This week, Ana Marie Cox (@anamariecox) sits down with human rights lawyer, activist, and author Arjun Sethi (@arjunsethi81) to discuss the one year anniversary of his book, American Hate: Survivors Speak Out —as relevant as ever after the massacres in El Paso… and, in the short time since, the arrests of six white men on charges related to mass violence. Arjun and Ana also discuss their frustration with how hate crimes are typically depicted in the media, and how the average American can get involved in the fight against white supremacy. Then, Ibram X. Kendi (@DrIbram) from The Atlantic discusses his bestelling new book, How to Be an Antiracist. In soft-spoken, gentle urgency, Ibram guides us through the idea “there is no neutrality” in the face of racism: there is only racism and anti-racism. Ibram and Ana then discuss his various encounters with cancer; exploring a profound extended metaphor between the disease and racism in America. On Tuesday, the FBI revealed that hate crimes in the U.S. rose 17 percent in 2017, the third consecutive year that figure has gone up. The report cites 7,175 hate crimes for the year, yet according to Arjun Singh Sethi, author of “American Hate: Survivors Speak Out,” considering the tendency of state and federal agencies to underreport such incidents, the number is most likely much higher. On this week's TrumpWatch, Arjun looks at the role President Trump has played in the spike in hate violence observed in this country since his rise to power and considers what can be done to reverse this disturbing trend.

My guest is Arjun Sethi. In his new book American Hate: Survivors Speak Out (https://www.amazon.com/American-Hate-Survivors-Speak-Out/dp/1620973715), he chronicles the stories of individuals affected by hate. He works closely with Muslim, Arab, South Asian, and Sikh communities and advocates for racial justice, equity, and social change at both the local and the national levels. Arjun Singh Sethi (@arjunsethi81), author of American Hate: Survivors Speak Out, joined Ana (@anamariecox) on this week’s pod. Over the course of their conversation, Arjun explained why he wrote the book: to center the perspectives of hate survivors, who live with the everyday hate not just of Trump’s America, but that -- shocker -- has always been present in American life. He and Ana talked about the general erasure of hate survivors in no less a setting that prosecution of hate crimes, and why hate crime legislation, restorative justice, and listening to survivors is so important in the first place. Their conversation also touched on the role social media does, and should, play in tackling hate. Lastly, they talked about how Arjun’s two German Shepherds help him continue to do this work, and the most important thing he learned through this project. You can find Arjun’s book here. A clip from Taylor Dumpson’s TED Talk is included in the show’s intro. If you’re interested in the full version, you can find it here. Arjun referenced an SPLC report.
