The Church Street Podcast: The Bullpen Where every voice gets a turn at the mic. At First Grapevine, we're blessed with three gifted preachers—but sometimes, not every voice gets a chance to share during Sunday worship. The Bullpen is where that extra voice steps up, bringing fresh perspectives and spiritual depth to the conversation. In this episode, Pastor Grant Palma, Dr. Keva Green, and Pastor Zach Stiefel explore The Letters of Paul, focusing on Galatians 2:15–20—a powerful passage about how salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ, not by following the law. They also revisit the moving story of the Ethiopian Eunuch, reflecting on how it has personally shaped their faith journeys. And in a lighter moment, they discuss how country music can mean very different things depending on where in the world you are! Join us for real conversations, honest reflections, and shared wisdom from three unique voices. Message by Fred Hartsook, recorded live June 29, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church of Bellingham. Scripture read by Diane Tate.Stay CuriousPhilip and the Ethiopian Eunuch - evangelism is done one-by-one - the Spirit directs all times and places - stay curious. What strikes you about the Eunuch? How does Philip welcome one who was not allowed to enter the temple. How can you be like Philip — meeting people where they are and walking with them toward Jesus? Is there anything holding you back from full obedience to Jesus? What happens when Philip is taken away?Acts 8:26-4026 Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a wilderness road.) 27 So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, the queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to this chariot and join it.” 30 So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 He replied, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. 32 Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this:“Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth.33 In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.”34 The eunuch asked Philip, “About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” 35 Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. 36 As they were going along the road, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?” 38 He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more and went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

June 27, 2025Today's Reading: Acts 8:26-40Daily Lectionary: Joshua 2:1-24; Acts 8:26-40“And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.” (Acts 8:38)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. The Ethiopian Eunuch was missing something. He had worship; He had the scroll of the prophet Isaiah (Is. 53), and yet it did not make sense to him. Now, to be clear, Philip is not the pastor who can unlock the secrets of Scripture with his wicked interpretation skills. Philip is the pastor who gets to proclaim the key to all the scriptures—the key that opened up the scriptures to Philip and all the disciples. This key, of course, is that perfect Sunday School answer type of key. I'm talking about Jesus!Philip, brought by the Spirit, had to be ecstatic when he saw he could talk to this guy about Jesus. The eunuch hears the Gospel. He hears of Jesus, the Lamb of God, who was led to the slaughter and did not say a word. That Jesus who died for sinners by taking their sin and making them His own. The Lamb Jesus who silently takes our punishment that brought us peace, and by His wounds, we are healed. This Gospel, the Good News that God justifies sinners by the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus, is that Word of the Lord that does not return empty. The Holy Spirit, through Philip, the pastor, preaches the Gospel that creates faith in the Ethiopian Eunuch. Then, water comes into the scene. Faith and Baptism go hand in hand. The Holy Spirit works faith by the hearing of the Word, and the Word that works faith is joined to the waters of Baptism. The eunuch understood and was brought to faith by the work of the Holy Sp,irit who called him by the Gospel. That faith in Christ saves, and he wanted to be united to the Word made flesh that went like a lamb to the slaughter to save Him. Philip, the pastor, baptizes him, and the rest is history.Rejoice in the daily reality of your Baptism, where the Holy Spirit created faith in you, and in those words and promises of God in and with the water, you were united to Christ, your Savior. Surely as He died, you died. Surely as He has risen from the dead, so you also will rise again. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.It sets the Lamb before our eyes, Who made the atoning sacrifice, And calls the souls with guilt oppressed To come and find eternal rest. As the church grows more and more people are brought into God's kingdom. People who are different from us but still persons created in the image of God. This is a central point in our story of Philip meeting the Ethiopian Eunuch who is seeking to know God (Acts 8). How does Philip respond to this outsider - a person different by nationality, ethnicity and gender? Does Philip reach out or reject the God-seeker? Such questions remain as critical issues in our day which is marked by varying degrees of prejudice, racism, oppression and hatred.
A chariot, a chance encounter, and a question that changed everything: What stands between you and your freedom? In this episode, Philip meets an Ethiopian nobleman who is searching for truth and freedom in the Scriptures. Through a divine encounter, Philip explains the gospel, leading the Ethiopian to embrace faith in Jesus and receive baptism, symbolizing his new life in Christ.Today's Bible verse is 2 Corinthians 3:17, from the King James Version.Download the Pray.com app for more Christian content including, Daily Prayers, Inspirational Testimonies, and Bedtime Bible Stories.Pray.com is the digital destination for faith. Simon Hoeppner continues his study on "The Suffering Servant" using the example of Philip who explains the passage of Isaiah 53 to the Ethiopian. Simon teaches that this shows God cares for the individual, not just the many. We are called by the Holy Spirit to be bold and obedient to His prompting, ready to respond to the Gospel.
Eastertide is the season we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The resurrection isn't just a one time event to commemorate, it is instead a world altering reality that invites us into a whole new way of living. We see this on full display for the earliest followers of Jesus who found their lives and world upturned by their surprising king who defeated death, sin, and the powers of evil not through violence but love. Jesus' self-sacrificial, other oriented love was vindicated in the resurrection and served as the way of life for early followers.

This week we're reading the story of Philip, and the Ethiopian eunuch as told in Acts 8:26-39. In that story, an angel tells Philip to approach the chariot of an Ethiopian eunuch who is heading home from his visit to the Temple in Jerusalem. When he approaches the chariot, Philip hears the eunuch reading Isaiah 53, one of the songs of the suffering servant. When the eunuch asks Phillip to help him understand, Phillip interprets the gospel for him, leading the eunuch to ask for baptism. We discuss the role of Philip in this text as a human intermediary for the Holy Spirit, going where he is called and meeting people where they are. And we discuss the eunuch, who has been seeking community elsewhere but finally finds full welcome in the community of Christians. And we wrestle with our own offerings of the welcome, and the ways that we, too, can be conduits of the Spirit, knowing when to teach and when to get out of the way.

Luke 19:10 // Matthew 9:13, 37-38 // Mark 16:15-16 // John 20:21 “…Making disciples is fairly easy. You simply bring people along in your spiritual journey. Making disciples is more about intentionality than technique: Discipleship means teaching others to read the Bible the way you read it, pray the way you pray, and tell people about Jesus the way you do. If you have Christian habits in your life worth imitating, you can be a disciple-maker. It doesn't require years of training. You just teach others to follow Christ as you follow Him.” — J.D. It's a phrase that is heard often, 'It's important to have a biblical worldview.' But what exactly does that mean? How is it lived out in everyday life? Dr. Michael Rydelnik is Academic Dean and Professor of Bible and Jewish Studies at Moody Bible Institute addresses that question using the secular and biblical approaches to marriage. Michael also answers questions about the origins of the Seder Dinner, the Ethiopian Eunuch, and approaching the symbolism in Revelation and the literal expression they represent. Fr. Mike focuses on the story of Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch and how it demonstrates the importance of having guidance when reading Scripture. Although God's Word is infallible, we can easily misunderstand it without proper interpretation, which is why we have the Magisterium of the Church. Lastly, Fr. Mike also touches on the role of persecution in the life of the Church, and St. Paul's encouragement to abide by the law of love. Today we read Acts 8, Romans 13-14, and Proverbs 27:15-17.
