Republicans and their cheering fans in Con Inc. media are a bunch of listless vessels with no ideological direction on most issues. The one shining exception is the gun rights movement. We're joined today by Luis Valdes, national spokesman for Gun Owners of America, for a presentation on where things stand with gun rights both federally and in the states. Valdes celebrates numerous policy and legal successes of GOA, but also warns that there is more to be done. The gaping hole in gun rights is the gun-free zones. As a Floridian, he discusses the lessons of the FSU campus shooter and how RINOs in Florida support gun control without campaigning on it. Also, as a former police officer, Valdes is passionate about the need to treat civilians and police equally. He confronts some of the arguments from police organizations in support of various gun control laws. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
GOP Florida Senate President Kathleen Passidomo refuses to advance the House-passed bill rolling back earlier gun restrictions, which would allow 18-year-olds to purchase firearms. Luis Valdes from Gun Owners of America returns for 2A Tuesday on the Marc Cox Morning Show, calling out the government's failure to address mental illness while scapegoating guns. Valdes and Marc agree that America doesn't have a gun problem—it has a mental health crisis. They highlight high-profile tragedies like Parkland and Covenant School as examples of failures in the system, not in the Second Amendment. Valdes slams red flag laws as ineffective and unconstitutional, calling for serious reform in mental health care. Plus, he tears into the Biden administration's ongoing attempt to reclassify pistols as short-barreled rifles, despite legal precedent and court rulings against the ATF's brace ban.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Sofía Valdés over Zoom video!Acclaimed Panamanian singer-songwriter Sofía Valdés unveils her anxiously awaited self-titled debut album, Sofía Valdés, out now via Warner Records. In bringing the 10-track album to life, Sofía worked extensively with producers Michael Uzowuru (known for his work on groundbreaking albums like Rosalía's Motomami and SZA's Ctrl), Alex Goose (Vince Staples, Childish Gambino) and Carter Lang (SZA, Lykke Li), as well as in-demand musicians like Local Natives guitarist Ryan Hahn and Diana Gordon. From the epic “Tacones Por La Puerta” featuring cinematic strings from acclaimed Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai to the guitar-driven funk of “Already Yours” and the tender plea on “Un Momento,” the album affirms Sofía as a bold and eloquent songwriter inspired by her family's deep, multi-generational connection to music. She paved the way for the album's arrival with fan favorite collaborations with Latin sensations DannyLux on “Lento” and Cuco on “How's That Working Out,” which earned widespread critical praise, including Rolling Stone who hailed its “modern bossa nova blend of jangly guitar and sleek beats perfect for late summer,” and Ones To Watch who called it “a collab of indie Latino royalty."Her catalog to date — including her previous EPs Silvia, In Bloom, and Ventura — has received a long list of critical acclaim from the likes of NPR, W Magazine, Interview Magazine, NYLON, and many more for her beautifully original blend of bossa nova, folk, and pop.ABOUT SOFÍA VALDÉS Sofia Valdes, a singer/songwriter born and bred in Panama, creates the kind of emo onally honest and beautifully original pop music that could only come from years of exploration. After learning to play guitar at the age of eight and writing her first song at 13, the independent-minded artist sharpened her craft in part by building an eclectic sonic vocabulary informed by everything from folk and bossa nova to '60s Motown and '70s soul. Valdes alchemizes those inspira ons into a sound all her own, gracing each track with her indelible songwriting and beguiling voice. With its transcendent melodies and shapeshifting rhythms, Ventura is an elegant introduction the vibrant musicality that may very well be in Valdes's blood: her great-grandfather was the legendary Cuban musician Miguelito Valdes, and her great-great grandmother was Silvia De Grasse (a Panamanian singer who once performed with Louis Armstrong). Seattle adds some much-needed depth
Republicans have yet to file a promised open carry bill for the upcoming Florida Legislative Session, and Gun Owners of America's Louis Valdes outlines what's behind several upcoming moves with regard to Second Amendment issues.

I began the Pullin from the Stacks podcast just over 10 years ago, publishing my first episode on October 19, 2014. The name is from the classic Digable Planets cut "Pacifics," a song which has a lot of meaning to me. I think I actually messed up and called it "Pullin from the Crates" for that first episode. The first record I played was a cover of Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" by the Jazz Piano Quartet. The first record I play on this episode is a different "Maiden Voyage" cover, this time by the Dalton Jazz Ensemble, a school band record I found at Recollect Records in Denver years ago. One of my favorite songs, I still search out any version I can. The next record is the first record I ever put on my Discogs "want list," Michael Sardaby's "Gail," after hearing a soundclip on Youtube one day. Even back then it was going for more money than I'd ever spent on a piece of wax. A few years later, I sold my old copy of Eminem's first 12" for a couple hundred, and immediately went to see if there were any copies of "Gail" available at the same price - and there were! I feel so lucky to have snagged one. The next record is from one of my favorite jazz compilations, this one out of Hungary in the early 70s. I highly recommend it, the whole record is gorgeous, it's called "Modern Jazz Anthology X" and folks are sleeping on it! Staying in the same part of the world, I was introduced to Romanian jazz legend Johnny Cretu Raducanu after hearing a few Electrecord releases he had played on. The cover of this 10" and his own cover of Charles Mingus's "Haitian Fight Song" drove me to track down a copy online. The whole record is stunning. Speaking of stunning it is hard to find words to describe the beauty of this masterpiece by Winston Mankunku Ngozi, often referred to as South Africa's John Coltrane. It is a desert island record. The following tune, from the Roy Haynes Trio, is one I heard on Karriem Riggins masterful mix, "Music Kaleidoscope," and had to track down. I found it one weekend in a super random record store deep in Long Island. The Chucho Valdes represents my love of Cuban jazz; while I didn't find this record during my time in Havana, I did get hip to Mr. Valdes and months afterword dug this out of a crate on the floor under a table at the WMFU record fair. The Milton Banana cut I play here is from the first record of his I bought, I think at Human Head back in the day. He's killing it on the drums!! I don't remember when I first heard this RF 45 - maybe Junior played it? - but it's a gem, had to track one down. And Green Caterpillar man...I first heard this when Rev Shines played it YEARS ago on KBOO during Jumbo's "Beat Jeopardy" show. I remember being like "wtf is this?!?!?" - took many years to find a copy. I bought this off a dude in Colorado on Amazon.com in like 2015 for about $80. Clean. No regrets on that. The Soul Surfers cut here is just crazy to me, I think someone posted it on IG and I took notice. And finally, this beautiful cover of Kendrick Lamar by my guy Sly 5th Ave released by my people DJ Center and Footlong Development is a stone cold classic. I can't count all the DJ gigs I end with this 45 or all the people coming up to the turntables to see what it is. This is not the end of the podcast. There will be more episodes, though probably less often, as has been the case for much of 2024. Hoping to get back on a schedule of 1-2 episodes a month, possibly with some special guests. Speaking of guests, I want to thank everyone who's contributed a guest set these past ten years! Alex Stange, DO77, Duiji Mshinda, John Morrison, DJ Center, J. Rawls, Bruce Phillips, Evolve-One, LateBloomer and dflush, Daniel Littlewood, the DadBodRapPod, and Waffles Hidalgo. Much respect! And the biggest thank you goes out to everyone who's tuned in once or a hundred times, downloaded, subscribed, told their friends, or talked shit. It's all appreciated.
Last week, Hurricane Oscar devastated the Cuban island destroying over 1000 homes and directly killing at least six people. As a result of the natural disaster, millions of people are still without power and bread rations have been reduced to the size of a bar of soap. Cuba has repeatedly appealed to the international community, and especially the United States to lift the embargo which has strangled the government's capacity to trade in the international arena and by extension provide stability for its citizens. Yesterday, October 27th, activists gathered at Grand Central to demand that the U.S. Let's Cuba Live! In road to the UN General Assembly vote to end the blockade against Cuba. With us now we have Danny Valdes, Co-Chair DSA's Cuba Solidarity Working Group to discuss how U.S. policy is contributing to the disaster in Cuba.
29. oktobrī Gruzijas Centrālā vēlēšanu komisija paziņoja, ka organizēs balsu pārskaitīšanu pēc nejaušības principa izraudzītos vēlēšanu iecirkņos – pa pieciem katrā no astoņdesmit četriem vēlēšanu apgabaliem. Welcome to another episode of Category Visionaries — the show that explores GTM stories from tech's most innovative B2B founders. In today's episode, we're speaking with Kristen Valdes, CEO & Founder of B.well, a digital health platform that's raised over $100 Million in funding. Here are the most interesting points from our conversation: The Founding Story: Kristen's personal healthcare struggle with her daughter, who suffered a near-fatal incident due to fragmented medical records, inspired her to build B.well. This experience exposed how broken the system was for consumers, leading her to create a platform that empowers families with tools to manage their own healthcare. System Design Flaws: Kristen believes the healthcare system isn't "broken" but designed poorly, prioritizing "sick care" over preventative, holistic health. She emphasizes that the system operates as intended, driven by fee-for-service payments, which incentivizes more procedures rather than better outcomes. Value-Based Care: Transitioning to value-based care is critical for improving healthcare outcomes, but it's a slow and challenging process. Kristen estimates it could take another 10-15 years before value-based models dominate. Providers and hospitals need to trust the transition before they fully commit to abandoning fee-for-service models. Consumer Experience Platforms: B.well is a "consumer health experience platform" that focuses on solving the fragmentation of healthcare data. The platform allows users to manage their medical records, receive personalized health insights, and access care across different providers—all through a single mobile interface. Fragmentation and Transparency: Kristen emphasizes that the real challenge in healthcare today is the fragmentation of data. B.well has worked on government initiatives aimed at increasing transparency, from medical records to pricing, in order to drive more innovation and competition in healthcare. Marketing and Category Creation: Kristen shared insights into B.well's journey in creating a new category—Healthcare Consumer Experience Platforms. Despite the long and difficult process, persistence, thought leadership, and industry collaboration helped B.well succeed in defining this space and gaining analyst recognition from Forrester and Gartner. // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co

Yvette Valdes-Smith knows firsthand how spiraling housing costs have made Beacon unaffordable to many. Yvette and her husband rented in Beacon for years, but moved to Fishkill when they realized they couldn't afford to buy a home here. “We shouldn't have to struggle with paying our utility bills, our rent and our mortgages,” she says in our interview. “Affordability is critical to me and to pretty much every voter I've spoken to. And housing is a huge issue. It's going to require us not being NIMBY about things. We have to increase housing stock.” Raised in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico, Yvette went to college in New York, became a public school teacher and started a family before winning a seat on the Dutchess County Legislature, where she is Minority Leader. Now she's running for NY State Senate District 39 on the Democratic ticket. In addition to housing affordability, her campaign is focused on issues like abortion rights, gender-affirming care, gun safety and youth services. “We need more youth services,” she says. “I'm a mom. I've experienced the lack of childcare in this county. I've experienced youth programs closing or not being available. Think about summer camps, how they'll go online and they'll be gone in three seconds.” But winning won't be easy. The current State Senator in the seat she's running for, Republican Rob Rolison, is a seasoned pol who won the spot by about 7,000 votes two years ago. In this episode, she talks about what it will take to beat him – including lots and lots of canvassing in purple and red areas of the district. Senate District encompasses Beacon along with parts of Putnam, Dutchess and Orange counties.

She even designed Maria Cole's gown for her wedding to Nat King Cole in 1948.Zelda continued her impactful career until her passing in 2001, contributing to over 80 ballet productions at the Dance Theatre of Harlem. She made it her mission to leave the door wide open for all the black women designers following in her footsteps.
