Former President Trump faces the third day of his hush money payment trial in a Manhattan courthouse. The day kicked off with seven confirmed jurors, but two were dismissed later in the morning. Are Trump's chances doomed by a rigged jury? New York police intervened to remove anti-Israel protesters from Columbia University's campus in New York City today. Demonstrating students had set up an encampment on a campus lawn, demanding the university divest from companies with ties to Israel. Meanwhile, Columbia University president Minouche Shafik testified on Capitol Hill regarding anti-Semitism on the campus yesterday. Speaker Mike Johnson has stirred controversy by pushing a bill without a deal, strategy, or path forward for our country's border security. The bill proposes sending nearly 100 billion taxpayer dollars to Ukraine and Israel, leaving many questioning his priorities. Molly Ringwald, famous for her roles in iconic 80s films like "Pretty in Pink" and "Sixteen Candles," discussed the need for a more diverse cast in modern-era remakes during a Q&A session with Variety magazine at the Miami Film Festival. The film, written by Jon Garcia and Zach Carter and directed by Garcia, premiered to rave reviews at the Miami Film Festival with outlets calling the film “captivating” (Film Factual), saying it “revels in its atmosphere and it is thick with paranoia" (Reel Reviews); further, Blair Witch Project producer Greg Hale says of the film, "STS is a great addition to the sub-sub-genre of Bigfoot horror. The film turns convention on its head with a fresh take on Sasquatch while still delivering on the fun and the scares." SUMMONING THE SPIRIT follows Carla (Krystal Millie Valdes) and Dean (Ernesto Reyes) as they decide to escape the hustle of the big city, purchasing a home in the remote forest. They have big plans for their new quiet life, only to find something much more sinister. The couple quickly realize that they are on the land of a cult, and the leader claims a telepathic connection to a legendary flesh-eating beast deep in the woods surrounding them. Carla and Dean are forced to uncover the terrifying truth of the cult's prophecy. ● Media Inquiries: October Coast PR www.octobercoastpr.com

In 2019 I was invited to a movie premiere for Vandal at "Miami Film Festival" at the Tower theater in Little Havana Miami FL. A movie about the gritty Miami street art scene and the dark side of the city. I absolutely loved the movie and felt connected to it so I really enjoyed attending. I was able to speak with lead actor Daniel Zovatto plays (Nick 'Damage' Cruz), Frankie J. Alvarez plays (Chino) & Richard Schiff plays (Jacob Lipman). I made the a "Mini Episode" since it is so short, but so fun ENJOY! This is Come Art Me Bro! Credit: Vandal Vandal is the story of Nick Cruz, also known as “Damage,” a young, highly talented graffiti writer and artist, struggling to justify the world of illegal graffiti as he experiences loss, love and the consequences he created for himself. Set against the back drop of the world famous Wynwood Arts District in Miami, the film explores the personal and societal struggles of an extremely talented underground graffiti writer living by a code that is no longer justifiable in the new world of globalized graffiti/street art. Vandal, inspired by true stories, was shot on location in Miami's Wynwood, Little Havana, and Little Haiti neighborhoods, highlighting Miami's gritty streets as well as its multi-cultural heritage.

A Cachao, Andy García. A Bebo, Paquito D’Rivera. A Cachao, Andy García. A Bebo, Paquito D’Rivera. The 2019 documentary Pahokee is a landmark project for filmmakers Ivete Lucas and Patrick Bresnan and a sign of hope for the rural South Florida community whose story they tell. An official selection in 2019 Sundance and South by Southwest Film Festivals, Pahokee won the Miami Film Festival’s 2019 Knight Made in Miami Award. Perched on the Southeastern shore of Lake Okeechobee in the Everglades, forty miles west and a world apart from affluent West Palm Beach, Pahokee is named after the Seminole word meaning "grassy waters.” In the film, we follow four students as they navigate the hope and heartbreak of their senior year at Pahokee High School. All eyes are on the rituals of football, prom and graduation in the town these teenagers call home. In 1999 Aaron Baker broke his neck in a motocross accident, leaving him completely paralyzed from the neck down. Despite doctor's grim prognosis, over the next 16 years Aaron decided not to listen to those who said 'he had a million-to-one odds of ever feeding himself again' and instead, through painstaking effort, endeavored to regain as much mobility as possible. This journey through the unknown took him from the depths of depression to the joys of cross country road tripping via tandem bicycle with his mother and friends, and finally, culminating in his opening a socially conscious low-cost gym focused on increasing mobility for the disabled. Now, in COMING TO MY SENSES, we watch as Aaron takes one final journey which symbolizes his recovery: crossing a 20-mile tract of Death Valley unsupported on foot. But will he make it? COMING TO MY SENSES will be available on EST platforms May 15, with VOD on May 22 . The feature length documentary won the Audience award at the Austin Film Festival and Best Documentary at Red Rock Film Festival, has played at the Miami Film Festival, Mammoth Film Festival, and will screen at the Newport Beach Film Festival later this month. Directed by Dominic Gill and produced by Nadia Gill, editing is by Dominic Gill and Nick Andert. Julian Cautherley executive produces and original music is by Cody Westheimer. COMING TO MY SENSES is distributed by The Orchard. For more information on the film visit http://www.tomysenses.com/

Today, we invite three women writers to talk about Cuba as a character in newly released films. Our portal to the Cuban psyche is the 35th Miami Film Festival that brings diverse cultural perspectives to the big screen in theaters across Miami, Florida. Sharing their expertise and personal knowledge of Cuba's socio-political landscape are two sisters born in Miami, to Cuban parents: writer and filmmaker Carmen Peláez and food writer Ana Sofia Peláez. New York based journalist and filmmaker Michelle Memran joins us to remember her own encounters with the culture while making a documentary film with Cuban American playwright María Irene Fornés. In this conversation, we consider the value of creativity, resilience, family and friendship in Cuba. The country’s historic relationship and chaotic rupture with the Soviet Union is the backdrop for the three stories we introduce. (The 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall and collapse of the Soviet Union catapulted Cuba into a life-changing economic crisis from which Cubans around the world are still recovering.) The films: Cuban Food Stories, director Asori Soto; The Rest I Make Up, director Michelle Memran; and Sergio and Sergai, director Ernesto Daranas.   Sound Editor: Anamnesis Audio | Featured Sound Tracks courtesy of Miami Film Festival:  Cuban Food Stories, The Rest I Make Up, Sergio and Sergai

Miami-based curators Marie Vickles, Edouard Duval-Carrié and Tosha Grantham (with family ties to Greece and Africa, Haiti, Asia and America, respectively) talk about connecting cultural history to contemporary art in exhibitions at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex and share what sparked Visionary Aponte: Art & Black Freedom, the traveling exhibition that recently premiered in Miami. Cuban-born Lissette Mendez and Carl Juste share some of the stories behind the collective exhibition and book project Havana, Haiti and the annual Little Haiti Book Festival.

In this episode, Fariha and Kiva use the “Muslim ban” put in place by U.S. President Trump as a jumping-off point to highlight some of the exceptional filmmakers working in the seven countries affected by the Executive Order. They discuss Iraqi filmmaker Hussein Hassan’s decision not to bring his documentary THE DARK WIND to the Miami Film Festival because of the ban. Asghar Farhadi, similarly, opted not to attend the Academy Awards despite the Best Foreign Language Film nomination for THE SALESMAN. They discuss the importance of being an ally to these filmmakers, and the role that programming and criticism can play. Not to mention the importance of simply seeing these films, and telling your friends to see them too. Film is powerful at a moment like this, Fariha and Kiva believe, because of the humanizing effect of experiencing stories about real people's lives from regions which are often considered by the news media solely in terms of politics or conflict. Listen in to find out about some filmmakers to watch from these seven countries: Iran: Asghar Farhadi, THE SALESMAN, A SEPARATION (and a shout out to actor Golshifteh Farahani) Iraq: Mohamed Al-Daradji, SON OF BABYLON Atia Al Daradji and Mohamed Al-Daradji, IN MY MOTHER’S ARMS Somalia: Fathia Absie, BROKEN DREAMS Sudan: Atak Ngor, ATAK’S FILM Libya: Various Directors, LIBYA IN MOTION Yemen: Sara Ishaq, KARAMA HAS NO WALLS, THE MULBERRY HOUSE Syria: Diana El Jeiroudi, DOLLS: A WOMAN FROM DAMASCUS Further reading: Kerry James Marshall is expanding the canon with his latest show at the Met: http://theartnewspaper.com/news/museums/kerry-james-marshall-makes-his-picks-from-the-met-s-collection/ At the Miami Film Festival, Hussein Hassan protested the ban by cancelling his visa application: http://www.indiewire.com/2017/01/iraq-filmmaker-protests-trump-muslim-ban-withdraws-visa-application-miami-film-festival-1201774530/ If you are in Toronto, check out Hot Docs’ Ban This Series, a free screening series of documentaries from the banned countries: http://www.hotdocscinema.ca/responsive/content/ban_this_series
