Can you legally use music, TV clips, or radio audio in your podcast, or is it a fast track to takedowns and trouble? In this episode, we unpack how copyright actually works for podcasters. What fair use really means, why it is a legal defence rather than permission, and where creators most often get caught out. We look at the practical risks, including automated copyright detection, platform removals, and takedown requests from rights holders.A quick note before you listen: we are not lawyers. This episode is based on our experience and understanding of how copyright is applied in practice, not legal advice. If you plan to rely on a fair use defence, you should understand the risks involved and make that call deliberately. Our conversation also widens into modern podcasting workflows. We discuss why video podcasts still need to work as audio-first shows, how many “video listeners” are actually listening in the background, and how relying on visuals can quietly break the experience for most of your audience.MentionedWhere to Get Podcast MusicThe Maono PD200W Hybrid Mic (affiliate link)The One Essential Rule Video Podcasters Can't IgnoreGuardian piece on some video podcasts making for bad audio experiencesPodcraft is brought to you by Alitu and The Podcast Host
Podcast Host Jason Whitlock joins Sid to deliver an unfiltered critique of modern football culture, arguing the NFL has lost discipline, masculinity, and accountability in favor of celebration, tolerance, and image over fundamentals. The conversation expands into coaching and quarterback speculation around the Dolphins, Ravens, and Giants, before turning to the Minneapolis ICE shooting, where Whitlock offers a controversial perspective on race, policing, and media narratives. He also discusses faith, race, victimhood culture, and America's Judeo-Christian foundations, emphasizing personal responsibility and rejecting identity-based grievance politics, while closing with college football and NFL playoff predictions. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is SM Stevens, author of the book Beautiful and Terrible Things. S.M. Stevens began writing fiction during back-to-back health crises: a shattered pelvis and ovarian cancer. She writes contemporary novels designed to make readers laugh, cry, and think. Her most recent novel, Beautiful and Terrible Things, has won seven awards including Indies Today's Best Literary Book of 2024, and an Honorable Mention in the Social Issues category of the 2024 Readers' Favorite International Book Award Contest. Her novella The Wallace House of Pain won the 2023 American Fiction Award for Best Novelette, and First Place in the Short Fiction category of the Chanticleer International Book Awards. A lifelong New Englander other than stints in England and Italy, she lives in Washington, N.H. In my book review, I stated Beautiful and Terrible Things is a contemporary fiction by SM Stevens. We start by meeting Charley, a 29-year-old who believes she is cursed to lose everyone she loves. To combat this, she lives a very rigid and lonely life - until she meets Xander. He invites her to meet his band of diverse race, gender, and sexually oriented friends Terrance, Sunny, Jessica, and Buwan. Charley is a social misfit, but from the beginning, I was cheering her on. Her rigid schedule and self-harm made me want to wrap my arms around her and help her see it was going to be okay - when I wasn't stamping my feet because she was being ridiculous! Of course, I felt the same way about each of the friends. At times, they seemed to have their heads on straight - at others? Not so much. And isn't that just like me, you, and everyone we know? SM doesn't hold back. She brings in social components of our time including race and sexual orientation, but also mental health issues and green initiatives. With characters all along each of these spectrums, we are given the opportunity to see these topics from all sides - from those who live them to those who wonder if they really exist. We also get a glimpse into what we might do when we see something that isn't to our liking - and learn that there isn't just one way that is the right way. This is a wonderful story about friends and what that can look like despite different life experiences. I really enjoyed this book. Dr. Jenn Simmons joins the Biohacker Babes for a powerful and deeply personal conversation about her shift from conventional oncology to functional medicine after witnessing the impact of breast cancer in her own family. She pulls back the curtain on the limitations of traditional cancer care — especially the overreliance on mammograms — and explains why true prevention begins with metabolic health, lifestyle choices, informed patient advocacy, and other options for testing. Dr. Jenn challenges the profit-driven structure of the healthcare system and empowers listeners to question standard protocols, explore more predictive screening options like the Auria test, and reclaim responsibility for their wellbeing. This episode is a bold call to action for anyone ready to move beyond fear-based medicine and step into proactive, root-cause healing.Dr. Jenn Simmons is a breast surgeon, integrative oncologist, best-selling author, Podcast Host, 3x Summit host and founder of PerfeQtion Imaging. She began her career as Philadelphia's first fellowship-trained breast surgeon and spent 17 years at the forefront of breast oncology. Her own health crisis led her to discover functional medicine and a new framework for patient care—one focused on creating health rather than managing disease. In 2019, she left conventional medicine to establish Real Health MD, where she helps women on their breast cancer journey truly heal.Today, her mission is to transform the landscape of breast cancer detection and survivorship. Through innovations in functional imaging, hormone restoration, and integrative care, Dr. Simmons aims to revolutionize how we screen for breast cancer and to redefine longevity for all women, including those with a history of breast cancer.SHOW NOTES:0:40 Welcome to the podcast!2:06 About Dr. Jenn Simmons3:02 Welcome Dr. Jenn to the show!3:46 Her turning point from conventional care7:26 Dr. Mark Hyman & functional medicine9:45 Conventional whack-a-mole17:26 Dad's transition into Biological Dentistry20:19 Metabolic chaos in children23:45 Cholesterol & metabolic health32:25 Mammograms & radiation35:55 History & stats on mammography43:02 We all make cancer cells44:27 Diagnosis mindset46:33 Renee's screening53:28 Alternative screening options58:39 Perfeqtion Imaging centers1:00:04 The Galleri Test1:07:48 Changing the system1:10:24 Where to find her1:11:49 Her final piece of advice1:12:50 Thanks for tuning in!RESOURCES:Website: www.perfeqtionimaging.com, www.realhealthmd.comYouTube: @dr.jennsimmonsIG: @drjennsimmons Auria Tears Test - code: DRJENN20Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/biohacker-babes-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Our lives are a story of transitions, always closing one chapter and opening another. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is DJ Quinn, author of the book Stick Figures. Dennis ‘DJ' Quinn is a three-time Big Brother / Big Sisters volunteer and assists with mentor programs in the Pierce County WA Juvenile Court system. His honest and humorous writing style came to life during his editing and writing jobs for airline labor unions, lifestyle magazines, and real estate advertising. The second oldest of nine children raised in Helena, MT, he currently resides in Gig Harbor, WA. He is also the author of Raft Island Treasure Hunters, an adventure tale for young readers. In her book review Carole O'Neill stated: Stick Figures: A Big Brother Remembers is a memoir by D. J. Quinn. As he navigates between time with his Little Brother and his memories of those years, we unravel a happy, sad, guilty, loving, and grateful man who wishes he could have done more for his Little Brother. Quinn meets Betty who is the foster mother of his potential Little Brother in the caseworker's office. The meeting was set up to allow them to get to know each other and discuss the expectations of both. Mike is not the average candidate the organization tries to match. He didn't start talking until he was four and is in special education. He is an energetic seven-year-old who loves to swim but doesn't like to go to the mall. Within the first few outings, D.J. quickly discovers he and Mike like to talk about Santa, God, showgirls, and speech therapy. Above all, he is a gamer. Their time together always ended with a look at the calendar to make plans to meet the next time as they drew stick figures to document the time they just spent together. Mike looked forward to those drawings almost as much as the activities they enjoyed. During that time, they often were joined by D.J.'s partner and his Little Brother, Nate. The four of them found swimming off their boat to be one of their favorite pastimes. During their thirteen-year journey, we follow their intimate true story told with humor and compassion. The twists and turns of their relationship from Mike's time on the run, to his time in prison, and finally to his final days, we laugh, we cry and we applaud D.J. for taking the interest in a young boy who needed help to grow into a man. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Joseph Bolton, author of the book Old Grandmother's Tree. Joseph Bolton was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island during the twilight of the golden age of French-Canadian culture in New England. Growing up emersed in his mother's French-Canadian family, Joseph enjoyed hearing the stories told by his grandparents and great aunts of a mysterious and magical place called Québec, otherwise known as “the place we came from.” After high school, Joseph's adventurous nature led him to enlist in the U.S. Army and he served in the Army's airborne forces as a paratrooper jumping out of perfectly good airplanes, much to the worry of his mother. Although he originally intended to stay in the Army for two years, he was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point, and after graduating in 1989, he decided to make the Army a career. After West Point, Joseph graduated from the Army's Ranger Training School, a grueling and physically demanding combat leadership course. Over the next 18 years, Joseph served in the army in various positions of growing responsibilities culminating with a combat tour in Afghanistan as one of two Space Operations Officers with the US Army's 10th Mountain Division. Since he retired from the Army, Joseph has worked in various project manager roles as a civilian contractor for the U.S. Air Force. While writing Old Grandmother's Tree, Joseph took a sabbatical from the U.S. Air Force and taught mathematics to young students for a semester at Holy Family Academy in Gardner Massachusetts. He considers it the most fulfilling job he has ever had and hopes to return to teaching full-time in the near future. Bolton is of French-Canadian, Native American, Spanish, English, and Irish descent, and is profoundly inspired by the stories of his heritage. He lives with his wife in Massachusetts, and, in his free time, enjoys hiking and skiing through Québec and New England landscapes. His favorite places to go for outdoor adventure are the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts and Mont-Orford in Québec. When he is not writing, hiking, or skiing, Joseph enjoys reading about science, history, philosophy, mathematics, and worldwide mythologies. Old Grandmother's Tree is his first book. In my book review, I stated Old Grandmother's Tree is a series of historical fiction short stories written by Joseph Bolton. These stories are based on family stories and mixed with Canadian and French folktales - and the illustrations are incredible! I loved learning about Joseph's family and the stories he heard as a young child about a many times great grandmother who belonged to a native tribe and her marriage to a French soldier - and how this story reaches through the years to the present day. Along the way, we meet many family members, trickster animals, and Quebec as it was in the 17th century and is today. The trickster animals were favorites, especially since I've always loved the African and Native American fairy tales with such tricksters. I enjoy hearing how different cultures explain what can be unexplainable. I understand that there will be more - and I can't wait to get my hands on the second volume! Have you ever reached the end of a year and felt the urge to pause - not to rush ahead with goals and plans, but to really sit with what this chapter has held? As 2025 draws to a close, today's solo episode is a gentle invitation to reflect, integrate and intentionally open the door to what's next. This episode was inspired by my recent Align & Manifest workshop, where reflection was paired with sound healing - allowing insight to land not just in the mind, but in the body. What unfolded in that space reminded me how powerful it is to slow down, feel, and consciously close a chapter before stepping into a new one. Throughout this episode, I guide you through a series of reflective questions you can journal with, sit with, or simply let land - whether you're listening quietly at home or on the move. There's no pressure to do this “perfectly”; you can always return to these questions when the moment feels right. I also share my own reflections from the year - what felt heavy, what surprised me, what supported me, and what I'm consciously releasing - alongside how embodiment and sound have become an increasingly important part of how I support integration and growth. This is a soft, spacious episode designed to help you close 2025 with awareness, gratitude and self-trust - and step into 2026 from a grounded, intentional place rather than autopilot. Reflection Questions: What felt heavy or challenging for you in 2025 - and how can you honour that honestly? What supported you, surprised you, or felt good this year - even in small, quiet ways? What did 2025 teach you about yourself, and what are you ready to let go of as this chapter closes? Choose a feeling for the year ahead? Who are you becoming as you move into your next chapter? What are you ready to welcome more of in 2026? And finally, what is your word for 2026? Key Takeaways: Why pausing at the end of a year is an act of self-leadership, not avoidance Why choosing a feeling for the year ahead can be more powerful than rigid goals The role of sound healing in helping reflection integrate on a nervous system level Show Resources: Follow Emma, the Podcast Host on Instagram - HERE Learn More About 1:1 Coaching with Emma - HERE Book a FREE 30-minute Discovery Call with Emma - HERE Learn More About Emma's Book, Worthy and Wealthy - HERE If you loved this episode, I'd be so grateful if you shared it with someone who might need a gentle pause right now. Whitney Stropp is a podcast host, comedian, writer, and speaker, and the co-creator of Every Widow Thing, a show that has become a lifeline for people navigating grief, loss, and identity after the death of a spouse. She's also my co-host on our new podcast Anything But Mid, where we're rethinking midlife without the pressure to fix, optimize, or pretend everything is fine.In this conversation, Whitney and I talk honestly about grief, midlife, menopause, reinvention, and the unexpected role humor plays in surviving hard seasons. Whitney shares how losing her husband reshaped her worldview, why grief is not linear, and how laughter became both a coping mechanism and a bridge back to life.We also get real about the overwhelm of midlife wellness trends, the pressure to “optimize everything,” the fear of aging, and why this season can actually be the most expansive chapter yet. This episode is funny, raw, comforting, and deeply human — like a conversation you'd have with a close friend after the holidays when real life sets back in.What we talk about:Navigating grief without a “right” way to do itWhy humor can coexist with deep painReinventing yourself in midlifeThe freedom that comes with empty nesting and identity shiftsMenopause, brain fog, and body changes — without shameLetting go of the pressure to optimize everythingWhy “Anything But Mid” is about permission, not perfectionGratitude, perspective, and choosing the next chapter consciouslyPlease remember to rate, review, and follow the show – and share with a friend!Check out our new Comedy Wellness Podcast: Anything But Mid, cohosted with Whitney Stropp:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/anything-but-mid/id1849386215https://www.youtube.com/@AnythingButMidFind Amy's affiliates and discount codes: https://amyedwards.info/affiliatepageSky Rock Sedona: https://www.skyrocksedona.com/20% Discount Link:https://www.marriott.com/event-reservations/reservation-link.mi?id=1759866624184&key=CORP&app=resvlinkAll links: amyedwards.infoInstagram: @realamyedwardsFight For Her: fightforher.netTikTok: @themagicbabeYouTube: YouTube ChannelPodcast: The Amy Edwards Show PodcastFree Course: The Ageless MindsetFull Course: The Youthfulness HackWork with Amy: Book a Call Let's get you to your HAPPIEST and most RADIANT! After nearly 200,000 cold calls and a million auto-dialer calls, Stephen Oommen discovered something shocking: 98% of his revenue came from warm referrals. Today, he breaks down how sellers can turn relationships into predictable growth. In this episode, host Lyndsay Dowd sits down with Stephen Oommen, a 25-year go-to-market veteran, speaker, and author of the upcoming book The Referral Effect. Stephen shares why nearly 98% of his business revenue came from warm referrals, despite making hundreds of thousands of cold calls throughout his career. Stephen opens up about growing up as the child of immigrants in Oklahoma, navigating an identity crisis that ultimately became his superpower—the Chameleon Effect—his ability to adapt, connect, and create trust across any environment. That skill later became the foundation for his referral-based sales methodology. You'll learn: - Why executives don't respond to cold outreach—and what they do respond to - How to close the trust gap by scaling warm referrals - The "Magic Networking Question" that instantly upgrades your network - The 99 and 1 Principle for managing energy in sales and relationships - How leaders can balance intensity, kindness, and long-term legacy If you're a B2B seller, founder, GTM leader, or executive tired of low-yield outreach, this conversation will challenge how you think about networking, sales culture, and growth. Timestamps 00:00 – Introduction: Stephen Oommen, the Truth Teller. 02:22 – Stephen's Origin Story: From Bankruptcy to Corporate Success. 04:48 – The Chameleon Effect: Turning Identity Crisis into a Superpower. 10:39 – Cold Calls vs. Warm Referrals: The Efficiency vs. Effectiveness Debate. 16:54 – How to Start Networking: Nurturing and Activating Relationships. 19:16 – The Live Exercise: Asking the Right Questions to Build a Network. 22:50 – Using Qualifiers: Geography, Industry, and Title. 26:08 – The 99 and 1 Principle: Managing Energy in Sales. 30:04 – What Inspires Stephen: Growth, Contribution, and Laughter. 32:38 – Legacy: Kindness Character vs. Intense Personality. 35:00 – What's Next: Speaking Tours and The Referral Effect. About the Guest Stephen Oommen is a 25-year go-to-market veteran with experience spanning frontline sales to executive leadership. He has worked with startups and global enterprises including Microsoft, ADP, and Citibank. Stephen is the only speaker and trainer dedicated to helping B2B sellers solve the biggest challenge in modern sales: lack of access to decision makers. His work focuses on closing the trust gap by scaling the most successful method known—warm referrals. A successful entrepreneur and W2 employee ("entreployee"), Stephen has retired from corporate twice, paid off hundreds of thousands in non-mortgage debt, and is currently writing his book The Referral Effect. He believes legacy is built at the intersection of kindness, generosity, and laughter. Star Trek has found its new Bones and Sulu, yet we have to wait a while before we actually see them. The video game industry lost a true legend, and we salute everything Vince Zampella brought us. Marvel goes back to what it knows for Doomsday, and Macauly decides what is and isn't a Christmas Movie. Plus we may have to wait a little longer for 007's video game return.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jim Gulledge, author of the book Green Forest, Red Eath, Blue Sea. Jim Gulledge is the author of A Poor Man's Supper. The novella was selected for inclusion in the North Carolina Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill and the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection at Appalachian State University. Over the course of his academic training, Dr. Gulledge earned an A.B. degree in Christian education from Pfeiffer University, an M.A. in English from Clemson University and a DMin in theological studies from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. His career highlights included participation in the Adult Development Institute at Harvard University, the Fulbright German Administrators Exchange Program and the C.S Lewis Summer Residence program in Oxford, England. A life-long resident of the Carolinas, Jim and his wife, Linda, enjoy visiting with their four children and son-in-law and daily life with their miniature schnauzer, Luka. In my book review, I stated Green Forest, Red Earth, Blue Sea is a beautiful Southern fiction set of short stories. I fell instantly in love with these stories that take place in the state I call home - North Carolina. Each of the three stories takes place in a different part of the state and follow three connected families. The stories, though they take place during different times and in different places, stay connected through a family heirloom. Unlike most books I enjoy this one has many varied characters, so there isn't one character to fall in love with. Instead, readers fall in love with place. And Jim did an excellent job helping readers come to love North Carolina, from the green hills of the mountains to the red clay of the piedmont to the sandy shores of the ocean. I also enjoyed discovering how each family connected with one another and how they managed to cover the state in a few generations. We start in the mountains as trains bring change - meeting two young lovers whose time together is fleeting. Next, we find ourselves saving peaches from a deadly spring freeze. Can this couple eek out a living in the clay? The last story asks us to cheer for an orphan boy and the chance to find buried treasure against the backdrop of a tropical storm. And finally, catch a quick glimpse of a story yet to be told when a boy from the beach glimpses a girl from the mountains - and we feel that it will all start again. Jim tells a delightful series of stories, and you won't want to miss this book. It would make a great gift for any NC native! We talk about using AI as a sounding board rather than a generator, why “thinking walks” still matter, and how convenience can flatten creativity if you are not careful. There are practical lessons, too. We cover how to handle co-hosted interviews without talking over each other, what changed after a recent home studio move, including audio and lighting choices, and details of a new podcast launch challenge aimed at getting shows live in January.MentionedThe 2026 Podcast Launch Challenge7 Ways to Make Your Content Irresistibly Human in an AI AgeTour of Colin's Video Podcast SetupColin's Video Lighting (Affiliate Links)Neweer LED Panel LightsSoftbox AttachmentGrid AttachmentPhilips Hue Strip LightsPhilips Hue Go LightPodcraft is brought to you by Alitu and The Podcast Host

Welcome everyone to a very special Cops and Writers with my friend Ian Bick. Back in November, I visited Ian at his studio in Connecticut, where Ian interviewed me (That episode went live on 12-16-25 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/locked-in-with-ian-bick/id1662286355?i=1000741596571, https://open.spotify.com/episode/7EWrquIqAYL4z0FbW3xDE0?si=39oDYHc3SEGiwBT8udhxhw, https://youtu.be/aU5xLdhR_5s?si=Tdarr4_9xdd3p0mK) and he was gracious enough to let me interview him. First off, I have to thank the most awesome and legend in the law enforcement community, retired DEA Special Agent, Author, Podcast Host, Public Speaker, and all-around good guy, Steve Murphy, for the introduction. You may know Steve from the Netflix story, DEA Narcos, and his popular Game of Crimes Podcast. Ian Bick is an entrepreneur, storyteller, and host of the hit podcast Locked In with Ian Bick, where he explores real stories of incarceration, redemption, and the human capacity for change. His content has reached hundreds of millions of viewers across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Spotify. At 18, Ian became one of the youngest nightclub owners in the country. But the rapid success came with high pressure, debt, and a gambling addiction that led him to make destructive choices. At 21, he was convicted of federal wire fraud and served three years in federal prison. In January 2023, he launched Locked In with Ian Bick, a podcast that gives a platform to former inmates, law enforcement, attorneys, survivors, and others whose lives intersect with the criminal justice system. Today, the show has become one of the fastest-growing justice-focused podcasts in the country, known for its raw honesty, emotional depth, and willingness to go where most media won’t. Ian now speaks in prisons, schools, recovery programs, and reentry organizations across the United States, connecting with people who feel stuck or defined by their mistakes. His message is real and rooted in lived experience. It was such a pleasure getting to know Ian and his producer, Matt (Matty Ice). They rolled out the red carpet for me and made this an incredible experience. As of today’s recording, one of the TikTok reels Ian made from my interview is getting close to half a million views! https://www.tiktok.com/@ianbick/video/7584901104773729566?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7145094841457509930 In today’s episode, we discuss: · What was it like growing up for you? What did your folks do for a living? · He wanted to be an FBI agent. · When he got bitten by the entrepreneur bug? · Ian’s gambling addiction. When did that start, and what did it look like? · Being convicted of wire fraud and spending 3 years in federal prison. · The shocking way Ian was taken into custody! · Prison life. What surprised him the most and least? · Drugs, cellphones, and other contraband in prison. · Was the population voluntarily segregated by race, like in most state prisons? Were there any prison gangs? · How he was mistaken for a pedophile. · Was he ever physically assaulted? · His time in solitary confinement. · Halfway house life. · The Mister Beast Challenge. What was the most difficult part of this and the easiest? · The guest or moment when things really clicked for Ian’s podcast that pushed him to the next level. · What is the best way to grow a podcast?
