Hamilton's advanced load in arrived at the Orpheum Theater on Sunday, May 4th, while the show did its final performance in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Four days later, the show will begin for Nebraskans in Omaha. How does this happen? How does a crew of 70 move a whole stage production over 12 hours, and have it ready to run again within four days?

Today, I'm so excited to welcome the incredibly talented Lauren Marcus to the show! Lauren is a powerhouse in the theater world, currently performing in The Jonathan Larson Project at the Orpheum Theater, celebrating the lesser-known works of the legendary Rent composer. You might also recognize her from the film adaptation of Tick, Tick… Boom!, which she filmed during the early days of the pandemic. But beyond her impressive resume, Lauren is also a mom—navigating the ups and downs of parenting while balancing a busy career in entertainment. In this episode, we get real about what it means to be both an artist and a mother—the joys, the struggles, and those moments when you're just trying to survive on broken sleep and sheer determination. Lauren opens up about her journey through pregnancy, her challenging birth experience, and how she's adjusting as her daughter approaches her first birthday. We talk about everything from the pressure to “bounce back” after having a baby to the constant juggle of work, childcare, and personal identity. And, of course, we share some laughs (and maybe a few rants) about things like baby sleep schedules, toddler tantrums, and the challenge of keeping our language in check around little ears!Lauren also shares what it's like to take her daughter on the road while performing, the realities of finding childcare when you work unpredictable hours, and the emotional weight of being away from home for long stretches. It's a conversation full of honesty, humor, and that deep understandingthat only comes from talking to another mom who gets it.We also dive into the emotional tug-of-war so many of us feel—missing the freedom of our pre-motherhood selves while absolutely loving this new, all-consuming role as parents. Lauren and I talk about how our careers have shifted since having kids, the guilt that creeps in whether we're working or at home, and the constant challenge of making it all work. Spoiler alert: no one has it figured out, and that's okay!Whether you're a working mom trying to balance it all, a fellow theater parent navigating unpredictable schedules, or just someone who loves a good, honest conversation about the beautiful mess of motherhood, this episode is for you. So grab a cup of coffee (or reheat the one you forgot about three hours ago), get comfy, and join us for a heart-to-heart with the amazing Lauren Marcus.Let's get into it!
BSC favorites Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks join us this week for a scorching set captured at The Orpheum Theater at the intersection of Beale and Main St. in Memphis. The band had just released its fifth album, Live At The Fox - Oakland.
In this episode, we take a deep dive into the Off-Broadway gem "The Jonathan Larson Project," currently playing at the iconic Orpheum Theatre in NYC. We explore this captivating song cycle that brings to life unheard works from the revolutionary composer of "Rent" and "tick, tick... BOOM!" Join us as we dissect the emotional resonance of Larson's newly discovered songs, highlight standout performances (including the mesmerizing Taylor Iman Jones), and debate the show's structure and potential future. We'll unpack how this production reflects the journey of an unknown artist finding their voice, discuss the refreshing yet challenging concept of a song cycle, and analyze how the musical arrangements breathe new life into Larson's previously unperformed works. Plus, we'll share our firsthand experience at the Orpheum Theater and how it connects audiences to Larson's roots. Is "The Jonathan Larson Project" a must-see celebration of a Broadway legend or does it need a clearer narrative to truly engage audiences? What an incredible joy it was to spend some time talking face to face with one of my all-time favorite artists — Julian Casablancas of The Voidz and The Strokes — for episode 113 of the LSQ podcast. We met up for this interview backstage at LA's Orpheum Theater just after The Voidz played a mind-blowing set, including music from their awesome new album, Like All Before You. Although we're old friends and have done more than a few interviews over the years, this conversation allowed us to touch on subjects we'd never reached in the past. In addition to talking about both of his bands and how their goals have evolved, we discuss Julian's own development as a songwriter and musician, starting with his teenage years learning to play songs by Nirvana and Green Day on guitar as a springboard for writing his own tunes, how he gained the confidence to begin sharing his music with friends (at one point pretending that his own composition was a Rancid tune, just to see what people thought of it), and how long it took before he finally felt like his writing was on the right track (turns out it wasn't until the Strokes song “Soma,” during the bands early days). He also shares about his songwriting practice (sometimes they come to him in dreams) and about the moments when he feels most inspired by the creative process. And more! Keep up with The Voidz here!
From Marla Mindelle, creator and star of "Titanique," comes a new comedy that sees its protagonist, Stacey, trapped inside a musical. Will she find (or sing) her way out? Mindelle joins us to discuss "The Big Gay Jamboree," which she co-wrote and stars in. The show is running at the Orpheum Theater through January 19.
The historic Orpheum Theater will host the Broadway tour of "Back To The Future."How well does it follow the movie series? Find out from someone who starred in the movie and someone who is part of the current touring cast, and they both played the same character!
In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles welcomes award-winning writer, director, and producer Eric Green. Eric reflects on other notable concerts, including several Lollapalooza festivals in the 90s, and iconic shows by Green Day, Aerosmith, and Ringo Starr. The discussion also covers his most surprising and disappointing concert moments. Eric talks about his background in filmmaking, highlighting his documentary 'Life on the V,' which explores the story of the short-lived Boston music video TV station V66. He delves into the significance of V66 in promoting local music and its addition to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's library and archives. The theater production of the Lion King is many things: iconic, awe-inspiring, exciting and overwhelming for people with sensory differences and disabilities. Hennepin Theater Trust partnered with Fraser, a local non-profit for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, to put on a sensory-friendly version of the show. Its changes include lower sound levels, freedom to get up and move around the theater, sensory rooms and trained staff. The performance is Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Orpheum Theater in St. Paul. Heather Thelen and her son Ben plan to attend and she joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about it.
The beginning of April in 1994 marked the start of a stretch that may go down as one of the most important runs in Pearl Jam's history. It all starts with the Fox Theater show in Atlanta that everybody knows, and then shortly afterward the news of Kurt Cobain's death shocked the world. Pearl Jam would go on to play a legendary show at the Orpheum Theater and then shortly after, they are front and center on Saturday Night Live. This show we're covering here is from Rochester that took place the day before Cobain's death was announced. After a few instances of playing through some tough off stage issues in the middle of the tour, this was during a run where the band was on a big time hot streak. This show has some notable moments that makes it stand out among the others from this tour. Wash was the show opener, something that was so rare for the time that they had only done it once all tour. On top of that, it's a big highlight from this show. This night features the second version of Corduroy ever played. We'll break that down into detail and discuss how some of the identity remains the same as today, but little tweaks afterwards have made it more of a showstopping performance. And we'll talk about Ed's quote in reaction to the real story about Jeremy. Many great performances, and stories from our Patron Robert Rieb who requested this episode! Tremonti and Kennedy showcased some beautiful signature Paul Reed Smith guitars, as well as a not-yet-released PRS signature amp. Thanks to techs Dave Pate and Scott Davis for their help with the details.Brought to you by D'Addario Strings.

With fellow drummer Bill Kreutzmann, Hart formed one-half of The Rhythm Devils, keeping time for the Dead between 1967 and 1971, rejoining in 1974 and remaining through 1995. While Hart largely left songwriting duties to his band mates, he did contribute to one of the Grateful Dead's signature songs, “Fire On The Mountain.”Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter wrote the words to “Fire On The Mountain.” In Hunter's book of lyrics, Box Of Rain, he described the circumstances surrounding the writing of the song, which sound strikingly similar to the current situation in parts of California and surrounding states. Hunter wrote: Written at Mickey Hart's ranch [in Novato, California] in heated inspiration as the surrounding hills blazed and the fire approached the recording studio we were working … The official Grateful Dead website, Dead.net, further describes the early stages of “Fire On The Mountain,” explaining:Hart, credited with the music for the song, recorded a proto-rap version of the song for an unreleased album entitled Area Code 415, recorded in 1972 and 1973. It was also included on a Mickey Hart album entitled Fire On The Mountain, recorded in 1973-74. It appeared as an instrumental entitled “Happiness is Drumming” on Hart's 1976 studio album, Diga. And it finally began showing up in the Grateful Dead repertoire, sung by Jerry Garcia, in 1977, undergoing a number of variants of the lyrics until it settled into the form that was eventually recorded and released on Shakedown Street, in November 1978. He was 76. Died at home in Sag Harbor, NY of skin cancer Buffett's hits like Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise which mingled country rock with bits of calypso melodies and had wry lyrics about the care free life of boating and loafing at beachside bars, made him a cult hero on a huge scale. He sold 23 million albums in the US, on part with Jimi Hendrix and the Beastie Boys Buffett was one of pop music's most successful and ambitious businessmen, building an empire on the brand of good times and island escapism that he celebrated in his songs. That included Margaritaville restaurants and resorts, footwear, drink mixes and a 2018 Broadway jukebox musical, Escape to Margaritaville. This year Forbes estimated Jimmy's net worth at $1 billion. SHOW #4: Scarlet Begonias Jimmy Buffet August 2, 2023 (Jerry's 80th birthday) Maine Savings Amphitheatre Bangor, Maine Scarlet Begonias (Garcia tribute) - Jimmy Buffet 08/02/22 Maine Savings Amphitheater Bangor,Maine - YouTube Start – 1:30 n celebration of legendary Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia's 80th birthday, which occurred (August 1, 2022), Jimmy Buffett performed a cover of the seminal Robert Hunter/Garcia penned number, “Scarlet Begonias” while on stage at the Maine Savings Amphitheater in Bangor, Maine, last night. Following a hefty rain delay, his 28-song set ensued as Buffett reminisced on the times he and his band spent performing with the Grateful Dead years ago. He also offered a shout-out to the Deadheads in the crowd before a groovy light display and hypnotic imagery engulfed the stage.Prior to the start of the song, Buffett addressed the crowd; he stated: “Jerry, wherever you are, here you go.” Of course there is a crossover between Deadheads and Parrotheads – both high devoted fans who travel to see their band, dress for the occasion, attend shows in “slightly altered states” from different substaces, know all the words to all the songs and have seen their band too many times to count. Jimmy also appeared on the World Wide Ripple video in 2020. I cannot find any instance of the Dead covering a Jimmy tune. Also, RIP Steve Harwell, Smash Mouth vocalist, who sang the band's big 1999 hit, “All Star”. Still a hit today, unique voice. Died on Sept. 4th age 56 OUTRO: Margaritaville Jimmy Buffet Key West, FL February 9, 2023 Jimmy Buffett “Margaritaville” LIVE in Key West, Florida 2/9/23 - YouTube 3:00 – 4:25 While Buffett made his home and name in Key West, Fla., after struggling to make it big in Nashville, the Lone Star State had a special place in Buffett's history. Legend has it he came up with the concept for the 1977 song “Margaritaville” at a bar in Austin. The slightly mournful tune about a day at the beach went on to define Buffett's career as a laidback beach bum with a guitar and has been covered plenty of times, as well as inspired a line of margarita mix, frozen snacks, apparel, and a significant chain of restaurants and resorts. According to multiple stories in the Austin American-Statesman archives, the original Margaritaville was "a Mexican restaurant on Anderson Lane." Others specifically claim it was Lung's Cocina del Sur, at 2700 W. Anderson Lane, which is now a bowling alley. But here's what Buffett himself had to say in a memorial for close friend Jerry Jeff Walker in Texas Monthly, reminiscing on visits to Texas in the 1970s: “I came to Austin a lot in those days. I made it there by getting these college bookings and getting on Willie's second Fourth of July picnic. I played Castle Creek many times. I think it was after one of those shows, the next morning I had a hangover and I had to fly home that afternoon,” Buffett told Texas Monthly. “I went to El Rey, a Mexican restaurant on Anderson Lane for lunch. I had a margarita, which helped with the hangover, and in the car on the way to the airport the chorus of a new song started to come to me. I wrote a little more on the plane and finished the rest of ‘Margaritaville' back in Key West.” Farewell Jimmy – off to Margaritaville for good.

On Nov 15th and 16th, 2022, The Origins Project Foundation hosted their first public events in North America at the beautiful Orpheum Theater in Phoenix, AZ (we had hosted an event in Iceland in September during our Greenland-Iceland Travel Adventure). There was no better way to begin this new series than with a dialogue onstage with Richard Dawkins, and that was the substance of our first night's event. As all those who have followed us will know, Richard and I have done many dialogues together, onstage and online, and so it was important that this dialogue be new and different. Richard had just published a new book entitled “Books do Furnish a Life”, which is a compilation of essays he had written about other scientists and writers, and also transcripts of dialogues he had had with numerous people, including me. I decided this new book would provide a wonderful opportunity to jump off in new directions, and it turned out to be just that. The response from the audience and from those who had seen many of our previous dialogues was very positive, and we came off stage feeling like it was one of the best public conversations we have had. I hope those of you who watch it, or listen to it, here will agree. Following our 90 minute dialogue onstage we asked for questions from the audience, and after an intermission, we answered many of these. This Q&A will be offered as an exclusive post for Critical Mass paid subscribers, to thank you for your support of our efforts. It will remain behind the Critical Mass paywall for 1 month, and then will be released to the general public. I hope all of you enjoy this conversation, and Richard's remarkable enthusiasm about science and writing, and his insights about the world. In a future post, we will release the video record of the second night's conversation, a panel discussion with leading physicists about the current state of cosmology. Finally, later this month we will open our newest travel adventure, a trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos Island, for booking for the general public. Critical Mass subscribers will have an advance opportunity to book one of the 36 berths on this voyage. Stay tuned. As always, an ad-free video version of this podcast is also available to paid Critical Mass subscribers. Note: Due to internet difficulties due to storms in California delaying uploading of the video, the video post of this podcast will be delayed by a few hours. We are thus releasing the audio version now. (Usually these are released at the same time.) Seven years ago I invited Elizabeth Kolbert to participate in a dialogue about Extinctions at the Orpheum Theater in Phoenix, following the publication of her Pulitzer Prizewinning masterpiece, The Sixth Extinction. Once we began The Origins Podcast, I knew that I wanted to have an in depth discussion with her about her work reporting on science issues, most importantly on climate change and other technological challenges facing modern society. An opportunity arose with the publication of her most recent book, Under a White Sky, which focuses on how scientists, and politicians, have attempted—with with widely varying degrees of success—to address the unintended consequences of various human alterations of terrestrial ecosystems. It is a fascinating book, told, as is typical in her writing, by relating personal experiences as Elizabeth has traveled the world to meet scientists and others spearheading attempts at solving sometimes urgent ecological crises induced as a result of the application of previous human technologies. Elizabeth writes so clearly about science that I wanted to explore her own journey, from a student focusing on German literature, to one of the pre-eminent science writers in the country, working as a staff writer for The New Yorker Magazine. We had a wide ranging discussion about her own experiences and then moved on to discuss more broadly the issues raised in her most recent books. Incidentally, the title of her new book comes from the fact that one of the side-effects of solar geoengineering, which I expect will be an inevitable response to climate change in a world where governments and businesses prefer to carry on business as usual in spite of concerns about rising temperatures, sea levels, and other potentially dangerous consequences of increasing CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. The effect in question, if aerosols are injected in the upper atmosphere to reduce the intensity of solar radiation impinging on the earth's surface, will be to cause formerly bright blue skies to instead resemble the whiter skies those who live in big cities are used to. A potentially unfortunate consequence, but perhaps less unfortunate than other potential consequences of global climate change. The conversation was fantastic. Everything I had hoped for. We went on for over 2 hours, but the time passed quickly because it was so fascinating. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. And by the way, if you enjoy this podcast, Elizabeth will be joining the Origins Project Foundation Galapagos Travel Adventure in January of 2024. Reservations will open up at the beginning of April for this exciting trip, with Elizabeth, Frans de Waal, me, and 33 other Origins voyagers. This week's Deadpod features the continuation of the band's performance at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco on July 13, 1976. There are issues with the tape on 'Music Never Stopped' but this clears up quickly so please be patient. 'It Must Have Been the Roses' follows, then 'Samson' but the highlight here is a beautiful version of 'High Time'.
