This is a "Shortcut" episode. It’s a shortened version of this week’s more detailed full episode, which is also available on our feed. In 2016, a woman reported that she was sexually assaulted at a birthday party in the small western Victorian town of Balmoral. The case divided the close-knit community and led to a complex legal process involving an appeal, a retrial and a key witness who later changed her evidence, though two juries ultimately found the men guilty of rape. Journalists Andy Burns and Charlotte King join us to discuss their investigation for the ABC podcast Hometown Boys and the impact the case had on the town. Mascara is over. Yes, it’s joined side parts as beauty cringe, according to the ghost lashes trend that Em Vernem has embraced. We’re unpacking: Are bare eyes cool or do they leave some of us looking like 'elderly babies'? Plus, the fear of public speaking has morphed into something else: the fear of speaking in public, full stop. So why is small talk dying, and does it matter? We’re asking: Is a quick chat about the weather actually the secret to a happier life? And, meet the internet’s new favorite literal girlboss — a 13-year-old skincare CEO who edits her COO mom’s 'cringe' captions. While Em feels like a failure by comparison, Holly Wainwright is fascinated by the 'corporatisation of kids' and brand-building curriculums. But is it smart? In an AI world, has 'building a business' become more important than actually knowing things? In other business, Clare Stephens wants to know why the word 'matrescence' isn't in the dictionary yet? And, of course, recommendations: Holly recommends The Walkers podcast by Tortoise Media & The Observer — a wild investigation into the author of The Salt Path. Emily recommends the book Half His Age by Jennette McCurdy. Clare recommends Hometown Boys, a six-part investigative podcast from ABC’s Background Briefing. In the back of our minds we all know that there's very little that's real about reality TV… but you might be shocked to discover just how deceptive – and ethically questionable – some of the television tactics really are. So are the humans behind these characters we love to hate really so awful? And how does being cast as a TV villain impact a person's mental health and life outside the show? And a content note: this episode contains discussion of suicide and mental health. Guest: Annika Blau for Background Briefing
Death is something we don't really like to think about. But when you or someone you love becomes ill, it's important to be able to have a conversation about end of life care in a respectful and informed way. Despite being legal, there are still obstacles to accessing voluntary assisted dying or VAD, and because no one likes to talk about it, these issues are often discovered when it's too late. So how can we ensure those who want to make the choice to end their life can do so with safety and dignity?Guest: Annika Blau for Background Briefing

47 years ago, on a warm summer's night in Melbourne, Susan Bartlett and Suzanne Armstrong were stabbed to death in their home in Easey Street, Collingwood. Suzanne's 16 month-old son was asleep in his cot at the time. The double homicide left the community shocked and detectives rattled, as several promising early leads gradually petered out. Eventually, the case went cold. To this day, the Easey Street murders is still one of Australia's most confronting cold cases: a frenzied crime shadowed by strange twists of fact and fate. A million-dollar reward for information has failed to lead to an arrest, no one has ever been charged, and critical questions remain unanswered. Did the young women know their killer, or did they die in a brutal, random attack? Why has their murderer never been found? Journalist Helen Thomas has been investigating Susan and Suzanne's deaths for more than a decade, initially for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Background Briefing programme and then for her book, Murder On Easey Street. Now Helen has delved into the case again for a brand new, original podcast made for Casefile Presents. In Casefile Presents: The Easey Street Murders, Helen explores the crime and the investigation that followed. She speaks with the young women's family and friends, potential witnesses living in Easey Street who were never interviewed by detectives – and the retired police who were first at the crime scene in January, 1977 and remained haunted by it even now.
