Send us a textWelcome to the launch of our epic 5th season on Fabulous Film & Friends! This is the big one! The one that everyone will be talking about for years to come. Why? Because this is the episode where I finally get to trash the Barbie movie as we dive into the idea of “When Good Directors Go Bad.”Inspired by the recent release of 2025's Paul Thomas Anderson/ Leonardo DiCaprio domestic terror extravaganza One Battle After Another which also stars Benicio Del Toro, Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, Regina Hall, Tony Goldwyn, Alana Haim and Sean Penn, we're going to analyze just went wrong with this promising cinematic spectacle and compare it to another creative disaster that should've been an artistic and thematic slam dunk considering its pedigree, 2023's Barbie directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Simu Liu, Rhea Perlman and Will Ferrell.  I'm your host Gino Caputi and returning to their mics pretty much right where they left them last season are little sis' Roseanne Caputi and actor photobug Gordon Alex Robertson. Alex, you're going to start this season out of the hot seat again as Roseanne is going to continue to thrill us with factoids about the directors in question Hit us again with the facts, Teach! Before we sharpen the bayonets and light the fuses: the synopses. Barbie follows the titular blonde doll as she awakes blissfully in the female run Barbie Land each day, ignoring her supposed boyfriend Ken, and partying with her fellow Barbies all night. One night during a sensationally choreographed and costumed dance party, she has an existential crisis about mortality and develops flat feet, causing her to leave Barbieland on a journey to “the real world” to find the source of her angst. Realizing her depressed feelings stem from a psychic connection to her original owner, Gloria, Barbie reconnects with Gloria and Gloria's daughter and the trio travel back to Barbieland.  Upon their return, however, they are dumbfounded to find that Ken has taken over and has brainwashed all the other Barbies into subservience to him and his fellow Kens. A battle of the sexes ensues. One Battle After Another loosely adapts Vineland, a novel by Thomas Pynchon. It follows Bob Ferguson, a bomb expert drawn into the terrorist group the French 75. Amid the group's revolutionary chaos, Bob fathers a daughter named Willa with the fiery tempered and uncontrollable Perfidia Beverly Hills. Perfidia also has a complicated relationship with the mannered and single-minded Colonel Steven Lockjaw. She is soon caught during a botched bank robbery, and Lockjaw strikes a deal with her, leading her to name names. Years later, after most of his French 75 cohorts have been hunted down by Lockjaw, Bob is still on the run in Northern California with Willa. But Lockjaw finds and captures Willa so Bob must confront the unstoppable colonel for once and for all.  Where did these two talented filmmakers go off the rails?  Find out! Watch the video podcast on Youtube:https://youtu.be/dBbbcNCNAj4

Paul Greengrass' The Lost Bus stars Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera as a bus driver and teacher, respectively, who have to navigate a deadly Californian wildfire while stuck on a school bus with a group of terrified children, very little water, and fire and flames closing in on all sides. Based on a true story (the 2018 Camp Fire is one of the deadliest wildfires in US history), it's Greengrass at his intense best, conjuring a cinematic experience that's among the best depictions of the intensity of fire, heat and flames ever put on film. And in this interview special, Chris Hewitt sits down with Greengrass (on Zoom), and McConaughey and Ferrera (in person) to talk about the experience of making it. The film is out now on AppleTV+ and, while this isn't a spoiler special, reference is made throughout to key moments from the movie, so it might be best for you to have watched it beforehand. Respectable. That may be the best thing one can say about the new Dwayne Johnson movie "The Smashing Machine." In this art house sports drama from writer-director Benny Safdie, The Rock plays troubled mixed martial arts fighter Mark Kerr who battles drugs and insecurity as well as his opponents in the ring. Emily Blunt is his impatient, moderately supportive girlfriend. The performances of real-life MMA fighters Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten and former heavyweight champion boxer Oleksander Usyk bring additional authenticity. The stars are fine, but in an attempt to avoid cliches, the movie also avoids dramatic momentum. This low-key, matter-of-fact approach prevents "The Smashing Machine" from scoring a knockout. A true story from California's devastating 2018 Camp Fire is the basis of the Apple TV+ thriller, "The Lost Bus." Matthew McConaughey stars as a troubled school bus driver who attempts to navigate the overwhelming blaze and save the lives of two dozen kids and a teacher, played by America Ferrera. Director Paul Greengrass, best known for the Jason Bourne films, knows how to build tension. With “The Lost Bus,” he's created a realistic and involving nail-biter. In the tongue-in-cheek Amazon Prime crime thriller "Play Dirty," Mark Wahlberg plays Parker, the gifted professional thief from Richard Stark's novel series. What may have worked on the page seems overblown and ludicrous on screen under the direction of action filmmaker Shane Black. After a racetrack heist goes bad, Parker recruits a band of thieves to steal some priceless antiquities and exact revenge on the woman who ruined his previous caper. A good cast is wasted in a bloody, noisy, profane and utterly preposterous crime opus.

Visit https://www.liquidiv.com & use Promo Code: REJECTS to get 20% off your first order. Join Aaron Alexander & John Humphrey as they set sail for Viking shores in DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon (2010). In a world where fearsome dragons terrorize the island of Berk, misfit teen Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (Jay Baruchel, Entourage, This Is the End) struggles to prove himself as a true Viking warrior. When Hiccup captures the elusive Night Fury—only to form an unexpected friendship—he challenges his tribe's age-old beliefs under the watchful eye of dragon-fearing chieftain Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, 300, Olympus Has Fallen). The film's standout cast includes America Ferrera (broadcast star of Ugly Betty and voice of Astrid Hofferson), who brings fierce determination to Hiccup's bold love interest; Craig Ferguson (late-night icon on The Late Late Show and voice of Gobber the Belch), providing rugged humor and mentorship; Christopher Mintz-Plasse (breakout in Kick-Ass, Role Models) as Fishlegs Ingerman, the encyclopedic dragon expert; Jonah Hill (Superbad, 21 Jump Street) as brash Snotlout Jorgenson; and Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, Saturday Night Live) lending her wild comedic flair to Ruffnut Thorston, one half of Berk's most chaotic dragon-riding duo. Aaron & John break down every epic moment—from Hiccup's heart-pounding first flight aboard the Night Fury to the breathtaking “Test Drive” sequence where dragon and rider fly in perfect harmony, and the cliffhanger Night Terror attack that cements the bond between Hiccup and Toothless. Don't miss their take on the emotional dragon-rescue montage, the iconic “Song of the Hollow” final battle that unites Vikings and dragons, and the tear-jerking moment when Stoick finally recognizes his son's true heroism. Karla Welch is back on the show! Karla first joined us back in 2018 on our Life Lessons mini-series to discuss her incredible styling career, her clothing brand, xKarla, and more. Since we last chatted, Karla founded The Period Company, which offers affordable period products, including reusable pads and absorbent underwear in a variety of styles and fabrics. The brand is sold at retailers such as Walmart, Urban Outfitters, and Amazon, and has donated over 1 million pairs of period underwear as part of its effort to end period poverty worldwide. In addition to her company, Karla also continues to style an enormous roster of talent including Justin Bieber and two of our favorite Barbie stars, America Ferrera and Greta Gerwig. On top of all that, she's also a MasterClass teacher, founder of the styling app Wishi, and co-founder of the creative studio The Welch's Creative.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The 96th Oscars ceremony is a new opportunity for Latinos and Latin Americans in the moviemaking business to be recognized for excellence in cinema. America Ferrera has earned her first Oscar nomination and Colman Domingo has become the first Afro-Latino nominated for best actor. And yet, representation of Latinos on the big screen has remained stagnant. But there are several Latinos and Latin Americans nominated who you may not have heard anything about yet. We spoke to Andes survivor Roberto Canessa and actor Matias Recalt from “The Society of the Snow;” director Maite Alberdi from “The Eternal Memory;” and producer Phil Lord from “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” Editorial note: This interview was recorded in early February.

America Ferrera didn't expect that her performance in Barbie would lead to an Oscar nomination but few things in life have gone in a straight line for the daughter of working class immigrants from Honduras. America and Marc talk about how she encountered stereotypical typecasting even at a young age but saw that her work was making a tangible difference in how people saw themselves on the screen. They also talk about how America satisfied her desire for a career in international relations, her feelings about being part of cultural conversations dictated by others, and that Barbie monologue.
