Hannah Upp, a 32-year-old teacher, disappeared from St. Thomas on September 14, 2017, after a swim, amidst Hurricanes Irma and Maria. She had dissociative fugue, a condition causing identity loss, and had vanished twice before—once in 2008 in New York, found in the Hudson River after three weeks, and in 2012 in Maryland, found in a creek after two days—both times with no memory. Her 2017 disappearance left her clothes and car at Sapphire Beach, but despite extensive searches, she wasn't found. Theories include drowning, fleeing on a ship, or staging her exit, but none are proven. Her mother remains hopeful; Hannah, now 39, is still missing. In this episode, we are delighted to welcome Marisa Kurimbokus, who was announced as the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year 2024 at the end of last year. In the podcast, we follow Marisa's journey from primary school, where a teacher dropped what I can only assume was a casual comment, but it is one that sticks with her to this day. Through secondary school, where Marisa describes her journey through a range of subjects, including A Level design and technology. And chauffeuring her friend to a lecture only for serendipity to step in and have other ideas. We first met Marisa when she was with Triumph Motorcycles. She was then a design engineer helping to organise and run the now sadly defunct Triumph Design Awards. She takes us through her career journey, which has been wide and varied, working in various sectors before arriving at her current role as Head of Engineering at Raeon. Finally, we discuss the recently awarded IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year accolade and how Marisa wants to use the spotlight this affords her to encourage more young women to be brave and explore a career in engineering. In the conversation you will hear Marisa's passion for what she does, which comes across in bucket loads. I know you will enjoy this conversation, so sit back, grab the dog for a walk or take us on your commute as you listen to Designed for Life in conversation with Marisa Kurimbokus.https://www.raeon.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/marisa-kurimbokus-fwes-ceng-imeche/https://youngwomenengineer.theiet.org/

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Nkrumah Mensah , author of the book Anne of Survivor. Nkrumah Mensah: mother of two, lover of Star Trek and Shakespeare, anime enthusiast, and ballroom dancer adds another tagline to her name . . . novelist. Born into a long line of storytellers and with a desire to share her tales with the world, Nkrumah is the first in her family to bring her characters to the written page. In a mystical place called Greensboro, in the zany land of North Carolina, she works in commercial construction by day and toils on her writing passion at night. An English graduate from Mary Baldwin College, Anne of Survivor, begins her epic journey into the world of YA publishing. In my book review, I stated Anne of Survivor is an amazing young adult historical romance - and despite my age (well past young adult), I couldn't put this book down! Anne is a young, privileged girl who simply doesn't see life in the same way as her parents. When her father punishes her for her behavior toward a potential suitor, Anne leaves her home and ends up working as a crew member on a ship - but not before meeting a young prostitute that she sets on the straight and narrow. Anne has guts and gumption and soon discovers that she more strength than she knew. But what will she do when she realizes she has feelings for her captain? And what of the captain who is not what he seems? And Anne's family who finds themselves entwined with Anne's young friend? The story has many twists and turns and is the first in a series. A definite must-read. Was Mary, the mother of Jesus, truly a virgin? If so, was the virgin birth a literal fulfillment of Isaiah 7:14? Or was this the furthest thing from the mind of the Prophet Isaiah? Dr. Seth Postell, Academic Dean of Israel College of the Bible will be on today's episode to discuss the meaning of this crucial text. Dr. Postell is the Academic Dean of Israel College of the Bible in Israel, an educational ministry of ONE FOR ISRAEL. Dr. Postell completed his PhD in Hebrew Bible under the mentorship of Dr. John Sailhamer. He also studied at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and did post-graduate studies on literary approaches to the Hebrew Bible under leading Israeli scholars at Bar Ilan University in Ramat Gan. He has authored or coauthored several books including Adam as Israel (2011), Reading Moses, Seeing Jesus (2017) and essays in The Moody Handbook of Messianic Prophecy (2020), The Handbook of the Jewish Roots of the Christian Faith (2021), Reading the Psalms Theologically (2023). Because of Dr. Postell's interest in inner-biblical interpretation and the New Testament's use of the Tanakh, he is the perfect guest for today's program. In this conversation, Dr. Paul D. Weaver and Dr. Seth Postell discuss the current situation in Israel, the impact of recent conflicts on ministry, and delve into the theological implications of Isaiah 7:14, particularly the interpretation of the Hebrew words 'Alma' and 'Betula'. They explore the significance of these terms in the context of biblical prophecy and the broader implications for understanding the virgin birth of Jesus. In this conversation, Dr. Paul D. Weaver and Seth Postell delve into the interpretation of the term 'Alma' in Isaiah 7:14, discussing its implications for understanding the virgin birth of Jesus. They explore the lexical meaning of 'Alma', the contextual significance of Isaiah's prophecy, and the fulfillment of this prophecy in the New Testament, particularly in the Gospel of Matthew. The discussion also addresses the debate surrounding the concept of double fulfillment in prophetic texts and emphasizes the importance of understanding the original Hebrew context. The conversation concludes with reflections on the significance of these interpretations in the context of celebrating the birth of Jesus as the Messiah.

What happens when justice becomes a twisted game of power and corruption? In Letcher County, Kentucky, the scandalous tale of former deputy Ben Fields, convicted of using his authority to exploit female inmates, seemed shocking enough. But when District Judge Kevin Mullins was fatally shot by Sheriff Shawn "Mickey" Stines in his own chambers, the case took a darker turn. Allegations of secret recordings, judicial misconduct, and power plays have exposed a seedy underbelly of the justice system. As new revelations emerge about Mullins' alleged illicit activities, including manipulating cases for personal gain, the focus shifts to the potential complicity of others in the courthouse. Did the sheriff act out of a sudden, heated realization, or was he protecting his family from something far more sinister? With a federal lawsuit and explosive evidence surfacing, every verdict and sentence tied to Mullins is now under scrutiny. Is this a case of justice served, or has a deeper corruption yet to be uncovered? #TrueCrime #JudicialCorruption #HiddenKillers #BenFields #KevinMullins #ShawnStines #JusticeOrRevenge Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Evolutionary psychologist, Doug Lisle, PhD discusses listener questions with host, Nathan Gershfeld. In today's show, Dr. Lisle discusses the concept of Beating Your Genes and applying evolutionary psychology as a therapist, and then he answers listener questions on dating, dietary disagreement, and mutual decision making in relationships. 0:00 Teasers and Intro 1:56 Applying evolutionary psychology in a therapy practice 25:05 Beating your Genes 28:05 Young woman dating a wealthy man but feeling guilty from all of the gifts 50:34 Husband and Vegan Wife have a great relationship but there is strain around what food to feed their baby 59:10 Women may feel more secure with their mate when he's right 70% of the time 1. Three months ago, I started dating a very rich man. I am not at all a gold digger and I was not looking for a man at all when I met him. He treats me well and spoils me. However, I feel guilty accepting his gifts and money and not giving him anything in return. I'm 25 years old and a student. For my birthday he bought me thousands of dollars worth of jewelry while I bought him a tie. I felt so bad for not being able to buy him something more expensive. I feel like our relationship is unbalanced and feel guilty every time he spends money on me. I know lots of girls who would love to be in my situation and they definitely wouldn't feel guilty. What's wrong with me? How can I stop feeling guilty and just enjoy my time with him? 2. My husband and I are in a magic 10% relationship and we have a one year old baby. I am plant based vegan and he is not. I never thought this would be a problem before we had kids but now it's putting a huge strain on our relationship. I'm the one who does the most child rearing and so our baby started eating 100% whole foods plant based like me. My husband however thinks that veganism is not healthy for babies so he insists on giving her eggs, meat etc for her brain development. Maybe I have OCD when it comes to healthy eating but I am in such emotional pain when I see him feeding the baby meat. We fight all the time over this and if we continue like this we will end up divorced, which I don't want to happen because I know I was so in love with him before we had a baby. What should I do? How can I save my marriage? 3. When it comes to females feeling more secure when their males make better decisions 70% of the time - does this apply to all decisions? Like: raising children, cooking, the finances, car repair, household operations, cleaning, travel planning, etc? Are males most comfortable when their female partners make better decisions than them 30% of the time? What about work environments? Should females feel their male bosses and peers make better decisions than them 70% of the time? If so, how can females ever be leaders in the workplace? Amy Gubser Amy Gubser, is an extraordinary 56-year-old grandmother who this year became the first person ever to complete an unassisted swim from the Golden Gate Bridge in SF to the Farallon Islands - a 30-mile stretch of cold, shark-infested waters off the California coast. Moreover, what makes this achievement even more remarkable is that Amy only started her marathon swimming journey aged 46.Throughout a fascinating conversation, Amy describes her path from early morning swims in San Francisco Bay through increasingly arduous challenges, including consequently crossing the treacherous North Channel between Ireland and Scotland. Furthermore, Amy shares her insights into the physical and mental preparation required for ultra-marathon swimming, from nutrition strategies to managing the understandable fear of great white sharks and jellyfish swarms. In addition to her swimming achievements, Amy discusses how her work as a nurse has informed her mental toughness, the importance of breaking age-related stereotypes, and as a result, her mission to inspire others - especially women - to pursue ambitious goals at any age. With upcoming swims planned for Scotland's deep and mysterious Loch Ness, therefore Amy is proof that human potential knows no bounds when matched with determination, careful preparation, and above all her simple mantra: 'I can do hard things.'Amy's story is an inspiring reminder that it's never too late to pursue extraordinary achievements. With the guards out of the way, the Heroes needed only to claim their prize. They found an exit from the arena and made their way down a tunnel. As they emerged into a hallway, they saw the fantastically dressed man making his escape with the large red jewel. He turned his head to see the Heroes and their party, and let out a loud yelp before sprinting away. They chased after him, not willing to let him escape with their hard earned prize. A few guards step into the hallway from a side passage, but were quickly dispatched. A Young Man wielding a spear and a Young Woman wearing spiked gauntlets knocked two of them aside, while the third was pummeled by one of the villagers who appeared to have developed some vampiric features in his face. They continued on, much faster the fantastically dressed man who wore a horrified look as he saw them gaining on him. As he rounded a corner, he screamed loudly as he realized he had run into a dead end. He entered a door, finding himself in a small bedroom reserved for their most lauded fighters. He saw an armoire and quickly his himself inside. He peered out through a small crack in the door, hoping the Heroes would lose track of him. He held his breath in fear as the door to the room opened. He saw the sinister look on the Jester 's face as he grinned from the doorway. To the fantastically dressed man's surprise, the Jester closed the door without entering the room and seemingly left. The fantastically dressed man let out a small sigh of relief. It was short lived - the doors to the armoire suddenly swung open as if on their own, and the the man let out a loud scream. He looked out, but saw nobody in the room with him. A small motion caught his eye, and he looked down at his feet. A small skeleton stood looking up at him. This disturbing creature had opened the doors. The fantastically dressed man kicked the skeleton away, and its bones scattered across the room. He panicked, and ran for the door. Opening it, all of the air left his lungs as he was face to face with the Jester. Before he could react, the Jester grabbed him by his throat and dragged him into the hallway. Throwing the fantastically dressed man to the ground, the Jester glanced around at the group behind him. They all watched on as the man begged for his life. He sobbed uncontrollably, finally offering up the giant red jewel. The Jester ripped it from his hands and handed it to the Female Combatant. Struck by the sudden generosity, she couldn't contain her emotions. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she repeatedly thanked the Heroes. She would be able to provide the orphanage with the lives the deserved. Looking back at the fantastically dressed man, the Swordsman Hero crouched down to meet him eye to eye. The man had soiled himself, and continued to sob as he begged them to let him go free. The Swordsman Hero turned to the Warrior Hero, asking for his input. The Warrior Hero made a motion of pointing his thumb down, which only served to cause the man to cry out further. The Swordsman Hero nodded to the Warrior Hero, then waved the Jester to the man. The Jester grabbed the man by his arm and pulled him back down the hallway toward the arena. The man screamed out, flailing around wildly in an attempt to break free. But it was no use. They made their way onto the balcony that they had observed the fantastically dressed man on earlier, presenting him to what remained of the crowd. From where they stood, they were high above where the battle had taken place. A fall from this height would do wonders at changing one's appearance. The crowd watched on nervously, unsure of what the Heroes were planning to do. The man grips the Jester's arms tightly, not wanting to fall. He begs the Jester to spare him, but only receives a terrifying grin in return. The Heroes address the audience, telling them that such treachery cannot be allowed. They gesture to the remaining spoils of victory still sitting atop the balcony. The crowd will be left to decide the fantastically dressed man's fate. Should they find themselves some treasure in the process nobody would bat an eye. The Swordsman Hero motions to the Jester, and the Heroes and their party leave the balcony with only the Jester and the fantastically dressed man behind. As the Jester's grip loosens, the man lets out a scream. He falls briefly, before suddenly coming to a halt, his shirt pulling up under his armpits and holding him in place. He looks up to see that the Jester had stabbed a knife into the railing of the balcony through his shirt. The tear was slowly increasing in size, and wouldn't hold him for long. The man desperately tries to pull himself up, but only rips his shirt further in the process. The crowd storms the balcony, and the man begs them to help him. They look over to him, and then back to the treasure. The Jester walked away before seeing their decision. A short while later, the Heroes graciously leave the Female Combatant at the orphanage and instruct her on how to sell the giant red jewel. She would need to be smart with the money, as many people would likely come looking for it. She continued to thank them repeatedly, promising that one day she would find them and go on an adventure with them. The left her behind and met up with their party at the largest tavern in the city. The tavern is alive with noise and energy, the air thick with the mingling scents of roasted meats, spilled ale, and the earthy scent of firewood crackling in the large hearth. The Heroes sit at the center of the room, their presence commanding attention despite the spectacle of individuals that surrounds them. Their armor, still bearing scratches and dents from the recent battle, gleams in the firelight. They laugh and talk animatedly with their companions. The party continued well into the night, with the Jester playing music loud enough to cause the royal guard to sheepishly arrive and ask for them to quiet down. In the morning the various villagers and companions set off to return home, all carrying a small bag of treasure taken from the arena's coffers. They would return as heroes to their villages, bringing tales of glory, though they really only served as a show of strength. The Heroes turned to the Warrior Hero. He explained to them that he had borrowed some concoction from the healer's hut. She had explained to him that he would need it, but never explained further. He had healed entirely, and his return to his friends was only slowed by the arrival of the others. The healer had sent word that the Heroes that had defeated the mighty beholder and protected multiple villages would require assistance and all that had received her word had responded. The Heroes looked at the cobbled streets of the city, having forgotten entirely their reason for venturing there in the first place. They smiled at one another, walking toward the city gate. As they crossed its threshold, they prepared themselves for whatever adventure awaited them. Their excitement for the unknown filled their faces with joy, apparently drowning out the sound of the messenger from the royal family that had chased after them desperately since their arrival in the city. Daisy Ridley shot to global fame for her portrayal of Rey in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy. Since then, she has been choosing diverse roles that showcase her talents in films with wide ranging budgets that prove her north star is the quality of the work and nothing else. She has three films that have come out in this year alone—“Sometimes I think About Dying,” “Young Woman and The Sea”, and her latest, “Magpie.” On this episode, she explains how coming up with the idea for “Magpie” and building her character from the ground up was an interesting exercise in multiple ways. She makes a compelling case for why not all actors can be objective enough to give notes on a film, talks about the ways her process changes when she has to do an accent, ponders the healthy amount of worry and uncertainty that surround her return to the character of Rey, and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram
Season 5 of The Film Scorer Podcast is here! In the Season 5 premiere I chat with composer Amelia Warner. Amelia's latest score is for the Disney sports biopic Young Woman and the Sea (starring Daisy Ridley), about Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel. As such, we spend much of our conversation focused on that score, including how her score and approaches developed over time, balancing the film's sports and family aspects, working closely with legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and plenty more. Along the way, we also talk about things like Mary Shelley and the pros and cons of temp music. Amelia's score, and much of her other music, is available on all major platforms, and Young Woman and the Sea is currently available on Disney+. You can find out more about Amelia on her website.
