This week we present the second set from the band's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California on May 22, 1982. A fine recording that starts off with a tight 'China>Rider', to lead off a nice pre-drums set. 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' always got the crowd fired up and we also have a Brent number, and a great 'He's Gone' into Drums.. post Drums highlights include a nice 'Not Fade Away' and a rockin' 'Good Lovin' to close the set. While it is a Saturday show, we get a 'U.S. Blues' encore !   Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 5/22/1982 - Saturday Two      China Cat Sunflower [6:51] > I Know You Rider [5:28] > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [6:21]  Never Trust A Woman [5:51]  Lost Sailor [6:25] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:40] > He's Gone [10:#33] > Drums > Space [9:19] > Not Fade Away [10:05] > Wharf Rat [8:28] > Around And Around [3:48] > Good Lovin' [8:31] Encore      U.S. Blues   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod053025.mp3   Thank you so much for your kind support of the Deadpod!

A roaring Scarlet>Fire leads off this week's Deadpod from the second set of the band's performance at the Rainbow Theater in London England on March 20, 1981.  They keep up the momentum throughout, going into a nice Sailor>Saint, then slowing things down with a beautiful He's Gone.. the transition to Drums is worthy of note, as is the transition, led by Phil Lesh, into a rousing Truckin'  that leads off the post-drums segment. Wharf Rat is heartfelt and emotional, but they lead us back into some serious rockin' with Around and Around and Johnny B. Goode, not to mention a nice U.S. Blues encore.  Grateful Dead Rainbow Theatre London, England 3/20/1981 - Friday      Two      Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain > Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance > He's Gone > Drums > Space > Truckin' > Wharf Rat > Around And Around > Johnny B.  Here is the second set from the band's performance at the Boston Music Hall on June 10, 1976. Samson always seemed like a favorite to break out in Boston, and revs things up for a fine 'Help>Slip>Frank' here. Nice harmonies here, and the Slipknot features some upfront work by Keith. Bobby does a fine 'Let It Grow', then we have a mid-set 'Friend of the Devil' - a bit more spacey than usual, but that leads into the highlight of the set, a 'Playin' In The Band' which leads into an excellent 'Space jam'. That eventually goes into 'Dancin' In The Streets' and the band closes out the set with a rocking 'U.S. Blues'.     Grateful Dead Boston Music Hall Boston, MA 6/10/1976 - Thursday Two     Samson & Delilah Help On The Way > Slipknot > Franklin's Tower Let It Grow Friend Of The Devil Playing In The Band > Dancin' In The Streets > U.S. Blues You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod061424.mp3 This space is geting Hot!

This week we continue with the second set from the first night of the band's historic 9 night run at Madison Square Garden in September 1990.  This set sparkles with some excellent Garcia leads throughout, starting with the Scarlet, but Jerry soars in the transition to Fire and in the solos there. The set includes not only a nice jammed out 'Truckin' but a sweet 'Terrapin Station' all before drums.. Phil brings home 'The Other One' nicely, and the Wharf Rat is righteous..      Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 9/14/1990 - Friday Two     Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain > Truckin' > Terrapin Station > Jam > Drums > Space > The Other One > Wharf Rat > Sugar Magnolia Encore     U.S. Blues  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod092923.mp3   "Summertime, done, come and gone, my oh my"..

This week's Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance in Oakland on November 20,1985.  The second set features some very nice highlights, including an excellent Sailor>Saint and an outstanding 'Terrapin Station'. This is a nice long version, punctuated by an excellent jam by Garcia going into the Brent tune 'Don't Need Love'.  The Sugar Magnolia was memorable as Bobby played rock star and climbed up on the speaker stacks during 'SSDD'...      Grateful Dead Henry J. Pardon the brevity but as I'm feeling under the weather this intro will have to be even briefer than usual..  a find second set from the first night of the legendary Madison Square Garden run of 1990 features an excellent 'Scarlet>Fire' .. I love Phil and Jerry's contributions here, especially on the incendiary jams in Fire.. It's been awhile since I've featured a good 'Terrapin Station' and that's here too, as is a wonderful 'Wharf Rat'.  All in all an excellent early 90s second set.. I hope you enjoy it.      Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 9/14/1990 - Friday Two      Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain > Truckin' > Terrapin Station > Jam > Drums > Space > The Other One > Wharf Rat > Sugar Magnolia   Encore      U.S. Blues  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod091622.mp3 Hope you enjoy it, and I look forward to hearing from you.

We kick off our 2019 Deadpods with this energetic and unusual set from 1980. This took place on January 13th, 1980 at the Cambodian Refugee Benefit in Oakland. The band does one long set, and I've included all of it here this week. It is all quite worthy bu I'm especially fond of the laid back 'Franklin's Tower', As well as tight versions of 'Tennessee Jed', 'Looks Like Rain' and 'Don't Ease Me In'. The "second" set features a nice lenghty 'Playin' In The Band'. 'Not Fade Away' and 'Sugar Magnolia' feature Carlos Santana and John Cipolina sitting in, but their contributions are not especially noticeable on the tape, in my opinion.   I hope you find this a pleasant diversion on a Winter's day as we roll into what is usually, to me, a long month of January.   Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, CA (1/13/80) Jack Straw Franklin's Tower New Minglewood Blues Tennessee Jed Looks Like Rain Don't Ease Me In Playin' in the Band drums Not Fade Away Sugar Magnolia U.S. Blues You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod010419.mp3 Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile.

Happy 4th of July! With the 4th falling on a Friday it just seems to be fitting that I play one of the seven shows that the boys played on this date. Since I've already played the 7/4/90 show on the Deadpod, I decided to bring back this beauty from the Summer of 1984.. I happen to think the boys were on a peak during this time (the night before when they played Kansas City is a great show too!), and I decided it would be best to bring you this nice long second set for this holiday Deadpod. Any set that opens with a Help->Slip->Franklin's is off on the right foot, and then Brent delivers a pretty fair 'Far From Me'.. Estimated into He's Gone always opens up new spaces.. I love the Truckin' out of space into a wonderful Wharf Rat, which for me is the highlight of the set.. Of course its nice to have a US Blues encore to celebrate the 4th!! Five Seasons Center, Cedar Rapids, IA (7/4/84) set 2 Help on the Way Slipknot! A truly special show for Super Bowl weekend ;) - the second set, aka  the 'Close Encounters' show - from McArthur Court at the University of Oregon, January 22nd, 1978. I still remember when I first heard this show, it blew me away, and not only because of the weirdness of hearing Jerry quote that theme from the Spielburg movie - but the entire jam that builds up from the Drums and the Other One into that delicious St. Stephen!  I completely enjoy this one, and hope that you do as well.. For me it marks a real turning point for the band, a different direction than they were in the prior year and onward.. Furthur you might say :)  I hope you enjoy it...  McArthur Court (U of Oregon), Eugene, OR (1/22/78) set 2: Bertha Good Lovin' Ship of Fools Samson and Delilah Terrapin Station drums The Other One Close Encounters St. Stephen Not Fade Away Around and Around U.S. Blues You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod013114.mp3 As always, my thanks to my friends who have supported the Deadpod through their kind generosity.  Have a wonderful weekend my friends!

This week's Deadpod features some really unique music from the summer of 1976.. this one comes from the famous run at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco, from July 16th, 1976.. We only have the 2nd set of this show in soundboard quality so that is what I'm going to present.. I think you'll agree that this is a fine example of the more exploratory side of the band that was unfolding after the hiatus of '75 and before the signature sound of 1977.. The entire run is quite worth exploring, and many would argue that the next night, with its magnificent 'Comes A Time' would be a better choice, but we'll keep that in our pocket for a future Deadpod.. This second set has some really unique music, I'm very fond of the Playin'>Jam>Cosmic Charlie.. wowza! and what a set list... not only does Samson follow that, but another great 'Spanish' Jam.. then the Playin' reprise following the Wheel.. just when you think the surprises are surely over.. we get a GREAT 'High Time'.. some folks don't care for this more jazzy or improvisational side of the band, but after its been a bit since I've heard any I am refreshed when I hear it.. I hope you find it so as well..  Orpheum Theatre, San Francisco, CA (7/16/76) set 2 Playin' in the Band-> Stronger Than Dirt jam-> Cosmic Charlie-> Samson and Delilah-> Spanish Jam-> drums-> The Wheel-> Jam-> Playin' in the Band reprise-> Around and Around High Time Sugar Magnolia E: U.S. Blues You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod072613.mp3 The Deadpod is only possible through the generosity of its listeners.
