How do you top a $600 million exit? If you're Peter Rahal, you aim for one that's four times bigger. Anything less, he says, would be a failure.  Peter is one of the co-founders of RXBAR, a platform brand of clean ingredient protein snacks created in 2013. Four years after the brand's debut, it was acquired by Kellogg for the aforementioned nine figure sum. Earlier this year, Peter launched David, which is positioned as “a rigorously perfected protein bar.” Each bar contains 28g protein, 150 calories, and 0g sugar and is described as containing the most protein per calorie of any brand in the bar category. The products are sold direct-to-consumer for $15 for a 4-pack of each flavor, which include Blueberry Pie, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Double Fudge Brownie, and Cake Batter. In August the company announced a $10 million seed funding round, led by Peter and includinged Valor Siren Ventures along with longevity expert and bestselling author Dr. Peter Attia and Stanford neuroscientist and podcast host Andrew Huberman.  In an interview framed as a series of true or false questions, Peter discusses his obsessive work ethic and leadership style and reflects on the business strategy and decisions that helped RXBAR scale rapidly, including the impact of investing in high quality packaging design and customer service. He talks about how to create “the best business strategy” and what he means when he says that happiness is “irrelevant.” Show notes: 0:35: Peter Rahal, Co-Founder, RXBAR & David – Peter explains why, despite having an introverted personality, he tries to be visible and accessible as a founder, whether he's become comfortable with success and why he doesn't necessarily believe that RXBAR's success has to do with time and place. He also discusses his disdain for vacations, why he's a proponent of “servant leadership,” why great packaging is the best form of marketing and why investment in customer service will always pay off. Peter also talks about why founders should strive to create accessible and affordable food and why they have to place a target on the bestselling brand in their brand's category and why his investment strategy hinges on a founder's tenacity and mindset. The sheer idiocy of this mass invasion -- no reasonable thinking man could possibly agree to this. Everyone loves Blueberry pie.  Immigrants came to America to have some Blueberry pie. There are not two Gods. The modern evangelical hates Jesus 1.0 and has re-invented Him as a God who is friends with the world. Fritz Berggren, PhD bloodandfaith.com

The first lesson of Blueberry Pie covers the 3 types of Buyers:Those that want your product or service and value it enough to pay what it's worth. Those that want your product or service and do not value it enough to pay what it's worth. Those that don't want nor value your product or service. The sooner you can learn to accept this and focus on finding Buyer #1's, the sooner you will hit your goals. Do you remember how my interview with Marcia Davidson went? I didn't answer her question about the ones that wouldn't pay her prices. They were Buyer #2's. The second lesson of Blueberry Pie is the ability to separate the emotional from the logical.Buyer #1 and #2 will NEVER buy your pie. When they say no, they are not saying no to YOU. They are saying no to your product or service. They are not offending you, judging you, or belittling you. They just don't want what you are offering. Once you accept that, you can gain the confidence to start saying "next". Beth Lane referenced that most solo cleaners (from her point of view) are introverts and empaths. This makes it extra hard for them to accept this second lesson.

In a recent Solo Elite Membership Call, we talked about one of the biggest struggles in the cleaning industry. This struggle is especially challenging for newbies. And it's not just pricing and how to price. This clip from the Solo Elite walks you through how to remove the emotion around the pricing you give. Wouldn't that be an awesome skill to learn? It will take a few vital other skills.  1.      You MUST be willing to track your cleaning times and analyze them. This allows you to properly estimate ALL future jobs accurately. You can develop a quoting algorithm that allows proper pricing to be predictable. Say that 5 times fast!2.      You MUST know your numbers from your business profit and loss. This allows you to evaluate how much you should be charging per hour or how much profit margin you need to create in your pricing. In other words, you need to know what it costs you to clean 1 hour. Once you know this, you can add profit and charge what you need to.3.      Simply OFFER your prices. Offer this and other price options to cover the various possibilities for the customer to hire you. Hit send. This process gives you an actual pricing process that you know is fair and reasonable. You don't have to wonder if you've priced too high or low. You will know that it is just right and in their hands to say yes or no. Either way, there is no emotion. You offer your "Blueberry Pie" and "Go for No". Make sure to check out those classic Smart Cleaning School episodes.Once you learn how to track, price, and offer, you too will take the emotion out of pricing. Mitch now resides just 9 points off the top of the Championship? Does King have to eat a Blueberry Pie after being adamant that Jaguar won't win? We also talk some more of the creative decisions the series has taken. Including trying to sync up Quali laps, having a mood room Parc Ferme style after the race, and adding extra... rather cringey intros during Qualifying. Dre, King and Cam... weren't impressed and discuss the series overly-contrived attempt to harbour drama. And we try and make some sense of the title picture as we're now 5 rounds down. Are we any closer to figuring out the state of play? We try and find out. All that and more on another M101, stay tuned for Imola real soon!

It was first published in 1769.The book contains some 900 recipes for: soups; main dishes including roast and boiled meats, boiled puddings, and fish; desserts, table decorations and "little savoury dishes"; potted meats, drinks, wines, pickles, preserves and distilled essences. The recipes consist largely of direct instructions to the cook, and do not contain lists of ingredients. The book is illustrated with three fold-out copper plate engravings. The book is noted for its practicality, departing from earlier practice in avoiding plagiarism, consisting instead almost entirely of direct instructions based on Raffald's experience. It introduced the first known recipe for a wedding cake covered in marzipan and royal icing, and is an early use of barbecue. The book remains a reference for cookery writers.http://www.elizabethraffaldsociety.org/ Other bits come from Martha Bradley's book The British Housewife (1758)The title page of book version of The British Housewife, published in 1758,[a] outlines that the work contains information on cookery, pastry, puddings, preserves, pickles, fricassees, ragouts, soups, sauces, jellies, tarts, cakes, creams, custards, candies, dried fruits, sweetmeats, wines, cordials and distilled spirits. The book also contained a chapter on cures for common ailments, which included a recipe that included powdered earthworm to cure ague. The work was divided up into monthly sections, and showed a "sophisticated organisation", according to Davidson.Bradenham Ham (Or Fortnum Black Ham) originated in Wiltshire, England. The ham is first dry-cured in salt, then placed in a liquid cure of molasses, coriander, juniper berries, and other ingredients. After curing, it is aged for 6 months, then smoked. The outside skin of the ham becomes black and shiny. The meat inside is sweet and mild. You can see a great recipe for Brawn at Borough Markets website:https://boroughmarket.org.uk/recipes/brawn Thanks! Pam chats with John and Robin about the online classes they're teaching every month. We highlight what's to come, what's already been done, how people can sign up, pricing, etc. We digress a little and discuss our favorite pies: Cherry Pie, Blueberry Pie, Peach Pie, Pecan Pie, Apple Pie, and Pumpkin Pie, among others (as there were two pie classes—crust and fillings) and our favorite cakes, including Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Brooklyn Blackout Cake, Old-Fashioned Chocolate Cake, Angel Food Cake, Carrot Cake, and more (because as it turns out, Robin's favorite thing to bake is cake). Listen and maybe subscribe and watch these two naturals in action.

Six months ago, I met Michelle at a chamber luncheon and handed her my business card. After the luncheon, I sent a personal video message through VidYard as a follow-up to our meeting. She watched the video and replied back with gratitude. Then she told me she would keep my information on file. Then Corona hit and real estate was crushed, so I wasn't expecting anything. I received a phone call from Lon this week, a local realtor. He wanted an estimate for a sale-ready presentation cleaning for an estate scenario prior to showings as the real estate market opens more. As we talked, Lon mentioned his colleague Michelle and that I was "highly recommended". I NEVER cleaned for this real estate firm or Michelle, yet she highly recommended me. That's the power of making a strong professional impression. My initial handshake and conversation wasn't special, but going the extra mile with a personalized video made all the difference. I booked the job with Lon for $450 and I never even met him.If you're paying attention to this story as I paid attention to details of my conversation with Michelle (to send her a personalized video), you can take your networking to the next level. Every conversation is a seed. There's another takeaway solo cleaners. This job was a 1-time cleaning for $450. I averaged over $60 per hour and I'm just getting started in my new solo cleaning business as a Stabilizer. I used to earn over $100 per hour as an Optimizer in my 1st business. I'll get back to that level, but the point is that 1-time jobs are very profitable. They also lead to other profitable 1-time jobs and recurring jobs. I build my 1st business on real estate 1-time jobs that lead to recurring. Lastly, these 1-time opportunities have helped buffer our income during COVID-19.I followed up with Drew from Town Supply. He went with another cleaning company. If you remember from "Don't Be a Hoarder", Doug's wife said this to him. "This guy knows a lot about cleaning! Can we get him to clean our new office?!" I thought this job was a definite, but it just goes to show - "Blueberry Pie". I wished him well and kept him on my mailing list. Then something interesting happened. Drew considers me the cleaning & disinfecting expert, but he hired another company. He emailed me asking for some disinfecting recommendations. I shared what I'm using and how to get it. Drew ordered it. How many contractors would have said, "you didn't hire me, ask your new service"? That's not going the extra mile and creating positive ripples in your community. I have shared many times before in this podcast that I consider myself an educator first, then a cleaner. In this case, I was able to serve through education. Mike from my MCBA called me this week to set up a cleaning estimate for his house. He's been reading my weekly educational emails, keeping me "Top of Mind". We scheduled an estimate in 2 weeks. The veterinary hospital that I mapped out a few weeks ago gave me the green light on a new cleaning service. The scope and service cost nearly doubled! This is huge. Since the construction is not done yet, they wanted to phase the increased scope. I developed a 3-month plan and got it approved.Read the rest of this article at the Solo Cleaning School website

Bill’s latest book, The Adventures of Spike the Wonder Dog, is a comic novel loosely based on Bill’s TV career that also satirizes today’s media and political culture. Proceeds from the sales of Bill’s book will support animal rescue organizations. Topics this segment include a look at Bill’s early career as a comedy writer (during which time he met and managed the careers of Jay Tarses and Tom Patchett, two of the creative forces behind The Bob Newhart Show) and a important life lesson that Bill learned from his dad after a mishap involving a slice of blueberry pie. Have you ever shopped at the discount racks? This episode is a companion to Blueberry Pie in helping you to understand pricing. Study this and apply it!Teresa needed new jeans, so she went to Kohl's and shopped at the discount racks first because she didn't have much money to spend.. She's looking for a discount and she finds nothing that fits! Some are too short, too long, too tight, not for her body type. Teresa came back home after going to Kohl's and was frustrated. She thought, "Is something wrong with me, with my body? I wasted my time. I'm frustrated." A little background... we've been cutting back, pinching pennies for many years as we've paid off debt. Teresa used to clip coupons and finding deals is her specialty. We still go to the thrift stores to find great deals on second hand clothes for our family. We're not ashamed at that one bit. However, she realized that in the case of jeans, she needed the right fit and the discount racks weren't going to work. She shifted her mindset to go out the second day to just find the jeans that fit. She went back to Kohl's, walking past the discount racks, then checked out another store until she finally found the jeans that fit and she bought 4 pairs!"I knew that there wasn't something wrong with me. I knew that the jeans weren't right." A lot of moms feel the same with cleaning. They can't keep the house in order, clutter all over the place, not clean. They might hire someone and it doesn't work out. They hire another cleaning service and it doesn't work out. They try and try, not finding the right fit. They start to wonder, "Maybe it's me. Maybe it's my house? Maybe it's too messy and people don't want that?" It's not that at all. You just have to shop around at different stores with your eyes looking past the discount racks until you find the right pair of jeans. Solo Cleaning School, I want you to become the type of business that "fits" for your ideal client. How do you learn how to fit your ideal client? You have to build a reputation of trust around you and your brand. Some moms are always going to shop the discount racks for cleaners and some will go to the grocery store for the generic $5 blueberry pie. Don't worry about them. They are not your ideal client. Just keep offering your $15 blueberry pie, build your trust, and keep saying "next" until enough right people try you on and realize that you're the perfect fit.Resources: "Go For No" by Richard FentonThe Solo Cleaning School Premium Membership is where I take these podcasts to the next level and help my members advance through the ISO Model toward profitable solo cleaning businesses without stress or overwork.

They were Buyer #2's.The second lesson of Blueberry Pie is the ability to separate the emotional from the logical.Buyer #1 and #2 will NEVER buy your pie.

What a week we had out in Southold! For the second year in a row, Tom (editors note: That's ME!) hosted me and a few of our friends for a week of incredible food, drinks, and views. Our first meal was at Noah's in Greenport. The incredible Jean Lee(@jeaniuseat) set it up for us, and the team at Noah's knocked it out of the park. From the first bite of Crab Deviled Eggs to the last bite of their Lobster Roll, everything was fresh and full of flavor. Chef Noah takes a lot of pride in being creative with his small plates and left a lasting impression on usFor dinner that night we threw a 5-course meal with some of our friends including Savannah Peterson (@savissavvy) and Brittany Degirolamo(@brita_ny). Jean worked her magic again and got the legend himself Pat LaFrieda to sponsor our dinner. Pat sent us POUNDS of Italian Sausage, his signature hamburgers, and 2 MASSIVE Tomahawk Ribeyes. We also stopped by the Southold Fish Market for some Fluke and Clams. If you've ever listened to our show before you know that while Tom is a Titan in the kitchen, I can throw down a little myself. Tom grabbed the reins of the dinner while I played prep cook and saucier(more on that later)First Course:A Fluke Crudo: Thin slices of local fresh-caught Fluke marinated in citrus with radish and jalapenoThis was such a nice way to start the dinner, fresh fish and bright citrus. A very light dish to get us salivating for everything to come. Tom also flexing with his knife skills, butchering this fish perfectly.Second Course:Cataplana Stew: A North Fork take on a classic Portuguese Stew made with Tomatoes, Clams, and Italian Sausage. This was actually my favorite course of the night. Partly because it was delicious and partly because its something I've never had before. Classically this dish is done with Pork Shoulder and simmered for hours, but this recipe is made with Sausage (Pat LaFrieda's to be more specific) and is packed with flavor. This is a great dish to make for a large groupIntermezzo: LaFrieda CheeseburgersTom grilled up 6 Cheeseburgers (Lettuce Tomato and Kraft Singles) while I went into his fridge and whipped up a Mac Sauce. I learned how to make Mac Sauce a few months ago and this has become my go-to party trick. It's just Mayo, Ketchup, Relish, and a little bit of White Vinegar. If for some reason you don't have White Vinegar you can use Pickle Juice. We cut them up into halves and everyone enjoyed.4th Course: Tomahawks!!!Before getting into this course I just need to describe these two steaks. On the podcast, we described them as "Louisville Slugger, Jason Giambi, Bash Brothers, Mark and José." If you're not a baseball fan, these were BIG BOYS. Tom fired up his kamado grill and got it so hot that it broke the thermometer on the grill. After grilling them to a perfect Medium- Rare with a vicious char they rested for about an hour and when we cut into them they were PERFECT. The Ribeyes melted in your mouth while your jaw was on the floor.Dessert: Briermere Farms PieBrittany and her friend got to the house a little later than the rest of us so we sent them on a mission to pick up dessert from the best bakery out east. Briermere Farms is a North Fork Institution and they did not disappoint with both their Blueberry Pie and their Raspberry Cream Pie. It was the perfect end to the night.I would be totally remiss if I didn't mention the incredible cocktails that we were drinking while all the cooking was going on. My good friend and former guest Yancy Violi (@barandbowtie) and his girlfriend Veronic Lodge(@msveronicalodge) wrote a cocktail menu and came with printed and laminated cocktail menus for the event. Yancy somehow even figured out the font that we used, downloaded it and used it for the menu. The cocktails were sponsored by Hellisoy Vodka(Shoutout to Noah for joining us for dinner) and Hella Cocktail Company. This event was a smashing success and we plan on growing it even larger next year(maybe even a ticketed event coming up sooner than later???)This will probably be our last podcast for the summer as we will be traveling in August and might not be able to record until the fall. Don't worry though because we have some great guests lined up for the fall!

After dealing with all kinds of technical issues, Scott and Mike are finally able to flip the switch and start this new episode. The fellas give Braxton Brewing another chance in their latest collaboration with Graeter’s: Blueberry Pie Brown Ale while discussing the NFL turning down Miami’s request to play stateside, the Rams packing in the Coliseum, Beast Mode’s new show, Bills Mafia in midseason form, dog racing scandals, and USC’s petty. The fellas take calls from listeners while giving their takes on the NHL skipping the Olympics, Kobe getting TWO numbers retired, Notre Dame’s issues and the stacked NFL Hall of Fame class. Mike, feeling the pressure this week, delivers a treat for fans in this week’s “Is Mike a White Motherfucker?” segment.

The rousing bi-annual food magazine,Gather Journal, already has a resounding sense of style. Using such themes as FLOAT, TRACES, and ROUGH CUT in their first few issues, editor Fiorella Valdesolo and creative director Michele Outland, explore narrative ideas like a sense of weightlessness, familiar family memories, and summer movie spectaculars. No wonder they won the 2013 James Beard Foundation Award in Visual Storytelling and two Society of Publication Designers Gold Medals. And then there's the spirited food, from Gazpacho Water to ile Flottante, Squid Ink Pasta to Mexican Wedding Cookies, and Seafood Chum to Slashed Black and Blueberry Pie. Storied recipes this good can best be described by Alfred Hitchcock: “What is drama but life with the dull bits cut out”. This program has been brought to you by Brooklyn Slate. Music by Cookies. “We always thought that each issue was going to be based on a word that would drive the theme in many different directions- but we wanted that word to be loose.” [5:00] — Fiorella Valdesolo on THE FOOD SEEN “I was very interested in pushing the visuals in a way that hasn't necessarily been done in food photography.” [6:00] — Michele Outland on THE FOOD SEEN
