Edie, get some ice cream! We're celebrating 2009's “Grey Gardens” with that fine HBO polish, impeccable prosthetics, a sweeping score, the wild range of Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore working harder than anyone to bring Little Edie Beale to life in all her glory, misery and resilience. Jeanne Tripplehorn's Jackie O, Malcolm Gets's Gould and Ken Howard's Phelan Beale, to say nothing of those Maysles and that Baldwin, buoy the Beales through a thoroughly quotable, heartbreaking and hilarious rise to cult stardom. Australia’s most listened to radio show has breached decency standards, the media watchdog has found. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) launched a formal investigation into the Kyle and Jackie O show after receiving a listener complaint in June. It has now found segments of the show – hosted by Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson – “would be considered offensive to any reasonable person listening to the broadcast”. Today, we’ll explain everything you need to know about this investigation, where it came from, what it found, and what it means for the popular breakfast radio duo. Something To Talk About is continuing to publish across the summer break, and will be back with a brand new episode on January 12. In the meantime, we are revisiting some of your favourites from the 50 episodes we released over the past year. Today’s conversation is with Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson, which originally aired April 27, 2024. *** For 23 years, Kyle Sandilands and Jackie “O” Henderson have dominated radio airwaves in Sydney, and having appeared on various TV shows over the years, have become one of Australia’s most well-known double acts. But despite their infamy, they very rarely do interviews together - and yet for today’s episode of Something To Talk About they agreed to sit down on the other side of the microphone to join host Sarrah Le Marquand for a no-holds-barred conversation that veers from the outrageous to the hilarious, and from the emotional to the unexpected. On the eve of their show’s much talked about and risky expansion into Melbourne, they open up about what makes their relationship tick - both on and off air, whether they have any regrets over the controversies they have weathered over the years, and how they feel about being in very different chapters of their lives, with Kyle settled down as a happily married father just as a Jackie is hitting her stride as one of the most sought after single women in the country. And, in one of the many surprising moments in the conversation, they both ponder an unlikely question: is Kyle Sandilands actually a feminist? The Kyle & Jackie O Show airs from 6am weekdays on KIIS 1065 Sydney and KIIS 101.1 Melbourne. You can also listen via the iHeart app or wherever you get your podcasts. Dunak has the revealing story of what happened when Jackie, eager to protect her privacy, took the photographer to court in 1972. Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O Henderson have dominated the breakfast slot in Sydney for almost two decades. But their show's recent expansion into the Melbourne market has tanked. Jackie O was deep into a years-long addiction to pills and alcohol until one phone call changed her life. There's a reason Jackie O kept her addiction to pain medication and alcohol a secret for so long: shame. Jackie O was deep into a years-long addiction to pills and alcohol until one phone call changed her life. There's a reason Jackie O kept her addiction to pain medication and alcohol a secret for so long: shame. But now, she wants to share her story of recovery and healing with the world and to help other people get the help they need - and so she's sharing the hard truths of the years she spent struggling. Jackie and her best friend Gemma sit down for a searingly honest conversation with Mia Freedman about how Jackie found herself at her low point and finally had to admit her addiction to Gemma - and how Gemma got Jackie to rehab without the press finding out. This is a story about addiction and recovery, but it's also a story of the life-saving quality of friendship. You can hear part two of Mia's conversation here. Jackie is donating the proceeds from the sale of her memoir to Odyssey House - you can learn more about them here. You can find Jackie O's memoir, The Whole Truth, here. You can learn more about Besties - Jackie & Gemma's project - here. And if this episode triggered anything for you and you need someone to talk to, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14. Subscribe to Mamamia One of the most successful women in Australian media has surprised everyone by opening up about her serious addiction issues and a stint in rehab. And it reminds us of something we repeatedly choose to forget. We discuss Jackie O's viral and very vulnerable moment as the star confirms that proceeds from her memoir The Whole Truth will be donated to addiction treatment centre Odyssey House. Plus, you've probably seen the clip of the Irish movie star Saoirse Ronan sitting on The Graham Norton Show couch, shutting everyone up with a truth bomb that resonated with women everywhere. But what wasn't said? And, screw getting a mentor, don't dream big and really, really don't trust your gut. The best career advice that's exactly the opposite of all the stuff you've ever been told. Fewer people in the world had access to the personal moments experienced by Steve Wasserman, Heyday Books publisher, former LA Times Book Review editor and former editor at several of the nation’s most prominent book publishing houses. In his latest book, “Tell Me Something, Tell Me Anything, Even If It's a Lie,” he details his close encounters with a handful of some of the most significant people in the 20th century, including Jackie Kennedy, Susan Sontag, Christopher Hitchens, Gore Vidal, Barbra Streisand, Huey Newton and others. Wasserman describes these accounts, or portraits, as focusing on people who “inspired me to do what I could, however modestly, to live a life of passionate engagement.” From the intimate details of a lunch with Jackie O to a deathbed conversation with writer and journalist Hitchens, Wasserman features a multitude of essays that cover a range of issues from politics to literature to culture and life. One memory of Wasserman included how he “never experienced Susan Sontag as a hostage to nostalgia.” Wasserman found inspiration in that and thought “it was a great, great lesson not to become pickled in your own prejudices such that you couldn't be open to the world.” Scheer attests that these portraits are brilliant, especially when dealing with controversial figures. He tells Wasserman, “These are famous intellectuals, but you humanize them, and you involve your own criticism.”

Linda Schlossberg, author of Life in Miniature, who teaches at Harvard, joins RTB to read and explore one of her favorite Alice Munro stories, "Miles City, Montana" in our new series, Recall This Story. The discussion ranges widely. This story first appeared in The New Yorker (1/6/1985) and was reprinted in The Progress of Love (1986) one Munro's many many short story collections. In 2013 Munro became not just the first Canadian Nobel laureate for literature, but also the only person ever to win the prize for short fiction. When her name comes up in 2024, most of us don't think first about the Nobel. In a July 8 article in The Toronto Star, Munro's daughter Andrea Robin Skinner revealed that during her childhood she was abused by her stepfather Gerard Fremlin, Munro's second husband. She also reported that Munro herself ignored or minimized the enormity of those crimes. Those facts will inevitably shape how future readers think about Munro's work. Linda and John, though, recorded this conversation in June, 2024, before the news broke. Mentioned in the episode Edgar Allen Poe had an account (in a review of Nathaniel Hawthorne's short works) of short stories as compact and singular in their focus; also of his notion of "the imp of the perverse." The 19th-century Scottish novelist and short-storyist James Hogg, "The Ettrick Shepherd" is one of Munro's Scottish ancestors: John has written about him. Munro's Books is the thriving bookstore Alice Munro co-founded.
