SYNOPSIS:Following the enthusiastic feedback from Philip's inaugural appearance on the podcast with his episode "Embodied Intelligence: Wholeness, Sensitivity, and the Pelvic Bowl," we knew we had to bring him back! If you haven't listened to his episode yet, we highly recommend you do! In this recorded version of our live Q&A event, step into the world of the body's intelligence – delve deep into the intricacies of embodiment where our audience had the opportunity to interact directly with Philip and Ali. Enjoy a grounding meditation to start it off, offered up by Phlip as a unifying and grounding exercise as well as a basis for questions to arise. Some of the questions posed: How do you experience the thought or the mind of the body?Could you discuss the difference between our conventional understanding of vigilance and the vigilance of the present moment, and how we might underestimate its potential significance in our lives? What does it mean if we open ourselves to the information that's available and we think with all of our senses, not just our brain? Please talk about how you understand that. What is the fear or resistance to just turn ourselves over to the body as the medium for knowing the world?Philip, where are you mapping the body, considering the balance between conscious and unconscious processes? How can we navigate our conscious mind to avoid potential pitfalls? Can you elaborate on mastering the mind within the broader context, where the heart houses the mind?I felt comfortable and truthful when I was in my head, but descending to my heart felt like entering a dogfight. There's a constant tug of war between being present and feeling pulled away by a powerful force that insists I shouldn't be here. It's a struggle filled with violence as I try to stay grounded. While there's relief in being in my body, it feels temporary, like I can't stay for long. How can I navigate this internal conflict and find a sense of home within myself? What can you say of the differences or advantages of spending time relating with people living from their head and those who are living from a greater sense of wholeness and embodiment? How do we be with others from that perspective?I'm curious about your perspective on the phenomenon of projection. After spending time with someone, I often find myself experiencing emotions that I don't believe are my own. For instance, if I'm with someone who appears sad, I might leave the interaction feeling sad myself. This seems to blur the line between feeling and thinking, as I'm left questioning why I'm experiencing certain emotions. How do you understand and navigate this process of projection? How do you approach or reconcile this heightened awareness of the Earth's pain as you become more connected to your body and the Earth itself?Regarding the concept of wholeness, groundedness, and centeredness. During the exercise, as we delved deeper towards the pelvic bowl, there was a profound sense of resonance and silence that felt ancient and powerful. Can you speak to the significance of this resonance and the profound silence experienced in that moment, where it felt like one unified body rather than individual bodiesTo be an angel to the podcast, click here: To read more about the podcast, click here: MORE ALI MEZEY:Website: https://www.alimezey.comPersonal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course information:Transgenerational Healing Films: FOR MORE PHILIP SHEPHERD: https://embodiedpresent.comBIO: Philip Shepherd is recognized as a leader in the global embodiment movement. Enjoy a profound meditation gifted by Philip Shepherd at the beginning of our recent live Q&A event as a grounding exercise and basis for profound state-shifts through the geography of the body. We've provided a stand-alone version of the mediation for those of you who want to use it on a regular basis. This meditation offers a practice to explore the body's intelligence and challenge cultural beliefs about the supremacy of the mind over the body. By focusing on our centre of awareness, and connecting with the fluidity of the body's inner ocean, the meditation guides participants to center themselves first in the head, then in the heart, in the tanden and finally on the pelvic floor. Each centering allows for a unique experience and awareness of the world from that altered perspective. Participants are encouraged to soften into each experience, notice how it feels, and label it with a word to aid in remembrance. This practice offers an opportunity to ground oneself, explore different centers of awareness within the body, and attune to the world within and around them.To be an angel to the podcast, click here: To read more about the podcast, click here: MORE ALI MEZEY:Website: https://www.alimezey.comPersonal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course information:Transgenerational Healing Films: FOR MORE PHILIP SHEPHERD: https://embodiedpresent.comBIO: Philip Shepherd is recognized as a leader in the global embodiment movement. Together, Ali and Philip explore countercultural aspects of embodiment, the importance of challenging societal norms, and the need to advocate for a shift towards present-centered awareness.Central to the conversation is the profound impact of the pelvic bowl, a core element of Philip's teachings. Drawing inspiration from cultures that value the body differently, Philip highlights the concept of Hara in Japanese Noh theater. He traces the historical shift in Western culture from the belly as the thinking center to the current emphasis on the head, revealing a narrative of mistrust in the body.Sensitivity emerges as a core theme of the conversation, which Philip positions as the foundation of intelligence. Ali and Philip delve into the subtleties of staying “dropped in” to the pelvic floor, stressing the gentle and patient approach required for restoring sensitivity, especially in individuals who have experienced trauma. Throughout the episode, the exploration of embodiment, cultural shifts, and the profound connection between the body and the world converges into a call to action. The duo inspires listeners to nurture sensitivity, embrace radical wholeness, and reclaim their true intelligence, fostering the evolution of both individual and collective consciousness.EXPLORATION POINTS:Ali and Philip discuss the geography of intelligence and the significance of the pelvic bowl as the base of experiencing our wholeness.Philip traces the d/evolution of Western culture from valuing the belly as the center to the current emphasis on the head and mistrust of the body. They discuss sensitivity as the foundation of intelligence and explore the nuances of restoring sensitivity, particularly in trauma survivors.Philip unpacks the fallacy of independence, and vividly describes the self as being in constant felt-relationship with the world. The conversation ultimately advocates that we recognize and learn to live from our full intelligence as a key to cultural evolution. Three years later he decided, alongwith his fiancée, to permanently move to Canada. Determined to succeed, hegot a Bachelor of Science degree from the Universityof Toronto, went to graduate school atMcMaster University, and then built a successfulcareer as a partner in a geophysics business. Years later, Andrei came acrossthe book Body by Science, which introduced him to the scientific principle ofhigh-intensity strength training (HIT). After putting the training principlesinto practice with a group of friends, Andrei saw profound physical changes, and began learning as much as he could about high-intensity strength trainingand its unmatched health benefits. He discovered how proper exercise, and inparticular HIT, had the power to transform lives, including his own. Andreidecided to leave his highly paid career in geophysics and set up New ElementTraining, a group of premier, high-intensity strength-training studios in Toronto, Canada.NET features the largest selection of MedX equipment in Canada andspecializes in the time-efficient method of Mindful Strength Training toFailure. Whatif there were something you could do for just half an hour, once or twice aweek, that had the power to transform your well-being? We aren't promising amagic diet or a ‘secret' pill. This ‘something' is a practice that has beendeveloped in accord with the most up-to-date science, and is verified byfindings that have come to light only in the last 15 years, say Philip Shepherdand Andrei Yakovenko, the authors of Deep Fitness: The Mindful, Science-BasedStrength-Training Method to Transform Your Well-Being in Just 30 Minutes aWeek. Here's what science has found. We all know what muscle does: it moves usaround. And that was the whole story until recently, when researchersdiscovered myokines – messenger molecules created only by muscle when it works.Myokines promote longevity, bone mineral density, mental sharpness, cardiovascular health, everything. And the stronger a muscle is, the moremyokines it produces. Here's the problem.

Show Notes: Philip Shepherd is an international authority on embodiment and author of New Self, New World - Recovering our Senses in the 21st Century and Radical Wholeness - The Embodied Present and the Ordinary Grace of Being. This is a specially curated edition of a more extensive interview I had with Philip back in August of 2020. In today's conversation he shares guidance and tools for shifting from the head driven strategies of control and order to an embodied and deep connection with the present moment. He offers thought-provoking wisdom on these important questions:If our essential nature is wholeness then why do we act against the whole in service of our own best interests?Rather than striving for answers, how can we formulate meaningful questions in a world of disinformation, divisiveness, polarization and chaos? How do we stay in connection as we navigate diverse perspectives and challenging dialogues? Why do we lapse back into old patterns, and how do we choose the thing we know is better for us? How do we access our body's inherent wisdom and find creative ways forward in times of crisis and social uprising?Does Philip feel we're headed for self-termination and if so, how does he orient to that possible reality?SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Great chance to hear Philip LIVE!Saturday February 26th, 2022 at 11am MT. In October 2020, two countries, India and South Africa, that had been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 virus and its variants and by inadequate supply of personal protective equipment, diagnostic tests, and medicines, requested a waiver of intellectual property protections covering COVID-19 vaccines. Specifically, these countries are seeking a waiver that would exempt World Trade Organization (WTO) member countries from obligations related to patents, copyrights, industrial designs, and trade secrets under TRIPS (Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights). Among other things, TRIPS requires member countries to provide minimum intellectual property protections and enforcement mechanisms that support these intellectual property rights. In a move that surprised many, on May 5, 2021, United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai issued a statement announcing the current administration's support for this waiver, but initially for vaccines only rather than the additional COVID-19 health technologies covered by the waiver proposal. In Tai's announcement, she stated that “The Administration believes strongly in intellectual property protections, but in service of ending this pandemic, supports the waiver of those protections for COVID-19 vaccines.” The purpose of the waiver, as Tai notes, is to “get as many safe and effective vaccines to as many people, as fast as possible.” Since Representative Tai's statement, there has been much commentary in favor and against the waiver and the U.S. support for it, but after the most recent TRIPS Council meeting, text-based negotiations have begun on the India/South Africa proposal and a European Union communication emphasizing elimination of trade barriers, voluntary agreements, and clarifications of the TRIPS Agreement's compulsory licensing rules. In this webinar, experts in intellectual property and international trade will help explain the pros and cons of the waiver proposal, what effects it may have on the pandemic, and what other impacts the waiver may have long term.Featuring: -- Jorge Contreras, Professor of Law, University of Utah College of Law -- James Bacchus, Distinguished Professor of Global Affaris and Director, Center for Global Economic and Environmental Opportunity, University of Central Florida -- Ana Santos Rutschman, Assistant Professor, Saint Louis University School of Law -- Brook K. TEPP is based on Philip's two books – Radical Wholeness and New Self, New World – which articulate the causes, perils and challenges of our culture's disembodiment. Philip's personal journey to embodiment includes cycling alone as a teenager through Europe, the Middle East, Iran, India and Japan; studying classical Japanese Noh Theater; co-founding an interdisciplinary theatre company; and playing lead roles on stages in London, New York, Chicago and Toronto. In the non-Covid world, he travels the world sharing workshops, and running year-long Facilitators Trainings with his co-director and wife Allyson Woodrooffe. Philip Shepherd is recognized as an international authority on embodiment. His unique techniques have been developed to transform our disconnected experience of self and world, and are based on the vision articulated in his celebrated books, New Self, New World (2010) and Radical Wholeness (Nov 2017). Philip developed the practices of TEPP to help people reunite the thinking of the head with the deep, present and calm intelligence of the body. Unlike the prevailing view of embodiment – which involves sitting in the head and ‘listening to your body' – Philip's approach helps you listen to the world through the body. What the body most deeply understands is that it belongs to the world. Ultimately, TEPP is about coming home to yourself. In today's new episode, Philip shares his personal journey to understanding his path, purpose, and embodiment - and it all started with a bicycle. This journey allowed him to be wide open to the world - to nature, to people, to connection, and adventure. It allowed him to connect with himself in a new and profound way, too. On that bike he went through so many waves of understanding what it means to be human, and each one of them was luminous. As Philip shares, if you get on the bike and keep peddling, and you're headed in the right direction, and you don't stop peddling, you'll get there - and that's exactly what he's done. (9:38) Why do we lapse back into old patterns, and how do we choose the thing we know is better for us? (14:35) How do we access our body's inherent wisdom and find our personal way forward in this time of crisis and social uprising? (25:46) Do you think we're headed for self-termination, and how do you orient to that possibility? Episode Summary: The most potent activism doesn't come from the head, it comes from what the body knows and feels. It comes from some 'wrong' that your specific sensitivity feels deeply, and that’s the call. That is the world—activating you to move forward.Show Notes:Join us today for Part 1 of my conversation with Philip Shepherd. Philip is an international authority on embodiment and author of New Self, New World - Recovering our Senses in the 21st Century and Radical Wholeness - The Embodied Present and the Ordinary Grace of Being. On today's show Philip speaks to a return to wholeness, and how activism is most effective when it's coming from a place of deep embodiment. He shares his thoughts on the intersection between embodiment and social activism and responds to these thoughtful questions from listeners: If our essential nature is wholeness then how does it happen that an entity pits itself against the whole in service of its own best interests? (15:00)What does activism look like through the lens of wholeness? (23:55) Can you scale a business and stay in integrity, and if so, what does that look like? (32:15) There seems to be a movement characterizing tyranny and violence as a product of ”whiteness” - do you see this as an accurate perspective? (34:35) Ostracization and vilification of contrary points of view are common place in public discourse. How do we stay in wholeness and connection as we navigate diverse perspectives and challenging dialogues? (40:32)How does one formulate personally meaningful questions as we live in a world of disinformation, divisiveness, polarization and chaos? Play is the one activity in which the whole personality is present. The opposite of play is compliance. When there is no wholeness, there cannot be response. If you are looking for safety you will comply. The only way to connect to reality is to surrender to the wholeness. Philip Shepherd is recognized as an international authority on embodiment. His unique techniques have been developed to transform our disconnected experience of self and world, and are based on the vision articulated in his celebrated books, New Self, New World (2010) and Radical Wholeness (Nov 2017). What the body most deeply understands is that it belongs to the world. When our thinking is tempered by that understanding, we discover companionship in the world rather than alienation; we recognize guidance where before we saw only obstacles; and we ground ourselves in the security of being, rather than seeking to build security for ourselves with symbols of external value. Ultimately, TEPP is about coming home to yourself. More from Philip Shepherd * If you are LOVING my transmissions then please become a Patreon. In a stressful, chaotic world, many people feel as though their brain is restless and they can't get out of the cycle of their own thoughts. This is why today's special guest, author and bodywork expert Philip Shepherd developed a new mindfulness technique: The Embodiment Present Process, or TEPP. TEPP is a new style of mindfulness training, taking the focus from ‘listening to your body' and shifting the focus toward listening to yourself through the actions and feelings within the body. For those who already practice some form of mindfulness training, such as meditation or yoga, this practice pairs perfectly to bring awareness and connection back to the individual and connect them with a higher purpose. Philip Shepherd is recognized as an international authority on embodiment. His unique techniques have been developed to transform our experience of self and world, and are based on the vision articulated in his celebrated books, New Self New World and Radical Wholeness. The approach he takes heals the frantic, restless pace of the intelligence in the head, which tends to run on overdrive, by uniting it with the deep, present and calm intelligence of the body. This is an antidote to the prevailing view of embodiment, which involves sitting in the head and ‘listening to the body'; by contrast, Philip's approach helps us listen to the world through the body. His personal path to understanding has been shaped by his adventures as a teenager, when he cycled alone through Europe, the Middle East, India and Japan; by his deep commitment to and studies of bodywork; by his experiences as an actor, playing lead roles on stages in London, New York, Chicago and Toronto; and by the burning desire for freedom that has illuminated his entire life. http://www.tepp.life

In today's episode, we talk with Philip Shepherd – a recognized international authority on embodiment. Philip travels the world teaching The Embodied Present Process™ (TEPP), which is a unique set of practices he developed for getting us out of our heads and reconnected with the profound intelligence of the body. He is the author of two ground-breaking books, New Self, New World: Recovering Our Senses in the Twenty-first Century, and the newly published Radical Wholeness: The Embodied Present and the Ordinary Grace of Being. The books draw on a lifetime of research and experience and have been widely acclaimed for their original vision. Philip has a passion for adventure and exploration, and throughout his life it has been coupled with deep connection to the body's intelligence, and a burning desire for freedom. At 18 those passions led him from his native Canada to cycle alone through Europe, the Middle East, Iran, India and Japan. He studied classical Noh Theater in Japan, and has since designed and built several houses, co-founded an arts magazine, Onion, co-founded an interdisciplinary theater company, taught workshops on embodied thinking and presence, wrote two internationally produced plays and a television documentary, and earned a reputation as a corporate coach. Philip has also been an actor his whole life, and has played lead roles on stages in London, New York, Chicago and Toronto. In our conversation, Philip shares the essence of The Embodied Present Process™ (TEPP), where it comes from, and why it is so essential for our health and well-being. Through TEPP, we can tune into the profound intelligence of our body, bringing us into greater clarity, peace and a deeper connection with the world. Philip further explains the myth of independence and how the true path to wisdom lies in recognizing how we are all one and getting out of our head and into our body. Key Takeaways Our culture incorrectly defines the individual from a state of independence, as if you were independent from the world around you. When your primary relationship is with the self, you lose the richness of relationship with the present and the world around you, and the wholeness to which you belong. We must rekindle the connection between the brain and the intelligence of the body. To live forever is to live in the present because the present is eternal. To live in the head is to experience the body mechanically. To say we have 5 senses is a construct of our culture to maintain the boundary of self. Real listening is felt in the body – in that attunement to the world, you find guidance in every moment of your life. 8,000 years before Stonehenge and the PyramidsThe rocks of Gobekli Tepe (pronounced Go-beckly Tepp-ay) are a curiosity, and curiosity rocks. Travel with me to that ancient land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in southeastern Turkey. A shepherd wandering on the hillside where grows a solitary Mulberry tree, spies the top of an oblong rock that appears to have been shaped by human hands. He notices others like it in a pattern. He returns to the village and tells what he has seen. The digging begins. The year is 1994. “Gobekli Tepe is the most important archaeological site in the world.” – David Lewis-Williams, Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg “Gobekli Tepe changes everything.” – Ian Hodder, Stanford University. Stonehenge was built 5000 years ago in 3,000 BC and the pyramids of Giza in 2,500 BC. Carbon dating of organic matter adhering to the megaliths of Gobekli Tepe reveal it to be 12,000 years old, meaning it was built around 10,000–9,000 BC. “Gobekli is thus the oldest such site in the world, by a mind-numbing margin. It is so old that it predates settled human life. It is pre-pottery, pre-writing, pre-wheel, pre-everything. Gobekli hails from a part of human history that is unimaginably distant.” – Tom Cox Perhaps the strangest part of the Gobekli story is that around 8,000 BC, its inhabitants entombed their temple under thousands of tons of earth, creating the artificial hills on which the unnamed shepherd walked in 1994. It was a task of unspeakable labor. No one knows why Gobekli was buried. “The modern history of Gobekli Tepe begins in 1964, when a team of American archaeologists combed this remote province of southeast Turkey. The archaeologists noted that several odd-looking hills were blanketed with thousands of broken flints, a sure sign of ancient human activity. Despite this, the US scientists drifted away and did no excavating. Today, they must feel like the publisher who rejected the first Harry Potter manuscript.” – Sean Thomas Thirty years later, a shepherd saw a pattern of rocks peeking through the soil and said, “I wonder…” Google Gobekli Tepe and you'll find that everyone mentions the shepherd but none can name him. I want to locate that shepherd and bring him to Wizard Academy. For it's people like him – men and women without credentials, funding or permission – who notice the daily miracles that surround us and point them out for all to see. Galileo, Da Vinci, Buckminster Fuller, and the shepherd of Gobekli Tepe; to these servants of Curiosity, I give my highest Salute. Roy H. Williams
