Many of us have spent a lifetime trying to shrink ourselves. We grew up being told you could never be too thin. As athletes, especially in endurance sports, smaller, lighter, faster was the ethos of the day. That is changing as we see athletes, especially women, discover that being fueled and strong yields even better performance–and longevity. This week's guest, trainer and nutrition coach Steph Gaudreau embodies that journey through both her personal and professional life. She shares how, for 40+ women especially, growing muscles is the key to better energy and performance in sport and life, and how strength training is the gateway to midlife self-acceptance. Steph Gaudreau, CISSN, CPT, helps athletic women over 40 fuel themselves better, get stronger, increase their energy, and perform better in the gym. She's a sports nutritionist and strength coach with multiple certifications including USA Weightlifting coach, Menopause Health & Fitness Specialist, Girls Gone Strong Women's Coaching Specialist, and Intuitive Eating Counselor. Steph Gaudreau is a sports nutritionist and lifting coach who helps athletic women build strength and confidence in the gym and beyond. She is no stranger to the Strength in the Details podcast and shares some really powerful information on the benefits of an effective strength training program. In this episode, we discuss the need to shift the narrative around women and muscle and the promotion of strength training to women. Building lean muscle is so important for more than just aesthetics. We also discuss the benefits of barbell sports and the practice of rucking as a low-impact cross-training activity. Of course, we have to talk about the positive effects of strength training on mental health and overall well-being. The conversation emphasizes the need to expand the focus beyond weight loss and connect strength training to life experiences. THE GRITTY DETAILS There are many entry points to barbell and strength sports - the most important step is to get started and find a coach who is knowledgeable. Cross-training is an important consideration. Rucking is an example of low-impact aerobic activity that can help improve muscle strength and bone density to complement your strength training goals.  For athletic women, the benefits of strength training are important during menopause for off-setting muscle loss and maintaining mobility. Do we really need to go to the gym or is it enough to work out at home? What about joyful movement?  Can building strength really be joyful?  What if we don't want to lift weights? We talk about our why.  How we want to feel when we move. We talk about how women 40+ need a greater stimulus to encourage muscle adaptation, especially as our hormone levels fluctuate. We talk about the aesthetic. Why it may be a good entry point for some folks, who might then come to appreciate the other benefits of their training more.If we are trying to get off the diet train, and move away from looks based movement, can we still take pride in the changes that strength training may bring?  Is threads really worth our time;)I hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it.There are many ways to work with Steph and she has an exciting new program in the offing so watch this space.Steph usually hangs out on Instagram or you can contact her and find out about her current programs through her website. Sports Nutritionist, Coach, and Author, Steph Gaudreau, joins the podcast to talk about the importance of proper nutrition and the consequences of low energy availability for strength athletes. Her personal experiences with poor nutrition habits led her to dig into the science behind nutrition. She primarily focuses on women strength athletes but is a wealth of knowledge for all individuals. In this conversation, Steph shares the importance of social media literacy and how to discern credible resources of the science that is communicated freely and unfiltered on the internet. We get into the details of training nutrition, quality of food choices, and the impact of nutrition on your mental health and performance. Steph also provides some practical tips for athletes who desire to take on a fat-loss phase or those competing in a weight-class restricted strength sport. THE GRITTY DETAILS An athlete does not have a specific look. If you are training with intention and intensity your athletic endeavors will require good nutrition practices, sleep habits, and a focus on long-term goals for sustained performance. Low energy availability (LEA) occurs when the amount of energy that you are expending through daily functions and training exceeds the amount of energy that you consume through nutrition. LEA leads to a decrease in muscle strength, lack of motivation, increased risk for injury, and poor sexual health. It also leads to negative psychological outcomes. Carbohydrates are not making us fat. Carbohydrates are the primary energy source for most exercise and are your body's preferred energy source. The important factor to consider is food quality when it comes to carbohydrate intake. Athletes should focus on strategic fat loss phases that are guided by a credentialed person that truly knows what they are doing to minimize muscle loss and strength adaptations. Today's guest is Steph Gaudreau, who is a strength nutrition specialist and lifting coach helping women lift weights, get stronger, and experience the life-changing magic of focusing on what you can do instead of only focusing on what you look like. Today we'll chat about her transition away from restrictive diet culture and how that experience frames her work today. Her experience with Paleo and the restrictions that went with it led her to learn how intuitive eating really is better for your body, especially when it comes to fitness goals. In the wellness space, a lot of it is oversimplified into “just eat this way.” With that comes the moralization of how well you're able to do that, and if you don't follow the program perfectly at all times that makes you less of a person. There's also a disregard for marginalized peoples - the vast majority of industry “leaders” are cishet white dudes. We have a long way to go when it comes to examining our internal and external biases about who can and can't be a health or nutrition expert. However, our continuously increasing focus on soils for biomass provision (food, fiber, and energy) through intensive agriculture is rapidly degrading soils and diminishing their capacity to deliver other vital functions. These tradeoffs in soil functionality – the increased provision of one function at the expense of other critical planetary functions – are the focus of this review." Podcast Questions: 1. Calorie Restriction While Training Hard [6:58] From Maryann in THR I just got in from my best long run. Ever. It was a 12 mile run: 2 Repeats of 2 miles easy / 4 miles at half marathon pace. I want to thank Ryan Baxter for introducing me to Steph Gaudreau and the concept that too much calorie restriction while training hard is a mistake. My daily calorie intake gradually increased from 1,200 to between 1,400 and 1,800. My performance has improved and my weight / size has stayed the same. It's easy to see how so many female athletes get their heads so screwed up. 2. How To Get Volume of Protein, and The Magic of LMNT [10:01] Dave says: Hi Robb, I'm trying to figure out how to get enough grams of protein in my diet, and it seems almost impossible without massively overeating.   I'm about 210 pounds, and my ideal weight with healthy composition is probably in the 190-200 range.   Depending on who's advice you follow in the paleo/keto/IF/carnivore community I should be getting at least 100g of protein, and possibly as much as 200g by some accounts.   Over the last month I've been tracking macros carefully and eating basically nothing but meat, eggs, cheese, above-ground veggies, and some (good) fat.  But it's rare that I get more than about 80g of protein even when I try, and if I do get much more than that I feel over-full the entire day.   I've made a point of trying to see if I could get 150g of protein, and eating almost nothing but meat, still couldn't do it. Is it actually feasible to meet the recommendations?  The only ways I see to do it are to either drink gobs of whey powder (which would be rather unenjoyable) or workout so much and so intensely that my body would happily double up on calorie intake, which seems rather impractical as a fully-employed 53 year old .  Am I missing something? I'd love to get your perspective on this, and please accept my apologies if you've talked about this on your podcast or other forums-- I'm still catching up on several of them. Also, LMNT is amazing and has changed my life (I truly mean that).  I'm an avid mountain biker, and I use to routinely get cramps, sometimes quite horribly.  I tried everything. The only thing that helped, but only to a degree was using some salt tablets.  But after starting using LMNT this summer, they're completely gone.  It's amazing.  But even more:  I used to also routinely have heart palpitations (not the dangerous kind, but still unnerving), as well as restless leg syndrome.   Both are gone now.  And after I made the connection, I've noticed that if I feel the palpitations or the beginning of restless leg, within 30 minutes of taking LMNT they're gone.  That's happened frequently enough that I'm now sure it's causal.  I've literally never seen or heard anyone make the connection between RLS and salts/electrolytes, but it clearly mattered for me and seems plausible in retrospect given the role of electrolyte deficiency in nervous system and muscular dysfunction.  In any case, THANK YOU!!! Dave (By the way, since writing this a few days ago, the insight I had was that I was adding a fair amount of fat as well, which makes me full, so this week I'm reducing the amount of added fats (e.g., butter, clean Mayo, etc) to see if that makes room for more meat.) 3. Kids and Lockdown [16:56] Jen says: I was listening the new year's podcast re:kid's development and covid lockdowns.I  work in prevention and mental health awareness. The lockdowns have been awful and the lack of shared air community has been devastating on so many. But I worry about the rising cry coming from the education and occupational health sectors regarding "lags" in kid's development during cvid. This lament is (at least in my personal experience)  spawning conversations on how this proves that homeschooling is defunct and school choice shouldn't be an option-obviously parents can't teach their kids anything, right?  "Experts" showing up and telling the rest of the country that the people in an area are too stupid to handle themselves and their kids is a national legacy (Shenandoah Natl Park, the Chicago Projects) . While the detriment of lock downs needs to be explored, I worry about this rallying cry and what exactly it may mean for our kid's over all futures. Just my (crazy) two cents. What is Intuitive Eating Anyway?

We are unpacking the truth behind what intuitive eating really is, clearing up any misconceptions and shedding light on its benefits! The phrase intuitive eating is thrown around the internet often. But what actually does it mean? There is a lot of misinformation out there and today our guest nutritionist is giving us the truth! Steph Gaudreau, NTP, is a nutritional therapy, intuitive eating, and strength training expert helping purpose-driven women build stronger bodies and healthier relationships with food. In her best-selling book, The Core 4, she details a four pillar approach to building health, embracing your body, and owning your power. Steph is trained in biology and human physiology and is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, and USA Weightlifting Sports Performance coach. Her weekly podcast, the Listen to Your Body Podcast, has 3+ million downloads. She’s an international speaker that has been featured in Outside, MindBodyGreen, SELF, and ESPN Radio. Make sure to check out her FREE Food Freedom Mini course! What is Intuitive Eating? Simply put, intuitive eating is a set of 10 principals that you use to improve your relationship with food, yourself and your body. It is when what your body is telling you (as in your likes dislikes, etc) merges with the external stuff you are exposed to (like things you should and shouldn't so, what's "bad" or "good," etc). Th goal is to find overlap between what the external world tells you and your internal world to achieve optimal health for you. Everything we consume online and in the media has made people more disconnected with our own bodies and it's needs, so it helps bring us home to our body. Intuitive Eating and Mindful Eating Intuitive eating and mindful eating have a lot in common. Mindfulness is a component of intuitive eating, but intuitive eating goes a lot further and deeper. Both are centered around the concept of honoring your body, being present and in tune. Both have many studies, but one main difference is that the studies associated with mindful eating tend to be centered on weight loss. However intuitive eating is weight neutral. You can also get certified to be an intuitive eating counselor. The Basis of Intuitive Eating Intuitive eating was first coined in 1995 by two registered dietitians, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. It is based on 10 principals: Reject the Diet MentalityHonor Your HungerMake Peace with FoodChallenge the Food PoliceDiscover the Satisfaction FactorFeel Your FullnessCope with Your Emotions with KindnessRespect Your BodyMovement- Feel the DifferenceHonor Your Health- Gentle Nutrition While it has been around a while, it's really in the last few years that it has caught on. There are over 150 studies and growing, going into things like the efficacy of intuitive eating for mental and physiological health. Weight Loss and Intuitive Eating Intuitive eating is a weight neutral practice. Weight is something that is not focused on and can go up, down or stay the same. Honoring your hunger is one of the principles of intuitive eating. This not only focuses on the idea of eating when you are hungry, but also learning to feel your body's cues of satiety. Hormone signals for satiety don't happen in the first 5 minutes of eating, so the simple act of slowing down gives your body a chance to catch up and allows you to feel when you are full. So instead of counting your calories and allowing that to control what you eat, learning to honor your body's natural cues is the focus with intuitive eating. Diet Culture In intuitive eating, you work on making health promoting habits that stick and that have potentially no bearing on weight. Because weight and health has been so connected for so long, it's hard to break the habit of connecting the two. The goal of intuitive eating is to improve your relationship with food a...
