My guest today is Bari J Ackerman, artist, maximalist, floral enthusiast, and now, author.  Her first book, Bloom Wild, A Free Spirited Guide To Decorating with Floral Patterns showcases Bari's own work on walls, fabric and furniture while teaching us how to mix patterns, even crazy, wild patterns, in ways that are joyous rather than chaotic.  We talk about pattern mixing a lot on this episode but I also want to mention that in the book, she also shares quite a few DIY projects as well as historical and botanical notes about flowers that make the book all the more engaging.  Here's Bari.

We welcome Bari J. Himes, founder of In Loving Memory 19, a COVID loss survivor group she started on Facebook. She started the group after the death of her mother, Rose. She has worked to build a community for COVID loss survivors, so no one has to grieve alone. Bari is also a highly respected educator and brings that experience to her care for others. We talk about loss during the pandemic and how ritual means so much to those who are grieving. Right after we recorded this interview, Bari's family experienced another tragedy, a fire in their home, destroying the part of their home where her mother Rose's belongings were being stored. Have you ever thought about licensing your artwork? Well, today I'm talking with Bari J all about how she got started as a surface pattern designer and how she put herself out there to get her first fabric company to license. We chat about how to educate yourself about pattern design, her favorite products she's created, and all about her new book. We also dive into her process and how she finds inspiration for her collections.   About Bari J:Bari J. is a lifestyle brand that spans many categories including wall art, fabric, home decor, stationery, cards, wall murals, wall paper, stencils and more.   I'm an artist. As a very visual person, I probably always was, but I didn't always create art. I was a fashionista sort in high school, and I was crazy for interior design. But I was busy singing and dancing and being an actress. I never ever thought I could make art. My mom was the artist. I was the actress. That was that. I came to art in my early thirties as a way to express myself when my children were young. Out of college, I had worked in advertising. And though I started college as a theatre major I graduated college with a degree in Social Sciences and Women's Studies. Not really related to art, I'd say. But when our now almost grown girls were little, I was always puttering around. I wanted our home to be different. I didn't want it to look like a page from a Pottery Barn catalog. I wanted it to look like us. And I also didn't want to dress from a catalog. At the time, I started making jewelry from found objects and then collage art as well. Soon I was sewing handbags and created a small business under the name Bari J. selling luscious fabric bags... and the Curated Maximalist Style was born (though I didn't know that quite yet). After several years, I decided I needed my own fabric for the bags, and with a background in graphic design for advertising, I started teaching myself to design fabric. A year later, I licensed my first line of fabric. It was a "painterly" line called Full Bloom that most assumed I had painted by hand. But I hadn't. For years I continued to create art just in the computer... and then I took the leap. Paint. And I was hooked. Now years later I know what was always true. I am an artist. And I am a painter. Since then I have created 15 collections of fabric, art for wall paper, home decor, wall art, and much more. The Curated Maximalist Style has become part of who I am and what I do.   Links: Episode 45 - Angie Avard Turner, Lawyer of Prepd for Success on Protecting Your Intellectual Property, Contracts for Creatives, & Copyrighting Images   Website: https://barijdesigns.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/barij/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/barij/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BariJdesigns/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9pNVddXV5GWCkXHl5ZvbhQ   To get 50% off your first year with Honeybook, go to positivelycreative.net/honeybook!   About The Positively Creative Podcast: The Positively Creative Podcast was created by Dorothy Collier, artist of Dorothy Art, for creative entrepreneurs. Welcome to Episode 46 of Sit & Sew Radio, a Quilt Addicts Anonymous podcast. I am very excited because today’s guest is Bari J. Ackerman, a painter, textile designer and home décor designer. I’ve admired Bari J.’s work for a long time. Her Instagram feed brings me joy every time she shares an image. I just love her curated maximalist style where more is more. Someday when I have time and budget, I would love to get just an ounce of her style into my home. Before we get to the interview I would love to tell you a little bit about what is going on behind the scenes over at Quilt Addicts Anonymous. I am recording this in the one day I have off between vending at the International Quilt Expo Chicago and AQS QuiltWeek Paducah. It has been a crazy week and it is about to get crazier. Make sure you come visit us at Booth #2106 and mention you heard this podcast to get a FREE pattern with any $10 purchase. We also have buy three, get the fourth free on all Quilt Addicts Anonymous patterns. And we are bringing yardage from the new Kaffe Spring 2018 fabric lines and Tula Pink All Stars. We also have some new goodies at the shop including Alison Glass Mariner’s Cloth knit fabrics and Tango from QT Fabrics and Ink & Arrow.   Bari J. Ackerman, painter, textile designer and home décor designer And now onto the interview. Bari J. got the design bug when her children were small and she wanted to decorate her home in something other than items from the Pottery Barn that would also be in everyone else’s home. Before long her creative endeavors led to designing her own handbags, which led to a business and before long designing her own fabric for the bags and then her first fabric line. Now she has created 16 collections of fabric, art for wall paper, home décor and wall art. Check out Bari J.'s art and collections at her website barijdesigns.com.

Bari Ackerman, better known as Bari J, the highly successful textile designer and artist, is pure joy to chat with.  Her designs have been made into everything from rugs to stationery to wallpaper and pillows.  And we were really interested in how someone forges that kind of career and we were completely enthralled with what she had to say.  If you have any shred of self doubt about what you're pursuing, Bari's story will pull you out of the muck and into a place of purpose and determination!  Which is why we wanted to share this interview right at the beginning of the year when we can all use a shot of optimism!

This week's chat is with Bari J. Ackerman, of Bari J. Designs. Bari designs art for products, and during our conversation she tells us exactly what that entails. As you're about to hear, Bari is the ultimate self-starter and self motivator, and her can-do attitude is infectious! In this episode, she talks about how she went from making handbags to sell at local boutiques, to selling on Etsy, where she found the market to be a bit saturated, and how the need to differentiate herself on there led her to design her own fabric. She shares how she took the leap from designing on the computer to painting, and we discuss the role social media, specifically Instagram, plays in her business and sales. Bari was kind enough to squeeze me into her busy schedule on a recent trip to Los Angeles from her home in Scottsdale, Arizona, and I can't tell you how excited I was to talk with her. And I'm even more excited for you to hear what Bari had to say. Hop on over to herprocess.com for show notes, fun extras, and blog posts! And, find Her Process on facebook.com/herprocess.
