After three years, we finally made it to Chiang Mai, the hot destination for digital nomads and freelance barbers, apparently. But that’s not why we visited. We here to walk with Elephants on the Twilight Tour from the Elephant Nature Park. We spend the last part of the day with a small herd elephants --  three adults and a couple of juveniles. Rambunctious ones, at that! This was a no-hook, no-ride experience, which was all about our small group feeding, tossing water on, walking with, getting ran over by (true story), and then feeding again these elephants. Very, very cool. Thanks to Bret Love from Green Global Travel for making the recommendation of a great way to spend the day with elephants in Thailand that won’t crush your soul. Where Else to Go

Rwanda is a small landlocked country just south of the equator in central and east Africa. The country is mountains in the west and savannah in the east, and although primarily an agricultural economy, tourism is becoming an important part of the economy. While many people only know about Rwanda for its horrible history of genocide, travel blogger Bret Love fell in love with it. He says: Rwanda. It's relatively off the beaten path for most American travelers, and there's a lot of amazing ecotourism attractions beyond following Dian Fossey's footsteps and trekking with gorillas in Volcanos National Park. A lot of people associate the country with the Civil War and genocide that ended in 1994. But President Paul Kagame has completely transformed the country over the past 22 years, with an impressive infrastructure, impeccably managed tourism industry, and some of the most beautiful landscapes we've ever seen. Bret Love is a journalist with 23 years of experience, whose freelance clients have ranged from the Atlanta Journal Constitution and Rolling Stone to National Geographic and Yahoo Travel. Along with his wife Mary Gabbett, he is the co-founder of Green Global Travel, an award-winning blog focused on ecotourism, nature/wildlife conservation & cultural preservation that hopes to inspire and inform people on ways to live and travel more sustainably. Bret and Mary also co-founded Green Travel Media, a content marketing agency, as well as a new Fair Trade e-commerce store that's opening on Earth Day 2016. You can follow all of Bret and Mary’s travels on Green Global Travel, where they’ve recently opened a shop focusing on items from their travels. I purchased a pillow cover from the shop and was very pleased with both the customer service and quality. Find them on social media at Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, and Instagram. Full Show Script [Less of Me] EVO: If Phuket has a ubiquitous tourist attraction, it's elephant trekking. Billboards, in-hotel pamphlets, official-looking street signs... the message is clear. No trip to Phuket is complete without an elephant encounter. SHE: Rides on the backs of these majestic giants are offered by tour operators large and small, typically with elephants on display right next to the road. And typically with several tour vans offloading eager participants, ready for a slow, plodding journey up the side of hill under elephant-power. EVO: That's exactly what we found as we were scootering our way up to The Big Buddha statue (and yes, it's exactly what it sounds like). We  video with the elephants (http://youtu.be/1hBKltYDqj8)  ... and then felt kinda bad about it. We, unlike most people, are aware of the controversy surrounding elephant tourism. SHE: But LIKE most people, we didn't know all that much about the problem. However, this was an opportunity for us to dig a little by asking questions. It seems the responsible thing to do, right? [Sheila has questions] SHE: ... And then she walked off to get yet another person. But I get it. I don't speak any Thai beyond "hello" and "thank you", so I was happy to wait patiently. [Sheila has more questions.] SHE: So... that wasn't a very big area. But it's on the side of the big hill, so maybe it was bigger than it looked. No one was offering me a chance to examine the enclosure (and seriously, I don't know what I should be looking for), so I decided to change questions. [Working hours] SHE: Wow. Eight hours? That seems like a lot. At another elephant trekking place down the road (like we said, there are lots of them in Phuket), I got some clarification on that: [Hours and treks] EVO: Let me do the math on that for you. Each trek up and down the hillside takes about an hour, including prep and slow transit time. That's 3-4 hours -- up to 10 hours -- the elephant is working. That doesn't sound too bad... except for two things. First, when the heavy humans in the uncomfortable chair are removed from the elephant's back, the animal is immediately chained to a tree, with less than a meter of space to roam. Second, elephants don't eat three meals a day, like those bipeds sitting in the heavy chairs. Elephants need to eat all the time, and they aren't allowed to stop and munch along the trek. SHE: A full grown elephant needs to eat a more than 200 kilograms (almost 450 pounds) of food every day. That's more than 10 times what a cow eats. And when's the last time you saw a cow NOT eating? EVO: It's not just a lack of food, long working hours, and tiny living conditions. Every single part of elephant trekking is abhorrent. So I'll make this plain and simple: there is no such thing as ethical elephant trekking. None. [Bret disagrees] EVO: That's Bret Love, co-founder of Green Travel Media. Bret's a much respected and often sought-out expert in responsible tourism practices. [Bret brings the painful reality home] EVO: Let that sink in for a moment. Anything where elephants "perform for" humans, wherever your find it (I'm looking at you circuses and fairs) is to be avoided. SHE: But we're not leaving you on that downer of a note, because not all elephant experiences for travelers are bad. Here's Bret again: [Bret suggests Elephant Nature Park] EVO: Some elephant sanctuaries are working on the sticky problem of the estimated 3,000 "working" elephants currently in Thailand. Theses organization (like the Surin Project) teach mahouts -- owners of the elephants -- how to offer tourists new and valuable experiences to meet changing consumer behavior without causing additional and ongoing harm to their animals. SHE: And seriously, wouldn't you rather help bathe an elephant in a rice paddy than watch one sadly splash around in a tiny plastic tub? Take elephant riding off of your bucket list.

Full Show Script [Die in the desert] EVO: The Mediterranean sea is pretty salty, about 15% higher in salinity than the Atlantic. That's mostly due to evaporation -- the Mediterranean is very shallow and is connected to the Atlantic by only a tiny, 13 km wide channel between Spain and Africa. SHE: On the Spanish coast midway between Barcelona and Valencia, the Ebro river has been depositing silt and sand for countless years, creating a huge delta jutting out into the Mediterranean. Not unlike the Mississippi delta in Louisiana. 3 EVO: This area is called Terres de l'Ebre, literally the land created by the Rio Ebro. On the coast, it's mostly a collection of farms all dedicated to rice production, consisting of 35 square kilometers of perfectly flat -- and kinda boring -- rice patties. But centuries before, the big cash crop was salt. SHE: Tucked between rice fields with little in the way of signage is the old Tancada saltworks. An interpretive center was built to preserve and educate visitors about the history of the site. Here's our guide explaining what we're seeing and how these salt pans were used in the middle ages: [Salt pans] EVO: But the coolest part of the story isn't about historic salt cultivation. It's about historic salt protection. [Pirates] EVO: Did you hear that? Pirates! But not just any pirates. Salt stealing pirates! Salt stealing pirates from Africa! Oh, I'm totally binge-watching that series as soon as the first season drops on Netflix. SHE: Just a few kilometers upstream, the rice fields give way to rows and rows of olive trees, an icon of Mediterranean commerce and culture. In Arión, one particular stand of trees -- called a finca -- has been tended to for a very long time. EVO: This particular finca is setup as a sort of natural museum and also isn't terribly easy to find. Our Spanish-speaking guide -- he was a huge fan of my Forbidden Planet t-shirt -- walked us through the Millennial olive grove. Or was that millennium?  [Millennial millennium] EVO: You say tomato, I say tomato. SHE: The male voice you heard translating was David from the  Terres de l'Ebre tourism board (http://www.terresdelebre.travel/) . He had the un-enviable job of wrangling a dozen info-hungry travel bloggers, but he did an admirable job. EVO: Let's not bury the lede here. Millennial, or millennium, whichever... It means a thousand. As in, years. In this next clip,  Bret Love from Green Global Travel (http://greenglobaltravel.com/)  expressed the shock of realization I'm sure most of us felt. [How old is old?] EVO: Since you probably don't carry a three point five meter tape in your backpack, you can perform this simple test. Stand up and try to wrap your arms around an olive tree. If you can't, and need at least two other average sized friends to complete the chain AND all of your chests touching the trunk, you're probably holding hands around a Millennial olive tree. Or a Millennium olive tree. Whatever. It's still a living thing over one thousand years old. Wow. SHE: It's important to know the age of the tree for reasons other than wining a trivia competition in a bar. The older the tree, the more valuable its oil. Our guide explains the challenges of identifying and certifying this fact, with travel writer Gabi Logan jumping in to translate:  [Self certified] EVO: Yeah, because that's not the fox guarding the hen house. 15 SHE: Now hold on a minute, Mr. Cynic. There are plenty of organizations that self-regulate themselves that you get behind. The Cicerone program for beer experts? Podcasting? 6 EVO: Alright, alright... Sheesh. Trying to bring a little levity to this serious show. Get my head bit off. 17 SHE: Whatever. EVO: Déu y hasa luego from Terres de l'Ebre! SHE: We travel the world as The Opportunistic Travelers largely because of our generous listeners. EVO: People all over the world pledge as little as five...

Tourism branding and social media In episode #19 of Tourism Tweetup the Podcast we chat to Bret Love from Green Global Travel and Green Travel Media about tourism branding and social media. We also discuss what is branding and if branding is still important and relevant in the age of social media. Highlights, Notes & Links We Mention in this Episode Bret Love saying branding gives you more control over your brand and with all the forms of social media that is around, developing a sound branding strategy through content and reinforced messaging through social media gives that control. Branding is a means of communicating what you or your organisation stands for. Defining that unique identity that separates this entity from everything else. Branding is a long term investment in your business. Every decision you make for your company (or blog or whatever) is like a deposit or a withdrawal in this investment you have with your customers. Implementing a long term branding strategy over short term gains is what is recommended. Every single touch point and everything you do is an opportunity to reinforce your message and to share with people what your brand stands for.  (Worth listening in at the 5 minute mark for more details). Asking these questions can help outline your brand: Who are you? What drives you? Who are your target audience and why should they care about you? What are the defining values that set you apart? What do you stand for? If you don't define yourself others will define you for you. From the 11 minute mark Bret talks about the work he did with Costa Rica Tourism #ecocostarica and the second branding campaign who is with International Expeditions. Both involve storytelling as key elements and working with bloggers to tell those stories - and stories that will connect with the target audience. [Tweet ""Storytelling is at the core of how you reach people who are trying to make consumer decisions" "] At around the 18 minute mark I ask Bret about what types of content are working. He gives a great answer that basically says there is not a one size fits all. Worth listening to this discussion. "...it's bringing a magazine approach, mixing things up, balancing things out, so you have a little bit of this and a little of that. It is bringing that to the content your produce for business and marketing purposes." "People are afraid to take chances because they don't know yet what will work. And you've got to get past that, of being afraid of failure and be willing to try the things that will make your brand stand out from others." At the 22 minute mark I ask Bret if he has a favourite social media channel - listen in for the response! Finally I ask Bret about what he is excited about for 2015. There is loads going on with Bret and Green Travel Media but his key upcoming project with Travelers Building Change is the most important and special.
