What untold stories from Snow White's history are hidden in the queue of Seven Dwarf's Mine Train? In this episode of Distory, we walk the queue of Walt Disney World's Seven Dwarf's Mine Train to discover not only some fun interactive features that the Imagineers added for guests to discover, but also some hidden secrets you may not even realize are nods to the classic 1937 animation. Kirk takes us on a rabbit trail about thatched roofs, Kate shares an epic task Ken Anderson created for Walt while he was deathly ill, and we both marvel at the techniques the original animators used to create the scenes we know and love from this historic Disney film. After Kirk yells at Kate to spin some barrels and we learn how to eat our soup properly, we share a few personal projects that have us whistling while we work before climbing aboard some hand-crafted mine carts bound for a mine where a million diamonds shine. What was the most successful (and disastrous) animatronic that Disney ever made? In this episode of DIstory, we once again hop aboard Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland in Disneyland as we continue this series about the origins of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. After rounding Cascade Peak and learning about a significant waterfall, we head into bear country to spy some itchy bears, piston fish, and a scary trestle. After hearing an incredibly offensive joke near the Olympic Elk and spending way too long trying to find a red-tailed hawk, we move along to the Living Desert, where Kirk is scared by snakes and Kate gets schooled about Peccaries. Through it all, we point out some pieces of this classic attraction that still exist today that you can look for the next time you're in Disneyland. How are the animals of Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland significant to Disney's history? And why did Disney paint the mine train yellow? In this episode of DIstory, we explore the history of Nature's Wonderland in Disneyland as we chug along in this series about the origins of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. We begin with the transition from Rainbow Caverns Mine Train, discussing some technological improvements (including a few from NASA) that had a massive impact on the attraction's additions. After a brief visit to Rainbow Ridge, we hop aboard our yellow train and head to Beaver Valley, where we meet some friendly beavers and learn how they came to life. After laughing way too much at beaver's antics, we learn the price of a raccoon, hear about Walt's marmot grooming preferences, and hear a joke that made the women on the mine train blush. What inspired the little mining town of Rainbow Ridge? On this episode of Distory, we hold on (loosely?) to our hats and glasses as we embark on the slow-moving Rainbow Cavern's Mine Train, one of the predecessors of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Along the way, we point out some of our favorite sights in the painted desert, including a bizarre group of 7 Dwarfs, a teeny tiny cabin, dangerous rock formations, miniature pueblos, and, of course, the famous Rainbow Caverns themselves. Kirk also loses it over the sound of a “magical” instrument, and Kate points out the origin of a famous Walt quote and also where we get a well-known sign in Radiator Springs. A floating petrie dish. That's what I used to call cruise ships. Yet, we are on a Disney cruise voyage this week because of Disney's values. (or a short illustration of how values create profit.) In January, I got to listen to a Disney executive speak about the organization in a 30-person retreat. We got to ask lots of questions. And without reviewing my notes, I can tell you how Disney uses its values as a filter for all decision-making. Disney's four core values are safety, courtesy, show, and efficiency. They aren't in any random order. When faced with any situation, the first filter is always safety. Or as my friend Erika likes to say as the car climbs the Mine Train, “Disney won't kill me.” For nearly 26 years, my husband has wanted to go on a cruise. And me? I'm in the floating petrie dish camp. I'm not overly concerned about germs, but my Enneagram Seven self is terrified of being trapped somewhere with a bunch of sick people with no escape. And yet, I'm on a Disney cruise next week. What changed? Transparency of a company's values. Because I experienced Disney's alignment of its values to actions and my connection to that value, I changed my mind. From I'm not going on a cruise to spending a good deal of cash with Disney. This week on Monday Mentor is another mini-workshop with me about values with some of the research behind why values create better workplace experiences and more profitable companies.

Now, here's the rundown of what we talked about: Updates from last week:Boo Bash Feedback from the GroupWe asked in the group if people had gone to the Boo Bash and if so, what were your thoughts about it. Here is the feedback we received:Cindy wrote in with this feedback: “My family of 4 attended in late August. My husband and teen boys have done an after hours event but not a MNSSHP. I have. So they had no preconceived notions about what a Halloween event at Disney should be like. They are not really into parades and whatnot, so we basically went for the low wait times. If that is what you are after, then Boo Bash is worth every penny. We basically walked on everything. I think our longest wait was 15 minutes and that was for Mine Train. BUT if you love all of the parades and fireworks and stage shows that normally come with MNSSHP and you don't really care about rides, then you will probably be disappointed.”Cheddar from the Big CheeseBrenda: The Epcot International Festival of the Arts is scheduled for January 14 - February 21, 2022! http://www.attractionchecklist.com - Hang on to your hats and glasses because we're riding the wildest ride in the wilderness, Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain on this episode of Attraction Checklist. Recorded on May 18, 2021. TRANSCRIPT: This episode we head to Frontierland in Disneyland to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The Disneyland Resort website describes this attraction saying: Streak through a haunted gold mine aboard a speeding train on this thrilling coaster-style ride. Guests musts be 40” or taller in order to ride and the Thrill Level describes the ride as being a Thrill Ride that is Dar, Loud and has small drops. Before we chew on some dynamite, here are five fast facts about Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. 1. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad opened at Disneyland on September 2, 1979. 2. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland is built on an area of the park previously occupied by the Mine Train through Nature's Wonderland Attraction. The town that you pass at the very end of the ride is the town of Rainbow Ridge and it used to overlook the loading platform of the Mine Train attraction. Many of the attraction's animatronic animals are also repurposed from Mine Train through Nature's Wonderland. 3. The attraction features 6 trains that all have different names. Those names are I.M. Brave, I.M. Bold, I.B. Hearty, U.R. Fearless, U.B. Courageous and U.R. Daring. 4. Several of the attraction's train sound effects were recorded and used in the film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. 5. The trains can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour (or 56 Kilometers per hour) during the 3 minutes adventures. Let's ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Along for the adventure is John B. deHaas and after we ride we'll give you our thoughts on this attraction. This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones put them on now as we ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland. Thanks for downloading WEDWay Radio. This is the Disney history show. This is the follow up to episode 1 - The Western River Expedition. On this episode we pose this question to our listeners and discuss the answers: Would you rather have the entire Thunder Mesa area including the Mine Train, Pack Mules, Walking Trials and The Western River Expedition at Walt Disney World or what would eventually come to occupy and replace that area and budget money - Pirates of the Caribbean, Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain? Why? Enjoy!
