The Untold Story of Amboog-a-Lard and the Making of “A New Hope” with Chad Steinhart, Dan Fontana, & John Somerlade //////// One of our most anticipated episodes is finally here! For the first time, three-quarters of the “A New Hope” Amboog-a-Lard lineup, Chad Steinhart (keyboards), Dan Fontana (guitar/vocals), and John Somerlade (drums), join the podcast to share the full story of the band. From their late 1980s roots in Coral Springs, FL, and influences like KISS, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Anthrax, to rehearsal spaces and local venues including Club Soda (Coral Springs), The Treehouse and The Button South (Hallandale), Reunion Room and The Edge (Ft. Lauderdale), and Washington Square and the Cameo Theater (Miami Beach), as well as guidance from TCA Management (John Tovar and Frank Callari), this episode covers it all. The band talks about the origins of their name, lineup changes, album artwork, the making of their 1993 album “A New Hope” (recorded at Studio 13 in Deerfield with Jeremy Staska, mastered at Criteria Studios in Miami, and recently remastered at TyFy Studios in Orlando by Dan Fontana), several close calls being signed by major labels like Atlantic, Capitol, and Island Records, and stories from opening for Overkill, Exodus, Anthrax, Corrosion of Conformity, and punk legends The Ramones, as well as sharing the stage with countless local bands of the era including Malevolent Creation, Raped Ape, Cynic, Saigon Kick, Marilyn Manson, and The Itch, and their relationship with Glenn Richards, South Florida radio DJ on 103.5 WSHE.The band also shares stories about Jeordie White, the band's bassist who later joined Marilyn Manson (though he does not appear in this episode), along with untold anecdotes from their early days. For anyone who experienced the South Florida metal and alternative scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s, this episode is pure nostalgia. For those discovering it now, it is packed with rich history and behind-the-scenes stories never shared before.

In this episode of The Strong Stoic, I'm joined by classicist and author Inger Kuin to dive deep into the wild, hilarious, and surprisingly practical life of Diogenes—the original Cynic and, in many ways, the “stress test” for Stoic ideas. We explore:Who Diogenes was and why his life still mattersWhy he chose to live in a jar, throw away his cup, and embrace radical simplicityHow his ideas flowed through Crates to Zeno, making him Stoicism's “intellectual grandfather”The difference between training your body vs punishing itHow temporary discomfort (no-spend months, cabin weekends, etc.) can build real resilienceCultural norms, door-holding in Canada, and why Diogenes cared more about justice than etiquetteCosmopolitanism and being a “citizen of the cosmos” instead of a slave to one culture's expectationsWhether Diogenes was “crazy” or just radically consistent with his philosophyThe tension between independence and human connection: why Diogenes avoided close attachments—and why Inger (and I) think that might throw the baby out with the bathwaterHow to examine your own motives honestly: are you saying “yes” for good, joy, or just money and status? We close with practical advice on bringing a bit of Diogenes into modern life without selling your house and moving into a barrel—by questioning your motives, experimenting with less comfort, and rethinking the weight you give to externals.Guest & BookInger's new book, Diogenes: The Rebellious Life and Revolutionary Philosophy of the Original Cynic, is out November 11, 2025 and available wherever you buy books (hardcover, e-book, and audiobook).

Buy The BookIn his own day, the ancient philosopher Diogenes the Cynic had a reputation for eccentricity, heckling his fellow philosophers in the marketplace, living in a clay pot, and relieving himself in public. Since his death in 323 BCE, devoted followers made him and his ideas famous the world over. But what we think we know about Diogenes remains distorted and sanitized. In Diogenes, classicist Inger N.I. Kuin scours all existing evidence of Diogenes and his followers to offer an in-depth account of Diogenes' life and thought, revealing a man whose innovative ideas about power, death, nature, and the body have much to teach the contemporary world. He pioneered a vision of simplicity and autonomy in his day-to-day life, stressing the importance of living in the here and now, and of always thinking for oneself. Diogenes stands apart as history's first recorded critic of slavery and a proud exile from polite society whose challenging thought proved foundational for the Stoics and their successors.Diogenes rehabilitates Diogenes as a compelling thinker for the twenty-first century, one who demands that we look at our society with fresh eyes and be unafraid of change—starting with ourselves.

In this sensory-driven episode, Janina is joined by Sietze Wijma, founder of The Art of Tasting, to explore how flavour molecules shape our experience of wine. From chemistry to culture, Sietze shares how our environment, memories, and even our saliva can change what we taste in the glass. Together, they unpack the science behind wine aromas, tasting faults, and why perception is as much about learning as it is about the senses.   Shownotes [00:26] Janina introduces her guest, Sietze Wijma, recognised at the 67 Pall Mall Global Communicator Awards for his work blending sensory science and wine education. [01:49] Quick wine fact — how saliva enzymes alter sweetness and release fruity aromas in Sauvignon Blanc. Based on info from The Cynic's Guide to Wine by Sunny Hodge (Guest on Ep 232) [03:41] Sietze explains The Art of Tasting and how adding isolated flavour compounds helps students identify key aromas. [04:31] How flavour molecules like those in green bell peppers naturally occur in wine. [05:28] Using “spiked” neutral wines as a training tool before tasting commercial wines. [06:19] Butter, vanilla, and yogurt notes — breaking down malolactic fermentation, oak ageing, and lees stirring. [08:00] How culture shapes perception: diacetyl (buttery aroma) described as baklava in Turkey or dahi in India. [09:36] Sietze's journey from studying flavour chemistry in beer to founding his own wine-focused aroma lab in the UK. [11:03] The “bird-watching” analogy — tasting is about recognition, not sensitivity; anyone can train their palate. [12:57] Identifying key wine aroma families — pyrazines, TDN, and rotundone — and how they appear in specific grape varieties. [13:55] Pyrazines and their link to green bell pepper notes in Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, and Carménère. [15:10] TDN and the petrol character in Riesling — how sunlight and bottle age intensify the aroma. [17:04] Rotundone and the black-pepper signature of cool-climate Syrah and white-pepper notes of Grüner Veltliner. [20:04] How different cultures interpret the same aroma — ginseng and pyrazines in Chinese Cabernet Sauvignon. [21:27] The “ladybug taint” — an uncommon wine fault caused by crushed beetles releasing pyrazine compounds. [23:32] Common wine faults explained: cork taint (TCA), reduction, light strike, oxidation, and brettanomyces. [28:09] Story time — Sietze recalls mistaking oxidation for an open-too-long bottle in Austria. [30:14] Brettanomyces and the fine line between savoury complexity and spoilage. [32:31] The Château de Beaucastel example — when Brett becomes part of terroir and debate. [33:13] Tasting myths: why aromas like “green bell pepper” don't mean actual allergens in wine. [34:37] How to improve blind tasting skills at home using aroma kits and DIY spiked wines. [36:28] Why tasting side-by-side is key to better identification and learning. [37:55] The “mouseiness” fault — why some aromas appear only after tasting due to pH and acidity. [42:46] Helen Keller's quote on scent and memory — a poetic close to a science-rich episode.

Expect myth-busting, geeky insights, and plenty of food for thought on how wine is grown, made, and enjoyed. In this episode I talk with Dr. Mark Nanos about his recent contribution on Philippians to the book Judeophobia and the New Testament, out now on Eerdmans. Dr. Nanos is the leading proponent of the ‘Paul Within Judaism' school which reads Paul as a Jew who continues to understand his mission as an apostle within the framework of Judaism. He argues that the Christian interpretive tradition has marginalized and disparaged Judaism in unhelpful and unhistorical ways, and that Philippians 3 has often been used in anti-Jewish polemic. He situates Philippians 3 within its historical and rhetorical context, explaining how references to ‘dogs' and ‘stomachs' make more sense within the framework of Cynic philosophy and should best be understood as an attack against pagan culture instead of Judaism. We talk about Paul's Jewish identity and his belief that gentiles were incorporated into Israel through faith, as well as why modern Christians need to seriously reconsider Paul and his Jewish identity if we want to faithfully interpret the New Testament.  Media Referenced:Judeophobia and the New Testament: https://a.co/d/3pX4d1yMark Nanos Website: https://marknanos.com/ The Protestant Libertarian Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute and a part of the Christians For Liberty Network. How much of what we “taste” in wine is influenced by its appearance and our expectations? Why can't we smell sweetness in wine? Could sniffing slower change which aromas you detect in a wine? Why are humans more sensitive to bitter tastes versus sweet? How does adding ice to whiskey open up its aromas?   Key Takeaways The little CO₂ bubbles in sparkling wine dissolve in your saliva and form a physical barrier between certain molecules hitting your tongue and your ability to taste certain things. Sweetness, is the first thing that'll get blocked out. So, if you have a sparkling wine that has some sweetness, as your saliva builds up with bubbles, you won't perceive it. We in wine extrapolate a little bit and think, “It's a white wine,” so I may psychosomatically associate it with white peppery things, rather than a red wine, which might be black pepper. It's actually the same sesquiterpene, called rotundone. We just trick ourselves into perceiving it one way rather than the other. This happens a lot in wine. Copper is naturally antimicrobial and antifungal, which is why we use it in plumbing, hospitals, and as touchpads on doors. Fungal pests like downy and powdery mildew, which affect vines. We spray vines with copper base concoctions to prevent that fungus building up, which will destroy our harvests. But it's not just the heavy metal, but it when it rains, it'll hit your soils and affect earthworms and all of the things that we know to be really good for the soils, naturally. We stop our soil's ability to just look after itself. We haven't found a unified way to overcome downy and powdery mildew without the use of copper.   About Sunny Hodge Sunny Hodge is the sole founder of Diogenes the Dog and aspen & meursault; two multi award-winning wine bars associated with challenging the status quo of wine. Can you really taste “minerality” in wine? What gives Champagne and traditional method wines their signature bready flavor and creamy texture? How has natural wine sparked deeper conversations about how we farm and produce food and drink? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Sunny Hodge You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Two of you are going to win a copy of Sunny Hodge's terrific new book, The Cynic's Guide to Wine. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck!   Highlights What is the deeper meaning behind the name of Sunny's London wine bar, aspen & meursault? How did Sunny's early love of rollerskating shape his experiences growing up? What lessons did Sunny's mother impart that still impact his worldview today? How did Sunny's engineering background influence his approach to learning about wine? Can we really smell metals and minerals? Why was Sunny skeptical about the influence of soil on wine? What surprised Sunny about our technical insights into wine? How did Sunny find the balance between sharing the complex science behind wine and making it interesting to the average wine lover? Why does Sunny believe we should be applying cynicism to the world of wine? How do natural wines cause us to challenge the food and drink we bring to the table? What does "funky" mean in the context of natural wines? How does Sunny source unusual wines for his wine bars? What is humus, and how does it influence wine character? How do plants absorb nutrients from soil?   Key Takeaways We can smell some geological materials like salt and some minerals, but most minerals and metals we're unable to smell and taste. And those metals that we feel that we can smell and taste, that's actually a tertiary influence of our oils reacting with those metals.Technically, metal and most other minerals except for salt, don't have smell or taste. Yeast autolysis is the process that gives champagnes and traditional method wines their bready, yeasty, autolytic flavor. Autolysis is when a yeast thinks it's gonna die and it's pretty stressed. So as alcohol levels pick up, and your yeast knows it's going to pass away soon, its enzymes will switch on to a different mode, and this is autolysis mode. They'll start eating away at the cell membrane of the yeast, and eventually they'll make little puncture holes, and all of the insides of the yeast will end up in the liquid. So that self-detonation of yeast in stressful environments is what gives the physical texture to your wine. That's why autolytic wines have that texture and it gives you those yeasty, bready flavors. Natural wine makes us question how we farm and how we produce all food and drink, not just wine. Wine is one that we can talk about and have a real discourse without it getting too boring. And with natural wine, those bigger topics are, how do we farm? What are the pros and cons of how we farm now, and how are we making our food and drink?   About Sunny Hodge Sunny Hodge is the sole founder of Diogenes the Dog and aspen & meursault; two multi award-winning wine bars associated with challenging the status quo of wine. Chat GPT-5 is here – what does it mean? What does it do? They claim it's the best yet at creative writing and coding, and apparently just feels more human-like in its responses. It will also make information up 25% less than GPT-4. Importantly, they've trained the model to fail gracefully when posed with tasks that it cannot solve, which is better than it taking shortcuts or lying about finishing it. It is much better with health related questions too, according to its benchmarks. Users can pick from four preset personalities—Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd. Something you'll notice if you've never paid for ChatGPT, or used another provider, is a new thing called "reasoning". This is effectively where the AI talks to itself a little, and spends time "thinking" through the question before answering. ChatGPT is huge They say they now have 700 million weekly active users of ChatGPT, 5 million paying business users, and 4 million developers utilizing the API. The company is not yet profitable. It plans to raise $40 billion this year and is on a pace to pull in revenue of $20 billion by year's end. If you've got an Emirates flight later this year, there's a new rule about power banks Emirates will ban the use of power banks aboard its flights and only allow passengers to bring one such device onto the plane. The airline says the "significant growth" in customers using power banks has led to a rising number of lithium battery-related incidents during flight across the industry. The airline also wants the power banks stored somewhere they can be quickly removed in case they set fire. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Born in 103, he was a philosopher from the Samaritan town of Shechem in Palestine, who had devoted his life to the search for truth, trying many philosophical schools and sources of human wisdom: the Stoics, the Peripatetics, the Pythagoreans and finally the Platonists. One day an old man (whose name and origin are unknown) appeared to him and spoke to him of the Prophets and Apostles who had learned of God not by their own wisdom, but by revelation of God Himself. He read the scriptures and was convinced of the truth of the Faith, but he would not be baptised or call himself a Christian until he had tested all the pagans' arguments against Christianity. To this end he traveled to Rome, where he engaged in debate at philosophical gatherings, impressing all with his wisdom. In Rome he also witnessed the martyrdom of Sts Ptolemy and Lucian; this moved him to write an Apologia for the Christian faith and the Christian people, which he gave to the Emperor Antoninus and the Senate. They were so moved by this document that the Emperor ordered that persecution of Christians should cease.   For the remainder of his life, Justin devoted all his skills to the proclamation of the Gospel and the defense of Christians. To the end of his life, wherever he preached Christ, he always wore his philosopher's garb. In addition to his Apologia, he wrote a number of other learned defenses of the faith.   Eventually he was imprisoned following the false accusations of Crescens, a jealous Cynic philosopher. He died (one source says by beheading, another by poison) in Rome in 167 under the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, successor to Antoninus.
