But what exactly is emotional contagion? How does it manifest itself in our behavior, relationships, and everyday life?   Let's explore emotional contagion from a seduction perspective as well as look at its effects on unhealthy and healthy empathy as well as the biology of belief.   What is Emotional Contagion? First off, let's define emotional contagion in simple terms:   It's when we catch or “absorb” another person's emotions just by being around them or interacting with them.   We don't actually "feel" their embodied emotions like they do but instead, we become influenced by their emotional state so that our own behaviors start to adapt to fit theirs.   This type of influence is sometimes referred to as "social proof."   Social Proof is a psychological phenomenon where a person mirrors the behaviors of others in an attempt to connect and fit in. In essence, it's the notion that, since others are doing it, I should be doing it, too.   When one person experiences an emotion such as fear or joy, those feelings spread quickly throughout the group in which they are present. It is an incredibly powerful phenomenon that has a deep impact on our behavior, relationships, and everyday life.   Where Does Empathy Come In? So, empathy is an emotional capacity that allows us to understand and share the feelings of others.   It is a powerful ability that can be used for good or ill, and it has been studied extensively by psychologists in both its positive and negative forms.   Empathy enables us to more deeply connect with people, helping us form stronger relationships and build emotional bonds with those around us.   By understanding empathy better, we can use it to create a healthier environment for all.   Empathy without borders however is a prime candidate for emotional contagion; it's where people can accidentally label themselves as an HSP (highly sensitive person) when really, they just have poor emotional awareness and boundaries against emotional contagion.   The Science of Seduction Ok, let's dive into seduction - one way to think about emotional contagion is through the lens of seduction.   The science of seduction is an intriguing and complex subject that has been studied extensively by psychologists in both its positive and negative forms.   It involves understanding emotional contagion, emotional intelligence, and the power of emotions to influence relationships.   By understanding the science of seduction on a deeper level, we can use it to create a healthier environment for ourselves and our loved ones and also dodge bad relationship bullets!   Seduction, it's not always a bad thing. Sometimes it can be really good but it is a complex and often misunderstood art.   Understanding healthy seduction can help us create healthier environments for ourselves and our loved ones by enabling us to better connect with authentic people and form trustworthy long-lasting emotional bonds.   Emotional contagion is an important part of the science of seduction – it's when we catch or “absorb” another person's lustful or sexual projections onto us - just by being around them or interacting with them.   Seduction can be voluntary or involuntary, just like our breath.   Many people enjoy consciously being seduced while, unfortunately, many people who have unhealed wounds, attract unconscious, seduction.   Emotional intelligence really helps us here - it helps us understand how our own feelings and boundaries affect those around us so that we can use this knowledge to build stronger relationships with ourselves and others.   How do you know if you're being seduced? Seduction can be a powerful tool for emotional connection and relationship building, but it can also be used to manipulate and control people.   Dark seduction techniques involve emotional manipulation, coercion, and even emotional abuse in order to get what the perpetrator wants from their target.   Protecting yourself from dark seduction requires you to recognize the signs of emotional manipulation, develop healthy boundaries and maintain emotional self-awareness.   Emotional Power & Manipulation Recognizing the signs of emotional manipulation is key when it comes to protecting yourself from dark seduction.   This could include someone attempting to guilt trip or shame you into doing something they want or trying to make you feel bad about your choices or decisions.   It's important to trust your instincts if something doesn't feel right – don't let anyone pressure you into doing anything that makes you uncomfortable or unsafe.   Developing healthy boundaries is another way of protecting yourself against dark seduction tactics. Healthy boundaries are necessary for any kind of relationship – romantic, platonic or otherwise – as they help define how we expect others to treat us without allowing them too much control over our lives.   Setting limits on other people's behavior helps ensure that we remain in control of ourselves so that no one can take advantage of us.   Finally, understanding the power of emotions to influence relationships allows us to effectively manage difficult situations while still maintaining meaningful connections with our peers.   With these tools at hand, we can use seduction not only for romantic purposes but also for creating healthier environments where everyone benefits from strong emotional bonds and understanding communication between parties.   Gretchen Rubin's model of The Four Tendencies is an incredibly powerful concept that has been used in psychology, relationships, and everyday life.   It suggests that our emotional states are contagious, meaning that we can influence the emotional state of those around us simply by being present.   This idea has far-reaching implications for understanding how our emotions affect others and for improving empathy and emotional intelligence.   We've all experienced emotional contagion at one time or another – when we feel the emotions of those around us without realizing it.   Again as we've already discussed, emotional contagion occurs when we catch or “absorb” the emotional state of someone else just by being around them or interacting with them.   Then, in steps boundaries.   Creating Emotional Boundaries Creating emotional boundaries is an important part of healthy relationships, but it can be difficult to know how to set them.   The Gottman approach to emotional boundary setting is a powerful tool that can help couples create emotional safety in their relationship and foster greater connection.   This approach focuses on understanding each other's emotional needs, communicating clearly and effectively, taking responsibility for one's own feelings and emotions, and respecting each other's differences.   By using the Gottman approach to emotional boundary setting, couples can cultivate greater trust, intimacy, and understanding in their relationship.   The Power of Healthy Empathy Empathy is a powerful emotional capacity that allows us to understand and share the feelings of others, but it can also be used for harm.   It is important to understand when empathy has become unhealthy so we can protect our emotional wellbeing and the emotional safety of those around us.   Let's discover how to identify when empathy has gone too far and some strategies for creating emotional boundaries in relationships.   A prime example of when empathy goes too far is when a 3-year-old boy has been infected by the mind virus of gender dysphoria, either by scrolling on Instagram or seeing it on YouTube from the demonic energies that troll for innocence there.   Instead of being a loving parent and letting the boy simply go through a process of maturation into adolescence and adulthood with loving guidance and firm boundaries around the biology of that child, unfortunately, an unhealthy, distorted version of empathy would allow that child to actually begin to think that they are the opposite gender of how they were born, which then would lead to even more serious mental health ramifications down the road which we see playing out in the world at large right now.   So in other words, when empathy goes too far a helping hand actually harms someone else or yourself which in this case with gender dysphoria, you can see how this is absolutely tragic.   A great podcast to listen to about this is the episode we did with JP Sears you can find that at JoshTrent.com/463   Having empathy is a powerful emotional capacity that allows us to understand and share the feelings of others.   It can be used for good or evil, so it's important to learn how to have a healthy version of empathy in order to build strong relationships with those around us and create emotional safety.   But when empathy has gone too far? Look no further than how emotional contagion affects our behavior, relationships, and everyday life by understanding the biology of belief.   The Biology of Belief The concept of the Biology of Belief is based on the idea that our beliefs about ourselves and the world around us have a powerful effect on our emotional and physical health.   It suggests that our beliefs shape our biology by literally changing how our cells and genes are expressed. The power of this concept lies in its potential to improve mental and emotional wellbeing as well as physical health. Our beliefs act like scripts that shape our behavior, emotional states, and the way we experience life.   When it comes to emotional contagion, we can use these scripts to create positive emotional states in ourselves and in those around us. Positive emotions lead to increased empathy, emotional intelligence, and emotional safety within relationships.   The Biology of Belief suggests that when we change or release old belief patterns, we can create new patterns of behavior which ultimately result in improved emotional and physical health.   Our thoughts contain energy which has an influence on both our outer environment and on the inner workings of our body's cells.   Recent scientific studies show that when we make conscious efforts to think positively about ourselves, others, or situations in general – rather than focusing on the negative – we can actually increase levels of dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins (the “happy hormones”) in the brain which help reduce stress levels, improve moods, and promote overall wellbeing.   This is also widely known as the science of how thoughts become things otherwise known as psychoneuroimmunology.   Biology + Neurochemicals When it comes to emotional contagion, this means that if one person projects positive emotions such as joy or peace onto another person, they could be influencing their neurochemistry by helping them feel relaxed or content.   Similarly, if someone projects fearful emotions onto another person they could be creating a more anxious neurochemical state in that person by causing them to feel fear or worry even if there is no immediate danger present.   In addition to influencing neurochemistry through emotional contagion, the Biology of Belief also suggests that we can use visualization techniques such as meditation or guided imagery to mentally create positive outcomes for ourselves or those around us by sending out waves of energy into the universe which create opportunities for healing effects both at a physical level and an emotional level.   This practice helps us tap into greater self-awareness so we can identify unhelpful thought patterns which may need releasing as well as helpful thought patterns that need reinforcing – ultimately leading to improved mental and emotional wellbeing.   Ultimately, understanding how beliefs shape our biology through emotional contagion helps us become more aware of how quickly emotions can spread from one person to another so we can take steps towards cultivating healthier connections with those around us for greater mental wellness.   With this knowledge, we are empowered with the ability to make conscious decisions about how best to nourish ourselves emotionally so we can live fuller lives with more meaningful connections with those who matter most! You can focus on every day, one breath, one inch at a time to have the best life you could ever imagine. And my life is the result of that so if you're wondering why should you listen to me well take a look at the website and see what I've been creating since 2015 after I left the fitness industry and dove heart and soul into wellness and podcasting. Multiple six figures of income and a family and a thriving business and all my results speak for themselves. So if you ever want to know if you should listen to someone, look at the life they're living and ask yourself: "Do I want all or some of their life?" If you yourself are a coach or trainer or therapist, or anyone at all that either wants different results in your life or wants to love yourself more deeply or be of service to your clients and your customers this podcast has the potential to change your life. It has been said that "as above, so below", and the soul must connect to and live inside the heart and mostly get out of the mind, but yet, the mind and the heart cannot survive without the physical body. It is the foundation it is the being that we inhabit. It is the only thing we all express from, so the physical takes a very important place in the pentagon, which is why I always start with the physical. It is the floor, it is the root, it is the foundation of all things included in your physical wellness. It is your breath, work, hydration, nutrition, movement, digestion, immunity, and anything and everything that relates to motion, respiration, assimilation, and processing. It is where the brain lives. It is where the heart beats. It is where your blood flows. One thing to really pay attention to when it comes to your physical aspect of the pentagon is to make sure every single day that you take 5, 10, 15, or 30 minutes to consciously breathe and move your body. Now, I know that seems easy you're probably listening to this and saying "Well duh, of course, I need to move my body, of course." but here's the question: are you doing it? Are you placing it in your calendar to make it a priority to consciously breathe like we do in the Breath + Wellness program or move your body out in the arms of nature? I don't care if it's in your freaking hotel room on a 5 or 10-minute break from work, or if you're wearing a tie or dress shirt. None of this matters. Notice that when it comes to nourishing your physical body, the mind will sometimes tell you that it's "not the right time "but it is always the right time to breathe consciously and move consciously. Otherwise, you will be in the control of your unconscious. And your unconscious always wants to rest, always wants to eat the chocolate cake, always wants to chill and take it easy because that is where it feels safe and it does not have to grow and it does not have to do anything that your heart is directing you towards. We'll talk more about heart intelligence when it comes to the spiritual aspect of your wellness. One quick step that I want you to take today if you take an inventory and you realize that from a physical standpoint, you may be carrying extra weight or you have pain or you're dealing with a health issue or you just don't feel well physically would be to take a breath and just be OK with the fact that you are where you are. Shame will not motivate you, or inspire you from this place only truth and acknowledgment of where you are is what will allow you to pick yourself up because no one's coming to save you. If you're struggling physically, make a time and financial investment to purchase a program, and hire a trainer to start with an external framework of accountability where you have to show up because you've paid for something or you have to show up for a workout or a hike or run or exercise with a friend because you don't want to let them down. Sometimes when it comes to stoking yourself physically, the subconscious mind and the neuroplasticity in the brain are so deep that a human being can believe the story that their physical health is not as important as it truly is, and it is these bullshit stories that create terrible results which make people feel stuck. As we close this short teaching about the physical aspect of your wellness, take stock of how you feel that is going to be the biggest report card about what needs to be changed when it comes to your physical health. It may seem hard, but that is just your subconscious mind creating a story that it's going to be. Taking a walk for most of us is not hard, touching your toes, doing 30 deep breaths, walking up some stairs instead of the elevator, and taking 5 minutes to do some burpees or push-ups or squats is not hard. It's not. It's just that the stories the subconscious mind has been projecting for decades may be telling you that it is. So to get over the story, take accountability to change your story by changing something that you are accountable to someone or something. Maybe it's money, maybe it's time, maybe it's a friend. This is what makes all the difference. I truly believe this, I used to be 280 pounds. And this is by far (in order of importance) the second most important thing that you must focus on if you want your physical, spiritual, emotional, and financial wellness to thrive and to be different than how it is today. That's what we all want, isn't it? We all want to reach our potential in all five of these things, but the reason we don't is that we believe stories about why we can't, so let's change that story right here, right now. When it comes to mental health, there are core aspects of the brain, health, cognition, mindfulness, and neuroplasticity that absolutely must be addressed here, and obviously today in this solocast, we are simply identifying and taking a quick inventory with an actionable step for each one today. Obviously, every one of these five sides is a lifetime of work and study but to simplify it because I told you, I would do that, to simplify it every single section in our five sections today will have an inventory identification process, and an actionable step that you can take to get a result right away because results matter results create momentum. In a mental and also emotional inventory, we must identify the stories that we are telling ourselves or the stories that we believe about other people or events or things that are dictating. A quick mental inventory of your belief systems is the only place to start, to start at self-awareness. For example, if you notice that you are quick to judge or quick to anger, it is not just an emotional program that is running. It is a mental program. The only way we can identify that mental program is through increased awareness and I have found that the most powerful tool for increased awareness is to be still. But how do we just choose to be still when we're triggered or when we are at our most mentally stressed? I would argue to say that that's not the best time for you to do it if you're just starting on your journey. If you're a seasoned veteran, maybe that might be the ultimate ninja training for you, but for most of us the best time to be still is first thing in the morning or when you go to bed at night. These are the times when in the morning you can prime your mind we talk about this in the M21 three-week guide that I'm giving to you for free at JoshTrent.com/M21. And the best way to prime your mind is by consciously breathing, followed by bulleting the subconscious mind. Once you have identified the thoughts that you allow yourself to think, the thoughts that you attached to that is in my opinion, the origin of mental health, true mental health comes from true self-awareness. In the bullet journal system that we talk about in the M21 guide you begin by: writing the date of the day the three things you're grateful for the three goals you have for that day the three affirmations and the final question that is the most powerful is who do I get to be today? Who do I get to be today? I know this might sound easy or too simplistic but this is the only way that I have improved my life and created multiple six figures with a woman I love and a family. Do you want one or all of those things? It is my promise to you that the more you do this, the more you bullet, your subconscious mind, the greater mental health you will have, and that mental health will transfer to every other part of your pentagon that is my promise to you. Just a quick note on mental health and psychedelics because it's important. "Just because we can do something, does not mean that we should." The intrusive thoughts we have (not that we are) are designed to keep you safe, in a box, and protected from the risk of freedom and love. One powerful and very quick way to take an inventory of your emotional state is to do what I like to call the emotional inventory or the EI2 process. It's what I'm writing my book on and I think that my life is a byproduct of its expression in me and I know and trust that the way you are with yourself and others has a direct connection to what you have experienced in your life out of the womb, inside the womb, and what you have been imprinted with from your mother, grandparents, great grandparents, going back as far as five generations, or even more. We talk about this concept of "the work "so much and personal development and self-growth but what is it exactly, what is the work? The work is about developing a practice of letting go as an antidote to the wounded self that tirelessly tries to control, and finding the faith and courage to take the risk of opening your heart with your loving, present, available self + partner. The anima and animus are described in Carl Jung's school of analytical psychology as part of his theory of the collective unconscious. Aristotle decided that "Nature abhors a vacuum". Jung described the animus as the unconscious masculine side of a woman, and the anima as the unconscious feminine side of a man, each transcending the personal psyche. Jung's theory states that the anima and animus are the two primary anthropomorphic archetypes of the unconscious mind, as opposed to the theriomorphic and inferior function of the shadow archetypes. He believed they are the abstract symbol sets that formulate the archetype of the self. Once you know how you operate and what you want to operate differently, you can change it but until then you will be repeating over and over again the same triggers, and the same stories that give the same results. If you want new results and I know you do because I have definitely struggled with this concept in my lifetime, I will share with you that the only thing that made a difference was increased awareness and increased inventory. Religion has trained the world to worship something outside of themselves, and I do believe that there are positive aspects of religion but unfortunately, just like any tool religion has been used to help and harm people for millennia. Traditional Christians, Jewish Islam, and many others do not want to face the fact that in the religious texts, there are many phrases and stories that point to God being inside the human. It is easy to pontificate that there is no meeting to anything so what's the point but that is actually the most powerful part of our human existence is that there aren't any meetings of all this, there really aren't. The one take away, and one challenge that I want to offer to your heart and your hands when it comes to spirituality is this: Can you search way deep down inside yourself blow all the layers of conditioning, below all the layers of shame, or judgment, or stories that you've chosen to believe about yourself or others or the world, and can you find a place where there is absolutely no mental chatter and there is only love? Do that tomorrow morning or even tonight. Sit in your stillness with your breath and no distractions and see if you can find that place I'm talking about. RUMI said something like this: "Beyond the field of right and wrong, there is a field. I will meet you there." Do not concern if you don't know what I'm talking about because going on a spiritual journey is not for everyone, it is not for the victims. It is only for the victors because, at the end of the tunnel, you will find something that is so profound, and so loving, that nothing else will matter. You will find God's love. You have to be prepared for the price to be paid to feel and be in the presence and acceptance of God's love because it will not be like anything you ever thought it was, it will only be exactly what it is. Every Thursday I release a solocast, where I share my mental musings, my pontifications, and my passions about something inside of our wellness pentagon, the mental physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial ways of being, tools, and resources that can actually help us move the needle on the ground here with us in the 3-D planet earth. There's a lot of content on the Internet and here on Spotify and Apple that really commoditizes spirituality, but it is my promise to deliver to you today zero appropriation or commoditization and 100% value when it comes to how to identify if you yourself or someone in your life is in need of a rite of passage, what the significance in the meaning of a rite of passage is for both men and women, and lastly, what your ancestors are trying to tell you sometimes with a whisper, and sometimes with a sledgehammer in the stages of your life.   [02:18] Traditional Rite Of Passage So let's begin. What exactly is a rite of passage and why is it important for you to know? “The critical problems of becoming male and female, relations within the family, and passing into old age, are directly related to the devices which the society offers the individual to help him achieve the new adjustment.” - Arnold Van Gennep, The Rites of Passage, 1908. Throughout human history, rites of passage have functioned as a tool of maturation for individual renewal and cultural cohesion. To contrast, it is the modernity of western society that provides little to no structure whatsoever for transitioning from one life phase to the next. As a result, without access to solid rituals, young people are desolate, lost, and confused about how to move in a conscious and confident way into the responsibility of being an adult. A right of passage is characterized by three distinct phases that follow Joseph Campbell is hero's journey. The first is separation, where you leave the familiar the next is transition or initiation, which is a time of testing learning and uncomfortable growth, and lastly, the return, which is the incorporation and integration of lessons learned to share with family, friends, and community. Traditionally, a rite of passage is a ritual event that marks a human's transition between childhood and adulthood connection to themselves and to a tribe or social group. A few examples of a right of passage could be an African lion hunt, the ancient Spartans, as seen in the film 300, land diving, which is done by the tribes in the Pacific islands, as well as a bullet ant glove of Brazil, where the Amazonian tribes perform an initiation ritual, forcing young men to place their hands into gloves, filled with hundreds and hundreds of bullet ants for 20 times more pain than being stung by a wasp. Another example could be taking a daughter or son to kill their first animal in a sacred way like a deer elk or moose hunt. And lastly, there is in my opinion, nothing more powerful for us here in the United States than a Vision Quest that is inspired by Native American traditions. Which is 10 days long with 3 days upfront of ego shedding, and intention setting, followed by 100+ hours of fasting completely alone in nature with zero distractions, that's right – no Food no Fire no tent no phone no electronics no writing absolutely nothing besides, you, water, and your breath and thoughts.   [05:55] Women's Right Of Passage So now that we have explored the different aspects and definitions of a right of passage, let's talk about how this right of passage applies to women as well. Obviously, there is the beginning of menstruation or in the Mexican culture, they have the Quinceanera, the celebration of a girl's 15th birthday, marking her passage from girlhood to womanhood. But how often do mothers give that to daughters in the western Caucasian culture? Across the world, the feminine traditions of separation, initiation, and return, have been replaced with magazines and social media, and the comparison of young girls' bodies to movie stars. Our traditions and rituals for women have been replaced with comparison and shame by the mass media, so that women can be monetized and shamed about the way their body looks or if they actually want to be a mother. So, how to identify if you yourself, or someone in your life is in need of a rite of passage? Here are the behaviors to look out for in young men, and unfortunately, even older men who themselves were never taught by their fathers or tribe how to go through a heroes journey of rite of passage: They exhibit a "high chair tyrant" archetype, where nothing could be delivered to them, fast enough, or get enough. You'll know these people when they hide behind a cloak of perfection, and their demands on others are articulated with intensity and anger. Next is that they seem lost in their career or purpose, easily switching from one thing to the next, and never staying still for too long. Their lives are filled with instant gratification, and as soon as things get challenging, they quit or turn the cheek the other way. They have no sense of honor for themselves, they suffer from low self-worth or even self-hatred. They long for positive male figure role models, or female, figure role models, and they project their mother or father wounding onto these role models, unconsciously. Lastly, a symptom of a human being in need of a right of passage is a deep well of hurt in their soul, and the longing for connection to a higher power, to the creator.   [09:59] Native Americans And Their Right Of Passage Traditions Now that you know the symptoms and the definition in regards to the right of passage, what is the solution, how does a human being take action, and place themself in the fire for a coming-of-age tradition otherwise known as a right of passage? Well, first, you must listen to what your ancestors are trying to tell you. For thousands of years, our ancestors have left written, artistic, and even in the past hundreds of years, music and recorded voices that all point towards the clues of how to live life well. But living life well when you are a child, it's different than living life well, when you are an adolescent, teenager, young adult, adult, middle age, elder, and senior. All of these life phases have unique and potent lessons of growth and wisdom if a human being is following the map of how to absorb integrate, and embody the wisdom that our ancestors are sharing with us. Across the world, there are many many clues that our ancestors have given us, but just for simplicity's sake, I will focus on the wisdom of the Native American elders, as an example of what our ancestors are trying to tell us... As I mentioned before a vision quest is a right of passage in some Native American cultures. It is typically only done by young males entering adulthood, but we have seen a resurgence because of the atrophy of young women's traditions around entering womanhood, there are many women who embark on Vision Quest as well. Here are the clues, the lessons, and what our ancestors are, trying to tell us spoken through the four Native American values Harmony with nature, the endurance of suffering, respect and non-interference towards others, and a strong belief that man is inherently good and should be respected for his decisions. Native American values lean toward a cosmic identity, a harmony of the individual with the tribe, the tribe with the land, and the land with the spirit of the universe. Central to this quest for harmony is a sense of constancy – the timelessness and predictability of nature as the foundation of existence. This cycle symbolizes eternity- one reality, and it transcends everything in its absoluteness, giving respect to everything. So these whispers, and sometimes the sledgehammers that come, not just from the Native American values, but also from the European, and basically in every continent of the world, the values of our ancestors are always around us if we can be still enough to hear them. Here are some signs that it is time for you, yourself, or someone you know to embark upon a rite of passage, whether they are 13, 15, 55, or 65 there is never a wrong time to embark upon a right of passage. If you cannot remember the last time, you spent time by yourself, or time by yourself in nature, and even the thought of you, being in nature, makes you feel uncomfortable, or brings up fear, it is time for your rite of passage. When you hear the word family, you get uncomfortable or you have a view of what a family actually is, or when you do your emotional inventory process if the sound of the word family makes you angry or sad, it is time to do a rite of passage. If you only are working for retirement, and the thought of working for a purpose is completely foreign to you, it is time to do it right of passage. If you are a hard follower of rules, and you never push your edge, and always be a good little boy, or a good little girl, if you have no idea about the thrill of breaking rules, or the thought of breaking rules, or even questioning authority, scares you, it is time to embark upon a right of passage. And lastly, if you are focused on the youth and you compare yourself to how life was 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 years ago if you find yourself melancholy and dwelling on the past on a regular basis, and you were unhappy with your present moment and you just can't seem to snap yourself out of depression, or anxiety, it is absolutely 100% time to embark upon a right of passage.   [15:22] A Message To Your Subconscious Mind My intention with this solocast was to speak to a deep place in your heart to talk to your subconscious mind to connect with a part of your soul that I have been disconnected myself from many times in life. Whether you're hearing this live on the day it's published or years from now, it still has the same weight and the capacity to uplevel and change your life. That is my promise that by the end of this solocast, I'm going to give you an actionable guide, as well as some science and spirituality behind self-sabotage, why we do it, and how we stop the cycle. How do we unhinge from the very thing that we know is causing us pain but we just aren't aware of what the root of that thing actually is? Well, it may seem shocking some people undermined their own good intentions and long-term success goals because self-sabotage occurs in the shadows when people hinder their own success, and take destructive steps without actually knowing it. Maybe some deeper part of them knows it because their harmful behavior shows up as the results of their lives with negative impacts in nearly every part of their existence, including money, relationships, career health... You name it. Self-sabotage shows up in so many deleterious ways.   [01:15] Unconscious Destructive Behaviour So first, let's go over why people self-sabotage. People, unconsciously block their progress for so many different types of reasons. They may consciously or unconsciously commit these acts of self-sabotage and the causes range from childhood issues, epigenetics, emotional epigenetics, prior relationships, and heartbreak essentially all the ways that the ego that is wounded tries to stay safe. Other reasons for this destructive behavior stems from low self-esteem, or a sense of not being good enough and coping with cognitive dissonance, which I'll go into in a moment. So if we know what we want and we know what we don't want, then why is there a disconnect between our embodiment of how we show up in the world, and the results of our life? In other words, if we know what we don't want and what we do want then why do we continue to receive what we don't? Well, I will share with you that people who self-sabotage may be aware of their actions, for example, somebody who is overweight and on a diet might consciously sabotage their efforts by eating a whole chocolate cake or staying up till 4 AM, and then eating a whole pizza. Or they might act from an unconscious place where they miss a work deadline which on the surface it seems like they were running late, but the truth is they are afraid of failure, so the human being self-sabotage is by unconsciously missing the due date and bypasses their goal to advance in the company. Difficult childhood growing up in a dysfunctional family can contribute towards a proclivity towards self-sabotage. We act out unconsciously what we see from our parents so without a secure attachment style you might have an ambivalent or vacillation or avoidant attachment style. It's because our earliest engagement and lessons from our parents and caregivers drastically impacted how we connect to ourselves and others. Take an inventory right now, take a deep breath. There's something that you wanted from the solocast and this is the core of how you get it. Question: Did your parents tell you growing up that you'll never amount to much or that you're not good enough or did you have people in your life when you were growing up especially ages 3 through 7, but even 7 through 18, those are the very formative years where neuroplasticity and neurogenesis are in full speed from a brain perspective. In childhood, we are delicate like a rose and require water, sunlight, and nourishment, and if we don't get that emotionally, physically, spiritually, and mentally, then unconsciously, we will act out the exact situations in childhood from an unconscious space until they get healed.   [04:32] Relationships And Self Sabotage Here's your first action step: take an emotional inventory. I've talked about this in-depth on the Hypervigilance Solocast, which you can access at JoshTrent.com/490, and also the Emotional Epigenetics Solocast a JoshTrent.com/499 these are two huge scaffoldings that will help you understand this podcast and give you more context on what I am teaching today. Another core root of self-sabotage has been difficult relationships. For example, if your ex-partner consistently put you down, you still might feel bruised or broken in this way. Based on a recent scientific study on self-sabotage from Cambridge University, psychologists who specialized in intimate relationships in Australia identified the main issues for the recurrence of self-sabotage in romantic relationships. The reasons included insecure attachment style, low self-worth, the fear of having their heart broken, fear of commitment, unhealthy, toxic beliefs about relationships, they learn from their parents and society, and coping problems when it relates to matters of the heart. And, lastly, at the root is cognitive dissonance or the mental discomfort that a human being may have when they hold two conflicting ideas at the same time. Humans are pleasure-seeking, and pain-avoidant creatures, who like to have consistency between their beliefs and actions. As an example, if you marry someone you love, but you come from a dysfunctional family where your dad left and your mother went from one abusive stepfather or boyfriend to another… You unconsciously, don't believe in a stable, loving marriage yet continue to plan the wedding and send invitations. Here's another example related to work when it comes to cognitive dissonance. You are about to land a huge client and earn the most money you've ever earned but rather than do what it takes to close the deal you hold yourself back because you don't feel worthy. You might even get drunk the night before or miss the meeting with the potential client completely, and rather than of had to take action to literally shoot yourself in the foot, because on a deep level, you don't feel worthy. Self-sabotage leads to chronic struggles with sex, pornography, drugs, food, alcohol, gambling, shopping, workaholism, and even self-injury. This destructive behavior has topical roots to exactly what we will talk about next.   [08:31] Procrastination + Perfectionism Now that we've gone over the science of self-sabotage, let's talk about procrastination and perfectionism, which are really equally deleterious and equally challenging to hold. It has been said that perfectionism is really just a trauma response. A great resource for this is if you head over to JoshTrent.com/461, where I can quote Dr. Wendy Myers: "For many people, perfectionism is a response to trauma. It's not that you just want to do everything perfectly. It's a defense mechanism we create, which can lead to a negative mindset and a constant inner critic." Holding oneself to an impossible standard causes delays in setbacks. Well, it seems like such a positive thing to aim for things to go as planned without any problems, perfectionism is really a belief that if you're seen as imperfect, then you won't be loved. And that's at the bottom of it for me and for all of us. Then there's procrastination, procrastination is a way you show others you're never ready and put off taking your time and being mindful until the last second so you can get that huge rush of energy because really you don't trust yourself to do it without a state of stress. I can see from my own journey with procrastination. It really came from me not feeling that I could handle at all without the stress hormones that drove me to push me beyond my beliefs, and it wasn't until I got down to the core beliefs that if I didn't make as much money as my father than I wouldn't be loved or if I didn't look a certain way physically, then I wouldn't be excepted or sexually attractive all of these things… They lead to procrastination because it is the unconscious projection of the self into the conscious action. [10:38] How To Stop The Self-Sabotage Cycle Now let's break down the spirituality. Whether you believe in past life regression or epigenetic emotional transfer, where five generations of mice have been proven in scientific studies to exhibit trauma-based behavior, you have to realize that in this lifetime there is so much more than you see. So your next action step when it comes to a spiritual inventory of why you self-sabotage, and how to stop the cycle is to simply breathe and be still. You heard that right, breathe and be still. You're with me right now for a reason otherwise you would not be hearing my voice and so I'd like you to take three deep breaths with me. Now, after these three deep breaths, put your hand on your body where you feel the most pressure or tension, or discomfort. Maybe it's your hips, your glutes, your stomach, your throat, your forehead, your shoulders... Wherever you feel the most tension, go there right now and do three more deep breaths. Notice, the voice that I speaking to you is the same voice that is inside of you because you and I all come from the same place, the same creator of the same omnipresent, loving energy that has created all things and always has been. Let go of any dogmatism, religious training, spiritual or amygdala hijacking from the media, and just be with me right now take three more deep breaths. Notice, the only way you can stop a cycle from repeating is to have the courage to turn towards where the cycle comes from in the first place. And when it comes to spiritual inventory, the first place you must begin is at the altar of humility and forgiveness. Yes, people can treat self-sabotage by examining the root causes and stopping procrastination and looking at the bigger picture, and potentially even letting go of perfectionism as a coping mechanism for trauma. But the deeper more spiritual questions, you can ask right now in the stillness with your hand on your heart and the breath in your lungs is this. What is my self-sabotage wanting to teach me? (You may sit with this for moments or hours.) Is this feeling familiar? Have I felt this feeling before and can I go to the very first time I ever felt this feeling, right now? Can I trust myself to go to the very first time I ever felt this feeling right now? This memory, this event that you have been carrying for so long is asking for forgiveness and possibly asking for rest. In order to rest, you must lay something down, you must let go. What is it that you must let go of, and how can you ask the creator to give you the courage to let it go? What the heck is vibration? Today on Solocast, I'm going to answer that question in depth and so much more. As I talk about the true essence behind frequency. We all know about the levels of consciousness that we've heard about with the lower self-being 20 resonating shame or 1,000 for consciousness when you look at David Hawkins's work. But beyond Hawkins's work in the levels of consciousness, what does it mean when your nervous system, your mind, and really the essence of your soul get a good gut feeling or a bad guy feeling about a person, place, or thing? By the end of the Solocast, my promise to you is that you'll have a true understanding of Hawkins's levels of consciousness, how this relates to your own personal life, and most importantly what you can do with this concept of vibration to bring you more fulfillment in the five aspects of your wellness pentagon. If you're joining us for the first time, this may or may not be the best place for you to start you can check out our full guest interviews every Tuesday and on Thursdays, we do this Solocast, which is like the mental musings where I get to pontificate and project all the things that I am fascinated about when it comes to wellness. So if you're a wellness dork or if you're an enthusiast like me, every single episode on Thursday is going to be really really good because it's just me going forward with notes and kind of off-the-cuff, really authentic, sometimes vulnerable. I've cried in a few Solocasts, which is a good thing, especially for men.   [01:50] Emotional Frequency Scale So you heard that right? Everybody has a vibe that impacts us. What does frequency actually mean? Are you aware that in the world the globe vibrates at a hertz frequency that's either subtle, imperceptible, or corresponds to an individual vibration? Sometimes unnoticeable. You read that correctly. Everybody has a basal metabolic rate (BMR) and the rest but when life events occurred, and emotions are involved this vibrational rate changes dramatically and quickly. So, just like a child, which is the best way to learn; approach things with a heart and mind of a child, and as an adult with your own life experience, the big question for me is when it comes to frequency or emotional frequency: What is the missing link between heart rate variability, resting metabolic rate, otherwise known as RMR, and vibration to create vibrant health? Essentially, what can we learn about heart rate variability, resting metabolic rate, and the emotional frequency scale, or vibration in order for us to connect the dots and create better health from how our emotions dictate, and vice versa, our physiology? The snake eating its tail... Due to its potential to really make you a better version of yourself, it's crucial to comprehend the emotional frequency chart. Let's talk about this, I'm going to reference this at JoshTrent.com/504. There is a map here from nondualitylife.com to give them credit, it is a wonderful map. At the bottom of it is shame, at the top, it is full consciousness. What does that really mean? It means that every emotion has a frequency that it vibrates at and that we experience. In other words, a level of consciousness. I believe that Hawkins measured this in consciousness but you and I can also measure this in hertz. Hertz is something that tracks how many times something moves in one second. We've all heard about the Schumann resonance, or 432 frequency, or 556. There are many different frequencies that are used for Binaural Beats and Isochronic technology for giving people relaxation and the nervous system through sound. But how does understanding the emotional frequency chart help you become a better you? In today's society, people really aren't taught important life skills. Definitely not in school, and sometimes not at home, except for in our homes because you and I are very conscious so we do teach emotional frequency. And I'm going to unpack the layers of this today but a bigger question rises here as we pause.   [04:40] David Hawkins + Expression Of Our True Nature Now that you know the frequency chart from Hawkins and you understand that this level of consciousness can go all the way down to 20 Hz or 20 vibrations per second to 1000 vibrations per second for, a consciousness. What do all the stages between 20 and 1,000 truly mean? The victim abuse or consciousness from 20 Hz all the way to 200 the self-empowerment from 250 all the way to 400. And of course, the self-realization from 440 all the way to 1,000 is what allows people to go from hell to purgatory in between paradise and heaven. This is the conceptual framework that was developed by David Hawkins MD Ph.D. after a ton of research over 40 years of research. It looks at various mental states and psychological states as they connect to, and corresponds to the different levels of consciousness from 20 to 1,000. The approach is not very new anymore but it was new when it first came out. It is very much in line with the current wisdom traditions where higher levels of consciousness are used to correspondingly connect to greater psychological integration, and really just harmony with life. This conceptual approach delineates how one moves from the lower self or the smaller self. The lower one takes more scarcity-based states of consciousness to a higher self, or what Hawkins calls the absolute high. And through this journey, various conditionings, some scars along with different impurities, start to melt away. In the process really dismantles and purifies human beings allowing for a greater expression of our true nature, the level of the human. The model is an expression of the relative, so it is not to be taken as the expression of absolute truth, because we fluctuate through this level of consciousness, all day long. There are certain people, though that have certain characteristics of always being negative, always vibrating down at the victim consciousness, and we feel tired because I know you can relate to this when we are in their presence.   [06:57] Resting Metabolic Rate We know that the resting metabolic rate is a number that dictates how many calories a human being will consume completely at rest with no fidgeting, no exercise, just if you were to sit on the couch for the entire day, sleep, eat food, drink water, and literally not lift a finger for an entire 24 hour period. That would be your resting metabolic rate. So what is it that dictates are resting metabolic rate? Well, science would say it's your height, weight, age, gender, ethnicity, diet, activity level, and muscle... But I also believe that the thermic effect of food and a concept called the non-exercise movement or non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT), which is fascinating. This is knowledge from my old personal training days… So to calculate RMR, you would essentially put your factors into a calculator and you get a caloric number somewhere around 2000 cal or so depending on your physiology. So the answer to this, and this is what I'm going to prove to you today on this podcast... if somebody eats a perfect caloric diet and they are exercising well and they're doing the mouth of calories in calories out with their RMR then why is it that people still don't lose weight or gain muscle? What I'm going to hypothesize today is that you trust the connection between emotional frequency, HRV, RMR, and how every single one of them affects one another.   [08:33] Heart Rate Variability Let's go into an HRV. Now that we've talked about RMR, HRV is heart rate variability. It is the amount of time in between the beats of your heart and sciences show that a greater score of HRV can be in prime indicator of how long you live, how healthy you'll be, and even four diseases and afflictions like CHD, diabetes, and so many more. So now that you know what HRV is what increases your HRV score? In other words, what gives you a more diverse score around HRV? With HRV being the measure of variations in between each heartbeat measured in time, this variation is controlled by a very ancient part of the nervous system, called the autonomic nervous system, otherwise known as the ANS. We've talked about the autonomic nervous system very in-depth in our BREATHE: Breath & Wellness program, which you can be a part of. This conversation is geared towards that because I believe it is the breath that can set you free, and it is the breath that can increase your HRV, support your RMR, and be the fuel for your emotional frequency scale. I think they all connect, and I'm going to prove that today. So if the autonomic nervous system is housed in two compartments, one being sympathetic, one being parasympathetic, otherwise known as relaxation or fight or flight on the other side, then the brain is constantly millions and millions and millions of times per day processing information in a part of your brain called the hypothalamus. Here are the keys of vibrational habits which I'm in a moment going to tie to emotional frequency and the Hawkins scale. Here are the low-frequency habits that are coming from scarcity, coming from potentially just hedonism or apathy that drive a very low HRV score. The first is poor sleep, followed by alcohol, then smoking cigarettes, low physical activity, stress management, excessive caffeine, very poor posture, and of course, eating a diet that is not organic, and also genetics. There are some people that have a positive or negative impact via HRV and we know the HRV tends to naturally go down as we get older, but it doesn't have to it absolutely does not have to. As I mention chronic health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, anxiety, depression, and pulmonary disease, all of these things even medication's that people are taking or if you live in hot climates. I live in Austin and I would guess that most people's HRV score is lower because it's a super hot climate and makes you think about where you wanna live, right?   [11:05] Low Frequency: Hypervigilance + Unprocessed Trauma So now that we've unpacked HRV and RMR, and we've given you the beginning of the frequency scale, let me pull this all together, my friend. You're really going to enjoy this. Bare with me, we're about to go deep because we store unfavorable feelings very deep. We follow instructions and perform as intended until the program is terminated, and a new one is installed, but by the time we reach adulthood, we have so many unresolved issues that the majority of our reactions are inherently negative. These reactions are then in charge of unfortunate circumstances. That simply serves to confirm what we "already knew" from the past and distracts us in a vicious loop of emotional incidents, most of which are based on long-forgotten recollections from the past. So essentially the frequency of experiences, the frequency of emotions that are unfavorable from the past are literally driving the current moment because the body doesn't know any different, the body is a minor connected to all of this and this is what leads to hypervigilance. So these feelings of being a victim, combined with the assessment of others, evaluating oneself in relation to others, or comparing yourself to other people, is really a nervous system's tool for analyzing vibration. In other words, we project onto others what we feel about ourselves. So if I feel hypervigilant or non-trusting I'm going to unconsciously project that onto the person in front of me or the situation in front of me, and then that affects clearly my HRV and absolutely my resting metabolic rate because I'm going to need more calories, I'm not going to sleep as well, and I'm going to be shifted over to my sympathetic more throughout the day, which is the opposite of what the nature intended. But it's only when we embark on a journey of searching for the way of loving techniques and information and tools that we can begin, letting go of the lower frequency of these lower emotional reactions. This is a path that involves our whole lives and has a direct connection to love and complementing ourselves every time we manage to overcome these, potentially stressful situations, but really, they're not because we are choosing based on our past conditioning to make them three for 10 times more stressful than they actually are. So let's bring it home. Here the emotional frequency chart and Hawkins's work show the hertz frequency rate of this vibrational analysis all the way from low emotions to high. As the rate of vibration goes lower the extent of consciousness as well, and this is very key, the ability to deal with situations or things in a positive way is drastically reduced, which limits our discernment to respond or be responsible, which I've talked about many times on this podcast there is a difference between responsibility and being response-able. So when we find ourselves stuck in the spiderweb of the frequencies, like grief and shame and lying and deceit, it might seem so difficult and almost impossible to overcome things. But look, in this world, we are very fortunate to be here with each other right now. You are part of the solution, the fact that you were even listening to the Solocast means you are already on the way, my friend. You are already on the way and you are going through it because the only way out is through. Your resolve and your intelligence that was up leveled today now that you understand the connection between HRV and RMR, the academic science terms, and the actual emotional signature and quotient of the frequency scale. Combine these two things, and understand that you are a soul having a human experience inside of a body, and the more you can dive in and understand the emotional frequency chart the less you can put down your Oura Ring, put down your Woop, put down all the things that track your HRV and track your sleep and track your stuff. Because you and I both know those are external mirrors of mindfulness and all they're already doing is reminding you about the way that you already feel. It is only when we look within without judgment, with compassion for ourselves, that we can let go of the negative emotional attachments that keep us bathing in scarcity. And bathing at the bottom of the victimhood in those lower emotions of 200 all the way down to 20.   [16:40] What Is Your Emotional Frequency? So here is the action plan. First, take an emotional inventory I talked about that at JoshTrent.com/490. Take the emotional inventory to identify what beliefs you have or what emotions you're experiencing and then write your number down after each one and see where you fall. Are you in the category of victim, abuse, or consciousness? Are you in the category of self-empowerment? Are you in the category of self-realization the majority of the time? A painfully skinny teenager, he felt insecure about his physique and his lack of muscle and strength. Fitness was a way for him to apply hard work and effort towards changing and re-inventing himself. A natural intellect, Sal devoured every fitness, physiology and nutrition publication he could get his hands on. His appetite for knowledge is voracious and he used his passion for learning to maximize his own body's potential. 4 years later Sal walked into his local 24 Hour Fitness gym and applied to be a personal trainer. He quickly became a top performer and, at the age of 19 was promoted to the position of general manager with as many as 40 employees working under him. During this period of time, Sal learned to master skills of sales, marketing, and communication and his gyms broke records in sales and production. At the age of 22, Sal became an entrepreneur. He opened a wellness and personal trainer facility that offered one on one training, massage therapy, nutritional counseling, hormone testing, and acupuncture. At the age of 28 Sals health took a bad turn.   Sal's Wellness Journey The years of training his own personal body with excessive amounts of intensity in the pursuit of more muscle combined with the abuse of supplements caused his body to rebel. He lost 15 lbs of muscle and at one point believed he may have an autoimmune disorder. This forced Sal to change his personal approach to fitness. He made health a priority and he visited his insecurities that caused him to abuse his body. It took him a full year of study and learning to transform yet again. Sal learned about gut health, hormone health and how to prioritize health over appearance. He healed his body and changed how he communicates fitness and health and was re-invigorated with a new sense of purpose. Although this was a challenging time for him, it is literally what formed his view on health and how he communicates it to this day.   MAPS Programming At 33 years old Sal met Doug Egge who became his client. They formed a close friendship and together they created the first Maps program. Sal was the designer of the workout plan and Doug created the marketing material behind it. Their goal was to shatter the failed muscle-building workout ideas that Sal had personally witnessed as entirely ineffective. They knew that MAPS programming would be vastly superior. Their challenge was how to bring this to the masses. 2 years later Sal met Adam and Justin and together with Doug they started Mind Pump. The goal with Mind Pump was simple... Bring quality fitness and health information to the masses with integrity and honesty. Sal wanted to shift the direction of the fitness industry from an aesthetic insecurity-based industry to a self-love and self-care health industry. He knew this could be accomplished with education through entertainment.
