Episode 55 This week we continue our coverage of the Ghost Train fire that occurred in July of 1979 at Luna Park in Sydney, Australia. The fire ultimately claimed 7 lives and investigators initially told the public it was an accidental electrical fire. However, an electrical engineer showed up at the inquest explaining that there was no way this fire was an electrical fire. Many people believe it was intentional arson arranged by an organized crime boss that wanted the valuable real estate upon which Luna Park sat. Episode 54 In July of 1979, seven people would walk through the iconic clown face gates at the Luna Park amusement park in Sydney, Australia but they would not walk out. That July night, a horrific fire occurred in the Ghost Train ride that would claim the lives of six children and one adult. The fire was devastating and despite the nearly total destruction of the site, investigators would announce less than 24 hours after the fire that they'd identified the cause, an electrical fault. However, one man spent the next 3 decades of his life on a crusade to prove that the fire was not a tragic accident but was intentionally set. Rose Tang is a musician, multidisciplinary artivist, and event curator who leads over 30 groups in New York and Seattle. Her music, described by record labels and critics as experimental, free jazz, post-punk, noise, and "Weird Shit", blends diverse influences and unconventional sounds. A Mongol from Sichuan, Rose plays piano, electric guitar, and percussion, while also performing vocals, spoken word, and movement. Her music has been released by ESP-Disk' and 577 Records, and she has organized and hosted concerts in New York and California. Beyond music, Tang has performed stand-up comedy at the Peek Pique Peak Festival at The Brick theater in New York. Her paintings, sculptures, photography, and performance art have been exhibited in Berlin, Los Angeles, and New York. Previously, Rose was a decorated journalist, named Best Local Journalist by the Society of Publishers in Asia and recognized as a Champion for Freedom of Speech by the Visual Artists Guild in the U.S. She taught journalism at Princeton University and worked for CNN, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and numerous media outlets across the U.S., Australia, Hong Kong, and China.

A must read for a reality check is the ABC, as in the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and their exploration of the New Zealand vs Australian economy. Normally the ABC, like a lot of public broadcasters, tease you with a headline and end up concluding nothing so they can claim to be balanced. Not so in this case. Gareth Hutchens is your author, and the headline is "Inflation has fallen in NZ and Aus - but which is faring better?" It's always instructive to read specific comparisons, look at the wider picture, and crunch the numbers, and this piece does that. Boy does it do that. It starts with a clue - "New Zealand's economy is in recession. Australia's economy is not in recession." He then involves the Reserve Bank. Our cash rate peaked at 5.5% while Australia's peaked at 4.35%. In unemployment, New Zealand's got to 5.1% and is probably still climbing. Australia's is under 4%. New Zealand's labour force hasn't grown in the past 12 months. Australia's labour force has been consistently growing for the past 12 months. In the past three years Australia's economy hasn't recorded a single quarter of negative growth. New Zealand's economy has three quarters of zero growth and three quarters of negative growth. We've just experienced six consecutive months of negative growth. When it comes to the Reserve Bank the article points out the respective RB's pursued different approaches to employment, as regards their approach to inflation. The approach, according to the Australian Reserve Bank, was to preserve as many of the jobs that have been created in recent years as they could. Here's the last line in the article; "and thousands of Kiwis have revealed which strategy they prefer by buying a plane ticket to Australia". I think most of us could have guessed all of this. But put it in words, with stats and graphs and lay it bare and a more depressing, debilitating, deflating and anger-inducing set of numbers would be hard to find. ABC chair Kim Williams has been slammed for recent comments made about broadcasters like Joe Rogan, as the national broadcaster undergoes a wave of structural changes. During his first Press Club address, Kim Williams took aim at the podcaster, saying commentators such as Rogan “prey on fear”. Mr Williams was there to deliver a speech calling for greater investment in the ABC, which he said had lost $150 million a year over the past decade, and to talk about the importance of public broadcasting in an age of disinformation designed to sow division. Williams' tenure as ABC chair comes at a time of deep disruption for the broadcaster, with the departure of many beloved presenters sparking questions about the competency of management. 47 years ago, on a warm summer's night in Melbourne, Susan Bartlett and Suzanne Armstrong were stabbed to death in their home in Easey Street, Collingwood. Suzanne's 16 month-old son was asleep in his cot at the time. The double homicide left the community shocked and detectives rattled, as several promising early leads gradually petered out. Eventually, the case went cold. To this day, the Easey Street murders is still one of Australia's most confronting cold cases: a frenzied crime shadowed by strange twists of fact and fate. A million-dollar reward for information has failed to lead to an arrest, no one has ever been charged, and critical questions remain unanswered. A U.S. official said that the attack took place overnight at Tower 22, a small outpost near the Syria border. The drone struck living quarters for the troops, contributing to the high casualties, a U.S. official said. Singh did not specify when the response would occur or what it would look like. 3:45pm- While speaking with reporters, National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby denied that President Joe Biden will consider his polling numbers before retaliating against Iran. 3:50pm- While appearing on CNBC, Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley blamed Iranian-backed militia aggression on the Biden Administration's decision to lift sanctions on Iran—resulting in greater economic success for the Iranian regime which has, consequently, led to greater funding of terror groups in the region. 4:05pm- According to a new poll from Redfield & Wilton Strategies, 18% of voters would significantly consider casting their ballot for a presidential candidate endorsed by singer Taylor Swift. In 2020, Swift accused Donald Trump of “stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism” and vowed to vote him out of office. 4:15pm- According to a report from Rebecca Kern of Politico, pro-Biden PACs like Priorities USA have been paying TikTok influencers to push messaging friendly towards President Joe Biden's reelection efforts. Interestingly, TikTok's official policy is to ban political advertising—so why are these ads permitted to run? In a video that has gone viral, TikTok influencer Trevor Abney alleges that a political group offered him $50,000 to post a video glorifying the Biden Administration's economy. In 2018 the law societies of Ontario and British Columbia refused to credential Trinity Western University's law school because the university makes students take a vow not to engage in sex outside marriage, traditionally defined.
