For many Americans, Memorial Day holds multiple meanings—the arrival of summer and its seasonal delights can sometimes overshadow its true significance, yet ceremonies and parades across the nation honor our nation's fallen heroes. For families of those fallen, Memorial Day is not contained to just one day. Bonnie Carroll is a retired Air Force Reserve Major and founder of the TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors), and she joins the Rundown to share how her organization supports grieving military families year-round. This Memorial Day, we commemorate eighty years since the end of World War II and remember the sacrifices made for freedom. Robert Edsel, author of Remember Us: American Sacrifice, Dutch Freedom, and Forever Promise Forged in World War Two, joins to discuss his new book and what the holiday means for Americans. Plus, commentary from retired Navy SEAL and host of FOX Nation's, "The Unsung of Arlington," Mike Sarraille. Photo Credit: AP Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Last week you heard from Bonnie Carroll about her work with host Paul Rieckhoff to create the American Veterans for Ukraine organization. Immediately after recording that show, in advance of Memorial Day, at a historic event at Ukraine House in Washington, D.C., five leading voices from the American veterans community formally announced the formation of a groundbreaking new veterans organization focused on supporting victory in Ukraine. American Veterans for Ukraine, is a groundbreaking new effort from our host, Paul Rieckhoff, and past guests of the show Bonnie Carroll, Matt Gallagher, Adrian Bonenberger and Nolan Peterson. AVU is an American, non-partisan, non-profit organization with a clear mission: connecting, uniting and empowering American veterans to support victory for Ukraine. AVU's two lines of effort to ensure that mission is accomplished are: 1. Driving public support for Ukraine. 2. Protecting continued US government funding for the fight. Along with the AVU Founders, attendees heard from Hope for Ukraine CEO, Yuriy Boyechko, Co-Founder of TAPS Ukraine and reserve Lieutenant in the Ukrainian military, Yuliya Dmytrova, as well as Katherine Semenyuk, a Ukrainian American military chaplain who on the first day of the Russian invasion, gave birth to her fifth child in a bunker, embodying the spirit of survival and determination. A video statement was also presented from Admiral James Stavridis, USN (Ret) and 16th Supreme Allied Commander of NATO. AVU's five Co-Founders are known worldwide for their commitment to America, to the veterans community, and to issues of national security, global security, and peace. They represent a deep and diverse scope of backgrounds and are combining efforts to meet this critical moment in American and global history. It was an inspiring event and we want you to join us. Days before AVU launched another great organization hosted a gala as IAVA Salutes had another great event in support of their noble cause. As we reflect on Memorial Day, please keep organizations like IAVA and TAPS in mind. They are the helpers. And sometimes the helpers need a little help. And one more thing to keep in mind as you navigate the chaos as we pay tribute to the great Bill Walton, a true American hero who did it his own way. A true icon and a great Independent American. Another Memorial Day is upon us. A reminder of all those we've lost. And, a reminder that no matter how high the stakes, no matter how challenging the odds, as the allied forces showed us on D-Day and throughout WW2, and as generations of American service members throughout other points in history, the underdog can win. The underdog can come back. And win. We should also keep that in mind when it comes to Ukraine. Because Ukraine will show us underdogs can come back. But it's also the time some real heroes also back a comeback. People who step up to answer the call. Including 5 people you've heard on this show. And one you'll hear from in this episode. . And we'll intro you introduce you to American Veterans for Ukraine, a groundbreaking new effort from our host, Paul Rieckhoff, Bonnie Carroll, Matt Gallagher, Adrian Bonenberger and Nolan Peterson. And in this episode we dig into all of it with Bonnie Carroll (@Bonnie_at_TAPS). Bonnie is a true helper and she has helped to guide so many people through similar awful journeys. Grief is an unbearable burden and Bonnie and the amazing volunteers that she works with at TAPS help the survivors to learn how to carry that weight. They're helpers. And as we head into another Memorial Day weekend with heavy hearts, we all could use some help. As the war in Ukraine rages on, TAPS is there, helping them deal with the grief. Helping them navigate their pain. And she takes time out to join us for a very special episode, to help us all as we struggle to process the seemingly endless cycle of senseless violence that has occurred over the past few weeks. "They f***ing failed our kids again." How many more times? How many more times? That's our friend and a conscience for America, Fred Guttenberg. His 14-year-old daughter Jaime was murdered in the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on February 14, 2018. Fred is again a conscience for America, a hero, a helper. But he shouldn't have to keep doing this. It's just not fair. To our children, to our fellow citizens, to him. He joined us back in Ep99 for one of our most powerful pods ever. Fred is angry. And we should all be angry. Because if you're not angry, you're not paying attention. But being angry isn't enough. Thoughts and prayers aren't enough. We have to be like Fred, and turn that righteous anger into positive impact. This week, in an address to the nation, President Biden was focused, measured, empathetic, righteous and strong. After all the tragedy he's experienced himself, this week is a moment Biden is built for. We need him to be at his best now more than any other time in his Presidency. Because mass shootings are–and continue to be–our greatest national security threat. This IS a national security issue. And it's time to start treating it like one. Ukraine is sending America condolences. That's how bad it is. For the last couple of years this show has highlighted the ways that our political system is broken. We've explored how partisan primaries push us further apart, how elections are designed to make independents fail, to convince people that the choices we face are binary. Us or them. Red blue. Good bad. And most importantly, we've explored how the system is designed to divide. And during those years, our political system has continued to devolve. Failure after failure. By both parties. On almost every single issue. In poll after poll, the truth is obvious. The politicians aren't representing the will of the people on either side of the aisle. From gun control to women's reproductive rights to our schools, nothing that our broken binary system touches survives. Now more than ever, this is a time for change. Now more than ever, this is a time for Independent Americans. And as America mourns the latest horrible tragedy, we've got a perfect voice to help us all navigate the pain. Bonnie Carroll (@Bonnie_at_TAPS) is a true helper and she has helped to guide so many people through similar awful journeys. Grief is an unbearable burden and Bonnie and the amazing volunteers that she works with at TAPS help the survivors to learn how to carry that weight. They're helpers. Bonnie Carroll: Founder and President of TAPS: (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors)
On September 7th 2020 we acknowledge National Suicide Prevention Week, which happens to include the September 11th anniversary. 9/11/2001 was a life changing day for the world, and also a day that many of our servicemembers look back on as the impetus for their own dedication to service. As the number of individuals who die by suicide increases, so too do the number of survivors impacted by the loss. Home Base recognizes and honors the sacrifice of Families of the Fallen, to include those whose family member died in service to our country and to those who lost a loved one by suicide. In 2017, Home Base collaborated with Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) to establish a first-in-the nation two-week Intensive Clinical Program (ICP) for survivors of traumatic loss. The program provides 63 hours of treatment – the equivalent of more than one year’s worth of therapy – for post-traumatic stress and complicated grief, putting our Families of the Fallen on a path of healing and hope.We would like to say a special thank you to Raytheon Technologies, who just stepped forward with significant support for the Families of the Fallen ICP. Raytheon Technologies is leading the way, and we are deeply grateful as we would not be able to fully provide this care without the generosity of partners like Raytheon Technologies. And if you would like to join in this effort at Home Base to provide this expert care for our military families, please go to click here, where you can also make a donation in someone’s honor or memory. He digs into the top national defense, first-responders and vets news and shares a powerful conversation with Medal of Freedom recipient and legendary TAPS Founder Bonnie Carroll (@bonnie_at_taps). Angry Americans continues a groundbreaking focus on the front-line fighters of the war against COVID-19 with another inspiring guest shaping the future. This Memorial Day will be unlike any other. Arlington National Cemetery is closed to visitors. Parades are canceled. Veterans are being buried without military funerals. Memorial Day is about remembering those lost to our nation’s wars. And this year, with over 93,000 Americana dead from the coronavirus, there is a profound sense of mourning and loss nationwide. But it can also be a time for unity. And to draw lessons about how to mourn and move forward after loss from a courageous group of people: surviving military families. Over 7,000 troops have died in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries since 9/11. Over 6,000 are lost every year to suicide. Mostly hidden from the nation’s view. But now, America is feeling the pain of loss. And military families can help us understand pain and move forward. Their greatest champion is Bonnie Carroll. [47:44] Bonnie is one of toughest leaders you’ll ever meet. So many of us confront immense trauma and tragedy in life, leaving us to cope with different levels of pain. Quite often this pain can outweigh our coping skills, setting us up for further disaster. We’ve learned through our own lives, the importance of getting the upper hand on this pain before it leads us down a path that is even more difficult to return from. We’ve also had the opportunity to meet and interview people from all over this country, with their own incredible stories of turning pain into purpose. In this episode we pull snippets of interviews with past guests who shared their own personal stories of turning pain into a new purpose. Dave Roever is a Vietnam veteran who was so severely wounded that he was declared KIA. He's endured decades of surgeries and rehabilitation that have the potential to destroy his positive outlook on life. Instead, Dave turned his pain into purpose by using his experiences to help others. Chad Littlefield died alongside his friend Chris Kyle. His family still struggles beneath the weight of their grief, but they choose to use their own pain to honor Chad's legacy. Today they are a large part of Operation Valor, a non-profit serving to support other veteran-based organizations. Bonnie Carroll fell hard into her own grief when her husband died in a military aviation accident. Unable to locate supportive services, Bonnie created TAPS, which is now this nation's largest and most influential tragedy support system for military families. Dr. Sean Stephenson was given a death sentence just moments after he was born. But this remarkable individual defied his doctors' prognosis first by living, and then by going on to lead an extraordinary life. Today Dr. Stephenson is a wildly sought after speaker and highly successful therapist. Join our community & get our complimentary Free Guide: 10 Step to Double Down On Your American Dream. The second part of VA's motto calls on us to care for the widows and orphans of those that have "borne the battle." Earlier this year, we had Ashlynne Haycock on during our round-table podcast talking about the Forever GI Bill, and she talked about how a crucial element of the new bill was to benefit survivors. This week, we bring on Bonnie Carroll, the president and founder of the Transition Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). Bonnie Carroll founded Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) following the death of her husband in an Army C-12 plane crash on November 12, 1992. TAPS is the leading national Military Service Organization providing compassionate care, casework assistance, and 24/7/365 emotional support for all those impacted by the death of a military loved one. She is a Veteran of the Air National Guard and a 2015 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Bonnie and I talk about her military service, losing her husband, founding TAPS, dealing with grief, and how survivors can get assistance and peer-to-peer support through TAPS.
Bonnie Carroll is a 2015 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She’s a former White House West Wing staffer and Air Force Reserve Major whose life was forever changed when her husband, Brigadier General Tom Carroll, was killed in an Army C-12 plane crash in November 1992. As Bonnie searched for support, she realized there was no organization dedicated to providing help to military families grieving the death of a loved one. In 1994, she founded TAPS – Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors – a national support program that has offered hope and healing to 70,000 military family members, casualty officers, and caregivers. Bonnie joins us to talk about the experience of losing her husband, her vision for TAPS, and some of the people they’ve been able to serve.
