Philip Shepherd is recognized as an international authority on embodiment. His unique techniques have been developed to transform our disconnected experience of self and world, and are based on the vision articulated in his celebrated books, New Self, New World (2010) and Radical Wholeness (Nov 2017). Philip developed the practices of TEPP to help people reunite the thinking of the head with the deep, present and calm intelligence of the body. Unlike the prevailing view of embodiment – which involves sitting in the head and ‘listening to your body' – Philip's approach helps you listen to the world through the body. What the body most deeply understands is that it belongs to the world. Ultimately, TEPP is about coming home to yourself. In today's new episode, Philip shares his personal journey to understanding his path, purpose, and embodiment - and it all started with a bicycle. This journey allowed him to be wide open to the world - to nature, to people, to connection, and adventure. It allowed him to connect with himself in a new and profound way, too. On that bike he went through so many waves of understanding what it means to be human, and each one of them was luminous. As Philip shares, if you get on the bike and keep peddling, and you're headed in the right direction, and you don't stop peddling, you'll get there - and that's exactly what he's done. 20 years ago, I was on staff with a campus ministry at the University of California Santa Barbara. One day I was on campus and on my way to a meeting when God interrupted my schedule. I had stepped onto an elevator and before pushing the button for the third floor, I noticed a man hurrying to catch the elevator before the door closed. I held the door and invited him to jump on. I introduced myself and he said his name was Eugene. He was a visiting professor from Shanghai, China. We talked for a few moments before each of us had to move on. But what's interesting is from that encounter, I kept running into Eugene on campus. Over and over our paths kept crossing. Eventually we had lunch together and I asked Eugene if he was a Christian. He was not, but I invited him to a weekly investigative Bible study I was leading for international students. Amazingly, Eugene accepted my offer. Eugene and I became friends. We invited him to celebrate Thanksgiving in our home. Eugene kept attending our Bible studies throughout the school year. At the end of the year, he invited me to travel to Shanghai to spend a couple of weeks with his family. God opened wonderful doors for me to share Christ with his family and friends. All these encounters occurred because one day God interrupted my schedule on an elevator.Do you believe in “divine appointments?” Have you ever considered the fact that the traveler you with with on a plane, the waiter at your table, the clerk at the department store might be in your life by divine appointment?Divine appointments are those times when God arranges lives to intersect at crucial moments. Divine appointments are those orchestrated interactions when you know in your heart God is asking you to do something and to do something now.In Acts chapter 8 we see the story of Christ-follower named, Phillip. We learn that one day God interrupts his schedule so he can lead a stranger to Christ.Acts 8:26-29“Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian[a] eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”I am amazed at how far God will go to reach ONE person! I'm also amazed at the obedience required to win ONE person. When the Holy Spirit prompts us to minister, he empowers us to carry it out. Where God guides, God provides. The key to evangelism isn't boldness, it is obedience. If we take the first step of obedience, the Spirit will guide us and empower us with boldness. As Philip is walking next to the chariot he hears the man reading the prophet Isaiah and Philip knew at that moment that God had given him an open door. God had arranged this meeting between Philip and the Ethiopian. This is a DIVINE APPOINTMENT!As Christians we simply pray for open doors, then we must keep alert to the opportunities God presents.
Philip was a part of a great work in Samaria, and yet God had something else for him to do. As Philip was obedient, even when it didn’t make sense, God was able to do something special. Seeing his obedience is a challenge and an encouragement to us that we would faithfully obey the voice of God.

Part of disciple-ing others is helping them connect with Christ’s death and resurrection. This is precisely what happened with Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch in Acts 8:26-40. As Philip was going, he met a man with questions about the Bible. He responded to those… Continue Reading "Disciple! Newness of Life"
When Philip the good went to the Imperial Diet in Regensburg in 1454 it gave his son and heir, Charles, the count of Charolais, a chance to get some practice at ruling in his stead, giving subjects in the Burgundian Low Countries a glimpse into what the future of the dynasty might hold. When Philip returned he was obsessed with the idea of crusade, meaning both Charles and Isabella of Portugal remained involved in major political actions. However, as always, events in the Low Countries soon demanded Philip’s attention again, as he would execute plans to expand the Burgundian influence over the spiritual as well as temporal realms in his domains. He would force one of his many illegitimate children, David, onto the bishopric throne in Utrecht in 1455 and the year after that another Burgundian puppet into the same role in the ever-troublesome bishopric of Liege. As Philip was busy dealing with these various issues, however, a power struggle broke out within his inner circle that would see the Croy family begin making plans to take down Philip’s longtime right hand man, his chancellor Nicolas Rolin. To further complicate matters, in 1455 a bombshell would drop when the heir to the French throne, the dauphin Louis, would flee the issues he had with his own father, the King of France, and sensationally seek and receive exile at the Burgundian court. A generational shift was taking place and, faced with all these new contenders for his father’s honour and affection, Charles would feel threatened and the relationship between the Burgundian father and son would sour. By the time he was just 23 years old, the two men would no longer be on speaking terms and Charles would be removed from the political process altogether. The Burgundian dynasty, as strong as it looked from the outside, was looking very frail from within. Nothing is as it seems. As Philip decides to dig deeper, he finds that his curiosity comes with a price.
Sunday, 28 July 2019 | Acts 8:26-40 // Keith Cooper | Divine Appointments // Philip willingly travelled to spread the gospel, despite persecution, because of the love God have given him for people’s souls. He listened well to the Holy Spirit’s direction and brought the enlightenment of the scriptures and the revelation of Christ to the people he met. And Philip obeyed God, going where he was sent and speaking as he was directed. // // As Philip explained to the eunuch, all of scripture points to Jesus. The passage confusing the eunuch could only be understood in the light of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
As Philip preaches the gospel in Samaria, many profess faith and receive baptism, including a sorcerer named Simon. But is Simon really converted?
Having met with, chatted, and baptised the eunuch, Philip is now once again led away by the Spirit to preach the Gospel. Presumably, as God had led Philip to connect with the eunuch, he then would have connected the eunuch with a local body of believers so that he could continue to be discipled and grow. It’s worth mentioning this because sometimes we can elevate one role in the Body over another, however, it’s so important to acknowledge that we all play critical parts in people becoming and growing as Christians. That doesn’t of course diminish the responsibility of every Christian to be prepared and willing to give an answer for what they believe, but it should encourage us as we recognise that we do this together. God brings different people into our lives at different time, but always with the potential for a Gospel opportunity. As Philip heads off, he now goes to Azotus which was one of the five Philistine cities, but he is actually en route to Caesarea. At this point, it might be easy to think of Philip as just going from place-to-place, but when he gets to Caesarea he’ll be there for a while. In fact, his next appearance (cf. Acts 21:8) is some 20 years later! What a great example to us that wherever we go, be it short-term or long-term, that we must be prayerful and open to whatever opportunities there might be to proclaim Jesus. Over the years, I’ve often been astounded by the opportunities that come up when I’m travelling, yet I’m equally amazed by the long-term evangelism through relationships when we’re at home. The point is: whether at home, away, at work, at play, or even en route, God wants to use it all to make disciples. We might not always feel ready, but God is. ALQuestionsHave you ever had an opportunity to share something - even something very small - about Jesus when travelling? What are the long-term relationships that you have with people who are not yet passionate followers of Jesus? How can you pray for them?PrayerHeavenly Father, thank you that you are preparing opportunities for us to share the Gospel wherever we go. Please embolden and ready us for those times. Please soften hearts and give us wisdom, that many people might come to put their trust in Jesus as their Lord. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Talk about a ‘gospel’ opportunity! As Philip runs up to the Ethiopian, the passage of Scripture that the eunuch has opened, is none other than Isaiah 53! And with great wisdom, the eunuch wants to understand who is the person described? Who is the one who was led like a sheep to the slaughter? Who was this one humiliated and deprived of justice? Was it the prophet, Isaiah, or someone else? Such a brilliant question! And so beautifully addressing the very question that the eunuch has raised, Philip, starting with Isaiah 53, shares the Good News of Jesus. This is such an amazing model of how God is at work in drawing people to himself. In part because of Philip’s willingness to follow the prompting of the Spirit. In part because of the way that the eunuch was following his enquiring and yearning heart for God. In part, because Philip was willing ready to meet the eunuch where he was at, and able to give an answer for what he believed when he was asked (cf. 1 Peter 3:15).As followers of Jesus who are seeking to make other disciples, that means that we not only need to be looking for opportunities to share the Gospel and responsive to the lead of the Holy Spirit, but we also need to be prepared. We need to be prepared not only in our understanding of the Gospel (as per yesterday’s reflection), but also to be willing to come alongside people and explore their questions. I love that Philip started with the eunuch’s question which beautifully led then to the sharing of the Good News. As we seek to proclaim Jesus, we need to be ready to meet people where they are at and explain the Gospel accordingly. As we do that, there is often the great privilege of coming to God’s Word together; reading it together, asking questions together, and ultimately, seeking Jesus together. ALQuestionsHow do you understand Isaiah 53 to be fulfilled in Jesus? If you wanted to share something from the Bible to someone enquiring about Jesus, what would you share?PrayerGracious Father, we thank you that your Spirit is at work in drawing people to yourself. Please help us to respond to the prompting of your Spirit, point enquirers to Jesus, and also be prepared to give an answer. Amen.
We need to draw nigh to God. In Acts 8:30-31, Philip asks the Ethiopian if he understood what he read. The Ethiopian said “How can I, except some man should guide me?” The Ethiopian desired for Philip to be a shepherd to him and teach him the scriptures. As Philip gave the gospel to the Ethiopian we should be doing that with those around us. We need to take the time and be a witness of Christ to others. If we are saved we are to be a light for Christ. Please join Pastor Scheving as he preaches on “Can I Get a Witness?”
As Philip talks about our third value being empowered, we see that to live the authentic Christian life it is crucial we keep receiving Jesus’ promise of the Holy Spirit’s personal power!
