Back in summer 2020, Giancarlo Granda, the former Fountainebleau Miami Beach pool boy at the center of a years-long sex scandal involving evangelical leader Jerry Falwell Jr. and Falwell's wife, Becki, contacted Miami filmmakers Billy Corben and Alfred Spellman to see if they'd be interested in telling his side of the story. "We thought it was a compelling opportunity to not only examine the hypocrisy of his illicit affair with the first family of evangelicalism, but some of the even greater macro issues," Corben tells New Times. "Specifically, the rise of the Falwell's dynasty, their outsized influence on presidential politics, and how religious hucksters went from televangelism to higher education to the White House."

Growing up in what appeared to be a retirement community in North Miami Beach, Alfred Spellman quickly realized Miami was more than meets the eye. After meeting Billy Corben in his 9th grade production class, the duo went on to be the youngest filmmakers ever to reach Sundance and then went on to start rakontur, a Miami-based documentary studio. Perfecting their craft of what they call ‘synthesis journalism', Rakontur has created a legacy of exploring the corruption and drug trade in the Magic City with their epic trilogy, Cocaine Cowboys. Alfred's anecdotes held us captivated as he detailed the decision to turn down a request from ESPN and how that turned into a Primetime slot for, The U. He told us about the film Broke and shared how that story might have been told differently had some reluctant athletes participated, but what really had us floored was the story about being an 8th grader in the back seat of a car and how that experience led to the idea for the Cocaine Cowboys Kings of Miami documentary. Yeah, Rakontur is the perfect name for the company because they are skilled storytellers.  The Producer, will have your full attention on this episode of Beyond the Lens presented by Diesel Films.

In 2000 they created their production company Rakontur and their first documentary, Raw Deal: A Question of Consent, premiered at the Sundance Festival in 2001. Since then, they’ve produced 537 Votes, Screwball, Magic City Hustle, Dawg Fight, Cocaine Cowboys, and ESPN’s 30 for 30: Broke, The U, and The U: Part 2. Rakontur’s films have tackled a diverse range of topics from sexual assault to college football to the Biogenesis doping scandal. Alfred’s not afraid to explore the sordid underbelly of society, and as a Miami native, he derives much of his inspiration from the real-life stories of crime, corruption, and hypocrisy that are rife in his hometown.
