Sensational worship, but lacking in theological depth. Unnecessary titles. Too much politics in the pulpit. There are many misconceptions about the black church, and today's guest is here to address them. Dr. Anthony Bradley is an author, a Professor of Religious Studies, and a Research Fellow at the Acton Institute. He joins Keith to set the record straight on several notable differences between black and white American churches today. The two also discuss problematic theologians and whether or not their contributions to the faith should be discredited due to the fact that they were slaveholders. Plus, how should Christians think about their vote? Was Vice President Kamala Harris a DEI candidate? What does it say about our country that we're not talking about real issues, but instead basing our decisions more on “vibes”? And does the Bible provide a clear explanation for differences between men and women beyond biology? Lots of topics on the table. Buckle up! Have you benefitted personally from Truth Over Tribe or seen it have a positive effect on someone you know? have you used the podcast, book, or blog as a catalyst for conversation on polarizing topics? (AURN News) — Black congregations in the United States have borne a disproportionate financial and mental burden from the COVID-19 pandemic compared to white and multiracial congregations, according to a report released in January. The Understanding the Pandemic Impact on Black and Multiracial Congregations report was funded by the Lilly Endowment and led by researchers at the Hartford Institute for Religion Research. It found stark disparities in how the pandemic affected churches of different racial makeups. One of the key findings of the report underscores the financial strain experienced by Black churches. Between the summer and fall of 2021, majority-Black congregations witnessed a significant downturn in their financial stability compared to their white and multiracial counterparts. The disparity persisted even in the post-pandemic period, with 34% of majority-Black churches reporting worsened financial health from 2018 to 2023, as opposed to 28% for multiracial churches and 29% for white majority churches. The report unveils a concerning trend in the optimism levels within Black and multiracial congregations. Over the course of two years, spanning from spring 2021 to spring 2023, there was a noticeable decline in optimism among these two groups, indicating the major challenges they continue to face in navigating the aftermath of the pandemic. So, what about the mental well-being of Black clergy members? By spring 2023, Black clergy reported a decrease in their overall mental health, in stark contrast to their white counterparts who experienced an actual increase. The data utilized in the report draws from the Faith Communities Today (FACT) and the Exploring the Pandemic Impact on Congregations (EPIC) surveys. Learn more about your ad choices. Purity Culture is largely embedded within White social and political systems intended to dominate and control bodies through a hyper-moralistic, anti-sex landscape. However, in this last week of Black History month, it's imperative that we talk about the ways that Purity Culture has impacted Black communities. To help us, we are sharing our interview with Deesha Philyaw (@deeshaphilyaw), author of The Secret Lives of Church Ladies, about how the values of Purity Culture have infiltrated Black churches and informed sexual relationships and expectations within the Black community. We talk about: Purity Culture within Cultural Contexts Values How Sexual Misinformation Informs the Writing Process The Lack of Conversation Divorce within the Church Fiction and Sexual Health Suffering in Silence “Daddy Issues'' Grief Working Through Self-Hate Through Fiction Sexism within Black Churches Check out Episode 59: Banned Books: The Secret Lives of Church Ladies, with Deesha Philyaw on Apple Podcast, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. The National Summit on Antisemitism recently revealed a troubling insight: nearly half of Jewish Americans are reluctant to openly display their faith, driven by a fear of rising antisemitism. Keith Jefferson, a retired missionary, is spearheading an ambitious initiative to galvanize Black churches in the United States towards global missions, with a particular focus on Brazil. And, in the Baptist Press Toolbox, Jacki King says Gen Z is making an impact that should be well-noted.
Research shows an increase in Black Americans who identify as spiritual rather than religious. Instead of following a specific set of organized beliefs and practices, they prefer a more individualized approach to faith. Alainta and Lawrence share their thoughts on the matter. More than a dozen Black churches have left Boston, or shuttered completely over the last ten years, according to reporting from the Boston Globe. Issues including gentrification, the cost of real estate and declining membership are among the factors contributing to the migration of these churches from Boston proper to nearby municipalities including Brockton, Abington and Randolph. Today, Boston Globe Reporter Tiana Woodard joins The Common for a look at the factors driving some Black churches out of the city, and how these moves are impacting faith communities. The Rev. Dr. Kevin Slayton, a longtime policy advocate and minister, has written a compelling new book about the intersection of politics and the pulpit. The book is titled Politically Preaching: Why Politics are Local to the Black Church. Slayton chronicles the history of Black clergy vetting, promoting, encouraging or dismissing candidates for public office, and he turns an unstinting eye to those in the church who have not, in his view, done enough to apply the principles of Prophetic Social Engagement to the many ills that afflict the African American community in Baltimore and beyond. Later in the conversation, Tom and Rev. Slayton are joined by longtime political mentor and professor Larry Gibson. Clip From Ep #387 Of The Clay Edwards Show On 103.9 WYAB 1. Yesterday morning, some thug burned down seven buildings in Jackson including 2 black churches and the JSU baseball field. In typical Jacksonian fashion they assumed it was due to racism and it must have been the klan or a white supremacist group committing these hateful acts. They even suggested that it may be one you, a listener of the Clay Edwards show or Save JXN follower. Black leaders from Project 21 demand that Verizon reinstate One America News (OAN) on its television platform. In a letter signed by 37 members representing the communities of business, politics, media and faith, Project 21 explained that Verizon did "a tremendous disservice to its subscribers, investors and free speech [and]... is silencing black voices" when it canceled OAN. Verizon stopped carrying OAN on its Fios platform at the end of July. Its cancellation marked the end of a 17-year relationship between the news channel and the carrier. Left-wing groups are aggressively pushing media companies to drop the conservative-leaning OAN from their platforms. In the letter, Project 21 said: "Do what's right for black America, for your investors and for the country by reinstating OAN immediately." In the letter addressed to Verizon Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Hans Vestberg, the three dozen Project 21 signors criticized the abrupt decision that appeased political special interests over viewers, noting this imperils access to information and debate: "Allowing a political pressure campaign to decide which news and information programs Americans have access to undermines free speech and sets a precedent that will only encourage further demands. This is particularly dangerous as this pressure appears to only go one way - anti-conservative and, in this case, anti-black." "You have now projected weakness, inviting those further demands," Project 21 warned Vestberg. It was suggested Verizon's capitulation could lead to the removal of other channels in the future. Among those who signed the letter to Verizon are Project 21 Chairman Horace Cooper; Stacy Washington, a host on SiriusXM satellite radio; Alveda King, founder of speakforlife(.org) and niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; Star Parker, president of the Center for Urban Renewal and Education (CURE); Julian Boykin, CEO of Acquisition Consulting Experts; Reverend Albert Sampson, president of the Chicago's Metropolitan Council of Black Churches and Chris Arps, host at NewstalkSTL-St. Louis. A full copy of the letter and its signers is available at https://nationalcenter.org/project-21-oan-letter. Project 21, a leading voice of black conservatives for over 25 years, is sponsored by the National Center for Public Policy Research. Its members have been quoted, interviewed or published over 40,000 times since the program was created in 1992. Contributions to the National Center are tax-deductible and greatly appreciated, and may be earmarked exclusively for the use of Project 21. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-aidan-byrne0/support
