Flora, Fauna and Foodways with Archivist Nancy Webster Researching the early 20th century images of local flora and fauna by Jesse Lowe Smith and E. E. Parratt led to further investigation. Twenty-first century publications including Andreas Viestad's Dinner in Rome a History of the world in one Meal and Arbres et arbustes sauvages des trottoirs toulousains (Wild trees and plants and shrubs of the sidewalks of Toulouse) by Boris Presseq inspired further research of these plants as food sources for humans. We will share selected early 20th century, local images and documentation of these plants' in early recipes. Nancy Webster began working with historical collections in Highland Park, Illinois in 2010 when she launched the community archives program with a grant from the National Archives' National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). Since beginning the community archives program in collaboration with the NHPRC, she has written and managed $50,000.00 in local and Illinois state grants for digitization and other history and culture projects. She teaches at Dominican University as an adjunct instructor, currently teaching the Advanced Archives seminar. Previously, she worked at the Bentley Library, the Chicago History Museum and Molex Connector Corporation. She received her MILS and BA from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Prior to her 30 year career as an archivist Webster worked as a translator, political science researcher, au pair, waitperson, and bartender. Her years working in restaurants provided a base for this project. Recorded via Zoom on June 29, 2023
Billie Marten is a songwriter based in London. On her last record, Flora Fauna, Billie began to examine herself through her writing (We actually spoke about Flora Fauna back on Episode 24 of the podcast). Nearly two years later, she is out with another self-examining record: Drop Cherries. It's a tender, multifaceted observation of long-term love, vulnerability, and finding joy in the mundane. Today's interview is a must listen. Julie Mathers created Flora & Fauna, an online retail store selling all natural products, back in 2014 and along with her husband and team, grew it into a $15 million B-Corp certified business and a household name before selling it in 2021. Julie very generously shares not only her personal drivers of what it takes to even dream up something this big, but she also shares some of the key factors that drove the success of this remarkable business. “I was prepared to be different and to take a risk” Julie Mathers What I love about this interview is the experience that Julie shares about what it really means to have a business with purpose and how to implement and communicate your key values in everything your brand does. And how this can be your brand's biggest asset. Listen now for inspiration from Julie Mathers to align your values with your business and create a powerful and purposeful brand. Ali shares about how her responsibility as the head mistress of Flora and Fauna for her HOA led her to an amazing wolf sanctuary called Shadowland Foundation (shadowlandfoundation.org). We discuss the harm of black and white thinking particularly when it comes to the challenges of supporting the unhoused and Betsy gets shaded in real time from some fellow rescuers about helping a litter of Silver Labs. Tune in for that and so much more on this week's Dear Dog.
Mmm the soothing sounds of Flora & Fauna ranting. We go to the archives and answer a listener question from....last year. What are our opinions on interactive exhibits at zoos? Are they worth it? Are they manageable? Are they the single worst idea anyone has ever had in the entire universe? What do you think?
Just when you thought kitten season was over it comes back with a vengeance, Maria from the Mid West Cat Shelter gives us latest. Heather from Chapman River Friends gives some advice on those heading outdoors and what tells us what's coming up for 2022. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It doesn't fly and it's not a lemur, we are off to a great start. Tune in to hear about a little critter that yeets itself off limbs to forage for tasty leaves. We answer questions like: Where are flying lemurs found? What actually is a flying lemur? Where are Flora & Fauna's umbilical cords? What if steering wheels were made of skin? Are flying lemurs endangered?

Welcome to Roadcase, a podcast exploring the live music experience!! Billie Marten, who joins Roadcase from East London for this fun interview, just released her 3rd album, Flora Fauna, on May 21, only a few days shy of her 22nd birthday. It's a gorgeous, free-flowing album full of wonderful guitar rhythms and sonic surprises. Billie is actually a seasoned road veteran whose first real gig was at 12 years old when she played with a guitar she borrowed from her uncle. Since then, she's played tons more gigs, and many of the super early ones with her Dad as her roadie and de facto manager. For Billie, it's been a true family affair and she credits her parents and others for giving her the unconditional support she has enjoyed and benefited from thus far in her young life as a performer. Come join us for this fun and informative chat with Billie along with a few surprises. It's a great ride so hop on board!!For more information: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comTheme music: "Eugene" (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Today's episode is humming with knowledge, living nutrients, ecology and joy. We welcome interdisciplinary healer and ally of the natural world, Molly Helfend. Originally from the Santa Monica Mountains, she now calls the cliffs of New Zealand home but makes Nature itself her official residence. Her commitment to mother earth began at a young age: protesting the Keystone XL pipeline and interning with Greenpeace and working with Rainforest Action Network to develop campaigns against palm oil plantations in the Sumatran Rainforest. Later, Molly's environmental work and activism took a serendipitous turn into ethnobotany, herbalism, and education. Molly now works across the globe as an ethnobotanist, herbalist, natural health practitioner, creative, content director, visual artist, educator, world traveler and writer. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies and Holistic Health from the University of Vermont, Masters of Science in Ethnobotany from the University of Kent, and researched her Masters thesis in New Zealand studying the correlation between the Maori concept Kaitiakitanga translated as “guardianship of nature and plant life”. She has endeavored to embody that philosophy in her work as a herbalist and naturopath, as well as in her personal life, while maintaining a commitment to indigenous cultural competency and responsibility. In our conversation, Molly graciously opens up to us about intimate, life changing experiences such as fighting a parasite she developed from the Cook Islands and experiencing copper poisoning from an IUD that led her on a healing journey working with natural remedies. These experiences have inspired her to educate others on all the powers of plants, herbs, and holistic medicine. She shares her insights with us in an open, transparent and informative dialogue that reminds us of our innate interconnectedness with Earth and the healing potential within the ecological lens. Wildlife strikes are on the rise, with birds accounting for about 97 percent of reported strikes. Factors like an increase in passenger traffic, the introduction of much quieter engines on newer planes, and a large increase in wildlife populations have all led to a rise in the probability of wildlife strikes both at airports and in the air.In this episode, we'll hear from three professionals about the work that they do to help prevent these strikes and keep birds and those aboard aircraft safe.Read the show notes on our blog.

In this episode, I interview Julie Mathers, the ethical Founder, and CEO of BCorp Certified Flora & Fauna, the world’s largest self-funded vegan and cruelty-free product website. She launched the business in late 2014, aged 38. Flora & Fauna has done more than 8,000 SKUs and they have a warehouse and small retail shop located in inland Sydney. Julie is very driven when it comes to our planet, animals, and making a difference. Describing their business as a platform for purpose to do good, one of their initiatives has saved more than 30 tonnes of plastic after their move to minimal packaging. Adding a personal touch by handwriting each order, they have now done it more than half a million times. The business grew from $60,000 in sales in their first year to now $20 Million per annum, growing almost 700% in the last three years, and more recently, 30% per annum. They mainly sell in Australia but a little to New Zealand, the UK, and the US. Julie and her husband started as the two full-time employees and they now have over 40 full-time employees. They got their funding from their initial savings and have sustained their growth from profits. Julie is very passionate about disability employment. She felt she had succeeded when she realized they were making a difference and when they employed the first people, bought a warehouse, and won the national Telstra business awards. Flora & Fauna was awarded the Top Sustainable Retailer in 2020, Best Small Retailer and Best Online Retailer 2018, and was shortlisted as a finalist for Responsible Retailer of the Year at the World Retail Awards 2017. Julie highlights that the hardest thing about growing a small business is keeping going and says that the one thing she would tell herself on day one of starting out in business is, Don’t give up, and stress less” If you’re an existing or aspiring small business owner, get ready to be inspired! This Cast Covers: The global impact phenomenon that is Flora and Fauna. From a small entity in November 2014 to the huge platform for purpose that they are now. Using their reach, engagement, and profits to make a difference. The measurable results of how they save the environment with minimal packaging. Starting out as a bakery worker at age 16 and how her immense love for retail-led her to where she is today. Growing 699% over the last three years and sustaining a 30% growth over the last very challenging year. Shipping all their products from Australia to the US, UK, and New Zealand by focusing more on the speed of shipping. Expected turnover of over $20 Million in 2020, 6 years after their first year turnover of $60,000. Their immense growth in terms of team members brought about by a continuous increase in the number of orders. How the shed outside their house inspired her to start the business. The surprise and emotion of winning in the national Telstra awards. Seeing success in all the little moments of achievement in one's small business. Her passion for disability employment and making a difference through her business. The importance of working out what you want to achieve with marketing before you invest in a marketing channel. Owning 100% of the business from starting with her own money and growing it solely from cash flow. The challenges in the skincare industry and the advice she has for anyone who wants to get into it. Successfully managing their cash to achieve their business goals despite the stresses they had to overcome. Growing the business by running her own race and focusing primarily on her plans. The experience of moving from corporate to a small business. The importance of a small business owner being relentless. Lessons from their previous hiring blunders that enabled them to win at building a team that fits into their culture. Learning to let go as an owner and founder to give team members the opportunity to do what they’re best at. Working tirelessly hard to build Flora and Fauna, and focusing more on the flexibility that the business affords her rather than on the idea of work-life balance. The difficulties she experiences when she tries to shut her mind off when she’s not working. Investing in a lot of professional development and the impact it’s had on her as a small business owner. The benefits of having a great network you can pull on rather than having a specific mentor. We answer listener submitted questions. How do Flora & Fauna like being zookeepers? Is it a good job? More importantly, would you rather be stung by an irukandji on your foot or have a falcon stoop into the back of your head?
Let’s talk Cheetahs. Cheetahs can see through all space time - past and present, this is confirmed. They are slendermen and they hold a special place in Flora & Fauna’s heart. We answer questions like: Are cheetahs big cats? What’s the difference between leopard and cheetah print? Would a cheetah dress as a honey badger for Halloween? Would a cheetah win in a fight? Can a cheetah purr or roar? Are cheetah dumber than a box of rocks?
