We had a great time talking with Lauren about music as the constant in her life, wearing every single hat as a working musician, and females with huge voices who don't hold back (likeLauren!). We also geek out over arts and crafts!    This soulful rocker, originally from Chicago, has had a passion for singing throughout her entirelife. Growing up in a household that was rich in music, her influences were widely varied from artists such as Susan Tedeschi, Bonnie Raitt, The Pointer Sisters, Eva Cassidy, Etta James, Joss Stone, Kelly Clarkson, and many more.   Despite these modern musical influences, Lauren was classically trained throughout most of her early life. She began classical piano lessons at the age of 8, was an active member of several choirs and began taking classical voice lessons when she began high school. She eventually took her love of singing to the Quad Cities and obtained a Bachelor's degree in music with an emphasis on voice at Augustana College. During her college years she spent a summer living inNovafeltria, Italy, learning the language and touring and studying opera. Initially she planned on becoming an opera singer, but quickly realized that rock and soul music were more her style.    Since moving to Nashville, Lauren has continued to tour and release new music. Her album, “Love on the Rocks” that was released in the summer of 2021 debuted at #14 on the BillboardBlues Chart, #4 on Roots Music Report & #21 on the NACC Blues Charts. Anderson has opened for bands such as Beth Hart, Ana Popovic and Mike Zito. Zito was also a featured artist on her sophomore album, on the tune "Back to Chicago". She just released her third full-length album, “Burn it all Down”, which features Albert Castiglia on the track “Zombie Blues” and JohnSalaway on “Hit The Spot.”   Check her out here:  Website: laurenandersonmusic.com  IG: laurenandersonmusic  FB: Lauren Anderson

[3:11] At the ripe old age of eight years old, I got to watch my dad perform for the first time with this guy that we watched on television every Saturday night. [4:03] He called me to perform with him on stage where I did an old buck on the song ‘I've got a tiger by the tail' and I was bit right then and there by the Country Music bug. [4:29] I want to make sure that everybody felt comfortable because the music is one thing, but when you make that connection with people, it doesn't matter what you do. [6:04] Country music can be relevant for all forms of life and if I wrote it from the heart, and it connects with that person, I have fulfilled what I need to be doing. [7:17] Sometimes I'll write a song with a thought or a direction in mind, and someone will come to me with a completely different take on how I wrote it, but it fits their life completely. [10:00] The older I get, the more I realize we're all in this old world together and we are never all going to totally agree, but there's a whole lot more room for agreeing and disagreeing. [10:12] Music can actually act as a bridge between a complete different upbringing or a whole complete difference mindset of people. [10:26] I love the music but I also love my country upbringing. [11:32] I learned to accept life as it comes especially when we had the COVID-19 which restricted our music so much. [12:19] I missed and the camaraderie with people but on the other hand, it gave me an opportunity to really dive in and write some good music. [12:34] A lot of times I realize that you make your life by your own decisions and hopefully you make the right decision. [13:19] I am thankful that I'm fortunate enough to be in a situation where I can do what I want and make a living with what I want. [13:39] Commercial break. [14:03] The love tattoo Foundation was started by me and my wife, and we both have a huge appreciation and admiration for men and women who have served our country. [15:26] I was sent a poem from a gentleman who really liked my music and I was absolutely blown away and we came up with the song from the poem. [15:39] We decided right then and there that if there was a nickel or a million dollars to be made off of this particular song, we're going to give it all to a foundation. [16:46] We found this place in northern Michigan called the whirlwind Lodge which is a place for these folks to get away. [16:54] We want to make all the awareness we can for our guys and girls who serve our country to where there is help. [17:22] Surround yourself with people that believe in you because you can waste an awful lot of time with people that don't necessarily want to see you succeed. [20:12] If you surround yourself with people that believe in you and genuinely want you to have a successful career, it's amazing how fast you'll get there. [20:26] Keep it country. Skylar Rogers was born and raised in some of Chicago's toughest neighborhoods. She learned at an early age that music brought people together and grew up listening to music her mother (a singer herself) was listening or singing to. This upbringing laid the groundwork, giving Skylar the drive and passion to explore a career in music. Skylar's "Soul Rockin' Blues" sound has been influenced by Tina Turner, Etta James, Billy Joel, and Koko Taylor. Throw in a bit of AC/DC and multiple Motown artists and you have the unique, strong, passionate and energetic Skylar Rogers. Music and faith were primary sources of strength and inspiration for Skylar through not only the bad times (abusive relationships, the stillbirth of her child, and a brief period of homelessness following a divorce), but also the best of times (meeting, dating and marrying her second husband, and sharing precious time with her family and friends.) "I have learned that during these times, there was a song for every emotion. Music survives the worst, and celebrates the best."Skylar successfully launched her debut EP, "Insecurities” and began touring nationally in 2019, including performances at St Louis' National Blues Museum and Beale Street in Memphis. She was personally invited by Kevin Burt to perform in the All Star Blues Jam at Las Vegas' Big Blues Bender in 2019. At the same venue, blues artist Erica Brown  (Cast Iron Queens) was floored by Skylar's rendition of Koko Taylor's 'I'm A Woman,' telling her, "You're one of the few people I've heard to do that song justice!" She has also shared a stage with Ms. Zeno "The Mojo Queen," Tab Benoit, Terrie Odabi, and Ben Rice. Quoting Annika Chambers, 2019 Blues Music Award winner, Vizztone recording artist, "Skylar Rogers has a lot of energy and pizzazz, and brings a raw honesty to every performance. The blues world betta look out!"Skylar's first single, “Like Father Like Daughter” was released internationally by Blind Racoon in September 2020, attaining worldwide airplay, charting on the Roots Music Top 50 Contemporary Blues Songs, and continually charting on the Illinois Roots Music Report. Her full length CD, “Firebreather,” released internationally to high acclaim in January, 2021 reaching #2 on the Roots Music Report for Contemporary Blues Album and seeing airplay of all songs throughout the US, Europe and online.

More about Katie Knipp Listen and support Katie and her music. We listened to some of her tracks and she shared a lot of great stories, but there's definitely more to hear from her, so don't forget to check out all the links provided below! Quotes: 13:13 I always, always write the song first, to the point where I can perform it as a solo act. If those things can't happen, the song isn't ready. I'm not just all about the studio stuff. The saxophone and all the great musicians that I add to it are just icing on the cake, but I feel like it's so important to make sure that the song stands on its own. 17:56 I felt very depressed. I was like, pray, and the words just came. He said, in my mind, it just came to me. He said, “Do you see how much you love it now? Do you see that music is love? Just like my love for you is never-ending. You can trust that your music is love and is never-ending and will never leave you or go away.” 36:23 There have always been some stories, I've had some experiences that forced me into, “Why to write a song in the first place?” And I feel blessed by those experiences, even if they were hard at the time. 37:58 I think about that a lot of the time. Because, I'm like, “I don't care what you think. I'm old. I'm here. I'm doing this. If you don't like it, move aside, because these people do. It's totally fine.” 39:03 When you think about a voice, it's like a thumbprint. First of all, it's unique to everybody. If you don't like somebody's voice, that's perfectly fine. To me, it's like wine or food. You have a specific palate for what you like to hear from somebody's mouth. I completely get that I'm not for everybody. So that's a huge thing that transformed my “balls out”, way of going about singing. It's like, “Oh, I don't care anymore.” Timestamps:   00:20     Introducing Katie Knipp 03:12     What was Katie's defining moment when she finally found her voice and style. 05:57     Katie shares what came in first in terms of playing instruments. 08:50     Listen to “Chamomile and Cocaine” by Katie Knipp 12:34     Katie takes us into the studio to the experience of “Chamomile and Cocaine” 15:07     How long has Katie worked with the musicians in her band? 16:56     As a mother of two little ones and with her career choice, how is Katie working things out? 20:55     What are the writing habits and process's of Katie Knipp 23:43     Listen to “The Gospel of Good Intentions” by Katie Knipp 29:28     Is there a certain group of people that “The Gospel of Good Intentions” is intended for? 31:15     Katie takes us to her experience while recording the track “The Gospel of Good Intentions” 34:46     When did Katie come into total honesty with her music? 40:07     Katie shares funny and unusual experiences during a gig. 43:19     What is a chill time like for Katie outside of music? 45:54     How are Katie's boys experiencing music now. 47:32     Get to hear Katie's advice for young and upcoming musicians, artists, singer-songwriters. 49:53     Listen to “Ride On” by James Kevin O'Connor Spotify Playlist:  Check out the Spotify playlist that features the dHarmic Evolution alumni artists. About Things To Come - We all have those crucial crossroad points in our life, a moment in which you have to look at what you've got and realistically decide what's next and what's for the best. "Things To Come" is about the journey that got me there, a rollercoaster ride of drugs and alcohol, a search for the correct answers for myself. Was it that my life was over, or was it that something greater was about to begin. That was my choice to make, and I chose the latter. I walked that path until it almost killed me, and then with the help of the ones I love the most, I made a shift. I quit drinking because it was destroying me, my friendships, and all I had worked to achieve. There were plenty of good times and travels there, but I had more to do, and I was finally ready to face myself and get back on track. This is a song for the future and comes with the knowledge that we are in control of our own lives, and we should look forward to that, no matter how rough it gets. Here's to you, to now, and to all the Things To Come.Born in San Antonio, Texas, Jeremy Parsons grew up soaking in the sounds of Texas music in the dancehalls of the Lone Star State. Jeremy was always a fan of music, but it wasn't until his later high school years that he discovered his knack for it. Driven by his passion, he taught himself to play the guitar and began to write and perform music.Over the past decade, Jeremy has played all over the U.S. and in Europe, including numerous venues in Texas. Pulling from the example of Texas performance artists, Jeremy loves to interact with his audience. He captivates the crowd with his genuine personality, unique humor, and heart-felt love of his occupation.Jeremy draws from his personal experiences to create songs that are keenly perceptive and meaningful. The first single from his latest album, “Things I Need To Say” was the Top 40 Roots Music Report and IndieWorld Report track, "Burn This House Down." The song paints a poignant picture of heartbreak and acceptance that still remains relatable. It will stick with you long after your first listen. That single was followed up by the equally well-received, “Why is the Bluebird Blue,” also s a Top 40 Roots Report americana single. “Bluebird” also reached #2 on the Hits You Love pop charts. The videos for both songs were nominated and selected for numerous Film Festivals, including the Jersey Shore Film Festival, Indie’s Best Films Festival, and the Monkey Bread Tree Film Festival, an IMDB-sanctioned film festival. After living in Nashville for several years, Jeremy has returned home to Texas. His first new single since May 2019, “Tragedy” was released on May 29th, 2020. His new single, “Good Ole Days” is out on July 17th, 2020. The Market for Blues Festival in Omaha and what inspired Hector to create this festival, why being a good father was so important to him, lowering his anxiety, farm life, and why he loves “being bold.” What a sweet and talented guy - we’ll all be hearing more from him moving forward!    Hector Anchondo recently won the International Blues Challenge, in addition to taking home the Memphis Cigar Box Guitar Award for best guitarist. He has 3 LPs, and his latest, Roll The Dice, initially spent 24 weeks on the Roots Music Report. Darryl Purpose on The MindMill Podcast Darryl Purpose is a Charting Folk Singer-Songwriter and Advanced Play Blackjack Player. Today we are with Darryl Purpose, top-charting folk-singer and semi-retired advanced play blackjack master.  Darryl's story is fascinating;  his professions have taken him all over the world, and he has a plethora of anecdotes and tales to go with each adventure.  Despite traveling the globe, Darryl maintains there is no better home for him than Nederland Colorado, where we recorded this episode.  This podcast was recorded live on his property during the Ganja Guru Yoga HERE Retreat.  A huge thanks to close friend and supporter of the show, Adam Brous, for hosting this amazing retreat, and facilitating this fascinating interview.  In this episode, Darryl and I chat on the intricacies of song-writing, the not-so glamorous lifestyle of a professional gambler,  the overlooked amazing benefits of owning a trampoline, and what we love about living in Colorado. Darryl Purpose on The MindMill Podcast Singer songwriter Darryl Purpose biography When Darryl Purpose was 16 years old, his mother put a book called “Beat the Dealer” in his Christmas stocking. He interrupted a guitar major program, went to Las Vegas as a teenager, began a career as professional card player. He was soon known as the world's fastest card counter. Banned from casinos on six continents, he still calls this the “only real job I've ever had.” Years later, he took time off to walk across the country for peace, and fell in with a ‘bad' crowd – musicians & peaceniks – which culminated, improbably sharing the stage with the likes of Santana and Bonnie Raitt in the first stadium rock concert in the former Soviet Union. In 1996, inspired by his work with a traveling band of musical activists and working his way out of a brush with the law (that's another story), Darryl began to tour nationally as a solo singer-songwriter. Eight years, six CDs and a thousand-plus shows later, he was headlining venues like the Freight and Salvage, Club Passim, McCabe's, The Bluebird Cafe, The Kennedy Center, and the Kerrville Folk Festival Main Stage. Darryl Purpose on The MindMill Podcast A break and further projects In 2005, he inexplicably set down his guitar, took a 7-year sabbatical in the Rocky Mountains. He set out to “get healthy in multiple ways”. During this time, he shepherded the release of “Singer-Songwriter Heaven: the songs of Kevin Faherty”. He co-captained the “Second Strings Project” delivering over twenty thousand sets of guitar strings to those who need them all around the world. He studied with Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh; and in 2009, was inducted into the Blackjack Hall of Fame. One of 17 members was Ed Thorp, the man who wrote that book that his mother put into his Christmas stocking at 16. The music called him back in 2012 and saw Darryl record his first CD of original material in 10 years – “Next Time Around,” produced by Billy Crockett for the Blue Rock Artists label. With no formal radio promotion, the CD spent five weeks at #1 on the Roots Music Report folk chart for national radio airplay in 2013. His critically-acclaimed latest release – “Still The Birds” (co-written with Paul Zollo, also produced by Billy Crockett) twists and turns songs as unique and diverse as the stories from Darryl's kaleidoscopic life. “Still the Birds” also rose to #1 on the Roots Music Report folk chart. Darryl likes to say that luck is a residue of design — and he has been crafting his own luck for some time now. Current interests include Camp Ned, (an intimate songwriter retreat in the rocky mountains); traveling, including the occasional gig; and, inspired by the mountains, a deep dive into mindful practices and a super-healthy lifestyle. https://youtu.be/5RxGdRkMBkk SHOWNOTES Connect with Darryl Purpose Darryl's WebsiteInstagramFacebookListen to Darryl Purpose on Spotify
