259. How to Be a Multiplying Disciple: Seek Pleasing Results, Not Pleasing Methods

How to Be a Multiplying Disciple:  Seek pleasing results, not pleasing methods “When do you plan on moving?  How long have you lived at this address?  Where did you move from?  How did you happen to pick this area?  If you were to move, where would you go next?  And when would that be?”  In the middle of the great recession and housing collapse of 2008, I clung to this sales script as if it were straight from the Bible.  I had only been selling real estate for two years when the real estate market collapsed.  In order to survive, I looked around for some way to list and sell houses in one of the worst markets on record.  I had a wife and three kids in elementary and middle school.  I had a mortgage and I had just bought a brand new Chevy Suburban.  I saw an advertisement for a real estate sales conference held in Las Vegas taught by a man named Mike Ferry.  Mike made Donald Trump appear humble, but he guaranteed that anyone who followed his methods would sell in any market. I put the conference on a credit card and listened for three days as he expounded on how to sell homes.  I came back with the confidence that if I just put into practice what he taught, I could keep my head above water and sell homes.  One technique he promoted was direct sales or door knocking.  This is a method that most realtors avoid at all costs.  However, desperation drove me on.  Nearly every morning I would knock on fifty to one hundred doors and recite the script Mike had provided.  Amazingly, it worked.  I started finding people who were thinking about selling their homes.  One lady said, “Yes, I need to sell my house immediately.  I called another realtor, but they never called me back!  Come right in.”  I listed and sold her home.  I found another couple that wanted to sell their home and then called my brother who was looking to buy in that same neighborhood.  He lives there to this day.    It wasn't easy, but I was able to support my family on straight commission sales (I only earned money if I actually sold a house), build a new house and support the newborn church we had just planted in Ashland, Oregon. Why would I do something so uncomfortable?  I was new, unknown, untested and had few relationships in the community.  I didn't have time to build a relationship network in time to feed my family.  Desperation drove me to embrace unpleasant methods.  The result, however, was pleasant results. If you desire to multiply disciples for Christ, you have to ask yourself the question, “Do I want pleasant methods or pleasant results?”  I talk to many disciples who sincerely want to save souls, bear fruit and help people to know God.  They've been praying for years to find someone open, but they remain barren.  The problem is they are praying for pleasant results while using pleasant methods.  They aren't running to win.  Look at what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. All disciples are running the Christian race, but not all are running to win.  They have a false expectation that even if I don't beat my body and make it my slave, I can still win the race.  Paul understood that only those willing to crucify themselves would see the kind of life-giving results that most disciples pray for.  When we were living in Japan, my wife, Pam, got sick of not saving souls.  She made a decision to start sharing with 100 people a day for seven days.  I was shocked.  Pam is a highly relational disciple.  She had never done anything like that before.  I joined her in the challenge.  During that week, she met a woman who got baptized within a couple of months.  She was the wife of professional baseball player in Japan.  Pam chose to prioritize pleasing results over pleasing methods.  Did she wake up every day, thinking “Yes!  I get to share with 100 people today!”?  No.  I certainly didn't.  But in one week, she changed her entire situation.  Last year, I decided to help out campus ministry recover from Covid.  It had shrunk from twenty-plus disciples to three.  I decided to simply go out and go sharing along with the few students.  It wasn't easy inviting people to church who were 35 years younger.  One day I met a man named Hudson on campus.  He was a freshman.  We studied the gospel together and he got baptized.  The campus grew from three to 13 in one school year.  I had to ask myself the question, do I want pleasing methods or pleasing results?  I am pleased with the results.  God blessed the willingness to crucify ego and pride.  If you want to save souls, you will have to decide to run to win, pay the price and practice methods that aren't pleasant at times.  It starts with: ·         Inviting people you don't know ·         Sharing your faith every day ·         Keeping invitation cards with you ·         Bringing people to church ·         Following up with people you've met  ·         Share with the first person you meet that day ·         Set a goal for how many people you will invite over the next 30 or 90 days Saving souls is not a mystery.  It takes a run to win attitude.  It demands that you desire pleasing results over pleasing methods.  Take a look at your life right now.  If you aren't multiplying disciples what's your priority. Practical application: ·         Set a sharing goal for the next seven days ·         Schedule a time to go sharing with another disciple in the next three days ·         Challenge yourself to practice an unpleasant method to accomplish a pleasant outcome

Home Church helps our body seek God's best for one another. Home Church Questions 1. What did you learn from Ken's presentation of 2 Corinthians that convicts you or challenges you?2. Paul refers to troubles (afflictions) nine times in his letter. All believers experience troubles, yet God is “the God of all comfort” (1:3, you might read 1:3-11). Can you name a time when you needed comfort, and through what means God provided comfort? Conversely, is there someone you are aware that needs your comfort?3. Paul spends much of the letter defending his integrity and sincerity, both in his decision-making and his apostolic ministry. He describes his life as being led in “triumphal procession,” spreading the “aroma of Christ” to the world (2:15-17). How does this description instruct us about our walk with Christ?4. Paul knew hardship more than we will ever experience (ref. 11:23-28, 32). Amazingly, he never lost heart because of his anticipation of the future (4:16-18). What circumstances in life might cause one to lose heart? How does one embrace and maintain an eternal perspective in those circumstances?5. How would you describe what changed in your life as a “new creation in Christ” (5:17)? How is being a new creation related to being an “ambassador for Christ” (5:18-20).6. Read 9:6-15. What stands out to you personally from these verses about your financial life? How does it relate to the concept of "storing up treasures in heaven" as mentioned in Matthew 6:20?7. This novel is set in the 1960s with a backdrop of The Beatles and other music of the time. It tells the story of Daisy Shoemaker who is 15 in 1964. She was born into a fundamentalist Mormon community on the US - Canada border. In a ceremony called Placement she is given as a teenage wife to a much older man. She finds this intolerable and runs away. The church official who makes the decisions is known as Bishop and he assures his followers that he has a direct line to God. Amazingly they believe him. It's a gripping and enraging read. It's fiction but events like the book describes are still happening today. The fundamentalist cult is vey much alive and well. There is a Netflix documentary about the group .. Keep Sweet : Pray and Obey.

When Sandy first contacted me after her son, Blake's death, I never imagined that less than 2 years later she would be sharing his story on the podcast. When Sandy wrote to me, it was only 6 weeks since Blake had died. The pain was palpable throughout her email. Her very last sentence to me read, 'This is the MOST excruciating pain ever!!' She was filled with anger toward the doctors who failed to diagnose Blake quickly enough and see just how sick he was. Sandy says that she was in a very dark place for over a year. She posted on social media about Blake, finding others to share her pain. She would spend time with Blake's friends on his birthday and other special days, but Sandy stayed in darkness focusing on Blake's death and all that had been lost. In a way, Sandy felt comfortable in the grief. She felt that if she didn't continue to tightly hang on to the grief, she might start to forget Blake. It felt like the best way to honor Blake was to remain in her dark grief. Amazingly, it was a near-death experience that showed her a new way. Sandy had a long history of diabetes, but after Blake died, she neglected routine doctor's visits and her diabetes went out of control. She was found by a friend unconscious in her home in a coma. She had to be intubated and placed in the ICU with failing organs. Her family was told that Sandy would not survive. Somehow, however, Sandy did survive. Doctors and nurses in the hospital all came to see the 'miracle patient' who should have never lived. Suddenly, everything changed for Sandy. She realized that for some reason, her life was spared. It was not her time to die. She decided to rededicate her life entirely. Instead of focusing on Blake's death, Sandy worked to focus on his life. She tells his story to anyone who will listen. She talks about his amazing heart and giving nature. She educates others on tissue and organ donation. Sandy decided that for the remainder of her days, she would focus on living in the light and not the darkness. It is not grief that holds her close to Blake. It is her unchanging, amazing love for Blake that continues to keep him close.

In the last few decades, there has been a huge increase in allergy and allergic reactions, but why? Just what has changed in our health and environment to bring this about? Consultant NHS allergist Dr Sophie Farooque discusses one of the biggest puzzles in medicine. For example peanut allergies were almost unknown before the 1990s, but today it  and other food allergies are much more common. Sophie reveals the best thing to do to stop a child developing a food allergy is - perhaps counter intuitively -  to ensure that from an early age, they are exposed to a wide variety of foods, including potentially hypoallergenic ones. And Sophie discusses how  children with eczema are at increased risk of  developing a cascade of other allergies, and what parents and doctors can do to minimise this risk. She explains why if you are allergic to one cat you will probably be allergic to all, but why that's not necessarily the case for dogs. It turns out that cat allergen is one of the most powerful allergens of all, and remarkably resilient. Amazingly, it has even been found in Antartica. And for those parts of the world where it's the start of spring and many are starting to suffer from hay fever, she explains why she recommends nasal rinses and steroid sprays, but says patients should stay away from nasal decongestants and hay fever steroid injections. The link below gives the BSACI's (British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology) advice on early weaning to avoid food allergy),and the BSACI website also contains lots of other information about allergies in general. Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

The Mishnah Berurah writes that we fast on Ta'anit Esther because on the 13th of Adar the Jewish people gathered together to fight for their lives and they needed to cry out to Hashem and fast to get Heavenly help to defeat their enemies. The fast is to remind us that whenever a person is in trouble and he fasts and makes teshuva and cries out to Hashem in tefila, Hashem will hear his prayers and bring him salvation. Rabbenu Bachya writes in parashat V'etchanan that tefilah is so great, it has the ability to change nature. Tefila is so great, it has the ability to save someone from potential harm. And tefila is so great, it has the ability to nullify any decree. The Me'iri and the Maharsha both write, tefila could change a person's mazal , which means even if a person was destined not to have something, tefila could change that destiny. The Kav HaYashar writes that specifically on Ta'anit Esther there's a segula that prayers are readily accepted in the merit of Mordechai and Esther. A person must always believe that no matter how bleak a situation appears to be, prayer can take him out of it. Sometimes it may require dozens of tefilot, sometimes it may require hundreds of tefilot, the main thing is that the prayers are said with sincerity and kavanah and belief that Hashem is listening and waiting to help. It is never too late to be helped. Recently, a Rosh Yeshiva in Eretz Yisrael was zocheh to have his first child at the age of 88. He did not merit to have children with his first wife, who passed away about six years ago. And now, after five years of marriage with his second wife, she gave birth to a baby boy at the age of 57. About a year ago, a woman got married at the age of 39. It was a tremendous simcha. Before the chuppah , a woman whose youngest child is 10 years old went over to the kallah and said, “I know that tefilot under the chuppah are very precious. Please, I'm begging you, pray for me. I've been trying to have a child for the last 10 years without success.” The kallah told her, of course she would pray, and then she said she's also going to need heavenly mercy to have children and asked that woman to pray for her. At that moment, they both exchanged names and agreed to pray for each other to have a child. And now, within a year of that chuppah , baruch Hashem, both of them were zocheh to have a baby. If the story ended there, it would be a very nice story, but there's more. Amazingly, both of these women delivered their babies on the exact same day. This is Hashem telling all of us. “I am here. I am listening to your tefilot and I can bring you salvation in an instant. It's up to us to continue believing and continue praying with heartfelt emotion, even if it's been so long without receiving what we have been asking for. B'ezrat Hashem, everyone's tefilot should be mekubal b'ratzon .

It seems that memorizing scripture is a lost discipline in today's church culture. I rarely hear anyone talking about the verse they are memorizing, nor do I hear people reciting the verses they have learned by heart. Main Points:1. A generation ago, scripture memorization was practiced more regularly. It was talked about in the church. At home, families memorized Bible verses together and practiced quoting them to one another. I remember as a child, my family memorizing Romans chapters six and eight. We also memorized several of the Psalms. Amazingly, many years later, I can still recite many of these Bible verses by heart.2. When we memorize Bible verses, it allows us to internalize the Word of God. This deepens our spiritual understanding and helps us apply these the scriptures to our daily lives.3. Putting the Word of God in our hearts and developing the ability to recite verses at any time, gives us strength to fight temptation.Today's Scripture Verses:Deuteronomy 11:18-19 - “Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”Colossians 3:16 - “Let the Word of God dwell in you richly…” Psalm 1:1-2 - “Blessed is the one…whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.”Psalm 119:11 - “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”Psalm 37:31 - “The law of their God is in their hearts; their feet do not slip.”Quick Links:Subscribe to The 5 Minute Discipleship NewsletterDonate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group5 Minute Discipleship on Instagram

In this episode, we dive deep into how a specific functional medicine test called DUTCH test can help to restore hormonal balance. I sit down with a hormone health practitioner - Hannah and we chat about how doing the DUTCH has allowed her to dive even deeper into rebalancing her hormones in a way she wasn't able to with general natural strategies alone. Ever since Hannah hit puberty she had painful periods. Like most women, she went on birth control on and off for almost a decade. At the age of 25, by the end of her birth control journey, she had acne all over her jaw line, painful breasts for like a week, insomnia 3 days before her periods, and heavy periods. It wasn't until she started to learn about holistic nutrition, that she realized how stress can play a huge role in hormonal imbalance. Amazingly, she resolved her symptoms in just 4-6 weeks, through holistic strategies.  But a year ago, she started experiencing breast tenderness around ovulation time and increased occurrence of respiratory infections. She took the DUTCH Test to look into what was going into her body. The results showed that she had slight estrogen dominance, low testosterone, and low cortisol levels. These insights guided her toward making dietary and lifestyle changes to get rid of the symptoms she was having and fix the underlying hormonal imbalance.  Tune in to completely understand the DUTCH test and its significance for healing your hormonal imbalance.

Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

A rabbi told me his daughter recently got married and, baruch Hashem, he was able to pay every last dollar that he needed for all the expenses. Hashem helped him in an amazing way and he doesn't owe even one person money. This past Motzaei Shabbat, his wife told him she was going to need around $500 in cash the next day. The rabbi was literally down to his last few dollars. He was expecting a paycheck that upcoming week, but at the moment, he did not have the funds to give his wife the money she needed. They are both tremendous ba'aleh bitachon and so the rabbi told his wife there's still a lot of time between now and tomorrow afternoon. Hashem has infinite ways of sending money, b'ezrat Hashem, we'll get it. Amazingly, the next morning a man came to the door and dropped off an envelope with the rabbi's name on it. The rabbi was not home, he was out learning, and so the man told the rabbi's child to please give it to his father and tell him that he had this money set aside to give him for the wedding, he just never got around to dropping it off. When the rabbi got home, he opened the envelope and saw $500 in cash, exactly what they needed, exactly when they needed it. Seeing Hashem's hashgacha this clearly is very inspiring. Another man told me, he went last Sunday to his shul's library to pick out a book to read with his 10-year-old son. He found a nice book with pictures that would be very enjoyable for them to look at together. That night they were reading it and they got to a page with a photo of the groundbreaking ceremony of Yeshivat Kol Yaakov in Israel. The man was telling his son about the Rosh Yeshiva Rav Yehuda Ades, shlita, and went on to describe the greatness of the yeshiva and how many talmidei chachamim it has produced. Then he said, “I should really be giving money to help support this yeshiva.” His son then asked him, “So why don't you, Dad?” He replied, “I'm not the type of person that the yeshivot are chasing for donations. In fact, I wouldn't even know where to send the check.” The very next day, this man was sitting at his desk at work in Long Island and the receptionist paged him asking if he could come help with a rabbi at the door who didn't speak English. The man went over to the rabbi, and the rabbi said he was there on behalf of the yeshiva Kol Yaakov in Israel. The man was floored. Here he just said he wanted to give tzedakah to this yeshiva and the very next day Hashem sent the rabbi right to his door. Hashem is involved in everything that takes place in our lives. Sometimes it is very obvious, but most times it's not. When it's obvious, we are to take chizuk and use it for the times when it's not so obvious. Recognizing the Yad Hashem in our lives is always a great avodah .

New evidence of Atlantis has been found in the Richat Structure, also known as the Eye of the Sahara in Mauritania. Is this finally proof that the once lost city of Atlantis was thriving there? The Richat Structure is an immense, circular, geological formation in the heart of the desert. Amazingly, its concentric circles look exactly the way Plato described Atlantis, which was made up of “alternate zones of sea and land, larger and smaller, encircling one another. There were two of land and three of water.” In another synchronous, historical alignment, in the ancient kingdom of Mauretania, there lived a legendary king named Atlas. But how does he connect with the story? The mysterious structure has captured the attention of all kinds of researchers, from professionals to amateurs, and it's ignited speculation about its possible connection to ancient civilizations. After all, the Sahara was once home to lush forests and active rivers. Is there finally evidence of roads and dwellings going through the Richat Structure? Who would have lived there in history? Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

The pasuk says in Yeshayah, וידעת כי אני ה' לא יבושו קווי - You will know that I am Hashem, those who have hope in Me will not be ashamed. Which means there's a certain way that Hashem deals with people who have real hope in Him. They may not deserve to get what they're hoping for, but because of their hope alone, Hashem ensures they will not be ashamed. There's a reward for hope. The Ramchal wrote a whole kuntras explaining how great hope in Hashem is. A tefila made with hope is infinitely greater than one without hope. A person has to feel that Hashem wants to give him what he's asking for. The pasuk says that Hashem is משביע לכל חי רצון . Hashem doesn't only think about us day and night and do what's best for us every second of the day, He also wants to do our will, so long as it's not something that will be bad for us. The Midrash Rabbah in Shemot , regarding the mann , brings the pasuk ומשביע לכל חי רצון , and explains that Hashem doesn't just provide a person's needs, He gives each person his wants. When Hashem sent the mann down in the desert for 40 years, He gave the people the pleasure of tasting anything they wanted in the mann . He could have just made it so that the mann had a good taste and they would have been satisfied. But instead He said, “I want to give you what you want. Tell me what you want to taste in the mann , and it will taste exactly like that.” It is true that sometimes what we want is not the best thing for us. But even there, by Hashem not giving it to us, He is doing our will. Because if we would know why it wasn't good for us, we wouldn't want it. However, sometimes the reason something is not good for a person, is because he doesn't deserve it based on his mitzvot and averot . In those instances, the fact that the person has hope alone, will give him the zechut to then deserve what he is asking for. Therefore, before a person asks for anything, he should think, Hashem wants to give it to me, He can give it to me. And if I believe in His ability to give it to me, with complete emunah, that may be the zechut I need to get it . Rabbi David Goldwasser told a story about a woman who was not so religious, who came to him asking him to pray for her, because she had to undergo certain tests that were potentially very serious. The Rabbi assured her he would pray for her every day. She thanked him, and before she left, she mentioned something else. After she got divorced, her son was living with her, and then one day out of nowhere, when he was just 19 years old, he left her a letter saying he was sorry, but she was never going to see him again. Just like that, he left home, and it has now been 10 years, and no one has heard a thing about him. She tried so many ways to track him down, including hiring private detectives, but never found a trace of him. She asked the Rabbi if there was any hope of her ever finding her son. The Rabbi told her there is always hope, Hashem can do anything, and she needed to start praying to Him. He gave her a tefila to say in English, and encouraged her to feel the greatness of Hashem, and to know that He could easily help her. She took the paper with the prayer on it, and told the Rabbi she was going to read it every day from the bottom of her heart. A month went by, and nothing happened. She then went on a three-day ecology seminar, and on the last night, she was sitting in a large room with glass walls, and all of a sudden, someone walked by outside that seemed to look like her son. At first, she thought she was hallucinating, but then she got up and ran to see who that person was. She ran until she finally caught up with him. Amazingly, it was her son. When she looked at him, he said, “Ma, what are you doing here?” She said, “I've been waiting every day to see your face again.” They sat and spoke for a while, and they exchanged numbers. He promised to be in touch with her. The woman went for her testing in the coming weeks, and they determined a surgery was required. When she went to the surgery, she went in alone. But when she woke up from the surgery, she was overcome with joy, because the first person she saw was her son, standing by her bed. Baruch Hashem, the surgery was successful. There is always hope in every situation.

Most general aviation pilots hesitate to declare an inflight emergency fearing negative consequences. Greg Feith, John Goglia and Todd Curtis use a Beechcraft Bonanza plane crash to illustrate how declaring an emergency can be the safest move. The fatal Beechcraft Bonanza accident in the spotlight of this episode is featured in the book, "Single-Pilot IFR Pro Tips" written by 2019 National CFI of the Year Gary "GPS" Reeves. Known as The Guy in the Pink Shirt, Reeves uses examples from several incidents to illustrate good general aviation pilot habits. Reeves uses the Beechcaft Bonanza event to highlight the advantages of not waiting to declare an emergency. The Flight Safety Detectives find that this crash is also a classic example of how oversights and bad habits by the pilot in command can lead to an avoidable accident. They offer life-saving insights into this aviation disaster. The NTSB found that the cause was an improperly positioned fuel selector lever. Greg shares his own experience dealing with an improperly positioned lever. John recounts accidents involving fuel selector levers, including the crash that killed John Denver. Amazingly, John's experience is that many general aviation pilots have problems with the fuel sector due to not using them at all and never getting a feel for how they operate.“It's not like jumping in the car to go to the grocery store,” John says. “Flying is not that simple. You need to do a thorough preflght, every time.”If the accident pilot had followed Gary Reeves advice to declare an emergency when problems first develop, the pilot would have been able to land safely at an airport. The FAA would have looked at the scenario as prudent decision making and would likely not have taken any action against the pilot. Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

The Shulchan Aruch writes in Yoreh De'ah , siman 335, if someone, lo alenu , has a sick person in his house, he should go to a Chacham in the city and ask him to pray on behalf of the sick person. When someone gets a beracha from a tzaddik , it's a form of tefila . The tzaddik is asking Hashem to give the person a Refuah Shelema or whatever else is being requested. The words of tzaddikim carry a lot of weight in Shamayim . And that's why we ask them to pray for us. We have to feel so grateful that we have so many ways to gain help from Hashem. A person should never feel hopeless or helpless, because his situation can always change in the blink of an eye. A rabbi told me, every year in his Yeshiva, he sells the rights to the zechuyot of all the Amen Yehe Shemei Rabbah Mevarach s on Rosh Hashanah. He has personally seen miracles happen with people who have acquired them. Last year, a young man who had been married for a few years without children was the one who purchased the zechut . And baruch Hashem, that year, he was zocheh to have a baby boy. A couple of days before the Brit Milah, the Mohel came to check the baby and he said, the baby was very yellow and in all probability the Milah would have to be postponed. The young man told the rabbi he was so excited to finally have a baby that was clearly given to him in a miraculous way. Then he said in wonderment, don't you think a miracle baby should have his Brit Milah on time? That same day, this rabbi happened to be traveling to a great tzaddik to seek counsel and get a beracha . And while he was there, he told the tzaddik about the baby and asked for a beracha that the Brit Milah should go off on time. The tzaddik told the rabbi, “Tell the father he has nothing to worry about. The Brit Milah will go off on the eighth day.” The rabbi was taken aback by the conviction of this tzaddik 's prophetic words. He came back to the Yeshiva that night and told the young man the good news. The night before the Brit Milah, the Mohel came after midnight to check the baby and he said, “The jaundice got worse. There is no way the Milah will be able to take place the next day.” The young father said with confidence, “I know the Milah will take place tomorrow.” He then politely asked the Mohel to come back the next morning to check. The Mohel said it was pointless, but he would come anyway. The next morning the Mohel came and said he couldn't believe what he was seeing. The baby's color was perfect. They made the Milah that day in the afternoon and they were all in awe of this tzaddik 's guarantee. Recently, there was a young boy sick at home and they had a nurse come to the house to administer certain fluids to him. Before the fluids were given, the nurse took the boy's blood pressure and said it was very low and if it didn't change after the fluids would be given, he would have to go to the hospital. The boy heard that and broke down crying. After the fluids were given, they redid the blood pressure and it was even worse. The nurse called her supervisor asking what to do. The supervisor said the boy needed to go to the emergency room immediately. Just at that moment, a rabbi came to visit the house and saw what was going on and he saw the boy in tears. He told the boy not to worry. They were going to solve the issue right then and there. The rabbi asked the boy to accept something upon himself as a zechut . And afterward, the rabbi put his hands on the boy's head and made a tefila to Hashem to heal him. The parents then asked the nurse to please retake the blood pressure. Amazingly, it had gone up significantly and they were all in awe. The nurse said she would wait around to take the blood pressure another couple of times to make sure that it really was normal. She waited 15 minutes, took it again, another 15 minutes and took it again, and each time the blood pressure was fine. We have access to the One who could change anything in an instant. And we have to feel so fortunate for that.

We ended the last episode with the Commencement Address that President Kennedy gave at American University, which marked a major thaw in the cold war, leading to a Nuclear Test Ban Treaty between the United States and the Soviet Union. That was on June 10, 1963. Now let's move on to June 11th. Governor George Wallace, in defiance of federal desegregation orders, attempted to block the enrollment of two African American students at the University of Alabama. Symbolizing his resistance to federal integration efforts, he stood in the doorway and proclaimed, “Segregation Now. Segregation Forever.” It's hard to know if he thought his action was going to intimidate the President, but it did no such thing. JFK quickly federalized the Alabama National Guard, who immediately removed Wallace from the premises.   That night, the President delivered a televised address to the country announcing that he had ordered the National Guard to ensure the enrollment of the two African American students. Then, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and the Constitution, he clearly reaffirmed his administration's full support of the Civil Rights movement. It turns out that the month of June was to become a truly historic month for him because as it continued, on June 26th, he made his legendary trip to West Berlin. In his world-famous speech to 120,000 wildly admiring West Berliners, he said, “There are many people in the world who really don't understand, or say they don't, what is the great issue between the free world and the Communist world. Let them come to Berlin. There are some who say that Communism is the wave of the future. Let them come to Berlin.” Then, with the wit of biting sarcasm he continued, “Freedom has many difficulties and Democracy is not perfect, but we have never had to put a wall up to keep our people in, to prevent them from leaving us.” At that point, he concluded the speech with words that went down in history, “All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and, therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words "Ich bin ein Berliner.” Of course, it meant, “I am a Berliner.” At the end of the trip, he left Berlin for a four-day visit to his ancestral homeland in Ireland, a journey that can only be called a love fest. Not only was he the first US president to ever visit the emerald isle, his trip was celebrated as the return of a truly beloved native son, and wherever he went, he was mobbed by adoring Irish crowds.  He then moved on to two days spent in London consulting with Prime Minister MacMillan before returning to Washington. Following his return from the exhilarating trip abroad, it was time to begin preparing for the coming presidential election. Although it had been a promising first term, he still had a tricky path to navigate in 1964, as his political enemies were powerful and the road ahead of him had some serious obstacles. During these early, pre-elections days of October and November, there were rumored to have been two other events that may have happened which would have critically changed world history if they had come true. The first one is that Kennedy, concluding that the government of South Vietnam had become too unstable to justify further US support, had supposedly set in motion plans to terminate all US involvement in Vietnam by the end of December, 1965, He had made up his mind and we were pulling out. The second possible event is the report that Kennedy had decided to drop Lyndon Johnson from the ticket for the election of 1964 and had told him so. Now, there is no substantial proof to verify either of these claims and there never will be. Still, if you let your imagination run wild a little, you can see how the history of the coming era would have been radically different. Whatever his plans might have been, they would have had to remain top secret given the turbulent politics of the upcoming presidential election. In that regard, he began to embark on some politically-motivated trips. On November 2nd he left for Chicago, followed by a trip to Tampa, Florida on the 18th. Then, on November 21, he and the first lady departed for Texas. They went to San Antonio, then Houston, and then to Fort Worth, where they stayed overnight. The next morning, they took the short flight to Dallas and arrived at 11:38 AM. They got into the presidential limousine and left Love Field at 11:55, arriving in downtown Dallas following the short ride. The streets were lined with throngs of awestruck people, enthusiastically cheering them on, as the most recognized and charismatic couple in the entire world slowly passed by. As they basked in the warmth of the adoring crowd, the motorcade continued on, into the brilliant sunlight of what was shaping up to be an absolutely perfect day. Then, at 12:30 pm, the unthinkable happened.   ***   It's neither necessary nor possible to begin to describe the effect that it had on America, and in particular, the youth of America, as the plague of that horrible news spread like wildfire throughout the population. And it went on for the full thirty days of mourning that followed. For me, when the assassination happened, I had just begun ninth grade, my last year in junior high school and I was in the sadly unfortunate position of being just old enough and just young enough. I was old enough to understand the true gravity of the tragedy, but still young enough to have my childhood sensibilities shaken to the core. And let's not even talk about that four-day stretch of dark days. There was the assassination itself, followed by a day of absolute shock, then the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald on national TV, followed by the incredibly sad and deeply somber funeral, as the forty-six year-old, fallen hero of the republic was laid to rest. It was all so sad, but also, it was all so weird.        For the first time ever, the whole country stopped to watch television as the entire nation stood still for the six-hour funeral. Something like this had happened before, on April 14, 1945 when President Franklin Roosevelt was buried, but that was only on radio. This was completely different. It was much more graphic, as one incredibly grief-stricken image after the next was broadcast to the entire western world. And when it comes to tragic images, the spontaneous salute that John-John gave to his father's flag-draped coffin as it passed him by was seared into our collective memory. Nobody saw that heart-wrenching moment coming. It was almost as if we were being taught as a culture, a dramatic seminar on the ever-present possibility of sudden death…how everything can come to a screeching halt, no matter who you are. And subconsciously the message was clear - if instant death can happen to someone like that, who was at the absolute pinnacle of power, it can happen to any one of us. We can be gone in a flash. And then nothing is the same. In total, all three major networks suspended normal programming for four days and played seventy consecutive hours of the live coverage of the proceedings. From a mass media perspective, the only other time anything like this has ever happened was the coverage of the 911 attacks in 2001.    Again, the purpose of this series of podcasts is to focus on the mass evolution of consciousness that happened during this formative era, as well as to examine my own story as I went through it all. At this point, to put it simply, we all had the wind completely taken out of our sails. Our daily lives continued, but again, it was all so sad and it was all so weird, like we were painfully groping our way through the shadows of a slowly unfolding nightmare that never seemed to end.  And then, suddenly, something completely different happened.   ***   Exactly eighty days after the assassination, on the night of February 9, 1964, variety TV show host Ed Sullivan walked onto the stage of his Sunday night program and with five words, spoke a phrase that absolutely changed everything - “Ladies and Gentleman – The Beatles.” Seventy-Seven million people were watching and for the youth of the country, it was like a magic spell had been cast, designed to dissipate the suffering and the pain that had enveloped us. In an instant, one phase of our life ended and another began. The mourning period was over and suddenly, it was time to sing and dance again. And boy, did we! Once more, it is neither necessary nor possible to begin to describe what happened. Suffice it to say that everything changed for us almost overnight, as this thing called Beatlemania set it. We had four new heroes, these guys named John, Paul, George and Ringo and they were so cool, yet so incredibly upbeat at the same time. Their music was truly amazing but there was also something else about them, something intangible. They seemed to be happily above the toils of life, like they had just arrived from another planet that ran on nothing but pure fun. And on top of it all, their haircuts were like nothing we'd ever seen before. It seemed a little strange at first, but within a few months, all the guys were copying them. I know I went from the standard buzz-cut to the new mop top as soon as my hair would grow out. If it sounds like we were completely awestruck, we were, but don't forget what we'd just been through, not to mention our age – I was just a month shy of turning fifteen. Amazingly, it ended up that the Beatles were just the first wave of what became known as the British Invasion as the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, the Who, the Hollies, the Zombies, the Kinks, Herman's Hermits and God knows how many others came cascading into the country. It seemed like every day, wave after wave of new songs washed up onto the shores of our AM radios, which we had blasting all the time. And that's not to mention all of the new remarkable American music that helped launched us into hyper-space, as well. Of course, we were still going to school and studying, as normal life continued, But, a massive new party had obviously begun, with the Beatles leading the way.   Things went on like that for about six months. Then the Beatles hit an unexpected, little turn in the road, when on the night of August 28, 1964, they finally got to spend an evening with one of their primary musical heroes, the enigmatic Bob Dylan. Now this was another one of those events that was only a very quick couple of hours, and it was largely unnoticed at the time. On one level, it was just your standard meeting of two major musical superstar acts. At the time, the Beatles were enjoying a level of fame that had never been seen before. And along with also being extremely famous, Dylan was the most influential musician of his time. It started out with a lot of goofing around, a lot of partying, you know the standard kind of things that can happen in a glitzy high-end hotel room in New York City when the absolute pinnacle of rock and roll gets together to relax and have a good time. But it ended up being quite a bit more than that. Even though it was extremely subtle, again, those subterranean Teutonic plates were set in motion and a major earthquake was looming, just over the horizon. Well, this is a perfect place for us to stop, so as always, keep your eyes, mind and heart open, and let's get together in the next one.

Today history repeats, with Tucker Carlson releasing a two-hour rant by Putin, presenting what Kellyanne Conway once lovingly referred to as “alternative facts.” Gaslit Nation has the fact-check for you here, and explains why Tucker Carlson, in his traitors paradise in Moscow, visiting Tara Reade, should be investigated for being an unregistered foreign agent. The Dominion lawsuit against Fox News essentially established that Tucker Carlson is not a journalist, and therefore must be investigated for furthering the Kremlin's agenda.   Like longtime Kremlin operative Paul Manafort who he tried to rehabilitate on his Fox News show, Tucker Carlson reeks of FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act). According to Anton Gerashchenko, a former member of Ukraine's parliament who has served in various government roles, Russian telegram channels expressed frustration in the Kremlin over Putin and Tucker's love-in. (Putin sounded like one of those rambling email forwards about Barack HUSSEIN Obama, but the anti-Ukrainian version.) Those reports mention that Tucker was paid a fee. If that's the case, then he needs to report that and any other perks he received from a foreign adversary. If he doesn't disclose if and what he was paid for his Kremlin interview, he should face a FARA investigation by the DOJ (Wake up, Merrick Garland!), and an investigation by Democrats in the Senate.  Amazingly, this week the Mr. Jones' graphic novel adaptation, In the Shadow of Stalin, was announced by Oni Press – read more about that in the show notes below. My newsletter: https://simonowens.substack.com/   When Jack Karmer and Nick Martell launched their daily newsletter Market Snacks in 2011, they kept their names off the publication so that it wouldn't jeopardize their finance day jobs. But once the newsletter started to attract readers and sponsorship revenue, they decided to come clean. Luckily, their bosses let them continue on with their side hustle.   Flash forward about a half decade, and Market Snacks had gained enough traction that they both decided to go to business school so they could learn to scale the company. Around that same time, they teamed up with a large podcast network to launch a daily companion show, and almost immediately it was featured on the Apple Podcast app.   This success didn't go unnoticed. Robinhood, which at the time was a fast-growing stock trading app, came on at first as a sponsor, but a few months later decided to outright buy Market Snacks to leverage it as a marketing channel for the app.   Jack and Nick continued to host the podcast while managing the rest of the Market Snacks team, and then in 2022 they went to the Robinhood executive team with a radical proposition: they wanted to spin off the daily podcast and acquire it from Robinhood. Amazingly, their bosses went for it, and that year they renamed the podcast to The Best One Yet.   In my interview with Jack and Nick, we discussed how they came up with the idea for the newsletter, why Robinhood allowed them to take the podcast back, and what they've done with the company ever since they became full owners.

When 18-year-old Steve Smith was sent to Oak Ridge Psychiatric Hospital in Ontario, Canada in the 1960s, (misdiagnosed due to an ill-timed LSD trip) he didn't expect the inmates to be running the asylum, or to be part of a control group in a government-sponsored experiment to try to control psychopaths and turn normal people, like Steve, into controlled psychopaths, with the aim of unleashing them on society. The inmates endured cruel and ingenious methods of torture and various drugs, including LSD. Amazingly, Steve survived to tell the tale and filed the lawsuit that prevailed twenty years later and has led to other class action lawsuits against the Canadian government. Heroes Behind HeadlinesExecutive Producer Ralph PezzulloProduced & Engineered by Mike DawsonMusic provided by ExtremeMusic.com

If you had the opportunity to talk to the Creator of the Universe, would you take advantage of it? The answer to that question may be obvious, but, sadly, many Christians forfeit the privilege of talking to God in prayer regularly. In this message from David Platt from Matthew 6:6, we're encouraged and invited to be intentional about talking to God and spending time with him through prayer and fasting. Amazingly, the One we pray to has made it possible to call on him as our Heavenly Father by sending his own Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins and make us sons and daughters by faith.
