Your kid comes home devastated after being left out, dropped, or caught in the middle of a friendship blowup. You may want to help, but don't know what to say—or whether you should step in at all. Take heart: this episode will help you navigate the situation with confidence. In this encore “Best of Ask Lisa” compilation, Dr. Lisa Damour has curated her most essential guidance on friendship conflict, bullying, and social drama — the stuff that can make the tween and teen years so painful for kids and so hard to watch as a parent. Whether your child is being targeted by peers, doing the excluding, or trying to navigate a friendship that's run its course, you'll walk away knowing exactly what to say and how to help them through it with calm, clarity, and compassion.

Welcome to Academia Unlocked, our literary deep-dive series on Book Talk for BookTok! In this episode, we kick off our three-part series discussing The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. With over 13 years of combined academic training in literature and creative writing, we walk listeners through the foundational tools of reading beyond the surface. The book community talks about the "decline of literacy" constantly, but almost no one stops to define what literary literacy actually is or how to build it. This series exists to change that. One of the most common ways readers come to The Joy Luck Club is as an immigrant family drama, a moving novel about mothers and daughters caught between two cultures. And it is that. But Amy Tan built something more architecturally daring: sixteen interlocking stories, four mothers and four daughters, arranged around a mahjong table so the structure itself mirrors the divide it describes. This series digs into both. Whether you first read this novel because it was assigned to you, came to it through the 1993 film and never picked up the book, or only know Jing-mei Woo's name from a Google search, this series will give you the critical lens to engage with Amy Tan's Joy Luck Club with more depth, more confidence, and a lot more to say. Last year, a few concerned North Texas residents marked the Fourth of July with a noise demonstration in solidarity with those held in ICE custody. Ready to read beyond the plot? In this episode of Book Talk for BookTok, Jac and Amy break down literary criticism for beginners. If you've ever finished a romance or romantasy novel and felt like there was more going on beneath the surface but couldn't quite name it, this episode is your starting point. We're covering our 8 favorite critical literary lenses — the same tools used in academic literary analysis, translated into something any BookTok reader can actually use on their next read: Archetypal Criticism — spotting universal characters, symbols, and story patterns Ecocriticism — reading nature, setting, and environment as meaningful, not just backdrop Feminist Criticism — examining gender roles, power, and representation Marxist Criticism — unpacking class, wealth, and power structures in the story Narratological Criticism — analyzing how the story is told: structure, voice, and point of view Postcolonial Criticism — reading colonialism, identity, and cultural power dynamics Psychoanalytical Criticism — exploring character psychology, desire, and the subconscious Queer Theory — examining gender, sexuality, and identity outside the norm For each lens, we give you a quick-hit breakdown: what it is, the core question to ask yourself while reading, and the specific things to watch for in the text that signal it's worth applying. Whether you're deep into a romantasy series or picking apart your next spicy romance novel, these tools will help you read with more intention — and talk about books with way more depth. Click here for our Critical Literary Lenses Cheat Sheet. Perfect for: BookTok readers, romantasy fans, book club hosts, English majors (former or current), and anyone who wants to talk about books like they mean it. Skip to the updates: (50:00)On January 24, 2023, Patrick Clancy left his family's home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, to run a few errands, expecting to return less than an hour later. Instead, he came home to an unimaginable tragedy. The house was eerily silent, and outside he found his wife, Lindsay Clancy, seriously injured. She told him the children were in the basement.Patrick rushed downstairs, where he discovered his three children, 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan, had been strangled with exercise bands. Cora and Dawson died that night, while Callan succumbed to his injuries several days later. Lindsay survived after jumping from a second-story window and was later charged with the murders of her children. Her defense argues that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and should not be held criminally responsible. Her trial is now underway, with her husband expected to testify on her behalf.Read our blog for this case - https://truecrimesocietyblog.com/2023/02/27/lindsay-clancy-strangled-her-three-children-with-exercise-bands/This episode was originally first released in 2023. We are re-releasing it now to coincide with the start of Lindsay Clancy's trial. Proceedings in the trial began on July 20 and are expected to run for up to 8 weeks. The Hollywood Reporter recently argued that today's stars all have the same "slop face"—but we think they're looking at the wrong group. We debate whether actors like Barry Keoghan and Zendaya actually prove Hollywood still celebrates distinctive faces, and whether the homogenized look is more of an influencer and creator phenomenon than an acting one. Plus, we weigh in on The Cut's "No Mascara Summer" trend, why Pamela Anderson, Alicia Keys, and Gigi Hadid can pull it off, and why we'll be hanging onto our mascara wands for the foreseeable future. On July 15, 1992, 23-year-old Rachel Nickell was murdered on Wimbledon Common in broad daylight, with her two-year-old son as the only witness. With no DNA at the scene, police fixated on the wrong man, building an infamous honey trap operation around a profiler's hunch while the real killer stayed free. It took sixteen years and a DNA breakthrough to finally get justice. Mascara is over. Yes, it’s joined side parts as beauty cringe, according to the ghost lashes trend that Em Vernem has embraced. We’re unpacking: Are bare eyes cool or do they leave some of us looking like 'elderly babies'? Plus, the fear of public speaking has morphed into something else: the fear of speaking in public, full stop. So why is small talk dying, and does it matter? We’re asking: Is a quick chat about the weather actually the secret to a happier life? And, meet the internet’s new favorite literal girlboss — a 13-year-old skincare CEO who edits her COO mom’s 'cringe' captions. While Em feels like a failure by comparison, Holly Wainwright is fascinated by the 'corporatisation of kids' and brand-building curriculums. But is it smart? In an AI world, has 'building a business' become more important than actually knowing things? In other business, Clare Stephens wants to know why the word 'matrescence' isn't in the dictionary yet? And, of course, recommendations: Holly recommends The Walkers podcast by Tortoise Media & The Observer — a wild investigation into the author of The Salt Path. Emily recommends the book Half His Age by Jennette McCurdy. Clare recommends Hometown Boys, a six-part investigative podcast from ABC’s Background Briefing. Strap in, friends! Today’s episode is a wild ride! We’ve got science experiments, buffet serums and a rant about toxic beauty misinformation… Leigh Campbell and Kelly McCarren are answering your burning questions, from smudgeproof mascaras to suit every budget and tried-and-tested recommendations for "everything" serums to streamline your routine. But first, beauty news correspondents Mollie and Cass ask the question… are we being gaslit by our hairdressers? New hair-related news suggests the old ‘trimming your hair to help it grow faster’ advice is actually a myth. Plus, we unpack the ‘Aussie Girl Glam’ aesthetic trending on TikTok, and why it’s actually a lie (or at least, not as effortless as Americans might think!). Leigh and Kelly explain why you need a specific type of mascara to avoid panda-eye smudging, and share a comprehensive list of the best affordable mascaras. They also answer a listener's question about ‘everything’ serums and whether you can get away with using one serum morning and night in your routine. The answer is yes… and no. Finally, Kelly has a bone to pick with a particular beauty app and the spreading of misinformation, while Leigh shares the results of a beauty science experiment involving leftover skincare and her scalp. In today's episode of Georgio Says, we are breaking down a pivotal mid-season episode of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. We start in the Hamptons where Dorit Kemsley faces every shopper's nightmare: a declined credit card in front of Rachel Zoe and Kyle Richards. We discuss whether this was a genuine fraud alert or a sign of the deeper financial "gatekeeping" Dorit is facing in her divorce from PK.We also dive into the emotional fallout for Erika Jayne as she faces a combined $35 million in legal and tax bills. We analyze her powerful session with her therapist and that "iconic" mascara-streaked crying moment that took us all back to the Girardi era. Plus, we discuss Rachel Zoe's brutal honesty about her marriage ending, her surprising confession about a past mistake, and why Kyle Richards seems to be struggling with this "new normal" for her friend group. Finally, we have major updates on Mary Cosby's decision to move forward with RHOSLC Season 7 filming following the tragic loss of her son, and Kenya Moore's response to the headlines regarding her salon's future. For More Information visit georgiotakounakis.comFollow me on Socials:Instagram - @georgiosaysTikTok - @georgiosaysThreads - @georgiosaysGet more scoop by listening to my Podcast - Georgio Says Hosted on Acast. Today's puzzle had a wry, perfect-for-a-Monday theme: if it was a hat, it would definitely be stylish and arranged at a rakish angle. We were surprised, tickled, and put into full chortle mode by, respectively, 1D, Magic charms, MOJOS (assuredly not on our Monday crossword bingo card); 5D, The eyes may have it, MASCARA; and 24A, Run out of clothes?, STREAK.Besides the crossword, in honor of Monday we have picked our JAMCOTWA™️ (Jean And Mike Crossword Of The Week Award), and we challenge you, dear reader/listener, to see if you can guess which one we picked.Show note imagery: JACKSONHOLE, where snow removal never stops
