Author River Selby visits the Northwest Passages Book Club to talk about her new book "Hotshot: A Life on Fire." Spokesman-Review writer Elena Perry asks Selby about fighting wildland fires in the live interview at the Montvale Event Center Monday, Oct. 20, 2025 in Spokane, Washington.
Dave opens this Tuesday Dopey Patreon teaser by reflecting on feeling burnt out, upcoming dental implant surgery, and the need to slow down. He jokes about “cultivating illness” to get rest and shares his current obsession with the Martin Scorsese documentary series Mr. Scorsese, hoping listeners will “pray and manifest” Scorsese appearing on Dopey. He talks about Scorsese's film legacy, calling Goodfellas untouchable.Dave reads a Spotify comment from Emma about a pork ad and debates if it's anti-Semitic, then begins a new segment reading from Miles Davis's autobiography — a vivid story about Charlie Parker pawning Miles's belongings for heroin.Next, longtime Dopey Nation member Selby calls in with a story about getting through TSA with weed gummies and ends with “stay strong, Dopey Nation, and fucking toodles for Chris.” Dave laughs about TSA searches, harmonicas being mistaken for weapons, and promises either to play harmonica on the road or stop traveling with it.The teaser transitions into the Patreon preview with Ray Brown and Dave's dad, where a discussion about politics erupts — his dad talks about kindness, empathy, immigration, and frustration with leadership. Dave tries to steer it back but ends up apologizing for the tangent. The teaser closes with Dave's song “I Wanna Be Good So Bad,” a raw, humorous original with lyrics about bad desire, frustration, calling his dad, and seeking peace and love. Welcome to our second episode with women and non-binary firefighters who have written books about their experiences working both in fire and on hotshot crews more specifically. Our guest for this episode is HOTSHOT author River Selby (they/them), who spent seven years as a wildland firefighter—four of which were as a hotshot—from 2000 to 2010. They've since gotten their undergrad and MFA (in fiction) at Syracuse, and are currently working towards a PhD in Nonfiction with an emphasis in postcolonial histories, North American colonization, and postmodern literature and culture. This unique background allowed River to create a phenomenally in-depth book that covers not only their own experiences of working on crews and personal vignettes of life on and off the fireline, but it also paints a rich history of different fire ecologies across the American West (and world), and how colonization and fire suppression in the Western US (and elsewhere!) have set the stage for our modern relationship with fire. In our conversation, River and I talked about how firefighting allowed them to heal and grow, in a way, from the addiction, homelessness and violence that they had experienced in their youth. We spoke about some of the more academic themes of the book, including how colonization really informed our modern culture of fire suppression and—by extent—the culture of hotshotting. We spoke about the importance of Indigenous practices and land stewardship in righting this ship, as it were, and chatted a bit about our own experiences with hotshot culture and how it framed our experiences on fire crews. On the fifty- first episode of All the Film Things, my friend and ATFT regular, writer/ director Samy El- Kamel is back for an analytical discussion about Darren Aronofsky's 2000 psychological drama classic, Requiem for a Dream! This episode is spoiler- filled and contains explicit language.Darren Aronofsky's sophomore feature, Requiem for a Dream, continues to be talked about today yet it's a curious case as it's respected but beloved may not be exactly the perfect word. This film is often regarded as "the best film you'll never rewatch" due to its bleak but impactful ending. Requiem for a Dream follows four people, all connected to Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto), who are striving to achieve their dreams in the most dangerous, self- destructing ways through their addictions. While Harry's mother Sara (Ellen Burstyn) tries her hardest to lose weight to look her best on television, he along with his girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) and friend Ty (Marlon Wayans) are addicted to heroin. The three of them hope to turn their ideas of being successful businessmen into a reality but the need for heroin persists. Though widely considered a psychological drama, Aronofsky considers this film an “urban horror film” in the sense that the film captures a dream that turns into a nightmare. This film is based on Hubert Selby jr's novel published in 1978 and Aronofsky was happy to involve Selby in the making of this film (he even makes a cameo towards the end!). Even though Requiem for a Dream is still celebrated today, the film only earned one Oscar nomination in the "Best Supporting Actress" category for Ellen Burstyn. Of all the films I have seen, there is nothing quite like Requiem for a Dream from the cinematography to the editing to its lasting impact which has made me eager to devote an episode to the film. This is Samy's fourteenth time on the podcast, sustaining his place as the second most frequent guest on the show! I had been wanting to do an episode on Requiem for a Dream for over three years now and it was a hard topic to pitch to others. Those who have yet to see the film were hesitant to watch it while those who have seen the film, did not want to revisit it. Thankfully Samy, although slightly reluctant, was up for the challenge. While it is hard for both of us to say this is one of our favorite films, we have a deep respect for it and would probably regard it as one of the best films we've ever seen. This episode was recorded on September 18, 2025. Samy recently premiered his latest short film, “Anatomy of a Panic Attack” at the “Take it or leave it” short film showcase at MOCA Jacksonville. While the short has not yet been released online, Samy's short film "Waveform" was recently screened at the Jax Fuse Film Festival. Watch short films "Waveform", "Neurafridge", and more of Samy's past work by subscribing to his YouTube channel, Barefoot Python Media, by clicking this link.In this episode, Samy and I talk about our first experiences watching Requiem for a Dream, each character's motivations for taking drugs, and why people should challenge themselves to watch the film at least once. While Samy discusses the impact of Sara Goldfarb's storyline, I explain why the role of Harry Goldfarb is perfectly aligned with Jared Leto's trademark character type. All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue, a documentary about an Israeli couple driving across the country on Oct. 7 to save their children from Hamas terrorists attacking Kibbutz Nachal Oz, opens in select theatres this week. And down the line, once the film's revenue is more clear, the filmmakers plan to donate proceeds from the film to the kibbutz itself, which is being rebuilt, just a few kilometres from the Gaza border. It's a gesture that director Barry Avrich and producer Mark Selby, both of Toronto, are eager to make, after all their film has been through. The Road Between Us _was initially invited to hold its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, but was abruptly rejected just days before tickets went on sale. The unexpected ban made international headlines before the film was re-admitted shortly afterwards. _The Road Between Us _went on to win the TIFF People's Choice Award for documentaries, despite being granted only one scheduled screening (and a hastily arranged second one at the awards ceremony). Now with the controversy behind them, the filmmakers are prepping for a week-long run in 20 theatres across in Canada. On today's episode of The CJN's _North Star, host Ellin Bessner sits down with Avrich and Selby, who reveal behind-the-scenes details about what it was like to tell this harrowing story. People talk quite a lot about things like 'shift left" that make it sound as if it is a new concept -- sold at your finer consultancies -- to build things properly in the first place. After two decades of incident response, smoke jumping and Tech Debt burndowns, I think it's time to talk about the way teams can build security not just into the product but into the company culture by examining some basic realities of the product development process. This is not just for tech companies; it's for any firm with a process by which they turn ideas into money. Because for all the SDLC tools, all the configuration platforms, the code scanners, and the security and code testing doodads out there, nothing in my experience works as well as starting with the basics: including security and legal experts as well as the people who manage the internal services that will be your upstream and downstream dependencies at the ideation stage. The amount of weapons-grade stupid, the mountain ranges of tech debt, and the broken business promises that this simple plan can avoid make it hard to believe that it's so rare to find these practices in mainstream companies. In this talk, I will describe the most common side effects of failing to do this, how those side effects manifest into cultural roadblocks, silos, and sadness, and most important: how you can break the cycle, slash through the Gordian knot of despair and missed deadlines, and return to cranking out product like a start up. About the speaker: Nick Selby is the founder of EPSD, Inc., and he has more than 20 years of experience advising organizations in highly targeted industries. Previously, he led professional services at Evertas and served as Interim Executive Director of the Cryptoasset Intelligence Sharing and Analysis Center. His executive roles have also included stints at Trail of Bits and Paxos Trust Company. He managed cyber incident response at TRM Partners and N4Struct, and in 2005 founded the information security practice at 451 Research (now S&P Global Intelligence), where he served as Vice President of Research Operations until 2009. As Director of Cyber Intelligence and Investigations at the NYPD (2018-2020), Selby led cybercrime investigations for America's largest police department. Selby serves on the Board of Directors of the non-profit National Child Protection Task Force and the advisory board of Sightline Security. While retired from law enforcement, he continues to serve as a reserve detective for a Dallas-Fort Worth area police agency, where he investigates crimes against children and the cyber aspects of real-world crimes.

And just days before, he got to play this massive farewell show. It's wild how fast life moves. In the middle of all this, Meta took down the Dopey Instagram. Ten years of dumb memes, serious moments, milestones, and memories—just gone. I know it's just a page, but it's frustrating to see how little the bots understand what we do. We talk more about it on the full Patreon show.I also reflect on the trip—hiking with my kids, seeing wolves and geysers, and even running into a Dopey fan in Yellowstone. Selby and I get into all of it: the loss, the joy, the weird beauty of it all. Plus: DopeyCon 6 is coming October 4th in NYC. If Dopey has meant something to you, we'd love to see you there.Follow the new Instagram @thedopeypodcast, leave a review, tell a friend. And as always—stay strong Dopey Nation, and fucking toodles for Chris.
