And on the Interview Hour, we welcome the boys from hyper-prolific modern-day jam band, Kendall Street Company! This is a band that starts with a plan and finishes off with a touch of chaos. You know I was thinking- if Kendall Street Company was a meal, it'd be a buffet where you start with breakfast, accidentally hit a taco station, and in a psychedelic stupor, end the night by eating fondue off a former NFL cheerleader's six pack. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

JJ Grey joins me this week to get Season 8 rolling in style!JJ is an incredible singer, songwriter, guitar player and frontman for his band JJ Grey and Mofro, based in the Jacksonville, Florida area. He's been making soulful, brash, and deeply authentic soul and rock n roll records since the release of “Blackwater” in 2001. JJ has a brand new album out now called “Olustee”, which is a remarkable record due to the stellar material and inspired performances perfromances, but also in how it was made. We had a chance to sit down and talk about how it all came together, as well as his songwriting and recording process, how he records his vocals with a $15 microphone, getting janky guitar sounds (janky is his own term, as you'll hear), along with self-producing for the first time and working on mixing the new record with Vance Powell. Enjoy my conversation with JJ Grey! You can get all the info on the new album and his extensive worldwide tour dates at jjgrey.comIf you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the show with a donation or Patreon subscriptionThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.comYour fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at www.stevedawson.caThis season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman Amplification Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/mmasspodcast. JJ Grey joins me on Roadcase for this week's episode and I couldn't be more psyched!!  I recently caught up with JJ while in the midst of a massive US tour, having recently released his ninth studio album and first since 2016, entitled Olustee. A proud native Floridian, JJ is an intriguing artist with a unique view on life and his creative pursuits. I talked to JJ about his almost Zen-like qualities and what that has meant for him along the route from rural Florida, to London, and back again. "You don't so much sail across the Ocean; you simply put up a sail and let the wind blow you across," he explains to me. Yes, it's really that type of interview!  JJ is filled with homespun charm and a humble nature that is both endearing and intriguing, and I'm here for it.  Make sure to check out this super chill interview on this week's episode of Roadcase! My guest this week is keyboardist, Bill McKay. It's impossible not to hear Bill's name when you're a musician in the Denver area. He's everywhere and plays with everyone! McKay first moved to Colorado for college in 1987, and immediately started playing in bands while working on his degree at Colorado College. He toured with "soul 'n roll" outfit, Band Du Jour from 1990-1995 right out of college, then moved to Atlanta to join The Derek Trucks Band as the lead singer and keyboarding from 1995-2000. Moving back to Colorado, McKay spent the next decade as a member of Leftover Salmon. Bill has also played with Coral Creek, Steely Dead, The Other Brothers, and Bill McKay Band. Towards the end of our conversation, Bill talks about his past struggles with addiction, and getting sober 12 years ago. He invites anyone who is in need of a friend or someone to talk to, to reach out on his website: www.billmckaymusic.com. This week we welcome Jordan Sokel of PRESSING STRINGS. Pressings Strings lends credence to my feeling of never missing opening bands. I saw the band take an audience to a place they were not expecting to go, right to the merch table to purchase everything they could from the band.  Pressing Strings first formed in 2006 while Sokel was still in college. The band officially debuted in 2008 with their album, Where We Are, and now has a deep catalog that includes the albums Episodes (2010), Pressing Strings (2012), Life of a Tree (2013), Owe the Source (2015), and Settle In (2020) as well as two EPs, Most of Us (2016) and Morning Takes (2021). As Pressing Strings built up their impressive live show and paid their dues gigging, their fame was spreading throughout the entire Eastern Seaboard, leading to headlining venues across Maryland and Washington, DC and frequent festival appearances at Peach Music Festival, Firefly, Sweetwater 420 Fest, Floydfest, and more. Over the last decade, Pressing Strings has also toured and opened for the likes of The Beach Boys, Gov't Mule, Toad the Wet Sprocket, JJ Grey & Mofro, Rachael Yamagata, Neal Francis, The Toadies, Jerry Douglas, Sam Roberts Band, Michael Glabicki (Rusted Root), Rayland Baxter, and Junior Marvin of the Wailers. In addition to their touring success and amassing over 6 million streams, radio has also taken notice, with national AAA and public broadcasters across the U.S. eagerly embracing Pressing Strings and taking them to the top of their charts.PRESSING STRINGS - "And I For You"        OUT NOW!!!Thanks for listening!!! Hailing from Portland Oregon TK and the Holy Know Nothings are band you have to hear. They call their music “Psychedelic Doom Boogie which is the raddest description I've heard in a long time. They have a hefty honk-tonk vibe, but there are all sorts of influences in their music. Everything from Rock to Beat poetry. Taylor Kingman, the lead singer and songwriter not only puts together sonically interesting tunes, his lyrics are deep and insightful as well. Drawing on influences like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg the songs explore characters and situations that are intriguing and thought provoking. I had a chance to chat with them when they stopped by Lake Tahoe on tour with JJ Grey. I met up with them after sound check at the show and talked to lead singer Taylor, guitar player Jay Cobb Anderson, and bass player Lewi. We had a fun casual conversation about their most recent release, “The Incredible Heat Machine. I hope you dig it!

My guest today is bassist, Todd Smallie. After his family moved to Atlanta at the age of 14, Todd got very involved with the local scene and attended the Atlanta Institute of Music, where he got to learn from the likes of Jimmy Herring. Connections with Herring, Tinsley Ellis, Col. Bruce Hampton, and others led him to an audition with The Derek Trucks Band in his early 20s. He toured and recorded with Derek up until 2010 when Derek teamed up with Susan Tedeschi to start Tedeschi Trucks Band. Todd didn't sit stagnant for too long, as he started playing with JJ Grey & Mofro just a few months later, and has spent the last 11 years as a member of that group. (NOTE: The band, Greyhounds, made up of former Mofro members Anthony Farrell and Andrew Trube were my guests on the very first episode of this podcast). When he's not touring, Todd can be found playing at bars, clubs, and festivals with an assortment of acts all over Colorado. In our conversation, we chat about getting back on the road for the first time since COVID, his upbringing and history as a player, and all of the new projects he's involved in locally. Aside from his work with the U.N., Eckels has been making a name for himself as a touring artist since the 90s when he traveled the country with his Springfield, Missouri based group, Speakeasy. That band played the first Wakarusa Festival and toured with the likes of Umphrey's McGee and JJ Grey & Mofro. He also recently started a power trio with Colorado mainstays Todd Smallie (Derek Trucks, JJ Grey & Mofro) and Shaun Gilmour. In our conversation, we chat about his experiences on the road and his collaborations as a songwriter.
