Michael Hingson was hosting a training session in his offices on the 78th floor of the World Trade Center's North Tower on the morning of September 11, 2001. As he reached for some paper, Hingson felt and heard a muffled explosion and the tower bent drastically before snapping back into place.Of course, it was American Airlines Flight 11 crashing into the tower - the first of four planes hijacked by Al Qaeda terrorists as part of the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history.Hingson was born blind but knew every inch of his office and the North Tower. Soon he, his guide dog, a colleague, and everyone else in their office began the long descent to the ground floor. In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Hingson explains why he was so meticulously prepared for an emergency, how he quickly got a clue abut the cause of the explosion as soon as he entered the stairwell, and what it was like going down 78 floors with countless other people as the firefighters started to make their way up the stairs.Hingson also shares escaping from the World Trade Center only to discover the South Tower was also on fire and what it was like getting caught in the dust storms from both towers collapsing to the ground near him. Finally, Hingson details the fantastic performance of his guide dog, Roselle, that day and how his experience and Roselle's actions actually led to a career change as an author and public speaker.

As America approaches the 25th anniversary of September 11, retired NYPD Detective Sergeant Mike Codella joins Tudor Dixon to share his extraordinary firsthand account of surviving the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Codella was off duty when the first plane struck, but after realizing America was under attack, he raced to Lower Manhattan and ran into the South Tower to help evacuate people. Moments later, the building began to collapse around him. Codella recalls being thrown by the force of the collapse, waking up surrounded by complete darkness and silence, and eventually finding his way to safety. He also remembers returning home that night to discover his family believed he had died at Ground Zero—and reflects on the remarkable unity, courage, and patriotism Americans showed in the days after 9/11. Tudor and Codella discuss why younger generations must be taught what happened on September 11, the importance of remembering the first responders and ordinary Americans who became heroes, and whether America has forgotten some of the lessons learned after the attacks. They also examine Codella's decades fighting crime in New York City, Rudy Giuliani's approach to policing, the consequences of soft-on-crime policies, and Codella's upcoming book, The Evil That Walked New York, which explores some of the darkest criminal cases and mysteries he encountered during his career.Never forget September 11, 2001—and never stop telling the stories of the people who lived it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Former CIA intelligence analyst and targeter Sarah Adams joins Tudor Dixon for a warning about foreign influence operations targeting American politics and elections. Adams breaks down what she describes as the growing alliance between Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Islamist political organizations, and political candidates—and explains why Americans should pay closer attention to the organizations, money, and influence networks operating behind campaigns. Tudor and Sarah examine concerns surrounding Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, the Muslim Brotherhood, CAIR Action, campus organizations, and the role social media influencers can play in amplifying foreign-backed narratives—sometimes without even realizing where the messaging originated. They also explore why Adams believes the threat isn't limited to the political left. Could similar influence operations fracture Republicans and conservatives by pushing voters toward third parties or convincing them to stay home? Plus, Adams reveals a stunning vulnerability inside Washington: congressional staffers aren't universally required to undergo background checks. She explains what she witnessed while working on Capitol Hill and why she believes Congress needs stronger counterintelligence safeguards. It's a wide-ranging conversation about foreign influence, election interference, political extremism, national security, and whether Americans recognize the threat before it becomes too powerful to ignore.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Luigi Mangione told a federal judge on August 14 that he killed Brian Thompson. He said he shot the UnitedHealthcare CEO in Manhattan and knew it was illegal. The conviction that followed was for stalking — not murder.Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer joins Tony Brueski to cover the plea and the strategy it appears to be built on.The federal murder charge was dismissed months before the hearing. Terrorism charges were thrown out when a judge found the evidence legally insufficient. What remained were two stalking counts carrying a maximum sentence of life in prison. Mangione pleaded guilty to both without a deal.He described for the court how he identified the location of the UnitedHealthcare investor conference by posing as a financial manager overseeing more than fifty billion dollars. The company gave him the address within an hour of his email. He traveled to New York, arrived ahead of Thompson, and waited.Mangione's defense team filed a double jeopardy motion to block the state murder case before he was back in his cell. The state trial had been scheduled for September jury selection. His attorneys asked for this federal hearing three days before it.Sentencing is set for December 18. The guidelines recommend twenty-four to thirty years. Mangione is twenty-eight, which means the low end would put his release in his early fifties. Prosecutors have publicly stated they are seeking life.Coffindaffer breaks down what the timing reveals about legal strategy, what the level of preoperational planning says to an investigator, and whether this sequence of dropped and reduced charges amounts to a system being outmaneuvered.Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer.Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Asymmetric Warfare: Politics and Cultures of Violence in the Modern Era (Cambridge University Press, 2025). The forces that fight asymmetric wars are so distinct that one side avoids direct military confrontation in favor of political, social, or otherwise unorthodox means of resistance. These conflicts have been a mainstay of modern times, though scholars have often separated them into various designations by era. Observers have referred, in chronological order, to Indian warfare, petite guerre (small war), guerrilla warfare, irregular or revolutionary war, and terrorism. The proliferation of labels over time has obscured the continuity of asymmetric wars throughout modernity. Stark distinctions in resources and capabilities have shaped the reasons why states and societies have decided to fight, and the manner in which they have fought. Across the modern era, mismatches arose in the domains of technology, intelligence production, and law. But in recent decades, so-called weak powers have neutralized many of the typical advantages of strong military states. Jacob Hagstrom is an army veteran and historian. He earned a PhD in history from Indiana University, Bloomington, and taught courses at the Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. Chris Millington is Professor of Modern European History and lead of the Histories and Cultures of Conflict research group at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. He is the author of eight books including Murder in Marseille: Right-Wing Terrorism in 1930s Europe ((Manchester University Press, 2025), The Invention of Terrorism in France, 1904-1939 (Stanford University press, 2023), and France in the Second World War Collaboration, Resistance, Holocaust, Empire (Bloomsbury Academic, 2020).

"Stochastic terrorism" is the idea that if you spread fear and mistrust against a target, then eventually people will commit violence against that target, and it will be your fault, even if you never specifically said the words "you should commit violence". Some other popular examples of the concept: Nativists spread fear and mistrust about Muslim immigrants, and then racists go on shooting sprees in mosques. The #Resistance insists that Donald Trump would destroy democracy, and then various people try to assassinate Donald Trump. Conservatives spread fear and mistrust about transgender people, and then bigots commit hate crimes against transgender people. Woke people say the police are racist and brutal, and then other woke people murder police officers. Socialists call health insurance companies greedy and accuse them of blocking life-saving treatment, and then Luigi Mangione murdered a health insurance CEO. AI safety activists say that Sam Altman's AI could destroy humanity, and then a guy threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's house. Liberals said that Charlie Kirk was a hatemonger who was driving Americans apart, and then an assassin murdered Charlie Kirk. The pro-life movement describes abortion as murder, and then pro-life activists assassinated abortion doctors and pro-choice politicians. The "stochastic terrorism" concept is near-unique in how effectively it can be discredited merely by listing many examples of its use together in the same place. Almost no one supports a blanket prohibition on criticizing of all of these different groups of people. "Stochastic terrorism" mostly gets deployed opportunistically, by people who either are too blinkered to realize that the same argument could be leveraged against their own speech, or who hope you're too blinkered to realize that. (in fact, one could argue that accusing someone of stochastic terrorism is itself stochastic terrorism! Here in America, we consider it justified to kill terrorists before they can threaten us further. Reclassifying criticism as terrorism implies it is potentially legitimate to apply the same norm to any especially harsh critics!) Still, a sliver of concept-users make some fig-leaf argument that the cases they approve of are different than the cases they disapprove of. Some proposed principles: https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/against-stochastic-terrorism

Russian security officials have described an explosion at a restaurant in Moscow, which killed three people, as an act of terrorism. They have not yet said who they believe to be responsible, but there is speculation of a link to the war in Ukraine.Iran says it is in the "final stages" of talks with Oman over management of the Strait of Hormuz. Andy Burnham has said he will be "relentless" in tackling small boat crossings to "bring back control" to the UK's border. The National Farmers' Union has warned that a prolonged drought could cause shortages of some food products in shops.
Back in the fall, Trump's NSPM-7 redirected the FBI, DOJ, and IRS toward "left-wing political violence," opening the door to labeling domestic groups terrorist organizations — despite three independent datasets (New America, CSIS, even the ADL!) showing right-wing violence outpacing left-wing violence by factors of 9-to-1 or greater. Last week, Rubio's "Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism" internationalized this McCarthy reboot. Central to the rhetoric of Rubio and Miller is framing leftist politics as being driven by envy and resentment rather than a response to inequality. Matthew traces this rhetoric, empirically contradicted by relative deprivation research, back through Nietzsche, Scheler, Schoeck, and Rand. Four days after the Ministerial, the State Department's Cuba report named 70+ Americans — from spies to wedding guests — as one undifferentiated network, a scapegoat machine now churning out congressional subpoenas, a federal grand jury, and a widening dragnet. This week, we're looking at four cases that have reached very different points in the legal process. In Los Angeles, a judge is hearing the evidence prosecutors say connects musician David Anthony Burke, known as D4vd, to the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. In Buffalo, Hadi Matar is on trial on federal terrorism charges stemming from the 2022 attack on author Salman Rushdie. In Brooklyn, longtime Sinaloa Cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada has been sentenced to life in federal prison. And in Greece, a court has refused to extradite James Dalamangas to Australia over the 1999 killing of George Giannopoulos. ***This episode is not edited as it was recorded directly after Donald Trump's speech***Donald Trump went on primetime television to tell the country that America's elections are compromised. A few hours earlier, Stephen Miller gave a much quieter speech at the State Department that was far more alarming. While Trump ranted about voter fraud, voting machines, China, mail ballots and election “security,” Miller laid out a federal counterterrorism strategy aimed directly at the political left.In this episode, Robin breaks down both speeches, what NSPM-7 actually does, and why the administration's plan for the 2026 midterms goes far beyond campaign messaging. The language is already in place: disrupt, identify, defund, debank, arrest and prosecute.Trump's address got the live blogs, cable coverage and instant fact-checks. He repeated unsupported claims about noncitizen voters, Chinese interference, stolen voter data and compromised election machines. He also announced plans to involve federal agencies in state election systems, remove people from voter rolls and investigate officials tied to the alleged fraud. But while everyone was watching Trump, Stephen Miller was explaining what comes next.Speaking to foreign security officials at a State Department ministerial, Miller described the political left as a terrorism threat and defended NSPM-7, a national security directive that gives federal agencies a broad mandate to target organizations, activists and financial networks. And the scope does not stop with people accused of violence. It can reach donors, organizers, lawyers, bail funds, nonprofits and anyone the administration decides is supporting the wrong movement. The speech also went somewhere even darker. Miller attacked civil liberties, complained about juries refusing to convict people accused of assaulting ICE agents, and told the room that leftists do not look “normal” because their appearance reflects what is supposedly inside them. That language is not random. Robin traces its historical roots and explains why authoritarian movements so often describe political opponents as diseased, deformed, dangerous or visibly different. Once the enemy is defined by who they are instead of what they have done, there is no way to behave your way out of the category.Trump provides the spectacle. Miller provides the machinery and framework for what's to come. Together, the two speeches point toward a broader strategy for the 2026 midterms:• Destroy confidence in election results before voting begins• Push federal agencies deeper into state election systems• Purge voter rolls in the name of election security• Threaten media outlets that refuse to cooperate• Treat protest networks and organizers as terrorism infrastructure• Intimidate donors, lawyers, nonprofits and bail funds• Use financial pressure and debanking without waiting for criminal convictions• Export the framework through international intelligence sharingThis episode separates what the administration has actually done from what it has merely claimed. The franework is real. The evidence being used to justify it often is not.Trump's speech was the distraction. Stephen Miller's speech was the blueprint. The loud speech told America what to fear. The quiet speech explained what the government plans to do about it.Topics include Donald Trump, Stephen Miller, NSPM-7, the 2026 midterm elections, voter purges, election security, left-wing terrorism, debanking, civil liberties, ICE protests, jury trials, political repression, authoritarianism, fascism, voter fraud claims, media license threats and federal intervention in state elections.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/we-saw-the-devil-unfiltered-political-analysis--4433638/support.Website: http://www.wesawthedevil.comPatreon: http://www.patreon.com/wesawthedevilRobin's Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/robin_wstdTwitter: http://www.twitter.com/WeSawtheDevilInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/wesawthedevilpodcast.TikTok: tiktok.com/@wesawthedevilpolitics
