A few weeks ago, our staff travelled to Houston, Texas, for Quilt Market. Quilt Market is a show for people in the industry to gather, talk about the state of the industry, make connections, and find ways for us all to work together. We use the event specifically to find new products and fabrics to feature, and find new designers to work with. We also use this event to look at trends in the industry. From neon fabrics to gnome motifs to eco-friendly products, we're sharing all the trends we saw and what to expect to hit stores next year. We also share 5 reasons to decorate for the holidays early, tips for planning your handmade gifts, and quilting products we're loving right now. Today we have a special episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast recorded at Fall Quilt Market in Houston, Texas. International Quilt Market is a trade show for the fabric and quilt industry. It takes place twice a year, in October and May, and is a time when quilt shop owners from all over the country and all over the world come together to see the forthcoming fabric collections from all of the manufacturers, try out the latest sewing machines, embroidery machines, and long arm machines from all the big machine brands, and discover new notions, buttons, trims, storage solutions, and other neat things they might want to carry in their shops in the coming year. I attended Fall Quilt Market and recorded interviews with shop owners about how 2019 was for them, what's selling particularly well, and what challenges they're facing coming into 2020. Some of the shop owners I talked to have been in business for three decades, and some for just a few years. Some are full-service quilt shops with a dozen employees, some are very small shops, and some are online only. I enjoyed hearing the diversity of their experiences and I think you'll get a snapshot of the industry by listening to what they have to say. +++++ This episode is sponsored by Marcus Fabrics and Studio 37 Fabrics. On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we’re talking about quilting and activism with my guests Sara Trail and Juan Tapia. We recorded this episode in person at the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts where there is an exhibit up through December 1, 2019 of the Social Justice Sewing Academy Quilts called Piecing Together Youth Voices in a 21st Century Sewing Circle. Sara Trail is the founder and executive director of the Social Justice Sewing Academy. Sara learned to sew when she was a toddler and had a sewing career as a teenager when she wrote Sew with Sara, a book that teaches teens and tweens how to sew clothes and accessories. She also starred in nationally published DVDs called Cool Stuff to Sew with Sara, designed two fabric collections with Fabri-Quilt and a pattern collection with Simplicity. While attending UC Berkeley, Sara created a quilt in memory of Trayvon Martin and her love for sewing and passion for social justice intertwined. After graduating from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, she founded the Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) to be a platform where youth create art that engages and educates communities. Juan Tapia is one of the students who has been a participant in the Social Justice Sewing Academy. Juan just graduated from high school and is now working for a non-profit called Courage, Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice, that works with formerly incarcerated. This is my second annual State of the Quilting Industry show recorded at Fall Quilt Market in Houston, Texas. The show is only open to the trade and it’s a time for quilt shop owners, pattern designers, notion makers, and fabric manufacturers to come together and do business with one another. In this episode, I sit down with quilt shop owners to talk about how business is going. I did man-on-the-street style interviews with shop owners I’d never met before, walking up to them while they were in line for Sample Spree or sitting down with them at the round tables outside of the Schoolhouse classrooms. Some of them knew me, but most of them didn’t. Quilt shop owners are on the front lines, serving customers every day. They are out there buying and selling the fabric and patterns and books, selling the classes and booking the teachers. They know a tremendous amount about the industry and I’m really excited to bring their voices and perspective to the show. +++++ This episode is sponsored by Crosscut Sewing. Welcome to Episode 48 of Sit & Sew Radio, a Quilt Addicts Anonymous podcast. This week our guest is pattern and fabric designer Jessica VanDenburgh of Sew Many Creations. I've known Jessica for a few years from meeting her at various quilting industry events, and I spoke with her at Quilt Market in Portland about her brand-new fabric line, Gypsy, for Windham Fabrics, which is due out in shops in October, including ours at shop.quiltaddictsanonymous.com. Before we get to the interview, I wanted to let you all know what's been going on at Quilt Addicts Anonymous. We've been pumping out tons of great content in 2018, and the latest is our Hillside and Jelly Roll Rug video tutorials which have been big hits with the quilting community so far on YouTube. And if you missed it, be sure to check out my Free Online Beginner Quilting course which is great for first-timers as well as quilting veterans looking for a refresher course. We've also been added a fun new Crafting With Kids video series in which myself and my cute little Future Quilter have fun with crafts in hopes of inspiring you and your little ones to get crafty! Check out all of our content at quiltaddictsanonymous.com and click on the tutorials tab. Also, be sure to subscribe to us on YouTube by clicking here. Now on to the interview ... Jessica VanDenburgh, pattern and fabric designer I just love Jessica's work and have been wanting her as a guest on the podcast for awhile now, so I am super excited to get to share a bit of her story and passion with all of you. Jessica has created many wonderful patterns through her Sew Many Creations brand, for quilts and bags. The idea of her own fabric line was always in the back of her mind, "but I didn’t think that it would ever actually happen because I don’t consider myself super artistic. I don’t think that I draw that well and I don’t have those computer skills either." Nonetheless, she spoke with Windham about doing her own line and started sketching and coming up with concepts. “It was an exciting process," Jessica said. "I got to pick all of the colors and make it what I wanted but they polished it up and made it even better than I could have imagined.” A lot of fabric designers are not sewers, and they don't always understand how their art translates into cutting it up and using it in projects. That's what I love about Jessica's line. As a sewer and pattern designer, she really thought about her her line would be used when creating it and the end product is just beautiful. I just loved how her booth looked at quilt market, and her fabric looked great on large and small-scale projects. In addition to her new fabric line, Jessica discusses her obsession with Cork fabric and more in our interview. Check out Jessica's website at sewmanycreationsny.com.
In this episode of the quilting podcast, I open with some talk of the giant list of things to do before Quilt Market, much of which does not include quilting, but does include other things like woodworking, graphic design, and writing. Welcome to Episode 47 of Sit & Sew Radio, a Quilt Addicts Anonymous podcast! We're so excited to be back with another episode after a break. We're back with an interview with Frank Bennett, the CEO of the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky. We spoke with Frank while we were in Paducah for AQS QuiltWeek in April, and things have been a bit crazy over here at Quilt Addicts Anonymous ever since. As soon as I returned I had to hustle to finish multiple projects for Quilt Market in Portland. Check out my vlog that I did by clicking here to see all that went into getting ready for quilt market and the different projects I created. Also during that time we were working on shooting photos for my first book, Simple Quilts for the Modern Home, which is available for preorder. After that, we zeroed in on the launch of our FREE Beginner Quilting series sponsored by QT Fabrics. The series consists of 12 videos and teaches you everything you need to know about quilting from beginning to end. It has been great to see some of the responses to the videos and how it has been helpful for beginner and veteran quilters alike. Check out the videos at quiltaddictsanonymous.com/learntoquilt and download the FREE pattern to get a 20% off coupon for the supplies you'll need to get started! Listen to the episode to hear more about what we've been up to and what's coming next at Quilt Addicts Anonymous. Frank Bennett, CEO of the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Ky. Frank and I chat about some of the exciting things going on in Paducah during show week as well as some of the exhibits at the museum. On today’s episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast we're talking about building a fabric company with my guest, Arvin Pairavi. Arvin is the President and Co-Owner of Shannon Fabrics, a family owned importer and distributor of plush fabrics. Arvin joined the company in 2000 to work with his father and has helped grow Shannon Fabrics from a small business to a team of more than 50 employees. In this interview we trace the Pairavi family's history in the fabric business. Arvin's grandfather and father had fabric stores in Iran before the family fled to the United States as refugees in the late 1980s. Once settled in Los Angeles, his father went into the fabric business again, opening a retail and wholesale fabric shop focusing on garment fabrics. When the family hit hard times due to the stock market crash in late 1999, Arvin left his job in the electronics business to help his father. They began importing fabrics, expanding their wholesale business significantly. On a buying trip Arvin discovered a new, exceptionally soft polyester fabric that was different from anything currently on the market at that time. He placed a small order for what Shannon Fabrics called Cuddle fabric and was thrilled when this new substrate became an immediate success. Today, it's one of Shannon's premier products and is available in nearly 100 colors. A few years later Shannon Fabrics entered the quilting industry, attending Quilt Market for the first time. Later, a licensing partnership with Robert Kaufman led to more popularity among local quilt shops. +++++ This episode is sponsored by Okan Arts. On today’s episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast we're talking about the sewing and quilting industry with my guest, Pokey Bolton. Pokey Bolton was introduced to art quilting and the related needle arts in 1998, and ever since she took her first stitch (a fly) and embroidered her first motif (a spider), she has been entangled in this industry and doesn’t envision herself getting free. Art quilting and mixed-media have, quite literally, taken over her life—so much so that she left her doctoral program and full-time teaching job to found Quilting Arts Magazine® and later with John Bolton, Cloth Paper Scissors® magazine, as well as a line of books. After they sold their publishing business to Interweave, Pokey became the Editorial Director for the Quilt & Paper Division at Interweave and was founding host of Quilting Arts TV on PBS. In January 2012 she joined Quilts, Inc, the parent company of International Quilt Festival and Quilt Market, in the newly founded position of Chief Creative Officer. A little over two years later, she founded Crafting a Life, LLC, a media and events company based in Napa Valley, California offering media and boutique-style retreats. In January 2016, she launched CRAFT NAPA, an annual retreat held in downtown Napa. CRAFT NAPA includes crafting, sewing, collage, quilting workshops, wine education, wine excursions, and an Artists' Market. Today's podcast guest is Melody Miller. Living in Atlanta, GA, Melody is the Creative Director and Founding Designer of Cotton and Steel, author of Ruby Star Wrapping, wife and mother. Since the debut of Cotton and Steel at the Spring 2014 Quilt Market, Melody has been at the forefront of a powerful commitment to the modern aesthetic. I wanted to hear how she created Cotton and Steel, her thoughts on fabric design and her personal and professional vision. While we talk about those questions and more are discussed in the podcast, I also came away with confirmation of the power of collaboration, the importance of pursuing your dreams and how friends can push you to be your vest best. I am grateful to the Modern Quilt Guild for providing a place to podcast at Quilt Con. It gave Melody and I an opportunity to record in person and Quilt con participants a behind the scenes glimpse at the recording process. I hope you enjoy our conversation. In this episode of Hello My Quilting Friends I'm chatting with Kate Colleran from SeamsLineaDream.com about writing quilt patterns and the risks and benefits of offering free quilt patterns to drive traffic to your website or quilting business. Kate is a quilting author, teacher, and quilt designer from Colorado. We also chat about the workload professional quilters carry and ways she generated sales at Quilt Market.
Hello, my quilting friends! Leah Day here with episode 7 of the podcast, and today I'm going to share an interview with Mary Fons. She is the daughter of Marianne Fons, who started Fons and Porter. She's just such a amazing all-around person, and we really hit it off at Quilt Market. Then I was like, "You know, you want to be on the podcast? That way I can get to know you a little bit better." This podcast really runs the gamut on conversations and stuff and topics, but I would say I guess the overall theme is just love of quilting, love of making quilts, and Mary helps debunk a few of the myths of quilting so that's really cool too. You can check out Mary's website at MaryFons.com.
Today's guest is Natalie Barnes of Beyond the Reef Patterns. Living in southern California, Natalie is a quilter, author of A Modern Twist, teacher, dog mom, pattern and fabric designer. During our conversation, we start out by talking about her creative journey as an interior designer and how she started Beyond the Reef after a relaxing morning in Hawaii. Exploring her organic design process, we also talk about how she records her inspiration and how her book came into fruition. Known for her inclusiveness in the industry, she talks about the decision to work with "her nine" to produce pieces for her Windham Fabrics Handmaker Quilt Market booth along with why going to Quilt Market is important to her and the industry. She discusses what she included in her Quilty Box along with gives suggestions for those considering a career in design. I hope you enjoy the episode. I’m super excited to share a recording from 2016 quilt market with you today. I teamed up with Christa Watson from Christaquilts.com and Stephanie Palmer from QuiltingPlanner.com to talk about writing and publishing books for quilters. Now I’ve known Christa for a few years and we met online first and collaborated a bit. I remember Christa emailing me for help on a few magazine articles she was writing, then we met in person at a spring quilt market a few years ago and really hit it off. And Christa has launched her quilting business into the big time in the last few years. She’s written two books, and is working on her third, she sells precuts in The Precut Store on Amazon, and I believe she has a Craftsy class in the works as well so definitely lots of stuff going on for Christa. Christa actually introduced me to Stephanie Palmer just before quilt market and again, this was just such a serendipitous moment where we could have done the schoolhouse presentation with just the two of us, but adding Stephanie was just perfect because she added a totally different perspective of publishing to the mix. She has created The Quilting Planner which is in i’s second year and she gave me a copy and I honestly don’t think I’ll ever be able to live without them from now on! It’s far more than just a date book – it has graph paper and space to plan quilts and it includes some quilting projects too so I think all quilters should have. So this was a live interview at fall Quilt Market 2016 which is basically an industry trade show. This is where manufacturers and business owners meet with quilt shop owners, designers show off their new lines of fabric, and where a lot of networking and learning goes on every year. My inspiration for creating this schoolhouse presentation was to share my love of writing and self publishing with more quilters. There are a lot of choices and a lot of ways to publish your books these days and I hope it will inspire you to think outside the box with your quilting books.

Mickey explains how Windham chooses new designers and exactly what he's looking for. He takes us through the fabric manufacturing process from start to finish. The following year the scholarship recipient has an exhibit of her work and her students work. We'll take a look at Tricia's exhibit at the 2008 International Quilt Festival.
It's a thrill for me to present two interviews that we did at the last Quilt Market in Houston. First up is amazing pattern designer Chelsea Anderson of Pink Fig Patterns, and second is fabric & pattern designer Lila Tueller of Lila Tueller Designs. Enjoy our video interviews featuring the vast talent of these two amazing ladies, as they mention some of their hot items for Spring 09. If you are attending Quilt Market in Pittsburgh next month, be sure to pop by and tell them you saw their interviews on Boutique Cafe!
If you've never attended a Quilt Market you're in for a visual treat! Here's a brief glimpse of what it looks like inside the doors. Thank you to all of the designers and sellers who participated and allowed us to capture their booths. Enjoy!! ** To VIEW our Video Footage - click the “watch the show” button” or subscribe to us in iTunes! Thanks everyone.
Episode 91: Reflections of Houston
Boutique Cafe made some history today at Quilt Market, as we are the first media outlet to offer a live feed directly from Market! What a thrilling (and scary) experience to attempt such a technical feat on my own. We taped within the press room and invited special guests Patty Young, Paula Prass and Elizabeth Cranmer to join me. Our feed went live at 11:30 am on Ustream.tv, we thank many of you viewers for popping by to support our live show with your questions and comments. You're the best! We loved the Live Feed option so much that we're going to do another one tomorrow morning (Sunday) as well. Tune in LIVE to www.ustream.tv/channel/boutique-cafe-live between 11:00am (texas time) with Myrinda of Fabric Hound and Designer Melissa Averinos.(**if you sign up for a free account on ustream, you'll be able to post questions directly to our guests). **GIVEAWAY: Lizzy Anne is teaming up with Boutique Cafe to offer her very popular Spring UP!
