizations are exploring alternative analytics solutions, and a growing number of marketers are operating without any tracking at all.   Resources 2024's Patient Privacy Findings Podcast Episode: https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/wearemarketinghappy/episodes/By-The-Numbers-The-Current-State-of-Healthcare-Marketing-Tools-e2itnm7/a-ab770oe                Infographic: https://hedyandhopp.com/blog/2025-patient-privacy-findings/   Connect with Jenny: Email: jenny@hedyandhopp.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jennybristow/   If you enjoyed this episode we'd love to hear your feedback!
