Two corrections: The pronunciation of Beaulieu is closer to "B-you-ly" or BYOO-lee. In the episode, I mention that the age of consent was 16. That was the age of consent for heterosexuals only. Homosexuality was illegal across all ages until a minor reform in 1967. The Sexual Offences Act 1967 legalized homosexual acts between two men over 21 in private. This did not apply to the armed forces or the merchant navy. Lesbian acts were never criminalized, so there was no legal age of consent.  In the spring of 1953, four men, including a British lord and two RAF officers, would become the focus of a national homosexual sex scandal—one that would destroy reputations, shock the country, and ultimately help change the law. From the moment I read about this scandal many years ago, I was fascinated. As an American, I have to confess, I cannot fully understand the British class situation. It seems that Lord Montagu's penchant for surrounding himself with "commoners" seemed to alarm those in his social strata to such a degree that open season was declared on him and any of the lower orders around him. Montagu and Peter Wildeblood were from similar backgrounds, but when Wildeblood and his RAF boyfriend spent the weekend at Montague's estate, the event presented the perfect opportunity to come down hard on Montagu.  The result was something of a show trial with a preordained conclusion. That level of invasion of privacy led to a change in the law.

Back when the world only had 3 TV channels (OK, and cable), late night television was the edgy cultural playground of intellectuals and night owls and people who just needed to watch something at midnight.  David Letterman was one of the top, and sometimes the top, late night host.  Known for his quick wit and dry delivery, his show was popular for decades. But David was sleeping with his staff and some employees didn't appreciate working for the boss's continual parade of girlfriends.  David's behavior made him a prime target for blackmail - and boy was he blackmailed.  Rather than give in, David had the blackmailer arrested and issued an on air apology to the viewing audience for his behavior. This happened about 10 years prior to the #MeToo movement so his career was largely untouched by the scandal, but his personal life was wrecked.  He's been on a years long journey making amends to some female staff for his behavior and we're here to tell the story and evaluate the sorry!

This scandal was revealed when the United States Navy conducted an investigation in 1919 in which they were looking into the gross and deceptive tactics ordered upon a group of Navy personnel to impersonate gay men in order to catch gay men…being gay men, something that was illegal at this time in history. Fifteen members of the Navy would end up being arrested in Newport, Rhode Island, as a result of their “scandalous conduct”. Of particular importance is the fact that the Assistant Secretary of the Navy during this scandal, who would resign during the course of this investigation so that he could – oh, I don't know, accept the nomination for Vice President of the United States – was none other than Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1987, Gary Hart was a young charismatic Democrat, poised to win his party's nomination and possibly the presidency. Many of us know the story of what happened next, and even if you don't, it's a familiar tale. Back in 2016, we examined how, when this happened, politicians and political reporters found themselves in uncharted territory.
