Bonnie Crawford, along with 19 other women, recently went to Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Now there are a number of things that make this group quite unusual – bold you might say. First, the group size was 20. That’s a lot of people all attempting a summit. I know because I’ve managed a group of 10 up Kilimanjaro. Second, this was an all-female group and that is really unusual and pretty cool. Finally, what really makes this group of women so unusual and what, you might argue, is the most bold part about their goal, is that they are all plus-sized women. They are women who came together despite of – maybe because of – they are overweight. But they were all determined to not let that stop them and, together, they were motivated to work toward their summit. Bonnie is no stranger to athletic activities and to dedicating herself to a goal. She’s an accomplished Ironman finisher – multiple times over – and she spent more than a year methodically preparing herself for this trip up Kilimanjaro. As Bonnie points out in this conversation, a large percentage of our population is overweight. I don’t want to gloss over this fact nor do I want to pretend that it’s OK that we’ve gotten ourselves into this crisis. But I do want to recognize and give huge props to Bonnie and the women who were part of her group because they are leading by example and advocating for people to hike and embrace other forms of exercise no matter their size. The message here is that you need to start moving no matter where you are in your body size or shape. There may be more obstacles for you – and she addresses some of them – but she and others who are putting themselves out there, not only physically but also emotionally, are an excellent example of overcoming fears and doubts and physical issues to prove what’s possible. With that, please enjoy this conversation with Bonnie Crawford. ***** Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits reserved for supporters of the podcast! ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? What steps you can take to decide if you should focus on your physical, mental, or spiritual health first until you have spent time in all three to reach synergy. Power Quotes From The Show "The brain is a computer that's just following instructions. It's not going to notice opportunities for advancement because we've conditioned it to focus on not having enough, feeling stressed, and believing that nothing is possible." - @LivinOptimistic http://bit.ly/wfpodcast "I'm here to help people realize that a different emotional state is possible. I don't think many people recognize the impact that our emotions have on us on a regular basis. They impact our decisions, interactions, relationships, finances, health, and fitness; they impact everything in our lives. Our emotions are impacting every component of what we're experiencing. There's a real disconnection because we've been taught to just shut our emotions down, numb them down, and tune them out. My job is to wake people up and to help them make that connection but make it in a way so that we can feel responsibly and take ownership of our emotions." - Bonnie Kelly "I do like the idea of creating and maintaining high vibes but the reality is that life isn't 'Good Vibes Only,' and if you're only allowing them to enter your life, you're not permitting real reality in and you're going to be missing opportunities for growth. Growth doesn't happen in the good vibes; growth happens in the hardship, struggles, and failures that we go through in life. Of course, it's not pretty and I'm not wishing those experiences upon anyone but that's how we evolve. Sometimes people take 'Good Vibes Only' to a point where they're just going to completely remove people from their lives because they're not in the right vibration. It's a way to run from intimacy and relationships without going through the process of taking inventory of the people in your life and deciding whether or not they're serving your higher purpose." - Bonnie Kelly "When you feel this pain or negative energy within yourself, that's going to need exploration because you need to understand what's triggering it and where it's coming from. What is this? What are you feeling? If you actually just pause to look at that, that will bring you so much insight and awareness. That will tell you where your perception is and what vibrations you're conditioned to look for because that's what's going to drive tomorrow's decisions and experiences. That's where whatever vibration you're feeling begins to control and dictate your life." - Bonnie Kelly    Links From Today's Show Bonnie Kelly Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube LinkedIn True To Your Core by Bonnie Kelly WFR 040 - Bonnie Kelly: How To Get Out Of Your Own Way WFR 087 - Bonnie Kelly: True To Your Core MindFu Academy Why We Self-Sabotage and How to Eliminate Self-Sabotage Start Feeling Good Enough Power vs. Force by David R. Bonnie Parrish-Kell is inspiring! She began her athletic journey at age 50 and leads a life that shows us all that we are never too old or too out of shape to lead an active lifestyle. Based in Las Vegas, Nevada, Bonnie Parrish-Kell is the “Chief Diva” at Slowpoke Divas, an online source of information and inspiration for women – who may be overweight, out of shape, or over 40 years of age – to rediscover the joys of a healthy lifestyle and outdoor sports. She started her athletic journey at age 50 by participating in a beginner-friendly triathlon. That single event showed her how decades of inactivity took a toll on her fitness level, strength, weight, and sense of well-being! As Bonnie then worked with a local triathlon coach, she met other women like herself who “dared to dream” of becoming runners, cyclists, swimmers, or hikers, but doubted their abilities, were afraid of ridicule, or felt unsupported. Slowpoke Divas serves to provide the support, encouragement, and community women like these wanted and needed. Bonnie is a race walker, cyclist, an occasional triathlete, and consistent participant in state-level senior Olympics with goals of qualifying in her sports for the biennial National Senior Games. She is the triathlon coordinator for 2018 Nevada Senior Games, and an ambassador for the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah. She is also works with the U.S. Power Walking Association. She can be reached at www.SlowpokeDivas.com.   PODCAST HOST:   Coach Kim Peek is the founder of Power of Run. She loves running, triathlon and discovering new ways to challenge her fitness. She is a breast cancer survivor and a dog mom… and a mother to three girls who love theater and film. She enjoys traveling with her husband and kids, especially when the travel involves a beach. She believes that exercise and nutrition can improve our quality of life and longevity, and she is on a mission to help others learn how they can incorporate small changes that will make a big difference in their health and happiness.  Kim offers online training programs for women who want to run their first or fastest 5K, half marathon, marathon or triathlon. Bonnie Carroll is a 2015 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She’s a former White House West Wing staffer and Air Force Reserve Major whose life was forever changed when her husband, Brigadier General Tom Carroll, was killed in an Army C-12 plane crash in November 1992. As Bonnie searched for support, she realized there was no organization dedicated to providing help to military families grieving the death of a loved one. In 1994, she founded TAPS – Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors – a national support program that has offered hope and healing to 70,000 military family members, casualty officers, and caregivers. Bonnie joins us to talk about the experience of losing her husband, her vision for TAPS, and some of the people they’ve been able to serve.

A woman's recovery walk is unique. Bonnie relapsed after 15 years sobriety. During those years she got her Master's degree in the counseling field, married, and became a mother to 3 children. Bonnie thought enough time passed, her kids needed to come first now. As Bonnie traces the steps leading to relapse, she remembers the loud recovery community's warning: "Don't put anything in front of your recovery, because you will lose THAT, and your sobriety.” This is a story about women, mothers, and making the bold decision to always put recovery first. Most important, Bonnie's story is a story of hope and redemption. Finally, Donna will also make an announcement in the last 7 minutes of the show...
