Godfather Don... you know the name, or at least you should. Check the credits; the man born Rodney Chapman has worked with most of your favourites, including Kool Keith, Cormega and Screwball. His solo catalogue is exemplary, and his work on Hydra Entertainment is damn near mythical at this point. Veteran New York Emcee and Producer Godfather Don pulls up to the pod for a rare and exclusive interview. Don doesn't talk much, so we listened for the most part because nerdy details and unearthed gems were released at will. Before heading out with his saxophone to meet his jazz band for a session, Don opens up about Flatbush Hip-Hop history, how his writing style has evolved, and why he describes his creative process as "meat and potatoes". We also deep dive into the making of his brand new album Thesis (dropping on 30 August 2024!) and share some exclusive snippets from some of the album cuts - because we're connected like that.Respect to the HHV team for connecting the dots and creating an intricate plot.Pre-order the new Thesis album by Godfather Don at www.hhv.de: godfather-don.lnk.to/thesisAvailable in limited quantities on 4LP (incl. all instrumentals), 2LP (vocal tracks only), double cassette (incl. all instrumentals), 2CD (incl. all instrumentals) and digitally on all major platforms.Connect with Breaking AtomsInstagramFacebookTwitterFollow SumitInstagramTwitterFollow ChrisInstagramTwitter Hosted on Acast. Many directors fit certain categories of filmmaking ... when you think of films that focus on the little guy overcoming obstacles and beating corporations or banks or the rich ... well, you think of Frank Capra. Capra won three Academy Awards in 5 years and the last win is likely his least-known film for movie fans of today, You Can't Take It With You. This zany screwball comedy has a message and heart, but it also has wonderful performances by Jimmy Stewart, Jean Arthur, and especially Lionel Barrymore. However, is that enough to have film critic Jack Ferdman give it his Rewatching Oscar of 1938? The late week news was so screwball that Steve surrendered to Screwball Peanut Butter Whiskey to cope while Lucretia the Lightweight settled for Irish coffee while John, out of place as usual, passed on a liquid lunch to have a real one. (By the way, the Screwball Peanut Butter Whiskey is not recommended.)And what a lot of screwball news, starting with the designation of a DoJ special counsel to deal with Hunter Biden's special needs, a trial date and mini-gag order for Trump, and the flurry over the proposal of two conservative law professors to ban Trump's eligility for the ballot under Section III of the 14th Amendment about "insurrection." (If you are a glutton for the punishment of a 126-page law review article, you can view the whole thing here.) There's just one problem with this scenario: Trump hasn't been charged with fomenting insurrection or rebellion. Maybe the special counsel is waiting for another bad news dump on Hunter? After some observations about the failed Ohio referendum this week we finallky getr down to some wider topics, including reflections on the astonishing interview last week with Obama biographer David Garrow in The Tablet, which presents about as unflattering a portrait of "the lightworker" as can be imagined. (If you haven't read the Garrow interview, do so at your earliest convenience.) And we also ponder the latest notable offerings on the state of the country from Victor Davis Hanson ("Who Will Say No to the Current Madness") and Jacob Howland ("America Is Now a Zombie State"). Steve, naturally, sees some signs of life while Lucretia, naturally, finds him to be too infernally optimistic. Finally, a few suggestions for great general reading about politics, with Steve recommending a title from Kenneth Minogue and John recommending two titles from Daniel Bell. Lucretia is sticking with Calvin and Hobbes—the comic strip, not the 16th and 17th century authors!

On Episode 123, we're finishing up our NYC Air Play series but this time giving you the college radio version. Last episode we had plenty of G-Unit, Dipset, D-Block, Terror Squad and The Roc, but this episode we're giving you Non Phixion, Screwball, Wee Bee Foolish, D.I.T.C., Juggaknots, Bumpy Knuckles, El-P and J-Live to provide the perfect balance NYC had to offer in the 2000's. Unfortunately, Trugoy passed away during the recording of this episode and if you've been a long-time listener of Take It Personal, you know just how much De La Soul means to us. David Jolicoeur was an amazing lyricist and responsible for so many great moments in hip-hop, so needless to say we're back in the lab working on a very necessary tribute to him. Enjoy episode 123 and stay tuned prepare to drop our next episode where we pay respects to Plug 2. www.takeitpersonalradio.com Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonal Online store: https://take-it-personal.creator-spring.com/ (enter Win25 for 25% off) Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal
On Episode 122 we're going back to NYC circa 2000-2005, where mix show radio dominated the airwaves. Where clan's, posse's, crew's and clik's peaked with G-Unit, Dipset, D-Block, Terror Squad, Ruff Ryders, Murder Inc and The Roc. This was fresh-off the Nas and Jay-Z battle, when NYC was thriving again and when a kid named Justin Smith completely changed the game. Justin Smith aka Just Blaze went on to produce more hit records than any other hip-hop producer during this time. I can't stress this enough, but before there was Kanye West, there was Just Blaze. There also was no bigger artist than 50 Cent. He wasn't just big in music, he was internally known with every major corporation for his undeniable charisma, street anthems and fashion. And speaking of fashion, remember the oversized white tees? How about Mitchell & Ness jerseys? You also had to have a fresh pair of Tims and white Air Force 1's. Who could forget those gaudy Canal Street watches we wanted to pass-off as Jacobs? We may have lacked self-awareness in fashion but we definitely can acknowledge the incredible music to come out of this era. Whether you bumped Hot 97, Kiss or Power or downloaded joints off Napster, Limewire or Kazaa, you knew special this time was. We gotta thank to Nas, Jadakiss, Killa Cam, 50, Mobb Deep, Jay-Z, Ghostface, Fabulous, Black Rob, M.O.P., Ja, Styles P and Fat Joe for giving NYC back their sound. This show is a homage NYC mix show and because we're always trying to find a balance like Atmosphere, our next episode we're giving you our college radio edition. Think of Non Phixion, D.I.T.C., Freddie Foxxx, Screwball, Wee Bee Foolish, El-P and J-Live. Think Fat Beats, A-1 and Turntable Lab. Think of the joints you copped off Sandboxautomatic and HipHopSite. Think of the message board era of Okayplayer, HipHopInfinity, UGHH and the best of all, the Philaflava forums. We are going to give you the ultimate yin and yang that NYC hip-hop had to offer during these great times. In the mold of Adrian Warburton, one George Beurling comes to Malta in July. Like Warby, George or Screwball as he is called, does not care for much for anything really, only flying and fighting. And in a short time, he will cause hell for the Axis pilots. However, Kesselring has ordered Fliegerkorps II to be given more pilots. The overwhelming air attacks on Malta are gearing up again. But this time, it will be Vice Air Marshall Keith Park leading the defense of Malta. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
