"CLARENCE CARTER SLIPS AWAY ON THE MYSTERY TRAIN"When we speak of the deep soul drenched days when certain performers inhabited a heart full of soul so captivating and special that they were ordained as high priests of mournful and lustful magic, we will always recall Soul legend Clarence Carter.Clarence boarded The Mystery Train today, May 14, following struggles with prostate cancer and a battle with pneumonia and sepsis. He was 90.This blind Southern star from Alabama scored two Top 10 hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s with “Slip Away” and “Patches,” After having hits on the R&B charts (including 1965's “Step By Step” and 1967's “Tell Daddy”), Carter landed on the pop charts – as well as, concurrently, the R&B lists – with 1968's “Slip Away,” a song that highlighted Carter's powerful and emotional baritone voice with a lyric in which the singer implores his married lover for a secret rendezvous Two years later Carter released his biggest pop hit, the Grammy-winning (for Best R&B song) “Patches,” which rose to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Mr. Carter also recorded a number of raunchy novelty songs eschewed by mainstream radio but finding success in later years: The 1968 “Back Door Santa” was sampled by Run-D.M.C. for the 1987 single “Christmas in Hollis,” and the even more explicit “Strokin'” from 1986 was featured on the soundtrack for Eddie Murphy's 1996 remake of The Nutty Professor as well as in William Friedkin's 2011 film Killer Joe.Sleep Well Clarence. The first of the six covers that appear on Please Please Me is a mid-tempo ballad called “Anna (Go to Him),” which was written and first recorded by Arthur Alexander. Chances are that most people who hear the version sung by John Lennon have no idea who Arthur Alexander is—but the Beatles certainly knew, and so did the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan: Alexander is reportedly the only songwriter whose tunes have appeared on studio albums by those three hallowed acts. Elvis Presley recorded one of his songs as well—albeit one that Alexander co-wrote—and so did Otis Redding and Tina Turner and Jerry Lee Lewis and Percy Sledge.Don Covay recorded for several labels, including Blaze, Sue, Big Top, Fire, Arnold, Fleetwood, Columbia, Epic and Scepter, releasing 'Popeye Waddle' b/w 'One Little Boy Had Money' in 1962 for Cameo Parkway, which became a hit.Don was, by now, recording solo material, and material under the name of Don Covay and the Goodtimers. He penned the U.S. number 1 single 'Pony Time' for Chubby Checker, wrote a hit song called 'I'm Hanging Up My Heart for You', for the Soul singer Solomon Burke, and wrote for Gladys Knight & The Pips, penning 'Letter Full of Tears', which made the top 20.Don formed partnerships with several associates including Horace Ott and Ronnie Miller. In 1964, when he signed to the Rosemart label. His debut single there with the Goodtimers, 'Mercy Mercy' featured Jimi Hendrix on guitar. The following year, Jimi Hendrix played again on the follow up single 'Take This Hurt Off Me' b/w 'Please Don't Let Me Know'.Clarence Carter didn't have it easy while growing up in Alabama; and being Black and blind was an extra burden, but he has overcome many other obstacles in so many ways. “I feel incredibly good about what I've been able to accomplish, but it was not easy. Our world presents challenges and barriers to success for people with disabilities, but I always wanted more in life and believe that the ADA helped me get to where I am today.”I would like to say that Carter now has three “B's” behind his name, Black, Blind and Blessed. Carter is known for serious Blues music, which includes a string of R&B hits. The songs “Back Door Santa,” “Slip Away,” “Patches,” “Too Weak to Fight” and the dance hall hit “Strokin” are part of his Blues legacy.

Today's episode is a re-release of my conversation with Jenneh Rishe, shared in loving memory of her life.In sad news, Jenneh passed away recently, and I've chosen to bring this conversation back because it so deeply reflects who she was - her clarity, her compassion, her honesty, and the way she showed up for others even while navigating her own health journey.Listening back now, her voice carries even more meaning. This episode is not just a conversation, it's a reflection of her presence, her advocacy, and the impact she made in the lives of so many. She carried with her fierce hope and faith, and was always looking for the silver lining. It is an honor to get to share her voice again here, and to keep her story and her work alive. Ernie was a loving family man, a father, a grandfather. Dapperly dressed, he was a veteran, a golfer, karaoke man, a bowler and so much more. Throughout the years, Tessa would visit her grandfather in Arizona, and often times recorded their conversations. Always taking the opportunity to ask him questions about his life, and he shared many moments including his time as a medic during the Second World War.In this episode you will hear some of those conversations, between grandfather and granddaughter. Res in peace grandpa. When he passed away he was just a few weeks shy of turning 102.CREDITS & LINKS CITY SHOUT OUTS:

On April 2nd, 2026, the world lost Bo, and I lost my best friend. I will have much more to say over time... But this episode was something that, upon time of recording (January, 2026), we decided was too intimate to post. We reviewed the initial cut (thank you Steven), and feared that once something so personal was out there, we couldn't ever take it back. We decided to store it and save it for off chance that we might some day feel comfortable posting it. That day sadly came much sooner than either of us ever expected... This conversation, that I am now so thankful for, is a thorough look into our lives before & during the show. We came up with something like 100-150 questions before narrowing it down to this intimate conversation wherein we interviewed each other for the first, and last time. The goal was not only to get to know each other in ways we didn't, but share something new and unique with you all. Now, all things considered, it is an absolute miracle. I expected going back through this to be painful and impossible, and it turned out to be some of the only comfort I've found since his passing. Suddenly he was here, back in the room with me, as he now is with all of you. I am writing this in haste basically on the way to his memorial, so I will let him speak for himself here now. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 7 minutesSynopsis: Last night (2/1/26), I was honored to give a shiur at Congregation Eitz Chayim of Dogwood Park (West Hempstead, NY) in memory of my dear student Adira a"h, on the occasion of her third yahrzeit. As I mention in the disclaimers toward the beginning, a friend of mine was worried that it might come across as "a wackadoodle shiur," on account of its eclectically ambitious scope and agenda. I didn't care. My goal was to give over the type of Torah that represented Adira, and that she would have enjoyed. The shiur might alternatively be titled “The Slytherin Path to Torah,” and is my attempt to demonstrate that such a path exists. If that doesn't mean anything to you - or if, as Adira's mom joked, you're prone to mistaking “Salazar Slytherin” for the name of a Chasidish rebbe you're not familiar with - don't worry. I provide the necessary background information at the beginning of the shiur. One more disclaimer I feel obligated to repeat. In the shiur, I draw upon my personal takeaways from Lawrence Kaplan's introduction to Maimonides: Between Philosophy and Halakhah, based on notes taken by Rabbi Gerald Homnick on the lectures given by the Rav (Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik zt”l) on the Guide for the Perplexed at Bernard Revel Graduate School (1950–1951). My takeaways should not be regarded as authoritative. In fact, my one regret is that I made a last-minute decision to omit an entire portion of the Rav's argument, which I subsequently realized was critical for the level of clarity I was aiming for. Oh well. If you're interested in a fuller understanding of the abstract ideas toward the end of the shiur, you should read at least Kaplan's introduction to this work. You can find my eulogy for Adira here. And my reflection on her shivah here. And my attempt to process my own grieving here.-----מקורות:פאה א:ארמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר זמנים, הלכות מגילה וחנוכה ד:ידאבות ב:טרס"ג - הקדמה לפירוש משליתמיד דף לב עמוד אמשלי א:יז-יט; גיג-טז; ח:יב-כא; י:ד; יא:יז; יד:לדמצודת דוד - משלי כה:כא-כברמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ג:נג-נדירמיהו ט:כב-כגLawrence Kaplan, "Maimonides: Between Philosophy and Halacha" (pp.36,49-50,53)ירושלמי מכות ג:יגרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תלמוד תורה ה:יגBruce Lee's writings-----The Torah content for the month of February is sponsored by the Koffsky family in memory of Adira Rose Koffsky a”h, whose third yahrzeit is on the 11th of Shvat. In this Parshas Review episode, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe as the parsha transitions from Moshe's doubts ("Pharaoh won't listen") to the onset of the Ten Plagues (seven here, three next week), emphasizing Hashem's total control over creation. The rabbi draws a profound lesson from a Talmudic passage in Chagigah: "Woe to those who see but do not realize what they see." The earth rests on pillars, pillars on water, water on mountains, mountains on wind, wind on storm—and the storm rests in Hashem's hand. This chain reveals that everything ultimately depends on Hashem alone—there is nothing to fear, as He holds the keys to all existence. The plagues were not random but targeted demonstrations: Egypt claimed mastery over nature (Nile, animals, atmosphere, darkness), so Hashem overturned each element to prove absolute divine sovereignty. Pharaoh's calm before the storm mirrors our false confidence in health, wealth, or plans—yet one moment can change everything (e.g., the healthy cyclist who died from a tree stump). We blame others for our "plagues" (jobs, health, relationships), but the true message is to look up: all is from Hashem.Daily mitzvot (Shema, Shabbos) remind us of the Exodus—freedom from all slavery (materialism, sports idolatry, distractions). Shabbos is the antidote: a day to "be" rather than "do," stripping away worldly pursuits to focus on Hashem, family, and eternity. The rabbi urges investing in this eternal relationship, as true security lies not in fleeting things but in the unchanging hand of Hashem._____________This episode of the Parsha Review Podcast is dedicated in honor of Lenny & Teresa Friedman and in Loving Memory of Yehoshua Ben Yehuda Leib Z"L and Sarah Bat Yisroel Z"LDownload & Print the Parsha Review Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ncaRyoH5iJmGGoMZs9y82Hz2ofViVouv?usp=sharingRecorded at TORCH Meyerland in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on January 13, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on January 14, 2026_____________Subscribe: Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parsha-review-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1651930083)Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/22lv1kXJob5ZNLaAl6CHTQ) to stay inspired! Send us a textIn Memory of Jackie OwensJoin host Alex Rutledge for a deeply moving and inspirational episode featuring predator hunting expert Eddie Owens. Recorded on January 1st, 2026, just weeks after the passing of Eddie's beloved wife Jackie, this powerful conversation goes far beyond hunting tactics to explore the profound impact of faith, love, and partnership.Eddie shares the beautiful story of how he and Jackie met in seventh grade, their 27-year journey together, and how Jackie transformed from a novice into an accomplished predator hunter who could outshoot her husband. But this episode's heart lies in Jackie's courageous battle with ovarian cancer—how she worked the day after chemo treatments, continued hunting in Montana during her fight, and inspired hundreds with her unwavering faith.Through tears and laughter, Eddie recounts memorable hunts, discusses their favorite rifles and cooking recipes, and delivers a powerful testimony about caregiving, legacy, and trusting God through life's darkest valleys. Jackie's story of strength, grace, and faith touched an estimated 500-800 people at her service and continues to inspire through this heartfelt tribute. This episode is for anyone who:Values faith and family above all elseWants to understand the power of outdoor partnershipsNeeds encouragement during difficult timesLoves authentic stories of courage and legacyPart 1 of a 3-part series on predator hunting. How will you remember 2025? In this deeply personal episode, titled "In Loving Memory of 2025," Heather sets the tone with this quote: “2025 was a year of sacred goodbyes and of release and surrender, healing of the past, closure, kind of trusting cycles, and completing cycles.” Heather's honest and powerful account came after saying goodbye to her father in 20205. Her words demonstrate that loss is more than just an experience of sorrow. She shares that grief can also bring wisdom, connection, and the chance for renewal. If you've ever felt the ache of letting go of a beloved or wondered how to face the uncharted territory of grief and healing, we hope this episode offers not only comfort but a sense of community. Tune in as we weave through memories of 2025, discover lessons for the future, find gratitude even in the most challenging moments, and hold space for the many forms of love that can shape your 2026 and beyond.
What if you could turn regret into wisdom and self-attack into self-love? This week on Love University, we explore how to finally break the grip of regret and live with full freedom and joy. The Regret Weakness is a subtle but persistent thought pattern—the belief that your past defines your future, and that you're somehow unworthy of success, love, or happiness because of previous mistakes and failures. Regret, unfortunately, can lead to paralysis, low self-worth, and a repeated cycle of poor choices. But when reframed into wisdom and self-acceptance, it can be one of your greatest sources of strength and clarity. Here are three essential takeaways from the episode: Separate mistakes from your identity Regret becomes destructive when it turns into self-definition. It's one thing to acknowledge a mistake—it's another to believe that an error or failure means you're fundamentally flawed. The Regret Weakness thrives on that confusion. Because of what happened in the past, you begin to believe you're “bad at relationships,” “not cut out for success,” or “too damaged to change.” But the truth is, the version of you who made those past decisions no longer exists. Healing begins when you stop dragging your old identity into your present and realize that the new you doesn't need to repeat the cycles of the past. Allow progress without perfection A common regret trap is expecting overnight transformation—then feeling like a failure when old habits resurface. But growth isn't linear. You will have setbacks—what matters is how you interpret them. If you shame yourself for every backward step, you reinforce the very patterns you're trying to break. But when you allow yourself to return, recommit, and realign—without judgment—you build emotional strength. The Regret Weakness loses its power when you understand that healing includes imperfection, and growth encompasses wisdom from lessons learned. Convert regret into learning and hope When regret lingers, it's usually because you haven't yet mined the wisdom from the experience. You're stuck in “If only…” instead of “Next time I will…” That shift—looking forward instead of backward—changes everything. Every painful memory contains valuable knowledge: what mattered to you, what you ignored, what boundary you didn't set. When you uncover that meaning, you create a new imprint—a Loving Memory—where wisdom replaces shame, and acceptance surpasses imperfection. Now regret stops being a chain and becomes a compass to the discovery of your most loving and true self. The bottom line: Learn how to erase regret and look forward to a glorious and wonderful future.

Today's episode features Ralph De La Rosa. Ralph was the author of three books, including Outshining Trauma: A New Vision of Radical Compassion (foreword by Richard Schwartz). He was a psychotherapist in private practice and a longtime meditation teacher known for his radically honest and humorous approach. His work was featured in GQ, CNN, NY Post, Tricycle, Mindful Magazine, and beyond.Perhaps most crucial is that Ralph walked the path of outshining trauma alongside the people he worked with. He was a survivor of PTSD, heroin addiction, Borderline Personality Disorder, ADHD, and liver failure. Walking through these matters with the help of profound therapists and mentors became an empowerment no school could have offered. It was simply part of his path to offer back what he had been shown.Ralph mentored personally with Richard Schwartz, founder of the Internal Family Systems model of psychotherapy, known for its efficacy in healing trauma. He also completed an invite-only advanced teacher training with Jack Kornfield. He began practicing meditation in 1996 and trained in a spectrum of yogic and healing traditions, including devotional Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism. Ralph began teaching Buddhist-inspired meditation in 2008. He identified as a practitioner and teacher of human spirituality, offering a highly specialized hybrid of IFS and Buddhism to guide students on a direct path of conscious evolution and self-discovery.As a therapist, Ralph was a summa cum laude graduate of Fordham University. He spent his earliest days working in NYC's clinical foster care system where he trained in multiple modalities of trauma-focused therapy. He maintained a small roster of therapy clients for the love of witnessing transformation up close.Ralph was also an intersectional activist, musician, wannabe acrobat, and outdoor enthusiast, who made his home in Seattle, WA. His teachings and writings continue to inspire and support people navigating trauma and transformation. Some of the topics we covered in this episode include:A beginning guided meditationWhat drew Ralph to IFSOverlaps with ACT and IFSThe value of living with an open heartAnd Ralph guides me through some experiential IFS work—————————————————————————Outshining Trauma: https://a.co/d/cQ8kREn—————————————————————————Thank you all for checking out the episode! Today I learned that a former teacher passed away. I kept telling myself that I would make time to reconnect with Michael and I never did. Michael was an optimist. I have not been, but today I feel like I want to figure it out. Because now there's a little less optimism in the world, and someone needs to pick up the slack.

This week (August 2024) we lost a beautiful, creative voice in our industry - Carole Lyles Shaw. She was a bright light in the quilting world and a very much loved member of our community. Carole was a very talented quilter and teacher but also one of those really positive good friends to so many of us. As I processed the news of her passing the day before her podcast episode was supposed to air last week I just took a pause. It was hard to accept after having interviewed her with so much joy just a few weeks ago, but I've realized that she put in a lot of work to prepare for her episode and it would be good to honour her memory and share her voice and her story with you. My heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. Support the Show.Thank you for listening to the Quilter on Fire Podcast.

In July 2022, Strongsville, Ohio police responded to a car crash where three occupants, including Mackenzie Shirilla, Dominic Russo, and Davion Flanagan, were found. Tragically, Dominic and Davion were pronounced dead at the scene, while Mackenzie survived with critical injuries. Investigators soon shifted their focus from the accident being unintentional to the belief that Mackenzie purposefully crashed the car with the intention of killing both passengers.
